Live Updates: Queen Elizabeth II Under Medical Supervision (The New York Times)

The queen, who is 96, remains at Balmoral Castle, her estate in the Scottish Highlands, Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and his wife, Camilla, traveled to be with the queen at Balmoral Castle, his office said. His eldest son, Prince William, who is second in line to the throne, was also on his way to Scotland, as were the queen’s other sons, Andrew and Edward. Both meetings had been moved from Buckingham Palace to Balmoral to spare the queen a flight to London. As the news about the queen began to circulate, a crowd quickly formed outside Buckingham Palace. During the Platinum Jubilee in June, marking her 70 years on the throne, a smiling monarch appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch a parade and a Royal Air Force flyover in her honor. Alexander Caplan, a technology entrepreneur, came to Buckingham Palace immediately after hearing the news of the queen’s health. For the queen, it was the second meeting with a prime minister that morning. The Palace said that the monarch had accepted doctors’ advice to rest. During the depths of the pandemic, she addressed a socially isolated nation, assuring Britons, in the words of Vera Lynn’s beloved World War II-era song, that “we’ll meet again.” In April 2021, the queen lost her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, who died a few weeks before his 100th birthday. The queen, who is 96, remains at Balmoral Castle, her estate in the Scottish Highlands, Buckingham Palace said in a statement. But on Wednesday evening, she abruptly canceled a virtual meeting with members of her Privy Council after her doctors advised her to rest.

As she rode to Trooping the Colour, the annual ceremonial review of troops, in June 1981, a youth fired six blanks her way. For the queen, that would have been a breach of protocol and tradition — the palace flagpole was there to fly the royal standard only when the monarch was in residence. For Christmas and the New Year, she reigned over her family at Sandringham, her estate in East Anglia. She and Philip had anticipated a long reign for George VI and the chance for a fairly normal life as a navy family, but in the winter of 1952, the king died of cancer at 56. Amid public recriminations and revelations of infidelity, the Prince and Princess of Wales formally split in 1992 and, at the queen’s insistence, divorced in 1996. In the early 1970s, Edward Heath “treated her as a piece of necessary business,” wrote an Elizabeth biographer, Ben Pimlott. She flew home as the 25-year-old queen, to be greeted at the airport by a somber phalanx of leaders, including Churchill. By then, she had found her life’s companion, Prince Philip, also a great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria and the son of an exiled Greek prince. She was tutored in British history, and the lives of the monarchs and their fraught relationships with Parliament became less an academic lesson than a map for navigating public life. Dressed in black and with her face veiled by a mask, she seemed alone if not isolated in the oaken pews of St. Her public life was defined by these duties, some seemingly trivial, such as handing out symbolic alms, others mantled with pomp and pageantry — the opening of Parliament or the hosting of a state dinner. In a monarchy dating back to at least the 10th century with King Athelstan, Elizabeth’s reign was the longest.

A quarter-century after assuming the throne, Queen Elizabeth II summarized her role and her relationship with her subjects: "When I was 21, I pledged my life to the service of our people," she said. Bradford believes history will rank her among the nation's great sovereigns, alongside Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. The attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humored resolve and of fellow feeling still characterize this country." "I think she'll be seen as dutiful, good at her job and self-sacrificing in many ways." As head of state and national matriarch, she reassured the British people and emphasized the country's traditional values. Many Britons were furious and saw the queen as out of touch and uncaring. "The image that Diana passed onto the world about the Prince of Wales is not a very attractive image. "I think the queen really felt deeply wounded by the lack of success of her family," says Sarah Bradford, the author of several biographies of Elizabeth. And those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any. Her death is a major milestone for the country, triggering an outpouring of national affection and grief. I find that's one of the sad things, that people don't take on jobs for life, they try different things all the time." "I remember lines of unknown people, linking arms and walking down Whitehall, all of us just swept along on a tide of happiness and relief," she recalled.

This was evident in 2005 when, to public approval, she assented to the previously unthinkable marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. They subsequently set up home with son Archie in California and, in a March 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, accused "the firm" of leaving Meghan unprotected against racist abuse and unfair media coverage, as well as having neglected her mental health concerns. On Tuesday, she met with outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his successor, Liz Truss, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, rather than traveling to Buckingham Palace to do so. She also attended the wedding of Harry to She even continued with light duties after testing positive for Covid-19 in February 2022. This year was not one "on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure," the Queen said in a speech later. The gestures struck a chord with the public and criticism ebbed away. After her coronation in 1953, she embarked on numerous official trips, oversaw state openings of parliament, welcomed visiting leaders such as Dwight Eisenhower, Charles de Gaulle and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev, and toured a coal mine. At 16, she was made an honorary colonel of the Grenadier Guards, a British army infantry regiment. Prince Charles was embarking on a military career, Princess Anne, an acclaimed horsewoman, was married -- drawing huge crowds of well-wishers. There was, however, barely any let-up in her busy schedule.

Queen Elizabeth II is dead at 96. Her remarkable reign, explained. (Vox)

The longest-reigning monarch in British history maintained a “blank slate” onto which her subjects, fellow politicians, and the world could project.

She represents victory in the Cold War and she represents the values of a good relationship.” Her epic stoicism has come to signify the endurance of the nation.” With all signs of extraneous personality ruthlessly eradicated, the queen was free to serve as a symbol — of whatever her onlookers pleased, certainly, but also and most potently, of stability. But she was head of the nation because her peculiar political skills, her deliberate blankness and steadfast devotion to duty, and her longevity, made her so well-suited for the task. “In an age when everyone has opinions, she has maintained the discipline of never revealing hers. Because of that aura of sovereignty, the queen was able to serve as a major political asset precisely as her actual powers diminished. Antony Jay, author of Elizabeth R, a 1992 biography that would be enormously influential within the walls of Buckingham Palace, thought of the queen as having two roles, unique to her and her reign. No more.” Brown describes the queen as “a master throughout her reign at the art of gracious retreats while somehow preserving the aura of sovereignty.” But by the time Elizabeth took the throne, the idea of a British empress was out of the question: the British Empire was no more. That stern focus on the wider context, that insistence that her work is interesting because it is necessary, is part of a sense of discipline the queen brought to the royal family. “It has been her duty to cede power and transfer sovereignty with a smile and a friendly handshake,” Hardman writes. She was “schooled,” Brown writes, “to erect inflexible, lifelong barriers around her private thoughts and feelings.” Those barriers would serve her well over her decades of work.

Hugo Vickers said the queen “bestowed an atmosphere of calm over a very fast-changing world” and was an “extraordinary conciliator.” He recalled the moment when, in 2012, she shook hands with Martin McGuinness, a former IRA commander who had become deputy first minister of Northern Ireland. It will lie on a raised box known as a catafalque, and members of the public, as well as VIPs, will be allowed to visit and pay their respects, ahead of a state funeral Sept. And for the first time since 1952, the national anthem will be played with the words “God Save the King.” Hopefully, the people will like him. At the queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, marking 25 years on the throne, she reaffirmed that pledge. Brush them as in a pair of shoes, or touch them lightly?”) The Queen, having not been reared to put herself forward, was well adapted to putting her country first. For her own self-preservation, and for the preservation of the institution that she embodied and led, it was often wise to withdraw behind a gilded curtain. In her first Christmas broadcast to the nation, in December, 1952, she spoke of dedicating herself to the service of her subjects, whom she asked to pray that God grant her wisdom and strength, so “that I may faithfully serve Him, and you, all the days of my life.” As Ben Pimlott, one of the Queen’s more subtle biographers, has written, “the impact of such clichéd phrases came from the disturbing sense that she meant them.” After her father’s coronation, the eleven-year-old Elizabeth wrote a six-page account of the day’s events, neatly completed in pencil and dedicated “To Mummy and Papa In Memory of Their Coronation From Lilibet by Herself.” In it, she recounted her excitement at being woken at 5 a.m. “The arches and beams at the top were covered with a sort of haze of wonder as Papa was crowned, at least I thought so.” by a band of the Royal Marines playing outside her window at Buckingham Palace, and she commented on how beautiful her parents looked in their ceremonial robes. The sight of the youthful sovereign soberly entering what was to be seven decades of service helped inspire what became a mostly enduring personal respect and affection for her among the populace she nominally headed. By instinct, constitution, and training, the Queen knew that what was demanded of her was an almost superhuman splitting of self. Characteristically conservative, she was initially opposed to the televising of her coronation, a position that Downing Street supported, noting in a memo that, were a live broadcast to take place, “any mistakes, unintentional incidents or undignified behaviour by spectators would be seen by millions of people.” Just as the breath of kingship passed invisibly into her with her father’s passing, the perquisites and responsibilities of majesty were bestowed on her in that secret ceremony beneath the cloth of gold. But off limits to viewers was the arcane ritual of the anointing of the monarch—when the Queen, seated beneath a canopy of golden cloth held aloft by four enrobed Knights of the Garter, was daubed on her hands, forehead, and chest with holy oil borne in a twelfth-century gold-and-silver spoon.

The Queen Met 13 Sitting U.S. Presidents, Who Basked in Her ... (The New York Times)

Queen Elizabeth II was a gracious host and guest over the last seven decades, even when faced with protocol mistakes and awkward missteps.

The first time Elizabeth shared a room with a president, she was not yet queen and the American in question was not yet president. At a dinner at the British Embassy the next night, she said, “I wondered whether I should start this toast by saying, ‘When I was here in 1776.’” The younger Bush then met the queen again when he became president. When she took the podium, no one had taken account of her short stature, so her face was hidden from television cameras by the microphone and all anyone could see was the bright purple hat she was wearing. The queen “reminded me of my own mother in her appearance, politeness and reserve,” Hillary Clinton observed in one of her memoirs. The elder Bush in 1991 hosted one of the more memorable state visits for the queen. She became queen in 1952, near the end of Truman’s term. But he reportedly left sour feelings by greeting the queen mother with a kiss instead of a bow. For each president, meeting the queen was typically a high point of their tenure, in some ways a validation of their stature on the world stage. “You have really made it when she comes to visit you and talks to the American people about the bonds between the two countries. While Americans cast off the rule of the monarchy, many still revered it, and there was always something grand when a president met the queen. Queen Elizabeth II met 13 sitting presidents of the United States during her long life, which has to be some kind of record, not to mention a test of diplomatic fortitude.

As Brown (who recounts his own in-person meeting with the queen) described the monarch: “It was her duty and destiny to be dull, to be as useful and undemonstrative as a postage stamp, her life dedicated to the near-impossible task of saying nothing of interest.” — Joumana Khatib He photographed the queen during some of the most significant moments in her private and public life: in a military uniform as war broke out in England; shortly after the birth of her first child, Charles, and at her coronation in 1953. The book, which contains text by Susanna Brown, a photography curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, is as much a celebration of Beaton’s talents as of his subject, Elizabeth. The result has the exhilaration of real-life gossip, while offering a moving depiction of a family, and a nation, at a moment of monumental change. The biting of footmen! And that’s probably how she’d want it; she was known for the exacting attention she paid to every comma and fully aware of the implications of even the most oblique reference. In this 2018 biography, Hardman, a journalist known for his reporting on the royal family, explores the queen’s global standing, her role as the head of the British Commonwealth and her extensive international travels. Seward, a tireless chronicler of the monarchy, profiles the famously private Elizabeth by analyzing what little she shared with her subjects: seven decades’ worth of speeches. How Queen Elizabeth II's Style Shaped the World (The New York Times)

The longest-serving British monarch let her clothes do the talking for her.

That she did all this while somehow being considered outside of fashion, using the safety of frumpiness and the boringly appropriate to disguise just how tactical her choices were, was a master class in sartorial misdirection. Her political savvy extended to recycling garments and fabrics already in her wardrobe well before that became part of the broader celebrity drive for sustainability. She arrived in Dublin in 2011 in a bright green dress and coat when she became the first British monarch to visit the Republic of Ireland. The queen’s famous boxy handbags (she had over 200) were from Launer London, which she awarded a royal warrant in 1968; her cotton shirts were from Grosvenor Shirts Ltd. Yet an indelible part of her legacy — along with her steadfast dedication to her country, its traditions and the symbolism of a crown — was to create the prototype for a new kind of female power dressing in the latter half of the 20th century. In being restricted, largely, to pleasantries and pantomime (while at the same time participating in approximately 300 public events a year), she keenly understood that imagery could nonetheless speak volumes — and that she was dressing not only for her people, but also for posterity. She did, after all, learn to appreciate the use of a uniform early on, when she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945. 18 Times Queen Elizabeth II Ruled Pop Culture (Rolling Stone)

From 'The Queen' and 'A Royal Night Out' to 'The Simpsons' and tea with Paddington Bear, Queen Elizabeth II has been an indelible part of pop-culture ...

Cate Blanchette voiced the monarch in a Family Guy segment that re-imagined the show as a British sitcom and also featured a carriage accident — this time a fatal crash in a tunnel, a rather mean-spirited reference to the death of Princess Diana. In the early seasons, Foy plays Elizabeth II as a foil to her more flamboyant sister Margaret, a wiser-than-her-years matriarch with the weight of the world on her shoulders. South Park had her on exactly one episode, in which she tries to take back the U.S for the British. The Simpsons saw her nearly knighting Krusty the Clown in her first appearance, but she has a much larger role in a season 15 episode, “The Regina Monologues,” when the all-too-American family visits the U.K. Eddie Izzard lends an impression of the Queen for a later gag that reveals she’s a fan of a reality show about the oafish citizens of Springfield. In 2019, the Belgian animation studio nWave Pictures released The Queen’s Corgi, a kids’ movie that follows the misadventures of the monarch’s most precious purebred, Rex, who is accidentally exiled from Buckingham Palace and has to find his way back. During the opening ceremony of the 2012 games, Elizabeth appeared next to Craig in a short video, where Craig escorted her to a helicopter before the pair appeared to base jump out over the crowd at London Stadium. After Sophie and the giant send the queen a nightmare about kids being devoured, the queen is convinced to help the pair and sends her army after the giants. If you’re an Anglophile with a strong interest in watching a (semi) historically accurate version of the 1990s Disney classic My Date With the President’s Daughter, look no further than A Royal Night Out, a romp set in the 1940s starring Sarah Gadon as the pubescent Queen Elizabeth, with Bel Powley as her more rebellious sister Margaret (and silver fox Rupert Everett as their father King George VI). Sure, it was just in a promotional sketch for the Olympic Games, but the Queen herself got to take a turn as a Bond girl with Daniel Craig. “How about that Queen ladies and gentlemen, let’s have a nice round of applause.” Upon hearing of the real Queen Elizabeth’s death on Thursday, baseball legend Reggie Jackson — who portrays one of the would-be queen-killers — [tweeted](https://twitter.com/mroctober/status/1567959503081189376?s=20&t=x8e_DE4FD0CWz38WJQaw2Q), “Now we all know I was innocent !
