Sean McVay Reveals Rams RB Plan for Cam Akers and Darrell ... (Sports Illustrated)

Thursday night could give fans a sneak peak as the how the Rams plan to use their versatile backfield for the rest of the season.

Akers and Henderson should be seeing plenty of action against a Bills run defense that allowed 109.8 rush yards per game last season. Henderson began last season as the starter with Akers sidelined due to an Achilles injury. In general, it’s hard to identify a lot of receivers that would include since the value of a starting running back who gets close to 20 or more carries is generally so high. The Rams were far from a rushing powerhouse in Matthew Stafford’s first season with the team in 2021. But it’s likely the Rams will continue to feature one back as their star and feed him at least 17 touches and red-zone opportunities. Akers returned from a torn Achilles in the playoffs last year but produced only 172 yards on 67 carries. Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers spoke to FanSided on Monday, and explained how anxious he was watching Florida State beat LSU.

We have the right leaders in the locker room, we have the right soldiers, foot soldiers as well. Last year, Akers shockingly returned from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in July to play in the postseason while leading Los Angeles in carries during its Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Leading 24-17, Florida State allowed LSU to drive 99 yards for the apparent game-tying touchdown in the final seconds, only for the Seminoles to miraculously block the extra point.

Although it may be shocking to a lot of Rams fans, there is a real shot that Darrell Henderson will be the main back in the 2022 season. There is no need to hit the panic button on Akers in my eyes, we still have 16 more games to go in a long and treacherous NFL season. The Rams spent a second round pick on Akers a few years back, so that pick inevitably comes with certain expectations as it pertains to playing time and role on the team. Nevertheless, I feel that is not going to be the case, as Akers is simply too talented and too young to play second fiddle in the Rams rushing attack. Akers did miss about two weeks of training camp dealing with that injury, so the idea that he is still struggling with it is nowhere near out of the realm of possibility. In total, the Rams ran 17 designed run plays in Thursday’s season opener, with 13 of those going to Darrell Henderson.

If the Rams at least looked competitive against a team everyone already envisions hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the year, this would be a moot point. "This hasn't been the first setback that we've experienced and we're going to respond the right way. Could McVay had a little more confidence in the returning Cam Akers if he had a few summer snaps? That proved to be a literal case in many situations. McVay knows what he's doing and there's a reason that other contenders have opted to duplicate his preseason strategies. [pink smoke-spewing canisters](https://www.si.com/nfl/rams/nfl/rams/news/la-los-angeles-vs-buffalo-bills-flare-smoke-bomb-matthew-stafford-aaron-donald) spent more time in the Western New York end zone than those of the horned helmets did. But it's fair to say that opening scenes, particularly those of the sad sequels, can be foreboding signs of what's to come. Now let's make a few things clear: for one thing, there's more than enough time to right the Rams' ship. Furthermore, the preseason is indeed a mostly fruitless exercise, serving more as a future spring league showcase than a look into the NFL's future. combined with a joint practice that doubled as a Super Bowl rematch getting out of control ... There are a few worth discussing and exploring in a healthy manner: how concerned, for example, should the Rams be about, say, Matthew Stafford, Allen Robinson, or Cam Akers? Whether that's making better decisions from some of the play calls, just the overall feel for the flow of the game.
