Breaking the 'corporate medical playbook' that silences physicians ... (STAT)

A new organization aims to study the who, what, where, why, and how of workplace injustices and to support those who have been targeted.

In all of these cases, the response of leadership to the conflict was to make the clinician the problem, rather than the clinician’s valid concern(s). Physician Just Equity has been accumulating data, including the demographics of targets, the nature of workplace injustices, how conflicts are handled, and their outcomes. The response by their organizations’ leadership, however, was retaliation, which led to a hostile work environment often ending in a constructive discharge or termination without cause and often the loss of one’s job, career, financial security, identity, purpose, and well-being. The goal is to empower clinicians with information and resources to mitigate the harms of workplace injustices. These clinicians aimed to improve the quality and safety of patient care by bringing discriminatory clinical practices to light or reporting a work-related injustice. As a woman of color who was fortunate to be accepted to medical school 29 years ago, I thought that if I had the intelligence, grit, and credentials, I would succeed.

This Barrier-Breaking Pharma Executive Is Surprisingly Optimistic ... (Forbes)

Maya Martinez-Davis is trying to change that. As President of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in the US, she oversees the company's complex portfolio of therapeutics.

The other one is in the area of myelofibrosis, a type of cancer with no treatment for second line patients, and the third is for patients with chronic kidney disease that have anemia. They spend six months in each part of the organization so they can see different areas of the business and help them choose what to do next. I'm hoping that that will help because there was a lot of pushback from some groups on vaccination even before the pandemic. I still remember the days where I was the only Spanish speaking person in a room. Martinez-Davis: When I think of oncology specifically and the treatment of cancer, I consider where we were when I started. We have internships, partnerships, and a program that serves as a rotation of people throughout the organization when they start their career. By the end of 2021, 27% of senior leaders in the US were diverse. If you can get engagement to the point where every single person, regardless of what role they have in the organization, feels like that what they're doing is contributing to the overall goal, then that's the magic, right? Maybe I'm not the scientist who is developing the drugs, but I feel that what I do certainly impacts that evolution. My grandmother was convinced I should go to college in the US so I did. It was hard at the beginning, leading a large number of people across a lot of different therapeutic areas.
