Apple says the 60-hour option is "coming soon." Apple designed the Ultra to be more rugged so it can withstand the elements better if you take it to the mountains or deep under water. It's orange, which definitely stands out, but can be customized to launch an app when you tap it. It's twice as bright as before, so it's even easier to see outside. There's a larger crown, too, so it's easier to use while you're wearing gloves if you're diving or in the snow. It's made out of titanium.

Apple Watch Ultra Hands-On: Everything You Need to Know (CNET)

There are some new apps for the Ultra: A new Oceanic Plus diving app is specifically made for the Watch Ultra that looks at tides and water temperature; it also records dive depths and metrics. The extra cost, however, means it won't be a watch most people opt for. The new Compass app's unique Ultra ability to save waypoints and show walk-back directions without a cellular signal, using only GPS, could be one of the Ultra's biggest draws. The Ultra's biggest new feature, a significantly larger battery, is something the Apple Watch hasn't had since it debuted. Apple used to only launch one watch a year, but the Apple Watch SE introduced a more affordable model to the mix. Who is the Ultra for? Last year, an expected watch redesign never materialized, although Apple did increase the watch screen size. Also, it's by far the biggest Apple Watch of the lineup. The Apple Watch Ultra goes in the opposite direction: It's more expensive, but unlike previous fashion-driven Edition watches, the Ultra is aiming for function... The new design pushes its crown and side button into an extended side part that, alongside the new watch's bigger case and curved-with-flat-display contours, make it seem more James Cameron than any previous Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Ultra is the most rugged and advanced Apple Watch yet, designed for explorers, divers and high-performance athletes.

The watch starts at $799, with a variety of band options that include an [Alpine Loop](https://apple.sjv.io/c/1442537/435031/7613?subId1=0908applewatchultra&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fshop%2Fbuy-watch%2Fapple-watch-ultra%3FpreSelect%3Dfalse%26product%3DMQEW3LL%2FA%26step%3Ddetail) for outdoor adventuring, a [Trail Loop](https://apple.sjv.io/c/1442537/435031/7613?subId1=0908applewatchultra&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fshop%2Fbuy-watch%2Fapple-watch-ultra%3FpreSelect%3Dfalse%26product%3DMQF33LL%2FA%26step%3Ddetail) for endurance athletes and an [Ocean Band](https://apple.sjv.io/c/1442537/435031/7613?subId1=0908applewatchultra&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fshop%2Fbuy-watch%2Fapple-watch-ultra%2F49mm-cellular-titanium-midnight-ocean-band-onesize) for those planning to go underwater. Finally, the Ultra offers three new specialty bands for running, hiking and diving, each with its own characteristics that Apple says were designed for each type of athlete. The GPS in the watch got a boost, too, featuring dual-frequency L1 and L5 bands. The Apple Watch Ultra is crafted from aerospace-grade titanium and features a flat sapphire front crystal screen. Using the new Oceanic+ app — which will be available later this year — the Ultra works like a dive computer. For hikers and outdoors lovers of all levels, the new compass app in watchOS 9 (available on Sept 12) enables precise waypoint tracking as well as bearing marking and can show latitude, longitude, elevation, and incline. I know I’m seriously considering it as a one-device for all, whether I’m diving or not. It’s a rugged, long-lasting beast of a watch, and Apple has packed just about every feature into the gadget, from increased battery life to more precise GPS to a loud siren to signal where you are. And, the crown and side button have been enlarged and raised, so they can be better accessed while wearing gloves. It’s water resistant down to about 330 feet (100m) compared to the Series 8’s 164 feet (50m), IP6X dust resistant, and adds the MIL-STD 810H certification, which means this thing meets the US Department of Defense environmental engineering standards. [Apple Watch Series 8 and SE](https://www.cnn.com/cnn-underscored/electronics/apple-watch-series-8-se-where-to-pre-order), including the new temperature sensors, ovulation estimates, and crash detection, but it adds a screen that is larger (49mm compared to the Series 8’s 45mm) and brighter (2000 nits compared to 1000 nits), as well, new ruggedness standards. As an avid diver, it made sense that a simple, bright display at 100 feet would be far better than the grey-on-grey, hyper-complicated dive computers I’d used.

Apple Watch Ultra hands-on: Big screen, big battery, big price (Tom's Guide)

The Apple Watch Ultra caters to the adventure-minded with a 49-millimeter display, durable design and a collection of outdoor sports features.

Apple is working with Huish Outdoors to turn the Apple Watch Ultra into an on-wrist diving computer. I've been known to dabble in outdoor sports for testing devices like the Apple Watch Ultra. A final thing I had no way of testing (and probably never will, truthfully) is the Apple Watch Ultra diving features. On the left side of the Apple Watch Ultra is an added action button, which can be programmed as a quick-launch for an assigned purpose. So the Apple Watch Ultra's 36-hour rated battery life sounds pretty spectacular. The Apple Watch Ultra costs $799 (AU$1,299). The Trail Loop, meanwhile, is the thinnest Apple Watch band yet, promising increased elasticity and a handy tab for making quick-fit adjustments without taking off the watch. The display is supposedly two times brighter than any Apple Watch display before, which isn't something I could gauge on the spot but will be interesting to see in direct sunlight. In addition to an especially durable design, the Apple Watch Ultra offers an additional action button, more substantial digital crown, a safety siren and a special selection of watch bands. But if you want know how it compares to the regular Apple Watch, this Apple Watch Ultra hands-on goes over the key differences. [Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro](https://www.tomsguide.com/reviews/samsung-galaxy-watch-5-pro) for this reason. In other words, cellular connectivity isn't optional the way it is for the Apple Watch 8, which starts at $399 (AU$649) for the GPS-only version.

The Apple Watch Ultra is the star of the show because it isn’t something we’ve seen before. GQ France, for example, shows one of the new bands in a Twitter video: Inside, there’s a new temperature sensor, though it’s not something I was able to really check out here in Cupertino. CNET was able to give a hands-on on the new Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE: The media in attendance at the event are sharing hands-on photos, videos, and impressions after handling the new hardware. Not only is it the biggest Apple Watch screen, but it’s also the brightest at 2,000 nits.

For example, you can (at the time of writing) still take delivery on September 23 if you order the Watch with the Alpine Loop in green, and in the smallest size. Designed specifically for endurance athletes and runners, the Trail Loop band is the thinnest Apple Watch band to date. Swap the green for starlight, and then you’re back to September 23 in any of the three sizes. Molded from a flexible fluoroelastomer, it stretches and utilizes the tubular geometry for a secure fit. With explorers in mind, the Alpine Loop band features two integrated layers made from one continuous weaving process that eliminates the need for stitching.
