SANDUSKY, Ohio (Gray News) – One of the world's most famous roller coasters is closing. Cedar Point, an amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, announced Tuesday ...
The tallest roller coaster in the world is Kingda Ka, a 456-foot-tall ride at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. Park officials did not say why the ride is being closed after all these years. The 44-year-old suffered brain damage.
Cedar Point, the Sandusky, Ohio, amusement park on a Lake Erie peninsula, said Tuesday morning via Twitter that the thrill ride is "being retired."
Computers calibrated the force required to get over the top based on the weight of the passengers and weather conditions. In 2003, the ride was shut down from June 27 to July 3, and daily breakdowns made the three-hour wait to get on it even scarier. Ohio officials said it was an L-shaped bracket that sat at the back of the train car. A new kind of ride nearly two decades ago, the Top Thrill Dragster worked like a slingshot. It would take you to 120 mph in 4 seconds and directly up 420 feet, almost as high as the Penobscot Building. Cedar Point — the Sandusky, Ohio, amusement park on a peninsula along Lake Erie — said Tuesday morning via social media that the thrill ride is "being retired."
Considered the world's second tallest roller coaster, the ride is being shut after a woman was injured in 2021 when a metal object flew off the ride.
The state said there was no evidence that Cedar Point acted illegally or had reason to believe the ride, the world’s second-tallest roller coaster at 420 feet high, was unsafe before an object flew off it and struck the woman in the head. The Top Thrill Dragster opened in 2003. The ride lasts less than 20 seconds. After the incident, the park closed the ride while officials conducted an investigation. The object was later determined to be an L-shaped metal bracket attached to the back of the train and hovers above the track, said Cedar Point officials. According to a preliminary investigation, the incident happened at about 4:30 p.m.
The coaster has been closed since a horrific accident at the Sandusky amusement park last year.
Clark said the park will release more information on what exactly will replace Top Thrill Dragster (”as you know it”) at its centrally located spot on the midway between the Corkscrew and Magnum XL-200 at a later date. Avalanche Run became Disaster Transport, Mantis became Rougarou and the Mean Streak became Steel Vengeance with each new attraction utilizing much of the existing structure. The report outlined a series of steps Cedar Point needed to take before reopening the coaster. The ride launched parkgoers up a giant 90-degree hill before plummeting them down at a maximum speed of 120 miles per hour. The roller coaster that dominates the Sandusky park's skyline has sat idle since a serious injury occurred to a guest on the ride last August.

The new coaster will feature cars that spin 360 degrees as it navigates 1,312 feet of dipping and twisting orange track. Riders were injured in a pair of previous mishaps on the coaster. The fact that Cedar Point still has 16 roller coasters in its lineup is still impressive, Ringas said, as many so-called major parks boast less than 10. The piece of metal described as about the size of "a man's hand" struck the woman Aug. Ringas, who once lived near Cincinnati but now calls Virginia home, said she will miss the Dragster, having ridden it some 50 times over the years. "There was just nothing like it on Earth." The accident left 44-year-old Michigan resident Rachel Hawes in intensive care with a brain injury, the family said in a statement after the accident. And it couldn't be more different size-wise and otherwise. State investigators spent five months looking into the cause of the accident. It also boasted faux Goodyear Tires when it first opened.

The Cedar Point amusement park in the Ohio town of Sandusky has shut down its popular Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster.
But it was later eclipsed by the Kingda Ka ride at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. The 420-foot high roller coaster, which reached speeds of 120 mph, has been closed since Aug. At the time it opened in 2003, it was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world.
Ohio's tallest and fastest ride is being retired a year after seriously injuring a woman in line.
What they're saying: "Cedar Point's legacy of ride innovation continues," the park said in a statement. State of play: Standing 420 feet tall, Top Thrill Dragster was the largest coaster in the world when it opened in 2003. Why it matters: The announcement ends a year of speculation over the fate of Ohio's tallest and fastest ride.

An investigation followed, but officials found Cedar Point didn't violate any rules related to the accident. The ride opened in 2003 and set four records at the time: the fastest roller coaster, the tallest roller coaster drop, world's tallest complete circuit roller coaster and the tallest roller coaster, according to its website. I don’t know.”
