Pegula's career has been spiked by injuries, and there was a time where she could have easily walked away from the sport. This comes after her 2-1 victory over Yuan Yue last weekend where she dominated in the final set, showing just how dangerous she can be. He started East Resources in 1983 after loaning $7,500 from friends and family, to say it paid off would be an understatement. The family's net worth is £5.8 billion. Now in the knockout rounds of a major tournament and the eighth seed in the world, this epitomises the burning desire that Pegula has to achieve - backed by billions, fazed by nothing. Then again, that speaks volumes about the drive of US Open star Jessica Pegula.

“I'm sure if you asked us if we wanted to be playing each other in the finals, that would be great,” Pegula said. It would be really fun but there's a long way to go until that could happen and a lot of things could happen, and you never know. “We went to a Mets game, we went to a Yankees game. When it first happened, I first realized I was probably going to have to get surgery, I was like down and out for a couple days. “She played tennis in juniors and college, so I was always around the tennis courts, watching her matches, watching her practice. It hasn’t been a smooth ascent to the top of the rankings. Pegula is the first daughter of a billionaire to play on the WTA Tour since Carling Bassett of Canada, the daughter of John F. Just try to not sit in my room and order Uber Eats.” “I think I tried to do that today. He made a fortune in oil and gas and has since turned it into a sports empire that includes the Bills and Sabres. It’s the first time I’ve beaten her too, so that was nice.” Pegula roared back from an 0-2 deficit in the second set, winning the match when Kvitova sent a backhand wide on match point.

“I’m just proud that I didn’t lose hope because she was playing really good in the first set,” Swiatek said after seeing off her highly-rated opponent, who reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. I know some people do, but I’m aware of that and I know that.” I thought I handled my nerves really well and that was the first time I have beaten her as well and that’s always nice.”

Father Pegula is not in Flushing and may not come at all. “I don’t mind missing the game if I’m still playing,’’ Pegula, who will be playing Thursday night in the semifinals if she beats No.

Pegula ousts Kvitova, into US Open quarterfinals (WTA Tennis)

No.8 seed Jessica Pegula handled Petra Kvitova in straight sets Monday at the US Open to reach the quarterfinals of a major for the third time this season.

Pegula reached the semifinals in Toronto, losing to eventual champion Simona Halep, and the quarters in Cincy, again falling to the eventual winner, Caroline Garcia. That’s vaulted her into the Top 10 for the first time back in June -- and she’s held her position nicely. Pegula left the court, did some stretching, and never lost her composure. After Kvitova broke back and played three points on her serve, the rain returned. At the lowest point, she slammed her towel back into its bin with a snarl. She came out focused and methodically went to work on Kvitova. That was on clay, of course, and Pegula is a better player on hard courts, Kvitova saved two match points in the third round against Garbiñe Muguruza and seemed to be trending in the same direction. After breaking Kvitova to open the match, there was an eight-minute delay when rain visited Arthur Ashe Stadium. She screamed in the general direction of her box, and gave its occupants a sarcastic thumbs up when she double-faulted away a service game. “I just told myself not to get frustrated,” the No.8-seeded Pegula said later. She’s an unworldly 21-for-37 at the US Open.

“And I can get kind of hard on myself,” she said. Though the score by then was only 2-all, from that moment forward, Pegula in complete control. With Pegula serving at 0-2, Kvitova came forward and struck a deft crosscourt backhand volley winner, then took the next point for love-30—halfway towards earning a double-break lead. From 3-all on, Pegula won 12 of 14 points, a first-rate example of her exemplary match management skills and Kvitova’s narrow range of tactics. Over the course of the match, she’d hit 18 winners, compared to Pegula’s seven. “It doesn't make any sense.” She ended up with a frame she’d had strung last night at 51 pounds.
