Freddie returned to Zanzibar in 1963, when it obtained independence from the British Empire. He was about to take his first steps towards becoming Freddie Mercury. The building has been turned into a hotel, with a sign proudly displaying who once lived there. Farrock Bulsara was born to Bomi and Jer Bulsara at Zanzibar's Government Hospital on 5 September, 1946. But, long before he was Freddie, there was a little boy in Stone Town, Zanzibar, off the East Coast of Africa... The legend's Queen bandmates Brian May and Roger Taylor remembered him today, as they have every other year, with heartfelt posts.

According to Queen guitarist Brian May, Mercury modelled himself on Plant and tried to emulate him when he took to the stage. “I would say that Led Zeppelin are the greatest, and as a rock band they deserved the kind of success they got,” Mercury once said about the four-piece. Characteristically, the outwardly confident Mercury believed no other vocalist could compete with him, but he admired Robert Plant greatly and considered Led Zeppelin an unstoppable force.

Tragically his life was cut short at the age of just 45, when he died following a battle with AIDS on November 24, 1991.

May tells a story of how Freddie Mercury was desperate to keep recording with his band, knowing that they might have to finish songs without him. In Hutton’s biography, he said the Barcelona singer had been well enough to holiday in Switzerland a month before his passing but it became clear upon their return to Britain that his condition was deteriorating. Once back at their home at the Garden Lodge, in London's Kensington, the Zanzibar-born artist took to his bed where he slept and watched television with a rotation of trusted friends, including Jim and Mercury’s ex-girlfriend, Mary Austin. Queen continued to make music right up until the extravagant star’s death, with the band agreeing to protect his privacy after he opened up to them about contracting the disease.
