AEW's Sept. 4 PPV featured a new World champ, a shocking return, and so much more on a 15 match card. Break it down with us here.
Storm returned for a DDT to Baker and a DDT to Hayter for the win. High energy, chaotic action for the opener to get in the mood. That was the definition of a slugfest. It was the kind of match that demands and deserves time off to recover. It’s like he’s a slave to the drama to his own detriment. The return of Joe is a nice treat, and the moment for Harwood’s daughter was sweet. The iron is hot for Baker to put over Hayter to make a new star. AEW needs to pull the trigger on the breakup of Baker and Hayter after that. The dino carried JB’s body to the ring and slammed him through a table at the orders of Christian. The sad boy was sad about Jericho cheating to win. This match was good placement to pick up the energy again for the main event. Punk hit a neckbreaker and went for the GTS.
Punk originally won the belt in May, but was injured at the beginning of June, necessitating an interim champ to be crowned. Moxley won that tournament, then ...
This was a solid change of pace for the show, and furthered the intensity of the program. This show was formatted and structured very differently from yesterday’s Clash at the Castle event, but a key part of AEW’s success is that it is a different presentation than WWE. Perhaps that isn’t the worst thing—there was an abundance of wrestling to enjoy. It will be interesting to see what happens next with Moxley, who feels like he is better suited as a loner than as part of the Blackpool Combat Club. There was another six-man tag before the main event, as Darby Allin, Sting, and Miro defeated The House of Black. He looked like a star, and the Bucks added to the brilliance of the bout. It also advanced the story between Baker and Hayter, with Baker taking advantage of their partnership to try and steal the match away from Hayter. Christian Cage and Jungle Boy were up next, but this was less of a match and more of a progressing of an angle. The crowd would have exploded had Bowens and Caster pulled off the win, and it felt like this was the perfect time for them to win—but there was some outstanding heel work on display from Lee and Strickland. Wardlow pinned Lethal after four straight powerbombs, and a highlight during the aftermath was the return of Samoa Joe, who was written out of programming while filming Twisted Metal. There is an electricity about seeing Omega and the Bucks together, and we were treated to a Page-Omega sequence in the ring, the first since last November in their world title match. After the 13-minute mark, Stokely Hathaway’s men came out and cleaned house, The Rolling Stones’s “Sympathy for the Devil” then played, and a man in a devil’s mask came out to grab the casino chip for the victory.

“I gave him a f–king chance, it did not get handled, and you saw what I had to do, which is very regrettable, lowering myself to his f–king level. And I will still walk up and down this hallway and say ‘if you have a f–king problem with me, take it up with me.” “I’m trying to run a f–king business,” Punk continued. “It’s f–king unfortunate that I have to come up here and speak on this when I’m on my time and this is a f–king business. the fact that I have to get up and do this in 2022 is f–king embarrassing.” “What did I ever do in this world to deserve an empty-headed f–king dumbf–k like ‘Hangman’ Adam Page to go out on national television and f–king go into business for himself? Punk seemed to confirm that to be true and show him calling out Page as a way to prove a point to the young star about how to do proper business in his eyes. I understand sticking up for your f–king friends, I f–king get it, I stuck up for that guy [Cabana] more than anybody. “It’s not [Khan’s] position to make it very f–king clear,” Punk said. [Fightful Select reported](https://www.patreon.com/fightful) early Monday morning that the Bucks and Omega – who were originally scheduled to appear at the press conference after being crowned the first AEW trio champions — were “extremely pissed off” by Punk’s comments. He also said Punk had “nothing to do with any of the contracts.” Punk and his former friend had a falling out when they were both sued for defamation by ex-WWE doctor Chris Ammen for comments Punk made on Cabana’s “The Art of Wrestling Podcast” in 2014.

What did I ever do? And the fact that I have to get up here and do this in 2022 is f*cking embarrassing. The fact that I have to sit up here because we have irresponsible people who call themselves EVPs and couldn’t f*cking manage a Target and they spread lies and bullsh*t and put into the media that I got somebody fired when I have f*ck all to do with him, want nothing to do with him, do not care where he works, where he doesn’t work, where he eats, where he sleeps.

Or will All Out 2022 go down as the final time the House of Black and their titular leader graces AEW programming? Objectively speaking, that is not good; AEW has always postured itself as a company that is pro-wrestler-friendly and has allowed other performers to take some time away from the ring in order to focus on their mental health in the past. Will Black take an extended break away from the ring and recapture his love of professional wrestling? That was for the live fans, and it definitely got some people talking, so it is a thing that happened, but no, I can’t comment on that.” I’ve got people signed here for five years and people think that just because the CEO, Chairman, head of creative, those people changed in the competition, people I have five-year contracts with are going to magically switch teams? On paper, this wasn’t a particularly unusual way to end the match.
AEW All Out 2022 was five hours of continuous action and could prove to be one of the most important shows in All Elite Wrestling history.
What makes the Zero Hour a pre-show if it consists of four matches that take up the entire hour? It wouldn't be fair to complain about one company doing that and give excuses for the other. Who was in possession of the future title shot? At first, seeing several masked guys storm the ring and wreck shop felt like the second coming of WWE's Retribution. At least here, it was a genuine, natural response to prove The Acclaimed is over and would have been welcomed as champions with open arms. Instead, Hobbs won a glorified squash match out of nowhere just when it was starting to get going. Those two teams could tear the house down and this match might have just been the first taste of something great. These matches had potential to steal the show. Why should fans want to see Hobbs against Starks again, when the latter got destroyed? Wardlow's four powerbombs on Jay Lethal emphatically prove he should be done with that feud and move on to a new challenger for the TNT Championship. Whenever Swerve in Our Glory was on top, fans erupted if the tables turned. It should help drive the wedge even further between Page's tenuous friendships.
After unleashing on Adam Page and "irresponsible EVPs," Punk reportedly got in a real-life backstage scuffle with The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega.
Punk is reported to have taken a swing at Matt Jackson, and Nick Jackson reportedly sustained a blow to the eye from Steel. Steel is also said to have gotten in a melee with Kenny Omega, who's also an EVP, reportedly biting him in the brawl. "If you're an EVP, you don't try to middle your top babyface and try to get your niche audience on the internet to hate him for some made-up, bull**** rumor," Punk said. Punk then spoke of Page's comments in their pre-Double or Nothing promo in May: "The fact that I have to get up here and do this in 2022 is f****** embarrassing... Page and Cabana were the only people Punk explicitly named. [sued Punk for $1.2 million](https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/colt-cabana-cm-punk-contract-legal-fees-lawsuit/), alleging that Punk reneged on a pledge to cover Cabana's legal fees for the Amman case. "The apology must be as loud and as public as the disrespect," Punk said. According to several wrestling publications, a fight broke out between CM Punk and AEW producer Ace Steel on one side and Kenny Omega, Matt and Nick Jackson on the other. "And if anybody else has a problem with the champion, I suggest you come on down." [Wrestling Observer](https://www.f4wonline.com/news/aew/cm-punk-ace-steel-fight-with-young-bucks-kenny-omega-after-aew-all-out), Punk took a swing at Matt Jackson, while Nick Jackson was struck in the eye by a chair thrown by Steel. But all of that has almost entirely forgotten in the hours after the event thanks to several statements CM Punk made at the post-show media scrum. Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, lashed out at "Hangman" Adam Page, "The Young Bucks" Matt and Nick Jackson, and Scott "Colt Cabana" Colton.

But the second word is wrestling, and this is not a doll factory, this is not a normal place of business. Though the story was still developing at the time, even the “in the mud” reporting was salacious, to say the least. [Josh Nason](https://www.f4wonline.com/author/joshnason) also of Wrestling Observer [reported](https://www.f4wonline.com/news/aew/cm-punk-ace-steel-fight-with-young-bucks-kenny-omega-after-aew-all-out) on Monday, things were even worse than initially reported, with “Punk allegedly starting things by swinging fists at the Bucks’ Matt Jackson. Sports Entertainers” match between Bryan Danielson and Chris Jericho for the allegiances of Daniel Garcia, or even the main event bout between CM Punk and Jon Moxley, tw0 men who clearly don’t like each other. Promotors build up long-term storylines with complex emotions, both imagined and with a shred of truth to them, and the performers in the ring are tasked with acting out these interactions as a sort of live-action play. There were title changes – though not the one many an Acclaimed fan wanted to see – titles christened, and more than a few deep-seated grudges that were either finished off for good or elevated even further.
WWE is holding their latest episode of RAW on Monday night, but they are very aware of the explosive situation regarding CM Punk and AEW.

All Out was a stellar show packed with high-end matches, but all AEW fans seem to be paying attention to is CM Punk's media scrum and the aftermath.
A glance at AEW's subreddit and the SquaredCircle subreddit show the same thing. It isn't until the 22nd-most searched phrase (aew all out results) that something about the pay-per-view itself appears in the zeitgeist. Over the last 24 hours, 14 of the top 25 most-searched phrases next to AEW are related to the media scrum and the brawl that happened after. For the uninitiated, know that Punk and the Being The Elite guys have heat with each other that dates back to 2019 and that it only just now truly came to a head following the All Out media gathering. Instead, all fans have been concerned with is Punk's media scrum and the fight that reportedly broke out after. With WWE picking up steam every week under the guidance of Triple H, the pressure is on Tony Khan and the All Elite Wrestling roster to pick up the pace and put on high-end matches with intriguing storylines.

AEW All Out's main event on Sunday night featuring CM Punk and Jon Moxley got the promotion back on track with an unexpected twist:.
AEW course-corrected with the groundwork laid here for Punk-MJF and it doubles as a chance to elevate the company to previously unseen heights. And the challenger for the title, while a pillar of AEW itself, is only 26 years old and an actual generational free agent in the industry. We're also going to have to talk about the fact both Moxley and then MJF got chants there, which could always eventually be cause for Punk to be the one who works the heel role if fans side with MJF's plight against the machine itself. None of this is to say the journey here was perfect. The plight and rise of the homegrown "Hangman" Adam Page remains the top example. Astute fans, of course, easily picked up on the parallels between MJF's situation and CM Punk's past woes in places like WWE.
Maxwell Jacob Friedman has returned to All Elite Wrestling and has a date with two-time world champion CM Punk.
There were reports on Twitter that Black, who had said to how asked for his release because of his booking and to work on his mental health, hugged the rest of his teammates, took a bow and blew the crown a kiss. The bulk of the storytelling was done around Baker and Hayter, the two friends in the match. Jericho then told him he and the Jericho Appreciation Society won’t be out to support him when he faces Wheeler Yuta for the ROH Pure title Wednesday on Dynamite. After the call played, a clip of CM Punk from Ring of Honor saying he’s a snake and “the greatest trick the devil ever played was pretending he didn’t exist” – something MJF said to Punk in a promo of his own. Omega pounced for the pin to crown he and the Young Bucks the inaugural champions as a distraught Page could only console Silver. The beef MJF had with the company, both in storyline and potentially in real life, is that he wasn’t happy with his contract and that led to him asking Khan to fire him on TV back in June. Cage, who was slapped by Jungle Boy’s mom sitting ringside, came out with a shirt that read “Worked everyone.” We proceed to see Luchasaurus turn on Jungle Boy by power bombing him onto a steal grate on the stage and then through a table. A voice mail from AEW president Tony Khan to MJF then played saying his absence was really hurting the company and he would pay him an amount that was bleeped out if he showed up to All Out for the Casino Ladder match, and that he would not have to sign a contract extension. He then waited to hand it to “The Joker”, who arrived in a white devil mask as The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy to the Devil” played. “The Best in the World”, who had lost to Moxley in less than three minutes on “Dynamite” two weeks ago, fought through everything – even a Death Rider finisher that he kicked out of. The Joker, who now has the right to a future AEW world championship match, failed to reveal himself – for now. It provided the final image fans hoped for to close a mixed-bag show that was still more good than bad.
CM Punk won the AEW World Championship at All Out, but he had a lot to get off his chest following the pay-per-view.
The AEW World Champion later said he was “defending myself,” with his call out of Page. “They spread lies and put into the media that I got somebody fired when I have f–k all to do with him.” Punk directed a lot of ire towards the company’s EVPs. And while the massive return of MJF had everyone else talking, Punk did a lot of talking of his own. “My relationship with Scott Colton ended long before I paid all his bills,” Punk told the media. The media scrum is not a rarity for the company.

I’m still f***ing pissed about (1992).” It’s pretty clear that ‘The Best in the World’ has never been able to get over it. Instead, Captain Charisma had a plan, proving that he was always in the head of Luchasaurus. The future is bright, and The Acclaimed will soon be champions, an idea that was almost inconceivable a few months back in a packed division. It was a disappointing result but also sets the stage for something special. The Best in the World was once more in front of a hometown Chicago crowd with the AEW World Championship on the line. The Acclaimed walked into a match with Swerve in Our Glory as the clear underdogs. This made Swerve in Our Glory perfect foils to elevate The Acclaimed. This is a story that has been months, arguably years, in the making. He was the star of the show. It was handed to a masked man, who did not reveal himself in the moment.
