College football report card: Iowa's offensive offense among the ... (USA TODAY)

The putrid offensive display put forth by Iowa and South Dakota State was one of the many lowlights in college football's Week 1.

The 7-3 final score (two safeties and a field goal for Iowa) evoked memories of leather helmets and grainy football highlights. The teams had never faced each other in football, and hopefully we will never see this matchup again. The Hawkeyes welcomed South Dakota State, a two-touchdown underdog more than willing to take its $600,000 payday and bruised pride and bodies back to The Mount Rushmore State. For his punting woes, Roberts gets a 5-out-of-5 Orlovskys on the "what the hell?" The teams combined for 21 punts, 286 total yards, just seven third-down conversions (on 33 attempts) and they each averaged less than two yards per rushing attempt. In the fourth quarter and with his team down 49-10, Roberts again went back to punt and this time the rush got home. South Carolina State wasn’t winning against UCF, so when the Bulldogs lined up to punt in the first quarter, one commentator stated he wouldn’t anticipate a fake punt on fourth-and-19 from their own 30-yard line Then the arms start to "fail," and for the finale, he goes face-first into the turf. Also, mean tweeters will be blocked and emails to the inbox to complain will directly enter the trash folder. That appeared to be the case for Tennessee offensive lineman Darnell Wright in Thursday's game against Ball State. This week promises to be exciting with most of the nation’s teams seeing their first action. High marks will be only for the spectacular, and failing grades have no chance of being reversed.

LSU vs. Florida State football preview, prediction (CalBearsMaven)

Game 1 of the Brian Kelly experience kicks off Sunday night as the new-look LSU Tigers open the 2022 college football season against Florida State.

[Bookmark](https://si.com/fannation/college/cfb-hq) - Oklahoma - Michigan In their Week 0 win over Duquesne, the Seminoles racked up 406 yards on the ground, just the 5th 200-plus rushing yard game in school history, and the 1st time it had 3 100-yard ball carriers in the same game. He's a potential difference-maker at the position, throwing 15 TDs and six picks last fall, and he didn't have a turnover in five games. This game will give us a very small, but important, sample size, of how Kelly has built his roster and how he works in certain game situations before embarking on the brutal SEC West schedule.

BCI Debates: College Football Playoffs (BC Interruption)

Curtis: Thoughts on this? Sources: The CFP Board of Managers has decided on a 12-team College Football Playoff during today's meeting.

But if you’re a program with punters chance of making the playoffs in a way you didn’t before, that makes your program more attractive for good recruits. Now those guys are still the class of the field, but the new car has made everyone a player. They will continue to exist to be content for gamblers and ESPN, and they will be nice games for the players and development opportunities. It’s a format that makes more money for everyone and provides a path to success for a greater number of schools. And yet the illusion of a chance will suck in more fans, different teams being in will freshen it up. Curtis: And it involves all of college football in a way that it didn’t before, just like you both were talking about. And then for every other conference, more teams have a shot at the lottery ticket. It will make for juicier out-of-conference scheduling, as the benefit of bolstering your résumé now outweighs the risk of an extra loss. So you kind of had the worst of both worlds in terms of making the regular season less interesting and important. If their team isn’t in it they are less likely to turn on the championship. One of the main drivers of this College Football Playoff expansion was money. If that happens I’m all in on self-relegating to the fifth or sixth best conference.

How College Football Playoff expansion will affect realignment, job ... (CBSSports.com)

The SEC has won 12 of the last 16 national championships. It sucked in the Big 12's two best teams (Texas and Oklahoma) in what became a movement about movement ...

No. That's your list of glass slippers in the history of the game. In the end, the best teams are likely to rise to the top -- as they do in the Final Four -- but it's about the access. In the history of the game. ESPN and Fox have interests what the Big 12 and Pac-12 look like in the future. At that point, it might become a situation of who is hot at the end of the season, not who is necessarily the best all year. Another consideration: Perhaps the ACC, given the strength of some of its programs, sits on a tier of its own earning a sum between the Power Two and the Big 12 and Pac-12. Basically, whatever kind of weight the SEC and Big Ten throw around the room will be a huge factor. "It's [the Power Two] and everyone else," said AAC commissioner Mike Aresco in reference to the SEC and Big Ten. Never in the history of the game have the game's best brands and programs been concentrated in such small spaces (two conferences at the top of the game). The SEC and Big Ten were not only monopolizing the money, viewers and talent, they were monopolizing the game. It sucked in the Big 12's two best teams (Texas and Oklahoma) in what became a movement about movement.

College football rankings: Predicting the AP Top 25 poll for Week 2 (CalBearsMaven)

25. Texas. A good enough debut for Quinn Ewers against UL Monroe might be enough to put the Longhorns in the poll and make next week's game against Alabama ...

A 55-0 beatdown in which Bryce Young rushed for 100 yards and a score and threw for five others while Bama's backs amassed 278 yards on the ground. A closer than expected game in the 'Shoe for an offense that didn't look its usual self, but was playing a talented Irish defense that was inspired all night. Against Rice, to be sure, but things look good for a defense that had three pick-sixes in the opener. The injury to Jaxon Smith-Njigba is something to watch out for, but there are other pieces to make this offense move, as OSU's late 14-0 scoring stretch to win the game proved. McCarthy brings a dynamism to the position that Michigan has lacked in recent years. ND led this thing 10-7 in the third behind a strong defensive showing until late. The offense that ranked top 10 in college football a year ago looks as good as advertised with Hendon Hooker behind the wheel. After losing Sam Hartman to a medical condition, the Deacs started the season with a 34-point win over VMI. A win is a win, though. Expect a drop for the Utes. No matter how good Florida looks, and it does look good, top 25 voters will punish this team for losing to an unranked club coming off a losing season with a new coach. The quarterback accounted for 4 TDs in a beatdown of Ball State.

College Football Week 1 takeaways: Georgia still looks like No. 1 ... (Sporting News)

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix's pass sailed high on fourth-and-goal with 1:22 remaining. Georgia linebacker Marvin Jones Jr. raised his arms in celebration.

The Hawkeyes have won the last six meetings against rival Iowa State, a streak that is in jeopardy in Week 2. The Hurricanes should take care of business in Week 2 against Southern Miss, which would set up a beauty against No. McNamara was 1 of 6 for four yards in the red zone and was nearly intercepted. McCarthy, who finished 4 of 4 for 30 yards and added three carries for 50 yards, gets the start against Hawaii in Week 2. - North Carolina beat Appalachian State in a 63-61 shootout in which 62 points were scored in the fourth quarter. It was an almost even game, but a Gators' goal-line stand in the third quarter and a goal-line interception in the fourth were missed opportunities for Utah. These are the three best teams in the FBS, and there is a gap. 7 Utah was the only loser in a 29-26 thriller at The Swamp against Florida. Ohio State flashed a new-look Jim Knowles-led defense that will pair beautifully with the offense in a 21-10 victory against No. Will this bump the Bulldogs up in the AP Poll? There is no complacency in Athens, Ga., and the offense is terrifying. In the wins against Michigan, Alabama and Oregon, he averaged 301.7 passing yards with seven TDS and no interceptions.

The Tigers and Seminoles clash inside the Caesars Superdome on Sunday as the Week 1 action rolls along.

Replay showed that he was in bounds, but LSU snapped the ball on the whistle to get the final play off in regulation. But Damian Ramos' extra point was blocked with no time left on the clock to give the 'Noles the win. Despite a roaring comeback taking advantage of Florida State miscues, it was LSU who made the final mistake on Sunday night in a 24-23 victory by the Seminoles at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Week 1 college football observations: Impressive starts for ... (USA TODAY)

For nine months, Oklahoma heard about how much it had lost with the departure of coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams to Southern California.

It was the kind of showing you'd want from a team in a road opener with a big game on deck and proves this team is mature enough to handle the challenge. The Cougars face a demanding schedule with matchups against Baylor, Oregon, Arkansas and Notre Dame, but there's enough talent for Kalani Sitake's team to make a run at the New Year's Six. It led by 14 in the second half and by seven when a fourth-quarter drive got to the ECU 1. The duo connected for three touchdowns in the 38-20 victory. It damages the league's playoff possibilities and further casts doubt on where it stands after the latest round of conference realignment. Four runs into the line resulted in no points as Dave Doeren eschewed a field goal and a two-score lead. East Carolina was always going to be a dangerous opener on the road. That's been the formula in the Sam Pittman era and it worked effectively against the Bearcats. However, it was an important moment to kick off a new era for one of the elite programs in the sport. While a lot of attention has been paid to Texas A&M as the second-best team in the SEC West, the Razorbacks clearly have a claim to that spot, especially after beating the Aggies last season. But the three-plus-hour performance was a great start and shows that better things are ahead, and that should be celebrated after all the critics were sounding off since the end of last season. The Sooners were going to fall apart.

College football rankings: ESPN updates Top 25 ahead of Week 2 ... (CalBearsMaven)

ESPN Football Power Index (FPI) college football rankings and computer prediction model are a measure of team strength that predicts a team's future performance ...

[Bookmark](https://si.com/fannation/college/cfb-hq) Where Michigan is now: Cade McNamara didn't sound happy that Jim Harbaugh went to J.J. Judging by returning players on defense and an expected increase in productivity from quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, this team should be in the ACC chase all season, but Miami looks like a real contender, too. A good foundation to build from with a road game at Texas A&M coming in two weeks. Tyler Buchner looked solid early, taking a lead in the first half, but was thrown off schedule by OSU's front 7 over the rest of the game. Where Oklahoma is now: A predictably solid offensive showing as Dillon Gabriel helped create a 21-0 lead and racked up over 300 yards before halftime. Where LSU is now: We'll know more about LSU after Sunday night's opener against Florida State, and how well Brian Kelly was able to patch up needs at quarterback, offensive line, and defensive back. Will Rogers was predictably productive, passing for five TDs and a pick while leading the offense for 542 total yards going 38 of 49 passing, but it was sloppy fourth quarter. Where Utah is now: Licking its wounds after a physical game in the very humid Swamp against Florida and likely mourning the loss of its CFP chances following the close loss to the Gators. But there are some questions about whether Haynes King has a full grasp of this offense and a genuine concern over A&M's ability to run the ball after running for 110 yards and didn't have a single rusher over 45 yards. Where Oklahoma State is now: Wishing it had Jim Knowles calling this defense again after the Cowboys' new look D allowed 44 points to Central Michigan and lost the yardage battle 546 to 531. Where Florida is now: Coming off a statement upset over No.

No. He’ll now hit the road to play in a tough environment, which is a lot to ask of a player we’re still trying to figure out. Oregon State was awfully impressive against Boise State in the opener, but Jake Haener will be a much different test for the Beavers. This one is tricky, although Billy Napier might be the right coach at the right time for UF. We have a long way to go, but this will go down as one of the best games we see all year. The oddsmakers seem to have been taking note as well with this spread, which shows the home team plenty of respect. The concern I have for Texas in this matchup, however, is how it plans to handle Will Anderson Jr. It will be crucial for him to play a clean game this week. I don’t think I would budge at 22-1, which is where he sat Sunday afternoon, although I will say this: He has a ton of talent and is a ton of fun to watch. The Buckeyes closed as 17-point favorites, and they failed to cover that number. Yes, be worried about watering down the regular season, although frankly it will bring more programs into the mix and probably do the opposite. Days with playoff games, no matter when they occur on the calendar, will be wonderful.
