Wisconsin vs. Illinois State: Recruiting visitor list (CalBearsMaven)

The Wisconsin Badgers have some top football and basketball players on campus this weekend, here is a rolling thread of who is visiting Madison.

Flottmeyer plays quarterback for Aquinas High School in La Crosse (Wis.). Making the trip from Indiana, he has been in contact with Wisconsin for a while now and his father is originally from Wisconsin despite currently being a professor at Indiana. [Travis Graf of the Rivals Network](https://twitter.com/TravisGrafHoops/status/1565144838567350274?s=20&t=R_ANoHsWos7iMfwVXrx-_Q), Freitag was at Minnesota on Friday for a visit and will be in Madison for the Illinois State game. Athlete Andre Lovett is another player that could earn an offer this weekend. I was able to confirm with four-star running back Corey Smith of Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha (Wis.) that he will be in attendance. Four-star defensive end Eddie Tuerk of Illinois will also be on campus for the Badgers. The Badgers extended an offer to Nebraska tight end Carter Nelson before the game on Saturday while he was on campus. He is one of the best overall athletes in the state of Minnesota in the 2024 class and has been a frequent visitor for Wisconsin the past couple of years. Cram is currently a consensus three-star prospect. The Badgers are still looking for a quarterback this cycle and Browne is a potential offer candidate. He threw for over 350 yards and had four total touchdowns in his latest game this season. One of the more intriguing names to watch this weekend is 2023 quarterback Ryan Browne.

Wisconsin uses big plays on defense and offense to overcome ... (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

MADISON – This was the type of season-opening victory coaches love. Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst saw his football team score with big plays – one on defense ...

Mertz hit Chimere Dike for gains of 74 and 16 yards on UW’s next possession, with the shorter throw a touchdown to help push the lad to 31-0. He was lined up on left hash of the UW formation, read the eyes of quarterback Zack Annexstad and saw a receiver breaking across the middle, to his right. Next up is a home game against Washington State of the Pacific 12. Allen started to his left but was hit at the 3. Cornerback Jay Shaw was called for holding on a punt return, putting the ball at the UW 8. Mertz finished 6 of 7 for 59 yards in the opening half, with the lone incompletion a drop by wide receiver Markus Allen. That broke the mark of 99 yards, set by safety Joe Ferguson in 2017 against Utah State. Allen broke the mark of 93 yards, set in 2013 by James White against Indiana. Nose tackle Keeanu Benton and safety Hunter Wohler were assessed personal fouls to keep Illinois State’s second drive alive. Allen capped the march with a 1-yard dive on fourth and goal with 9:39 left in the third quarter. Safety John Torchio recorded UW’s first touchdown, with the first record of the night. Braelon Allen cleaned up the mess by racing 96 yards for a touchdown, to break White’s record and help UW take a 14-0 lead with 13:30 left in the half.

With how much Wisconsin lost, specifically in the linebacker room, it’s remarkable how we are talking about this defense headed into 2022. This is a game where a second quarterback may come in late with the outcome already decided, but which quarterback will it be? Instead, he took on the role of kickoff specialist that will go to Jack Van Dyke for the Badgers. After an injury to backup quarterback Chase Wolf that will likely result in missing the entire season, where does Wisconsin go at backup quarterback? The Badgers will be featuring a defense with limitless potential and a number of new faces. While the outcome likely won’t be in question late into the Madison night, there are a number of key areas Wisconsin can show improvement in.

WOW: Wisconsin football broke these two school records before ... (Madison.com)

Braelon Allen and John Torchio both did something in the first half that never before had been done in the history of Wisconsin Badgers football.

Why UW would get in: The Badgers were the third-highest-ranked team to not win a conference title. The Badgers tallied ranked wins against Michigan, Iowa and Minnesota, the last of which clinched the Big Ten West division. What made the Badgers good: A stellar defense posted four shutouts and Jonathan Taylor put together a second Doak Walker-award winning season. The Badgers had an undefeated regular season featuring two wins over ranked opponents, and their lone loss was a one-possession game against a one-loss Ohio State team. Only three opponents scored 20 or more points against UW, and the Badgers were 2-1 in those games. What made the Badgers good: A stellar backfield of Montee Ball, John Clay and James White led the way while quarterback Scott Tolzien completed 72.9% of his passes, a school record that still stands. 5 in the final BCS bowl standings and earning a trip to the Rose Bowl. Montee Ball, James White and Melvin Gordon ran wild in the backfield and UW scored 44.1 points per game. The board voted for a 12-team model consisting of the six highest-ranked conference champions and six highest-ranked at-large teams. However, the Badgers only played one AP-ranked team — No. Here are the five most recent times the Badgers would have been playoff-bound had 12 teams qualified for the playoffs. The sophomore broke the record held by James White, who ran for a 93-yard touchdown against Indiana on Nov.

QB Graham Mertz: After a difficult season as the Badgers QB1, all eyes were on the Kansas native in the season opener. Despite carrying the ball just 14 times, the Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin native, ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore running back looked patient, strong, and intentional with his runs. That is until ‘the jewelry thief,’ John Torchio, read Illinois State quarterback Zack Annexstad like an open book and recorded a 100-yard pick-six to put the Badgers up 7-0. 3 things that stood out in Wisconsin's big win over Illinois State ... (Kenosha News)

The Badgers defeated the Redbirds 38-0 behind strong performances from Graham Mertz, Braelon Allen and their defense.

That is a program record for the longest interception return. Much of that is because of the on-field success demonstrated by the Badgers across the decades. Torchio read the eyes of Illinois State (0-1) quarterback Zack Annexstad and snagged a pass over the middle, then sprinted down the Badgers’ sideline for a 100-yard touchdown, the longest play in program history. Plays like that that move that chains and avoid drives ending will only make the Badgers better down the road. The Badgers appeared to be playing in quicksand early in their season opener, as they were a step late to a number of plays and made costly mental errors that kept Illinois State drives alive. UW knew it wouldn’t match last season’s defense in terms of being great from the first snap.

The two on defense led to Illinois State first downs. Jake Kocorowski has covered University of Wisconsin football since 2013 and joined the Wisconsin State Journal team in May 2022. Fifth-year senior John Torchio perfectly read Illinois State quarterback Zack Annexstad on a third-and-7 from the UW 9, picking off a pass at the goal line and taking it 100 yards to the south end zone to nullify the Redbirds’ scoring opportunity. Fourth-year junior Graham Mertz finished 6 of 7 for only 59 yards, but all of his throws were on target. UW fans witnessed some spectacular snaps during the first half that included two 90-yard plus plays touchdowns. Here are three observations from the first half.

Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler is expected to be sidelined because ... (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

In addition to losing safety Hunter Wohler, the Badgers saw right tackle Riley Mahlman leave the game against Illinois State in the third quarter.

Trying to find the starting five is always a hard job for coaches. UW called a timeout with 9:39 left in the quarter but Mahlman stayed in the lineup for Braelon Allen’s 1-yard touchdown run on fourth and goal. “Hunter is a heck of a player," Herbig said. “I'm anxious to see kind of how everyone did but certainly Logan,” Chryst said. “Everyone knows we're going to need a lot of guys this season. “It was good to see Preston get in there and do that. Mahlman’s injury came on an evening when the Badgers' revamped offensive line had its first test. He was using crutches and in a protective boot after the game. But it is the game of football. Freshman Austin Brown and Titus Toler formed the third pair. With five starts and 27 games played, Torchio is by far UW’s most experienced safety. Latu recorded one tackle and broke up one pass; Zachman recorded two tackles and an interception.
