Michigan is coming off its best season of the Jim Harbaugh era, winning the Big Ten title for the first time since 2003. “They are both the kind of guys that don’t flinch, fold, or quit at the slightest whiff of adverse circumstances or something that doesn’t go their way. Colorado State: For the Rams, it was never a debate who would start at quarterback against Michigan. local time, the CSU football team buses rolled up the the Big House. The 2022 college football season is here for Colorado State. It's 7-0 Michigan with 9:49 left in the first quarter. It was a long drive, going 71 yards in 6:48 but the Rams have twice held Michigan to field goals in the red zone. There are tons of Rams around, too, with more than 1,000 CSU fans expected in one of the largest away followings ever for CSU. He grabbed his first sack with a super speed rush in the second quarter to sack McNamara and force a punt. Michigan leads CSU 10-0 after the first quarter. For the other, it's a way to ease into the season. Michigan has run 33 plays compared to 19 for CSU and time of possession is 15:55 to 8:40. Michigan is now up 30-0 early in the second half.

The sixth-ranked Wolverines got a complete game on defense. Their offense was a mixed bag.

McCarthy into the game, briefly, in the first half before giving him a larger role in the second. Perhaps more impressive, Michigan’s rushing success on the ground came down a pair of key pieces along the offensive line. He nearly had a pass intercepted in the first quarter when tight end Erick All tripped on a play near the end zone. In fact, Michigan’s best-looking first-half drive was a seven-play touchdown drive comprised of all rushing plays. McNamara struggled to get into a rhythm early, missing Cornelius Johnson on a pair of incomplete passes on the first drive. Quarterback Cade McNamara was unimpressive in his tryout to regain the starting job, completing 9 of his 18 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown.

J.J. McCarthy shines as backup QB in Michigan football's 51-7 ... (Detroit Free Press)

With the game no longer in doubt, J.J. McCarthy wowed Michigan football fans with a 20-yard TD run in the Wolverines' 51-7 win over Colorado State.

A speed rush from McGregor, whose physical traits (6-6, 261 pounds) have drawn comparisons to Aidan Hutchinson, forced Millen to climb the pocket and overthrow a pass that was intercepted by safety Rod Moore in the first quarter. Moore and Anoma combined to snuff out a drive in the second quarter with pressures on consecutive snaps. Little definitive will be gleaned about Michigan’s new crop of edge rushers over the next few weeks facing a trio of nonconference opponents who might combine for fewer wins than the Wolverines in 2022. Barnhart, who logged 262 snaps last season at left tackle (64), left guard (173) and right guard (25) was evaluated in the medical tent and reportedly cleared to return, according to the U-M radio broadcast. But the coaching staff appeared content to err on the side of caution, shifting Keegan to left tackle and using former four-star prospect Giovanni El-Hadi at left guard. New defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s unit overwhelmed a CSU offense led by a quarterback making the first start of his career in Clay Millen (16-for-20 for 137 yards with one TD and one interception) and a left tackle who had never played a snap. McCarthy](https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2022/09/03/michigan-football-colorado-state-three-questions-cade-mcnamara/65472009007/), which will be scrutinized daily between now and Sept. His rhetoric after being elected captain in a players-only vote was that of someone who assumed the honor secured his position. Instead, utility lineman Karsen Barnhart — a key backup at every position but center — was part of the first-string offensive line alongside left tackle Trevor Keegan. The final score — Michigan 51, Colorado State 7 — reflected an unflinching beating in what was a blowout at best and a laughingstock at worst. The Wolverines began four-for-four in the red zone under McNamara’s direction, but three of those scores were field goals from kicker Jake Moody. A crowd of more than 109,000 exulted when McCarthy juked defensive back Angel King in the open field and bounded into the end zone with ease.

Five takeaways: Michigan football defeats Colorado State (WolverinesWire)

The college football season is officially back in Ann Arbor. The No. 8 Michigan Wolverines hosted Colorado State, which is only the second contest ever ...

On Saturday, the duo combined for 140 yards on the ground, and each rushed for a touchdown. In the third quarter, his shining moment was when he pushed the center straight back and helped record a sack. Moody connected on all three of his field goal attempts and drilled all of the extra point attempts. But overall Johnson showed the potential that a five-star recruit possesses. But one thing that did remain great was the Michigan running attack. McNamara was sacked on that play and it forced Michigan to punt. McNamara ended up settling in around drive four of the first half, but it still feels a little unsettling that the timing between the incumbent receiver and receivers was off. He also had two tackles and a tackle-for-loss. The 6-foot-6 redshirt sophomore was a pass-rushing fiend on third downs. The maize and blue had 440 yards on offense compared to 219 yards that Colorado State had. He had one sack and a forced fumble. McCarthy came in and ran a 20-yard run for a touchdown.

Mike Morris and Junior Colson share their praises on the edge room that Michigan has. The Wolverines rotated eight edge defenders on Saturday.

And today he showed us what he can bring to our team and he showed us at practice as well but today he solidified what he could do for our defense.” And I feel like that fell on the coaches and the players because it’s like, I feel like people didn’t have faith in the coaches recruiting, and didn’t have faith in the coaches development of us and didn’t have faith in our development. He was strong in the weight room and doing his thing in the field. “I guess now I’m just excited for the defense you know we know there’s been a lot of talk about — we lost a lot of guys,” said Colson. If you look at the stat sheet he only had a quarterback hurry, but he was a menace for the Rams’ offensive line. He says that players come and go, but the coaches have done an excellent job recruiting and developing the room, so the Wolverines have multiple players that can get the job done. He said he was just happy for the defense with how well they played. “We have a, we have so many edges and so many different guys at d-line who can do great things for the football team,” said Morris. It’s paramount to give small breaks, and if there are so many players that can play winning football, then Michigan can always have players that are fresh out on the field. Going back to the loss of Hutchinson and Ojabo, the Wolverines lost, statistically, a ton of contribution. The Wolverines’ offense totaled 440 yards of total offense and rushed for 234 yards on the ground. Michigan had to replace three starters on the defensive line, but Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo were, arguably, the greatest edge duo in football last season.

The No. 6/8 Wolverines showed some of everything in their depth of quality as the 2021 College Football Playoff game brushed aside Colorado State in front ...

The reality of this game is that it was never likely to be a contest. For a Group of 5 program, that kind of money is important for the books. The bulk of our season is behind this game. The hope is that this will be a great learning experience. By late in the third quarter and into the fourth the game was over. But losing in such a lopsided way equally doesn’t show some terrible sign of bad things to come. This “buy game” netted a big $1.8 million pay day for CSU, a big number for a guarantee game. He fumbled and it was returned for a touchdown. It was like going from zero to 100 for the group. It's the first career TD for Millen. But the defense wore down and allowed some big plays as well. Further, Brian Crespo-Jaquez at left tackle was making his first career start and Jacob Gardner was playing his first game at the center spot.

I thought late in the game, their offensive line started leaning on us, and we got overpowered a couple of times in our line. And if we continue to do those things, we’re going to see improvement as we go through the year.” But for a guy playing in his first game, I thought he did a lot of good things, threw for 16-of-20.

Roundup: National media reactions to Michigan football Week 1 (WolverinesWire)

Cade McNamara started the game as Jim Harbaugh said he would, and he took nearly every snap with the Wolverines offense in the first half. He did not take ...

Michigan was up big by the time McNamara came out of [his designated start], but McNamara himself had underwhelmed. [the Michigan quarterback decision dilemma], the more convinced I am that Jim Harbaugh set this all up to make his case for choosing JJ McCarthy. 8 Michigan rolled past Colorado State, 51-7, with Cade McNamara finishing 9-for-18 with 136 yards and one touchdown in the win. He completed just nine of 18 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown — stats padded by yards after the catch from [Roman Wilson]— and he was nearly picked off in the first quarter as well. Cade McNamara kicked off the weird, two-quarterback derby thing that triggered Jim Harbaugh to cite biblical verses earlier this week, but he wasn’t the star. While McNamara threw for 136 yards and a score in the Wolverines’ easy 51-7 win against the Rams, McCarthy managed to steal the show by completing all four of his attempts for 30 yards with another 50 yards on the ground, including a 20-yard touchdown run. He completed all four of his pass attempts for 30 yards, and also rushed for 50 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run. McCarthy would draw the starting assignment next week against Hawaii. In comparison, McNamara completed only nine of his 18 passes for 136 yards, but did have a nice 61-yard touchdown pass to Roman Wilson. The maize and blue got no mention in a couple national publications’ feature articles, including ESPN and Sporting News. For instance, though Ohio State beat Notre Dame and is often included as ‘winners’ in various ‘winners and losers’ columns on Sunday, the Buckeyes are falling in most top 10 rankings coming out of the game. But five big ones did mention the Wolverines.

The redshirt junior, who made his first-career start at left tackle, left the game early due to an ankle injury. And though the Wolverines had two starters out due to injury ahead of the game, Michigan's head coach felt like that goal was accomplished as well. Michigan football stock watch: DJ Turner up, Taylor Upshaw down (Detroit Free Press)

Free Press sports writer Michael Cohen looks at players who helped or hurt their stock Saturday at Michigan Stadium.

He finished with the lowest run-blocking grade and lowest pass-blocking grade of any offensive lineman while also allowing a team-high three pressures, tied with right tackle Trent Jones, who gave up the lone sack on the day. He struggled with accuracy on short and intermediate passes and was saved from throwing just the seventh interception of his career when the ball slipped through a defender's arms. [McNamara’s deflated tone and dejected body language in a postgame news conference](https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2022/09/04/michigan-football-cade-mcnamara-quarterback-race-colorado-state/65472221007/) matched what he must have known was an underwhelming effort. That Moore and the coaching staff stuck with a struggling Keegan at left tackle over any of the true tackles on the roster reflects poorly on Michigan’s depth. Little of that translated to the field against Colorado State as McNamara completed just nine of 18 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown in what was best described as an uneven performance. The offense averaged 3.75 points per possession with McNamara on the field, but three of the four trips to the red zone failed to produce a touchdown. Anoma was credited with three quarterback pressures on three pass-rushing attempts to equal the outputs of fellow defensive linemen Braiden McGregor, Kris Jenkins and Mike Morris, according to PFF. The only pass thrown in Turner’s direction was a quick screen that he eradicated by barreling through the blocker and burying the wideout for a 3-yard loss. A true freshman from Columbia, South Carolina, where he was rated the No. He earned a sack on the first snap of his Michigan career by beating a double team. The only player with more pressures was edge rusher Jaylen Harrell. Turner also made the most impressive defensive play of the game when he scooped up a fumble in the middle of the field and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, shoving aside a would-be tackler en route to the end zone.

Look, it’s been a while since Indiana won at all, so coach Tom Allen has kinda forgotten how to just say, “Scoreboard, baby!” Instead, he went with this Friday night: “The bottom line, last time I checked, is we got more points than they did.” We won’t be ranking the Bruins and Trojans every week, but we should point out the Brue-Crew’s strong step toward Big Ten-ification in their opener — UCLA trailed perennial MAC doormat BGSU 17-7 in the second quarter Saturday before scoring the final 38 points. 29, let’s run through the misery index, from least miserable to most in this two-game week: For what it’s worth, he isn’t even the only coach with a biblical inspiration — or a two-QB system. Michigan Football: The good, bad, and ugly against Colorado State (GBMWolverine)

They forced turnovers; notably an interception by Sophomore Rod Moore that went for 37 yards as well as a fumble recovery on a 4th down by DJ Turner that went ...

They must keep this up throughout every game so they can compete with the elite teams later on in the season. They put pressure on the quarterback with seven sacks, totaling a loss of 50 yards. The Rams were scoreless until the 8:59 mark in the 4th quarter when they went 75 yards down the field to score a touchdown.

Performance Analysis, Snap Counts, Trends: Michigan vs. Colorado ... (Wolverine Maven)

Michigan pounded Colorado State for four quarters and several players did some really nice things in the process.

Moten was phenomenal as a pass rusher on blitz calls and as a tackler, but struggled in coverage. Kolesar is obviously down the depth chart a bit but he did record 15 snaps in the game against Colorado State. Johnson played 29 snaps and finished with two catches for 19 yards. Atteberry played 15 snaps at center — eight run play and seven pass plays. Moore was phenomenal as a tackler and in coverage and obviously recorded Michigan's lone interception. That resulted in Keegan bumping out to LT, which obviously didn't go very well. Not only did he put his athleticism and pass rushing abilities on display, he played with a very high motor all afternoon. *JJ McCarthy was actually the highest-graded player on offense but he played just 11 snaps. The sophomore linebacker led the team with 10 tackles including five impressive solo stops. Billed more as a mauling run blocker, Oluwatimi was extremely solid on pass blocking plays. The Wolverines got it done on the ground, through the air, on defense and in the kicking game. He was efficient as a runner despite never really popping for a long gain.
