South Dakota State vs. Iowa Picks, Odds: The Bet to Make for Week ... (The Action Network)

Find college football odds, betting picks and predictions for South Dakota State vs. Iowa on Saturday, September 3.

That will serve as a cautionary tale for the coaching staff and players that these elite FCS teams cannot be taken lightly. In 2016, FCS team North Dakota State came into Kinnick and upset the then No. Being able to hang in a Big Ten shootout will be important with Ohio State and Michigan on the schedule this year. The Hawkeyes’ running game will play second fiddle behind what will be an improved offensive line. Up front, Iowa returns three starters on the defensive line and seven of its top eight from last year. The backfield will feature a duo of Williams’ replacing Tyler Goodson, who has moved on to the NFL. The Hawkeyes will return all three starting linebackers from last year’s bruising squad. The South Dakota State defensive line returns its two-leading sack talliers in seniors Reece Winkelman and Caleb Sanders. Iowa played the same Colorado State team just a few weeks later and won, 24-14. The Havoc-inducing Jackrabbit defense led all of FCS last season with 21 interceptions. The Hawkeyes look to pick up where they left off last season, earning votes that kept them just outside the preseason AP Top 25. It’s been the best for them,” Williams said. It’s no secret that the Iowa wide receiving corps has been depleted. It’s going to be his first time out there really playing and I’m really excited for him. Just excited to see what he can do when the bullets are really flying. It does present an opportunity for a pair of walk-on receivers in Alec Wick and Jack Johnson to potentially star in the opener against the Jackrabbits. Not doing the Redhawks an favors, and Southeast Missouri State punts this one away again.] [14:53/Q2 — Iowa State extends its lead early in the second quarter] [On the first play of the second quarter, Dekkers completed a 33-yard pass to Hutchinson, who fell into the end zone to give the Cyclones a two-touchdown lead.] [End of 1st quarter — Iowa State 7, Southeast Missouri State 0] [Iowa State's true freshman running back Cartevious Norton made an appearance at the end of the first quarter, and ran the ball on back-to-back plays for ten total yards. Southeast Missouri took a delay of game penalty, and Jaylin Noel calls for a fair catch at the 25-yard line.] [2:29/Q1 — Dekkers finds Hutchinson for the early lead] [After the turnover on fourth down, Iowa State fans got their first glimpse of Hunter Dekkers as the Cyclones starting quarterback, and he did not disappoint. Iowa State still leads, 21-7.] [2:50/Q2 — Tyler Perkins kicks 50 yards on his first punt] [After scoring three touchdowns on its first three drives of the game, penalties and a strong Southeast Missouri defense forced Iowa State to punt. The Redhawks missed, and remain scoreless against Iowa State.] [7:54/Q2 — Iowa State up by three touchdowns] [Hunter Dekkers to Xavier Hutchinson has been the biggest constant in this game, and that connection is the reason for the Cyclones' 21-0 lead over Southeast Missouri about halfway through the second quarter.] [7:58/Q2 — Darren Wilson forces Southeast Missouri to take first timeout] [At this point, it's clear that Hunter Dekkers is comfortable lining up behind center, and he has no shortage of options. He was 18-23 in the first half, and threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns – all to Xavier Hutchinson.] [Speaking of Hutchinson, he leads all Iowa State receivers at the half with 122 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 17.4 yards a reception. But Iowa State struggled toward the end of the second quarter, allowing Southeast Missouri State to put points on the board. Brock had just five rushing yards in the first half.] [11:39/Q3 — Cartevious Norton limps off] [True freshman running back Cartevious Norton was playing well in his first game with Iowa State, and had just picked up an 11-yard gain before he remained down on the sidelines and limped off.] [14:10/Q3 — Targeting call to start the second half] [Southeast Missouri's Bryce Norman was called to targetting and disqualified for the rest fo Saturday's contest, giving Iowa State possession at the 49-yard line.] [HALFTIME — Iowa State's offensive stats after first half] [Despite the interception, Hunter Dekkers is off to a hot start as Iowa State’s new leading man behind center. Cyclones still have the ball, and it's currently 2nd and 5 on the 37-yard line.] [2:08/Q3 — A game without replay?] [Earlier in this game, one of Southeast Missouri State's players was ejected for targeting, a call made with the help of replay. Jirehl Brock jumped out to a late start as the Cyclones starting running back, finishing with over 100 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Hawkeyes football: Introducing the complementary football scorecard (Black Heart Gold Pants)

Every week this season, we'll take a look at how the Iowa Hawkeyes are performing on the curve I set them!

I then identified tiers (described below) to each of the seasons. (Overall the group under .4 averaged a 34% winning percentage) Yet the razor’s edge Iowa operates on puts them in a position where the current trend is unsustainable as a path towards victory. Obviously, the metrics I’ve compiled show better teams (Win Percentage) have better statistics as they relate to complementary football. This is the crux of my frustration - while Iowa wins, they fail to execute on offense the identity they were most known for throughout the aughts: “Bullies of the Big Ten.” [post ahead of the season](https://go.redirectingat.com?id=66960X1516590&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheathletic.com%2F3503315%2F2022%2F08%2F12%2Fiowa-hawkeyes-offense-ferentz%2F&referrer=sbnation.com&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.blackheartgoldpants.com%2F2022%2F9%2F3%2F23332648%2Fintroducing-the-complementary-football-scorecard-iowa-hawkeyes-kirk-ferentz-brian-ferentz-bhgp) by Scott Dochterman. By the way, smarter people than I say that [third downs are bad](https://twitter.com/statsowar/status/1564616512291213323?s=20&t=jrDeFe1CkHkS27uoX74ibA) - which is true! In pulling the five-year dataset, I filtered to only Big Ten teams, which are represented by the 70 dots below. A stellar punt - but really is was poor fielding of the punt - reflipped the field. 33% - equal parts turnovers, time of possession, and offensive touchdowns: This is largely through the lens of “is Iowa’s offense helping the defense?” By limiting turnovers & holding onto the ball, it presumably keeps Iowa out of precarious positions in terms of field position and depth. If Iowa wins the game, enough was done on offense to justify the result. Week to week, this could result in some pretty wild variance but in aggregate it does the job.

On the flip side, the total for North Carolina at Appalachian State was just 56, a number both teams covered on their own. BC threw a pick on the next drive, and Rutgers turned the interception into 6 points -- the long way. By year's end, the ACC will have played nearly as many such games (64) in the playoff era as the Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC have combined (78). And sure enough, Brice hit [Kaedin Robinson](https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4873237/kaedin-robinson) for a 26-yard TD pass with 9 seconds remaining to give App State one last 2-point try to tie. The Hawkeyes won the game, the ultimate objective, but struggling against an FCS team won't inspire much confidence. After losing several starters to the draft, the Hawkeyes proved there won't be a major drop-off in 2022. Another positive Bruce play, an 11-yard run, set Iowa up for a potential touchdown inside South Dakota State's 10-yard line. What was most concerning was Petras missed several throws that fans expect a veteran to make, a handful could've gone for scoring and explosive plays. Ten of South Dakota State's possessions started at their own 20-yard line or worse, a product of a masterful performance by punter Tory Taylor. As a result, Iowa’s longest rush of the game clocked in at 11 yards. The offense was consistently booed by fans in the stands as the unit struggled to move efficiently. A unit that traditionally plays well for the Hawkeyes, Iowa did not consistently generate running lanes against the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State also finished the game with 33 yards rushing and under 2 yards per carry, a testament to Iowa’s defense dominating the trenches all game long. He led Iowa with 11 tackles in the season opener, the first double-digit performance for Campbell of 2022. Two of his punts were touchbacks, but he was by far a huge weapon for the Hawkeyes.
