Pep Guardiola’s men came back though and beat them 3-2 to win the Premier League by a point. Emi Martinez watches it safely out of play. Ilkay Gundogan spilts the Villa centre-backs, lunges at the ball and just misses it. 11 mins: Nice work from Bernardo Silva to shift the ball away from Tyrone Mings and lay it off to Rodri. Ollie Watkins is around but the ball falls to Gundogan and City boot it clear. Cash does well initially to keep Foden in check and Douglas Luiz takes the ball of the City man. He gives it back to Cash whose clearance is poor and comes straight to De Bruyne. City recover the ball through Foden who guides it inside. [Pep Guardiola’s](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/pep-guardiola) Man City this evening. The physios are checking him over but there’s been a lenghty break in play here. Manchester City and the prolific Erling Haaland face Aston Villa at Villa Park in their latest Premier League match.

— Subscribers can stream via either the SkyGo app or the Sky Sports website. Douglas Luiz came off the bench to briefly pull Villa level at Arsenal and remains at Villa Park despite the Gunners' deadline day interest in him. We know we can hurt this team, and I'm really looking forward to the game," Steven Gerrard said at his pre-match news conference. When Philippe Coutinho put Villa 2-0 up at the Etihad Stadium on the final day of last season, it looked like Pep Guardiola's side were about to surrender their title to Liverpool. Erling Haaland's hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest mean he has nine goals in his first five Premier League games — a competition record. They're both on the bench. The answer today is neither. Manuel Akanji, who signed from Borussia Dortmund this week, is absent due to the birth of his baby son. 10 mins from kickoff: We won't get to see City's latest arrival today. Even the most laid-back goalkeeper in the Premier League has to tune in a bit. Haaland drops in and acts as a massive wall in a wall pass with Silva.

Manchester City brings its red-hot attack into Villa Park to meet under fire Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa at 12:30pm ET Saturday.

City had all of the game’s big chances but Villa only let one go over its line and Bailey buried his 3/4 chance (It was more than a 1/2 chance but certainly not a promise). Everyone understands we were in a tough situation but he just wanted us to bring the best version of ourselves on the pitch and we did that today.” The hosts have looked vulnerable against most teams but Tyrone Mings played well against Arsenal and Ollie Watkins is proving a relentless attacker. Sometimes you’ve got to take a little bit of technical, the nice bits of your team away, to put in some real blood and thunder. But we were just not precise enough in the crosses, we missed a few situations and that’s why we could not score. We were not precise in our final third touches and our simple things, especially in the first half. “A lot of credit to [Steven] Gerrard because going into a big important game he didn’t let anyone feel pressure and that was important for the team. City had 73 percent of the ball and took 13 of the game’s 16 shots but Villa stayed tight. “Listen I’ve had to tweak a few things and look at myself behind the scenes. There were a lot fewer of the latter on Saturday, as Emiliano Martinez and Tyrone Mings kept the defending unit as compact as possible and ready to counter attack. City had all four of the game’s “big chances” but only scored once. Villa shows well: The goal came out of nothing, and so, in a sense, did the performance.

Is Aston Villa vs Man City on TV? Channel, live stream, team news ... (The Sun)

MANCHESTER CITY take on struggling Aston Villa TONIGHT, with Erling Haaland desperate to keep his impeccable scoring record going. The mega summer sign.

And they deserved credit for pushing for a winner near the end and for a few moments, making City look a bit ordinary. Equally, this was a decent game for under-pressure Villa boss Gerrard whose team were organised in the first half and unlucky to find themselves a goal down. In the first 22 minutes, before a water break, Bailey had touched the ball just once but this was a moment of class. He punched at the air in front of the ecstatic City fans and there will be plenty of more of those this season. Villa thought they had scored a winner when Coutinho curled a shot into the top corner, via the inside of the woodwork from 25 yards out. Jacob Ramsey kept the ball away from Rodri and sub Riyad Mahrez and his low pass was met with a fabulous first-time strike by Bailey from around the penalty spot. De Bruyne struck a free-kick against the bar and then should have done much better with another effort from a good area. Villa had an attack when Watkins burst into the area but Ederson timed his block to perfection, otherwise it would have been a penalty. Haaland spent the first half trotting around in the spaces between Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings looking a little lost. [Villa](https://www.the-sun.com/sport/football/team/604/aston-villa/) sorted themselves out to deliver a result which was massive for under-fire [Steven Gerrard](https://www.the-sun.com/who/steven-gerrard/). [Haaland](https://www.the-sun.com/who/erling-haaland/), having given his team the lead with their first proper attack of the game, missed two chances he would have expected to score and remarkably, three guaranteed points turned into one. Yet Guardiola will still be happy with this start to the season even though they looked a bit ragged at the end against their pumped-up, much improved opponents.
