The Braves' rookie tandem of Spencer Strider and Michael Harris II deserve to win the NL Rookie of the Year award. Why not give it to both?
On the other side of the ball is Michael Harris II, the Braves’ rookie center fielder. His power at the plate has come in clutch for the team in crucial moments. The NL saw their last double winners of the award in 1976. There’s precedent for this, too: the last co-winners of the ROY award was in 1979. However, there’s always the possibility of both of them as co-Rookie of the Year winners in the National League. A big reason for the Braves’ success comes from a pair of outstanding rookies they brought in this season.

Strider overpowered the Rockies in his most impressive performance as a big-leaguer, racking up 16 punchouts and 22 swinging strikes. The strikeout total ...
As icing on the cake, he appears to be getting stronger as the season winds down -- over his past four starts, the rookie right-hander has gone 3-0 while registering a 1.08 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 36:4 K:BB over 25 frames. The strikeout total established the Atlanta-era franchise record, surpassing the 15 K's recorded by John Smoltz in both 1992 and 2005. Strider has posted five double-digit strikeout performances across 17 starts this season and ranks ninth in the league with 176 punchouts despite hurling only 114.2 innings.
Former Clemson pitcher passes Braves legend and Hall of Famer John Smoltz for most strikeouts in a single game.
Want to join in on the discussion? It was the most strikeouts by a pitcher in MLB since Walker Buehler had 16 in 2019. Strider was a fourth-round draft pick by the Braves after a short career at Clemson. "It's pretty wild, the guys who've thrown in this organization," Strider said. Only Warren Spahn, another Hall of Famer, has more strikeouts in the history of the organization. Strider passed Hall of Famer John Smoltz, who had 15 strikeouts in 1992 and again in 2005.
Greg Maddux made 355 major-league starts, 188 of them as a Brave. Only once – on May 2, 2001, against Montreal – did he manage a game score better tha.
On Thursday night at Truist Park, Spencer Strider became the king of the single-game strikeouts for the Atlanta Braves. Here's what he had to say.
“And when you can do that at 100 [mph, as Strider hit that on three pitches on Thursday], it makes everything so much better.” “When you get that first strike, hitters have a harder chance to win the at-bat,” d’Arnaud said. “What I saw was his fastball command was excellent today, and it was on both sides [of the plate] and in and out and up and down,” d’Arnaud said.
Strider was simply outstanding, producing one of the best performances of the season and setting a franchise record with 16 punchouts while holding the ...

Keibert Ruiz pulled the Nationals within 5–4 with an RBI single in the 10th. Chris Bassitt (12–7) threw six innings of two-run ball for the win, and Adam Ottavino fired a hitless ninth for his third save. Chris Martin (4–1) took the defeat in relief. Oakland prospect Ken Waldichuk, 24, picked up a no-decision in his major league debut. Five Boston batters had multiple hits, including Alex Verdugo, who went 3–for–4 with a home run and three runs. He hadn’t recorded a victory since July 5. Austin Riley went deep for the second consecutive game, giving him 33, and Michael Harris II hit his 14th, his first since Aug. Lane Thomas walked and Meneses, a 30-year-old rookie off to a torrid start in the majors, hit a 2–2 pitch from Norge Ruiz (0–1) to right-center to give Washington the series win. He allowed two hits and did not walk a batter. Tigers starter Eduardo Rodriguez (3–4) gave up six runs (five earned) and six hits in four innings. The Braves hit two homers for the second straight night. Gilbert (11–5) ended a streak of nine winless starts while holding the Tigers to two hits and recording nine strikeouts.

[Kyle Bradish](https://www.fantasyalarm.com/mlb/players/106168/Kyle-Bradish) became the first starter in Orioles history to record consecutive scoreless outings of at least seven innings and two or fewer hits allowed, and these two games were not against cellar dwellers- they came against the mighty Astros and the first-place Guardians. Expect Peraza to make his MLB debut tomorrow night at Tropicana Field as New York begins what is now an important weekend series with the Rays, who have cut the Yankees once huge AL East lead down to six games. It is easy to understand why the top two teams in the National League were the center of attention this week and there are all kinds of reasons to realize the Mets and Dodgers will meet again in the NLCS at some point next month. The Dodgers are a great team and have the best record in baseball, but the Mets are just as good and after taking two of three at Citi Field, including a 5-3 win yesterday to clinch their season series, it looks like there is a good chance that they will meet again in October. [Spencer Strider](https://www.fantasyalarm.com/mlb/players/107458/Spencer-Strider)’s extraordinary rookie season continued last night, as the right-hander rewrote Braves record books for the most strikeouts in a single game. Who will ultimately be named the National League Rookie of the Year? It might be a matter of opinion at this point, given that we still have a.
Not only did Strider strengthen his case to win the Rookie of the Year Award, but he also made a strong case to potentially be the Game 1 starter for the Braves in the postseason. Facing a rotation that features him and Fried at the top will be no easy task for whoever the Braves take on first in the postseason. He has burst onto the scene and given the Braves yet another ace in their starting rotation to go along with Not many rookies can say that they struck out 16 batters in a game and set a franchise record in the process, but Strider can. Strider is going to get some strong consideration for the NL Rookie of the Year Award at the very least. [Atlanta Braves](https://www.thecoldwire.com/sports/mlb/atlanta-braves) starter [Spencer Strider](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/stridsp01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) strengthened his case to win the award.
Atlanta Braves rookie pitcher Spencer Strider has been incredible this season, but he left even his teammates in awe Thursday night.
With the win, Strider improved to 9-4 with a sparkling 2.67 ERA with a strong 0.98 WHIP. Despite losing Freddie Freeman to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason, the Braves are significantly better this season. The Atlanta Braves are looking to become the first team since the New York Yankees in the late 1990’s to win back-to-back World Series titles.
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider broke John Smoltz's franchise record for most strikeouts in a game. Watch every single one of them now.
[While Strider is my totally biased pick for the next pitcher to throw a perfect game](https://fansided.com/2022/08/14/predicting-next-mlb-pitcher-throw-perfect-game/), even he believes he can do the impossible. At 23-years-old, Strider seems to have mastered the mechanics of being a power pitcher with precession. What has made Strider borderline unhittable at times are his combination of 100-plus heat coming from a lower release point than most hitters are accustomed to seeing, as well as the hard bite on his late-breaking slider.
Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider had a record-breaking outing against Colorado on Thursday. Has he taken the lead in the NL Rookie of the Year race?
If I had to put money on it, I would say Strider has the edge to win the award because of his impressive pitching stats so far. A big key to his success is his use of the slider. Regardless of who wins, however, Braves fans should feel excited about the future of this organization. [Michael Harris II](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harrimi04.shtml). Since then, he has etched his spot in this rotation for the next few years. He is also second in wins and innings pitched, with nine and 114.2 respectively.
Spencer Strider's record-breaking performance for the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night leaves little doubt about the National League Rookie of the Year.
Strider’s rise has been a meteoric and remarkable one after missing the entire 2019 season at Clemson due to Tommy John surgery. The fastball gets the attention, especially when it hits triple digits and Strider has dominated with it to a tune of a -17 run value or -1.3 run value per 100 four-seamers. Yet, the devastating slider has been almost as good, with a -1.2 run value per 100 pitches. Left off the Braves postseason roster and run to a World Championship in 2021, Strider began 2022 in the bullpen, making 11 appearances before moving into the starting rotation at the end of May. If there was any doubt about the winner of the National League Rookie of the Year for 2022, Spencer Strider shut them down Thursday night with a dominant, record-breaking outing for the Atlanta Braves against the Colorado Rockies.
