For hundreds of NFL players, Tuesday marked the end of the line as teams cut down their rosters from 80 players to 53 ahead of the regular season.
He has appeared in 28 contests over his first two seasons in the NFL. He played two seasons in Buffalo and spent two years with the Las Vegas Raiders before joining the Bears. He started 41 games for the franchise over his first three seasons out of the University of Florida. Howard was a first-round draft pick in 2017 out of the University of Alabama. The Bills have decided to cut Johnson after the team signed the veteran running back in March. The 49ers have interest in signing Snead to their practice squad, a person close to the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The veteran wide receiver, of course, exploded onto the scene in 2013 when he had 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns as a second-year player. Indianapolis had signed Lindsay [to a one-year deal](https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2022/05/17/colts-sign-former-pro-bowler-phillip-lindsay-behind-jonathan-taylor/9809763002/) in May but he had struggled to find a footing in Indianapolis, carrying the ball 16 times in the preseason for only 55 yards. He was competing for a backup defensive back job with the Bucs. He was drafted in the second round in the 2013 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. He joined the Dolphins as a backup the following year. He had a career-best 1,091 rushing yards in 2019, but suffered an Achilles injury the next season.

A lot of contenders lack depth at running back right now, and just like he did for the Rams I expect a team will find a use for Michel. It’s clear he didn’t fit the system the team was building offensively, and Mond struggled this preseason out of a promising performance against the Raiders. A team will look at him for potential tight end depth, but there are a lot of young players around the league at the position. In the end, the team felt comfortable enough with rookie Quintin Morris to move on and save a little cap space, rather than hold the veteran. Some players will find a second life on practice squads, or late signings before the season starts — but for most this will be the last they’ll be a part of an NFL team. It’s a grim day in the NFL for dozens of players.

Should they fail to do so, then it shouldn’t be surprising that they’re on this list. - Eagles release Anthony Harris: After acquire Gardner-Johnson, the Eagles cut Harris. If a player is drafted highly at your position, that means you need to show out in training camp.

They will likely have to add to that number to successfully operate during the regular season and account for in-season expenses. tl:dr The Patriots and other teams — by using the methods explained above — will have to bring their active rosters under the 53-player threshold mandated by the league. In order not to get lost amidst all the action, please make sure to bookmark and regularly visit our ET on Wednesday to put waiver claims in to acquire non-vested players to potentially fill any holes on their team. ET to sign those players to their 53-man rosters — meaning that spots on the active team need to be open or created for those players. New England is traditionally among the teams to announce transactions way past the deadline despite obviously already having parted ways with the necessary number of players. [New England Patriots](https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/new-england-patriots) and other 31 teams in the league will have to reduce their current rosters from 80 down to 53 players by 4 p.m. Based on years past, the expectation is that other players will join them before Tuesday’s cutdown deadline. Injured reserve is the most common one: players that have suffered an injury and will be out for an extended period of time can get sent there. After not making any moves on Monday, the Patriots still have a full complement of players on their active roster. The NFL tweaked its return roles a bit compared to the last two seasons. The Patriots are 21st in the waiver priority order.
Which notable veterans need to find new homes now that NFL rosters have been cut down to 53 players?
Hundreds of players will hit the free agency marketplace as September approaches to fill our Sundays with football once more. As a result, some veterans will see their careers come to an unceremonious end while many undrafted free agents will see theirs snuffed out before they could even begin. That’s the day all 32 teams have to slice their rosters down from 80 active players to 53.

Suggestions are that the Vikings will look to retain Mannion on their practice squad, pretty much leading to the end of Mond’s one-year tenure in Minneapolis. [ Justin Fields](https://sportsnaut.com/player/justin-fields/) a season ago would be an understatement. Harris might be the most-surprising of the NFL roster cuts that we saw on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that was not enough for Gordon to earn a spot on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster. One now has to wonder whether his career is over despite suggestions that the Chiefs might look to bring him back on the practice squad. [shocking trade for New Orleans Saints star Chauncey Gardner-Johnson](https://sportsnaut.com/chauncey-gardner-johnson-trade-philadelphia-eagles/) as NFL roster cuts were trickling out on Tuesday. It seems that Chicago’s brass didn’t view a veteran with a ton of experience (81 career starts) as a fit heading into the 2022 season. We can include the brass in Western New York in that group as he received $3 million guaranteed to sign with Buffalo. Corliss Waitman or another outside candidate will now be brought on to replace a player who ranked in the top five of the NFL in punting a season ago and set a Broncos all-time record for net punting in 2021.
With all 32 teams in the NFL making their final cuts to get their rosters down to 53 players, who are the most notable and surprise players released?
The team is choosing (for now) to roll with Dak Prescott alone given Ben DiNucci also was released. The rookie sixth-rounder had an opening with the J.K. 2 until Brett Rypien earned the job. Denver represented another short stint on his 22nd professional team, accounting for Johnson's combined stops in the NFL, UFL, XFL and AAC. 12 overall) has likely reached the end of the line after not cracking Kansas City's rotation. QB Josh Johnson (Broncos) The new-look passing game around Trevor Lawrence including Christian Kirk and Zay Jones doomed him. RB Duke Johnson (Bills) In the end, he was caught in the middle between those two fellow newcomers and young incumbents Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. Michel was a mild surprise, given he was thought to be solid veteran additional backup to free-agent addition Chase Edmonds, given oft-injured former 49er Raheem Mostert is the No. Leatherwood was the team's massively disappointing 2021 first-rounder. Howard (Bills)
As teams cut down rosters, we're tracking the most notable skill position players from each team who were released.
Patterson wasn’t exactly making waves, but he’s a solid depth piece who had familiarity with the team. With Dawson Knox and Tommy Sweeney, the Bills are good at tight end. Sanu was a longtime Falcons star and reliable receiver, but time has caught up with him at this point. Michel is a productive back who should stick in the league. He will find a roster spot on another team and could have some fantasy value if he can work his way into a starting role. Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith will continue to lead the way in New England.

– McFarland was the second best back on the team in the preseason and finally looked like he was healthy and getting things together in terms of his fit in the offense. However, some strong preseason performances and the ability to return punts and kicks weren’t enough for Miami to justify keeping him as the sixth wideout. It wouldn’t at all be surprising if he catches on somewhere and carves out a role for himself, but the Rams’ receiver room is crowded so there wasn’t much room to keep him around – even in only his second season. However, as the saying goes, “Sometimes the best ability is availability.” – – [Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire](https://lionswire.usatoday.com/) His confidence was clearly shaken after working with the second and third team for most of camp and it transferred over to the preseason games. Treadwell has had a hard time finding a home in the NFL, and though it is now clear that Duval County was just a stop along the way for him, he has an opportunity to give his next contract everything he has got in hopes of making good on his first-round pedigree. From key backup and spot starter to not making the team’s 53-man roster is surprising especially with the Browns not bringing in significant additions to the position this year. But even with Woods inking on to start alongside Jeremy Chinn, Burris was presumably in line for a key backup role behind the duo. – [ Matt Urben, Falcons Wire](http://falconswire.com/) [53-man roster](https://thefalconswire.usatoday.com/lists/atlanta-falcons-53-man-roster-2022-nfl-season/).

In order to be allowed to return during the season injured players must first be placed on a team’s 53-man regular season roster. Players with more than two accrued seasons will earn at least $15,400 per week with a maximum of $19,900. Once the waiver claim period ends, teams can begin to sign players to their practice squads. An accrued season requires a player to have full-play status for at least six regular-season games in a given season. Those with more than four accrued seasons are considered to be released and can sign with any team immediately. Teams have until noon ET on Wednesday to file a claim for any player released in the roster cuts from 80 to 53 players.
