On PFT Live earlier today, Mike Florio and Chris Simms broke down the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback battle between Mitch Trubisky and Kenny.
Florio freely admitted that Mike Tomlin isn’t going to care what the fans think, and while he is right that Pickett might be the more exciting option right now, it doesn’t matter if he’s not the best option right now. The fact of the matter is that if the team is winning games with Trubisky under center, not many people are going to be calling for Pickett to take over. Pickett looked the part of an NFL quarterback, so if Trubisky struggles through the first few weeks, the Steelers may turn to Pickett to see if he can be that guy.
The Steelers entered week 3 of the preseason without a decision at QB, but the answer is now clear. Here is how each QB played against Detroit.
Considering he is firmly the number three QB for Pittsburgh and the lack of quality backups around the league, it makes sense for the Steelers to shop him. He played very well early in camp and in the first two preseason games, going 26 of 36 for 220 yards and two touchdowns. If not, he will likely be inactive for games as the number three QB this season. That was one of the concerns about him coming out of Pittsburgh after he made a living out of making plays out of structure, so seeing him mostly win from the pocket was important. As soon as Pickett was selected with the Steelers 20th overall pick, questions about whether he could push Mitchell Trubisky for the starting job immediately ran wild. His performance against the Lions made it hard not to come to that decision.
Mitch Trubisky's two biggest fans were on-hand Sunday for the quarterback's dominant performance in the Steelers' preseason finale.
The Steelers open the season on Sunday, Sept. The 28-year-old Trubisky spent last season backing up Josh Allen on the Bills. Rookie Kenny Pickett, the team’s first-round selection out of Pittsburgh, threw for 90 yards on Sunday, completing 10 of 14 passes.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky finally got his turn in the two-minute drill and aced that test as well.
“The fact that they all played well is a good problem to have, certainly.” In addition to the long pass to Freiermuth in the two-minute drill, he also found Diontae Johnson down the left sideline for a 38-yard gain on the second possession. The two-minute drill and other pieces of situational football matter a lot to the Steelers. “Getting Mitch and that group and opportunity to execute two-minute was a major component, and so we got that.” I thought it was smooth, good communication, getting in and out of the huddle.” “We went right down the field and scored a touchdown.
Now that training camp is over with the Pittsburgh Steelers back in Pittsburgh and gearing up for what they hope will be a much more productive season,
But now that we are where we are, there is no sense in putting Trubisky on a short leash. Could there be any other choice for the topic of this series for today? Now the question is how long he’ll be the starter for before giving way to Kenny Pickett—and whether that comes this year or not.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin won't say who his starting quarterback is, if he knows. Mitch Trubisky knows he believes it should be him.
So it makes sense to let Trubisky get the season started, with rookie “I feel confident with where I’m at and our overall developing as an offense. “I feel confident with where I’m at,” Trubisky told reporters after Sunday’s preseason finale.
Head coach Mike Tomlin has yet to decide between veteran Mitch Trubisky and rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett for his Week 1 starter.
