LIV Golf: Mixed feelings outside Boston about Saudi-backed golf ... (usatoday.com)

Bolton is a town divided. Some residents support the upcoming LIV Golf tournament financially backed by Saudi Arabia. Others don't want it.

Meetings involving the town, LIV and The International started in March, according to Lowe. “It’s regrettable the town is being used to burnish bin Salman’s murderous regime. “I prefer the town do business with those that adhere more to basic, core American ideals, like freedom of expression,” Mahoney said. But residents are feeling much better on that point, Hodges said, because local police updated the Select Board this month on security plans. We’ve been tracking the fan experiences at each of LIV Golf’s previous tournaments and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, consistently showing that fans have been thrilled with the experience and eager to attend again in the future. That backer is Mohammad bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince and chairman of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The Saudi regime is also linked to violent crackdowns on dissidents, including the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. That includes golfers, volunteers and media, according to Lowe. He continued: “There’s a lot of hypocrisy in this country. I’m hoping it doesn’t bring a negative light on the town. LIV is financially backed by the government of Saudi Arabia. Mahoney put the number of people who donated the cash at more than 20.

They Said What? Ranking the Best Quotes From Another Wild Week ... (Sports Illustrated)

The PGA Tour's best will get richer, the PGA of America has a new home and Greg Norman still has chutzpah. Gary Van Sickle tracked what everyone said.

A LIV Golf statement in response to the PGA Tour’s dramatic changes is only one sentence long: “LIV Golf is clearly the best thing that’s ever happened to help the careers of professional golfers.” (You cannot be serious! [proposed Monday night golf venture known as TGL](https://www.si.com/golf/news/tiger-rory-to-play-in-monday-night-golf-matches-in-new-venture)—a televised virtual golf league—founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and proposed to start in 2024: “Rough terms, I see the terms ‘boatload’ and ‘truckload’ being thrown around a lot. Rory McIlroy gets to the heart of a long-time PGA Tour problem: “When I tune into a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, I expect to see Tom Brady throw a football. Actor George Clooney, spectating at the DP World Tour event Switzerland, is asked by a broadcaster if he would describe himself as a golfer: “Well, no one else I know would describe me as a golfer.” (Don’t be so hard on yourself, George, you’re a tremendous slouch. That is going to be a bit weird and it’s a little bit disappointing.” (No, what’s going to be weird is that we might go two weeks without a new lawsuit being filed, unless the rumor about a class-action suit against Norman for damaging the reputations of actual great white sharks is true.) PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan responds to a yet another question about whether LIV golfers will be able to rejoin the tour someday: “No. and Patrick Swayze’s ghost help some LIV Golf star find a loophole in his contract, spring him out of East Berlin over The Wall and bring him safely back to PGA Tour headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida? Everything of golf and for golf is going to be here. We talk about it as being the Silicon Valley of golf.” (Only without the insane taxes, laws banning gas-powered cars and that Zuckerberg geek who is probably actually a robot.) The changes were a strong reaction to the rival LIV Golf group that has lured several top players away with offers of millions upon millions of guaranteed money. The majority of LIV fields consist of has-beens and never-were’s. A lot happened in golf during the week that was.

Cam Smith still mum on LIV Golf decision (Sports Business Journal)

Cam Smith "declined to speak to reporters after completing the final round of the Tour Championship Sunday on the eve of his expected move to LIV Golf this ...

The "majority of LIV fields consist of has-beens and never-weres." Young said that he is "remaining with the tour, ostensibly thanks to the changes that came from the players-only meeting led by LIV’s "dream of having the best players on its tour died the moment the PGA Tour loyalists gathered in a meeting room" in Delaware last week. LIV is "exhibition golf, plain and simple." OTHER YOUNG GUNS STICK BY PGA TOUR: GOLF DIGEST's Joel Beall noted Cameron Young, who was runner up at the Open Championship, said that he is "staying with the PGA Tour." In addition to the PGA Tour, Niemann’s defection "would be a massive setback for Trevor Immelman, the captain of the Internationals team which is facing the US in the Presidents Cup in four weeks’ time" ( There was "little fan reaction to Smith joining LIV at the Tour Championship." He declined to speak to reporters "several times at the Tour Championship." In London, David Walsh wrote of LIV’s future, "I don’t see it being anything like what its masterminds wish it to be." The "capture of Niemann -- the highest-ranked player in the world aged under 25 -- will cause most raised eyebrows in the locker room because the Chilean was part of last week’s elite players meeting." Longtime PGA Tour player Cameron Tringale also announced on his Twitter yesterday he was not renewing his PGA Tour membership for next season and joining LIV (SBJ). It has been a "poorly kept secret for weeks, and Smith’s own words have not suggested anything other than leaving the

Bolton police end wedding campout as LIV Golf tournament ... (Worcester Telegram)

A "simple understanding." That is how The International golf club in Bolton explained its call to police.

Screening will include a metal detector, and no backpacks will be allowed at The International. The International has reached out to the Benoit family and we hope all will be resolved very soon.” That they were being forceful, and police shook the tents to wake people up,” Jennifer Benoit said. “The International enjoys strong relationships with its neighbors and this seems to be a simple misunderstanding. The group decided to leave voluntarily, without being asked to. Jennifer Benoit said she doesn’t buy it. “Police walked on our property, and did that to our wedding guests. When the Benoit family finally hosted family and friends, Jennifer Benoit said police put an early end to it because of a phone call from The International. Guests who attended the wedding celebration slept overnight in tents into Sunday morning. She believes the club’s call to police is “definitely” connected to the club’s concern about the risks of protestors. “Having no knowledge who was occupying the tents, they followed proper protocols and contacted local authorities. My husband, David, is livid.”

Cameron Young confirmed to reporters last week that despite being in discussions with LIV Golf, he will remain loyal to the PGA Tour.

“I kinda expected to win one. “I expected to play well and have chances to win tournaments,” Young said. There’s a lot of factors to it.” I think it wasn’t meant to be this hostile between the two.” Although Young did not earn a victory during his first season on Tour, he put together one of the most impressive rookie campaigns in recent memory, notching five runner-up finishes and earning over $6 million. “It’s a really difficult situation because it’s not anything that anyone really wanted to happen.
