Taylor Swift Has Saved the VMAs (The Cut)

Taylor Swift saved the MTV Video Music Awards in her bedazzled dress, accepting an award for “All Too Well” and giving an uninterrupted, Kanye-free speech.

From her rhinestone-adorned eye makeup, to her iconic red lip, even down to her silver, strappy shoes, she was a sight for very sore eyes. We have no choice but to thank her for both her emotional service in general, as well as her fashion service on this God forsaken night. I might venture to say she was the best dressed star on this carpet, which given the material we were served in this New Jersey venue, might not be saying much.

Taylor Swift has announced an all-new album coming this fall, 'Midnights,' her first collection of fresh material since 2020's 'Evermore.'

Earlier, at the close of the awards show, Swift said, “You guys, I’m just so proud of what we made, and I now that every second of this moment that we wouldn’t have been able to make this short film if it weren’t for you, the fans,” she said, accepting for “All Too Well (10-Minute Version).” “Because I wouldn’t be able to re-record my album [‘Red (Taylor’s Version),’ which included the winning song] if it weren’t for you. She started the project in order to regain ownership of her work, after music mogul Scooter Braun bought Swift’s former label in 2019 – and with it the master recordings of her back catalogue.

MTV can't decide who the VMAs are for, but Taylor Swift knows (The A.V. Club)

The awards insist on engineering a viral moment that just won't be for an audience they don't understand. Swift has a different strategy.

The VMAs may be holding to their last thread of relevance, but Swift’s buoyant multi-generational stan army and her command of social media prove the merit of an old-school celebrity with a streamlined publicity plan and media training. Swift was spotted [doing the same](https://twitter.com/PopCrave/status/1564060001987186691) at the conclusion of Nicki Minaj’s career-spanning medley, in an old-school pan-to-the-crowd clip that blew that entire “celebrities having fun together” airplane segment out of the water. While accepting the award that made her the most decorated Video of the Year winner of all time, she caused two good old-fashioned water-cooler moments MTV could only dream of. [absolutely bizarre appearance](https://www.avclub.com/johnny-depp-reportedly-appearing-at-vmas-1849451794) by a holographic Johnny Depp dressed as a Moon Man (although the accepted term is now Moon Person, believe you me: this was a Moon Man if ever one has existed.) Given Depp’s [current allegations](https://www.avclub.com/johnny-depp-amber-heard-what-did-we-learn-trial-verdict-1849005238), the trite moment took on a disgusting political undertone; essentially, MTV threw shit from TikTok at a wall to see what sticks, even if it’s a domestic-abuse-case-turned-fan-cam. Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson’s link-up with Jack Harlow for “First Class” was an event highlight, it’s telling that the show probably would’ve gained more traction if she had just performed “Glamorous” instead of contributing to Harlow’s middling interpolation of her hit, a snippet of which went viral all the way back in April. Historically, that subset was clear: the VMAs were for young people who cared about showbiz, the thin and thick of it, the high-brow to the low-brow. Back then, Swift was a brand-new country crossover artist who hadn’t even hit her third decade of life. Ironically enough, the true conversation starter at this year’s VMAs was the very same person it was in 2009: Taylor Swift. With the early Wild West of the Internet in the rearview mirror, getting online attention is now down to a science with little to no serendipity involved. The fanfare of nominations and the weight of an Oscar still stand, but one

(“Midnight” will presumably be harder to Just add “midnight” to the list of concepts that Swift can claim cultural ownership of, alongside red scarves, the month of August, not being able to come to the phone right now (why? In fact, “midnight” specifically has been mentioned on five of her nine albums so far, in some of her biggest singles. Not the things I hate… Or the things that haunt me in the middle of the night.” Given that she’s now releasing an entire album on the latter, this manifesto no longer rings precisely true. (For the Easter egg collectors, the Spotify animations not only highlight “midnight” lyrics, but also other consequential Swiftian nights from “I Almost Do,” “Treacherous,” “The Archer,” “my tears ricochet,” and “hoax.”) The concept album also slots in nicely with the ongoing [re-recording project](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwju55jNsuz5AhWYK1kFHdUSAqsQFnoECAkQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.avclub.com%2Fscooter-braun-refutes-taylors-version-of-master-recor-1847162252&usg=AOvVaw1Ugt2odcP9P4fig_M_vx1w): since the tracks are all about midnights “scattered throughout [her] life,” Swift can use this record to nod to her previous “eras,” for which there are a handful more records to re-sell (and plenty of merchandise to hawk). “This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams.

Everything We Know About Taylor Swift's 'Midnights' So Far (Billboard)

Taylor Swift announced her upcoming 10th studio album 'Midnights' during the 2022 MTV VMAs. Here's everything we know so far about it.

Midnights would be Swift’s 11th album to top the chart, which would put her in a tie for third place with Streisand, Bruce Springsteen and Drake for the most No. [Billboard 200](https://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200/) — and she’s already had 10 releases reach the peak position — she would tie Barbra Streisand for the most No. “The floors we pace and the demons we face. Customers will be able to purchase the record on CD, vinyl and cassette tape, with the first two options including thematically perfect “blue moonstone” marble-colored discs. A square photo of Swift wearing sparkly blue eye shadow and her trademark red lipstick, holding the flickering flame of a lighter close to her face, rests in the bottom right corner of the album’s artwork. It occupies maybe just over half of the full cover, bordered on the top and left side by minimalistic, off-white negative space. “I had made up my mind that if you were gonna be this generous, and give us this …” she began, holding up the award. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t – right this minute – about to make some fateful life-altering mistake.” She later confirmed the date in her Instagram post that night. Swift posted a short description of the album’s content on Instagram and, oh man. She also updated her website to match her fast-approaching new era, though it crashed almost immediately, likely due to the amount of traffic it received from Swifties eager for more information. “And I will tell you more at midnight,” she added pointedly.
