Tim Twentyman recaps the Detroit Lions' 19-9 preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Blough was 4-for-7 for 50 yards with a 79.5 rating. They allowed nine points on three field goals, but two of those field goals were set up from turnovers by the Lions – interception and turnover on downs – deep in Lions territory that set the Steelers' offense up at the 19 and 25 yard lines, respectfully. Safety DeShon Elliott (four tackles) and cornerback [Jeff Okudah](https://www.detroitlions.com/team/players-roster/jeff-okudah/) (two tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass defended) played well too. Blough finished the game playing in the second and fourth quarters and was 17-of-32 passing for 160 yards with a touchdown pass and a 77.6 passer rating. The starters on both sides of the ball for the Lions left the game with the Steelers leading 9-0. Starters: There was some good and some not so good in the first half of football Sunday in Pittsburgh with both the Lions and Steelers starters playing the first half.
This post will update with drive summaries, analysis, injury updates, photos and more throughout the game.
The Lions roll with the draw on third-and-17, which Jefferson takes for 27 yards and the first down. The Lions are rocking their white jerseys and silver pants. More flags down, though, but it’s offside on the Lions. The first-team offense remains on the field with Blough. Second-and-15 after the sack -- Boyle has another pass tipped and he’s lucky that one didn’t get picked. Trubisky gets the Steelers downfield with a pretty 22-yard pass for Pickens. Steelers 16, Lions 3 The Steelers take a timeout ahead of second-and-goal at Detroit’s 8-yard line -- Snell taken down behind the line by Austin Bryant. Well, here come the flags, so hold on -- roughing the passer. Reynolds looks like the best player on the field at the moment. The Steelers down to Detroit’s 35-yard line. He then finds Kennedy for a short gain, with less than a minute on the clock for third-and-2.
Drive-by-drive lives updates and highlights as the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers close out the 2022 preseason.
He led Detroit on a fairly solid drive, including this nifty pass to Igwebuike. The Steelers converted on a 54-yard field goal to push the score to 19-3 Steelers. Austin Seibert put the Lions on the board. Pickett continued to pick on the Lions reserve cornerbacks, moving the Steelers steadily down field between the 20s. Detroit opted to bring back Boyle for the next offensive drive, starting on his own 15-yard line. Detroit pulled most of their defensive starters for Pittsburgh’s next drive, keeping just Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez on the field. Blough scrambled for 7 yards on a third-and-8, giving the Lions an opportunity to go for it on fourth-and-1. On third-and-long, Boyle threw it right to Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton for the easy interception. But a couple of holding penalties on the Steelers caused them to stall in the red zone, and Pittsburgh settled for a 45-yard field goal attempt. Trubisky and the Steelers offense finally broke the stalemate on the next drive. The Lions defense quickly forced a three-and-out, thanks to a good combination of coverage and pass rush. But the Steelers stacked the box and stymied the Lions’ run game early, forcing a 5-yard loss and a third-and-3 draw play.

With 12:59 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Steelers got back on the board, hitting a 54-yard field goal. Meanwhile, Kazee was seen on the sideline wearing a sling on his left arm. From the 27-yard line, Chris Boswell scored the first points of the game, putting the Steelers up 3-0 with a 45-yard field goal. Six plays and 92 yards later, Trubisky found Steven Sims on a six-yard pass to make Pittsburgh's lead 16-0 at the half. That led to an exchange of three-and-outs by both teams before the Steelers offensive took over on their own 15-yard line. The two-point conversation failed, moving the score to 19-9. The Steelers opened the game with their starters and sent the defense out first - winning the coin toss and deferring until the second half. Detroit then drove 67 yards in eight plays before kicking a 36-yard field goal to make it 16-3. Watt, Diontae Johnson and Damontae Kazee all left with injuries. The Lions started off with a 15-yard grab by T.J. The Steelers' easy preseason win came with losses as T.J.
The star WR and pass rusher were quickly ruled out, but Mike Tomlin didn't sound too concerned.

When asked if he would call the move a dirty play, Daboll said he felt low blocks are simply part of the game. Johnson, 26, reportedly suffered a shoulder injury following a catch in the first quarter while the 27-year-old Watt exited late in the second with a knee injury. Watt headed for the locker room for an evaluation and was subsequently ruled out. It’s a tough block, but whatever the rules are, those are the rules.” Watt’s injury comes amid recent controversy regarding the NFL’s low block policy.

The Lions could be in the market for a backup quarterback this week. He also threw an interception directly to Pittsburgh cornerback Cam Sutton, who didn't even have to move as Boyle hit Sutton right between the 2 and the 0 on his jersey as he sat down in zone coverage. Hockenson seemed to apologize to Watt immediately after the play, and Watt remained in the game briefly before being pulled. Twice the Steelers started a series inside the Detroit 30 in the first half. Clarity will come at some point in the next few days, though Tomlin called the situation “a good problem” to have. Trubisky's final throw of a busy August was a 6-yard dart to Steven Sims that gave the Steelers a 16-point lead and likely erased any doubt as to who will run onto the field with the starting offense against the defending AFC North champion Bengals on Sept.

On the first offensive series of the game, Trubisky was sacked twice. If he had suffered a serious injury in a meaningless preseason game, Tomlin rightly would have been roasted for his decision to have him in the game. Watt had two tackles for loss on the first series (one did not count due to an offsides penalty) and Cam Heyward batted down two passes as the Steelers pitched a shutout in the first half. The defensive stars are ready for the season to start, and Mike Tomlin is lucky Watt’s knee injury is not serious. Let's take a look at the Steelers who are rising and falling as the preseason rolls on: • Miles Boykin had three catches for 41 yards, including a 29-yard catch along the sidelines after making a nice adjustment.
Pittsburgh used its preseason finale as a dress rehearsal, as the majority of the team's starters played in the first half. With stalwarts T.J. Watt, Cam ...
Cincinnati tormented Pittsburgh last season, outscoring the Steelers a combined 65-20 in their two matchups. Sims, who started his career with Washington, had a 38-yard run and a 38-yard return in Pittsburgh's preseason opener. Boyle, who had the unenviable task of facing the Steelers' first-team defense, went just 4 of 12 for 57 yards that included an interception to defensive back Cam Sutton that set up one of the Steelers' first half field goals. He averaged nearly six yards per carry while making a 32-yard catch that set up the Lions' first score. There were some promising things from some of the Lions young players. Both players showcased their talents before leaving the game. Watt and Diontae Johnson both left the game during the first half. As good as he's played, Pickett will likely spend Week 1 holding a clipboard, which is how the Steelers' last quarterback who was taken in the first round, Ben Roethlisberger, started his NFL career. 📱: Stream on NFL+ Pickett played almost the entire second half after Trubisky went 15 of 19 for 160 yards in the first half while playing with the first-team offense. The offense finally found its groove at the end of the first half, as Trubisky hit Steven Sims for a six-yard score. Pittsburgh used its preseason finale as a dress rehearsal, as the majority of the team's starters played in the first half.
The foot injury to Najee Harris is more serious than the team ever let on.
Harris didn’t run like a guy with an injury but this is worrisome as it could limit him early in the year. According to Harris, he’s dealing with a Lisfranc injury and is right at the four-week mark in his recovery. Harris carried the ball four times for 10 yards and seemed like a guy who has missed a lot of time.

Trubisky, however, appears to be part of the present.
One unknown entering the Steelers' 2022 preseason was how coach Mike Tomlin would approach the three-game setup that's new to them, though it was instituted ...
Thursday, Tomlin called it “difficult but not impossible” for a player added this late in the summer to make an impression, but Riley may have done that in the absence of Kazee. He had a pass breakup in the final minute and would’ve been credited with another if not for a facemask penalty on outside linebacker Hamilcar Rashed. A fourth-year player who started seven games last season for the Jets, Riley finished with four tackles, all in the second half. Claypool played last week against the Jaguars, but Austin, Watt, Adams, Highsmith and Allen didn’t see any action in the preseason. If the Steelers first carry Kazee on their initial 53-man roster, he will be eligible to return after missing a minimum of four games. He was then led to the medical tent and eventually the locker room for further evaluation. Veteran special teams ace Miles Killebrew did not play Sunday, missing all three exhibitions with a pectoral injury, and 2021 practice squadder Donovan Stiner was cut earlier this week for Elijah Riley, who was claimed off waivers from the Jets. That first blow to Watt had him moving gingerly, but it was another play on the next possession that sidelined him from there. I just think we should work towards player safety in regards to — because it’s a bang-bang play where a tight end goes up, then just goes straight for your knees, and he can get a running start at it.” While Johnson and Watt apparently avoided long-term setbacks, another player who was slated to be a key contributor did not. Now, we know: Tomlin wanted his starters, even the best of the best, to get some action prior to the real thing Sept. Tomlin acknowledged postgame neither appears to be seriously hurt and if it were the regular season, they may have returned.

Harris said it was a sprained linsfranc, an injury that typically takes four to six weeks to heal. Not many questions were answered, and the Steelers continue to look like a team that is going to struggle early on in 2022. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick together for the first time this preseason, and the first team defense did the job. The Steelers defense didn’t face starting quarterback Jared Goff, but they did a good job against the Lions backups, holding Detroit to scoreless in the first half while setting up the offense with two drives that started in field goal range. The biggest negative for this writer was the offense getting two drives back-to-back that started in enemy territory, one at the 19-yard line and the other the 25 and could not convert a single first down, and settled for field goals on both drives. When the line and quarterback were both playing well, the Steelers moved the ball and scored. The other two drives gained 150 yards and earned two scores.
It won't all be misdirection and razzle-dazzle in Year Two under offensive coordinator Matt Canada. "We're gonna be aggressive," quarterback Mitch Trubisky ...
"I've connected with Miles a ton on those kind of plays down the field. "He almost made a great one-handed grab," Turbisky assessed. "Pat's just a guy you trust," Trubisky maintained. Kazee seems to have suffered a serious arm injury during the preseason finale that could land him on IR to start the season. Sometimes, availability is all you need to make a roster, and lack thereof is all you need to miss it. The veterans special teams ability makes him an easy choice to fill the gap. Loudermilk is dealing with a rib injury that kept him out of the final preseason game. Moore and Okorafor are the expected starters with Haeg being a backup for a second year. The Steelers need/want him to return for Week 1 and be a significant contributor in the run game. With Green's struggles in the preseason, Pittsburgh could change their depth chart and move Leglue up to the second team. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are inching closer to their final roster for the 2022 season. The Steelers have a tight competition for their sixth wide receiver between Miles Boykin, Steven Sims and Tyler Vaughns. The Steelers don't have a trade suitor for Mason Rudolph which means they'll keep three quarterbacks.
Offensive lineman Kendrick Green is in danger of being cut along with some other former mid-round selections from recent draft classes.
Breakdown: The Steelers will pick up a fourth outside linebacker via a trade or the waiver wire unless they believe Hamilcar Rashed is ready to be on a roster. Joe Haeg, who has not played the past two weeks due to a concussion, has 40 career starts and could be kept to push for the starting job, as could Scott, who has 19 career starts. If Watt, who did not dress for any of the preseason games, can get healthy, he is a quality special teams player, and McFarland can be a call-up from the practice squad if there are injuries. He’ll be carried on the initial 53, but if he goes to IR, it could open up a spot for another receiver. Breakdown: Kevin Rader, who dressed for nine games last season, can be signed to the practice squad. Karl Joseph was lost early in camp and is on IR for the season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers might have a starting quarterback in mind, though head coach Mike Tomlin isn't going to reveal that anytime soon as the black and.
Pickett has plenty of experience coming out of college, but the NFL is a different world. The defense could surely help the transition to Pickett, keeping the Steelers in games while letting the rookie quarterback get his feet underneath him in regular season action, make some mistakes and really learn on the job. This is best-case scenario the Steelers could have hoped for all offseason. So now that the ship is already being led by the Steelers defense, allow Kenny Pickett to be your guy, just let ’em take over. Not only that, McCourty pointed out the fact that the Steelers start to the season (at Bengals, vs. And I just, I keep coming back to this: He is a coach who, I do what I want, and I answer to nobody. There’s never an easy opportunity for the Steelers to insert their prize rookie into the lineup. …I think Pickett has it, and I want to see him out there Week One.” Make no mistake about it though: Pickett looked solid in action on Sunday as well, finishing 10-of-14 for 90 yards, making a case for the starting job. There’s a lot of factors in play. He knows how the media, all that stuff. He knows how to be a number one.
Watt left Sunday's preseason finale with a knee injury sustained from a low block.
Thibodeaux injured his meniscus on the play and While Heyward acknowledged that the block from Lions tight end T.J. “We’ve done a lot for the offensive players.

Devin Bush: Bush was just one part of a Steelers second-team defense that was gashed by the Lions' run game but his poor reps were glaringly obvious. The undrafted running back turned linebacker needs to nail down the finer details of the scheme but his effort and power has kept him in the mix for a full-time roster spot. He made a key stop on 4th and 1 to give his team the ball back in the second quarter, but that highlight was overshadowed by some poor reps. After Diontae Johnson suffered a shoulder injury, Sims assumed his spot for the remainder of the first half. The Steelers left the field with three points but untimely infractions from the line cost them four points. Watt: The reigning Defensive Player of the Year was a menace during the game's opening drive. Minkah Fitzpatrick: The Steelers' star safety looked rested, not rusty, after he endured a relatively light training camp workload. PITTSBURGH -- In their third and final preseason game, the Pittsburgh Steelers held little back. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick spearheaded a suffocating defensive effort while the offensive line struggled for the third straight week.
Well, it now feels completely official that the ship has sailed on any sort of reunion with veteran cornerback Joe Haden and the Pittsburgh Steelers at.
At 33 years old, Haden’s play has declined quite a bit from the lofty level he was once at in his career with the Cleveland Browns and Steelers. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Steelers reached out to Haden to gauge interest, especially now. However, as the offseason progressed and concerns remained high regarding depth at the cornerback position behind starters Ahkello Witherspoon, Cameron Sutton and Levi Wallace, the Steelers showed some interest in Haden, who remains a free agent.

[Damontae Kazee](/nfl/players/1999512/damontae-kazee/) [View Profile](/nfl/players/1999512/damontae-kazee/) One player the Steelers may consider pursuing amid Kazee's injury is veteran safety and special teams ace [Rudy Ford](/nfl/players/2818349/rudy-ford/), who reportedly will be released by the [Jaguars](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/JAC/jacksonville-jaguars/) prior to Tuesday's deadline. The Steelers will have to find someone else to fit that role prior to their Week 1 matchup with the defending AFC Champion [Cincinnati Bengals](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/CIN/cincinnati-bengals/) on September 11. [NFL team](/nfl/teams) is required to cut their rosters from 80 to 53 players by 4 p.m. Kazee is expected to go on injured reserve after sustaining a wrist/arm injury that will require surgery, per the [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette](https://twitter.com/gerrydulac/status/1564076251848929280?s=20&t=AjfatQQYg92FqYLMvUKCQQ). The Steelers were not as fortunate as it relates to the injury safety [Damontae Kazee](/nfl/players/1999512/damontae-kazee/) sustained Sunday against the [Lions](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/DET/detroit-lions/).
