Does Watching College Football on TV Have to Be So Miserable? (The New York Times)

The corporations that control these broadcasts know: It can still be hugely lucrative to provide an experience that fans come to despise.

“It was everything you would imagine from middle of the country, a super-rivalry between states.” (I think he is right that a football game between Oklahoma and Nebraska would have been the exact conceptual opposite of 1970s New York City.) “That game doesn’t happen anymore because Nebraska chose to go to the Big Ten,” he said wistfully. He was open to the idea that my lengthy complaints about commercials and hot takes were evidence of “quality degradation,” that being one of the typical consequences for consumers of a monopolistic market. Kosner, the former ESPN executive, he recounted the stakes of a Thanksgiving 1971 game between Nebraska and Oklahoma that he remembered watching. [Facebook memos](https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/10/26/facebook-angry-emoji-algorithm/) made public in the fall of 2021 revealed that the company had been rewarding outside content that users reacted to with the “angry face” emoji with better placement in news feeds. I believe I embody the concept, as so defined by Marx, when I am watching five to eight consecutive commercials 16 times during a college football broadcast so that Disney shareholders and Rupert Murdoch might benefit. Reporting which preceded the Big Ten’s recent contract suggested that college administrators had themselves become uneasy with the amount of control that ESPN and Disney had over their sport. (“College football is on fast approach,” begins a recent post on one of those sites.) In 2020, it [secured exclusive future rights](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/10/sports/ncaafootball/sec-disney-deal.html) to broadcast the Southeastern Conference, whose teams are more successful on the field than the Big Ten’s and almost as popular. There were about 80,000 newsroom employees in the country combined between newspapers and the internet in 2008, according to Pew, and by 2020, that number fell to 49,000. “You’re making deals at the demand of these conferences and of the media companies you work for and it’s a competitive arena,” Mr. Big Ten games have been broadcast on ESPN and ABC for years, but the parties were unable to come to terms on a renewal of their relationship. I also spoke about the subject with John Kosner, a former ESPN executive who helped oversee college sports at the network in his 21 years at the company, owned by Disney, and now runs his own sports media business.

College football TV schedule: Nebraska-Northwestern kicks things ... (The Washington Post)

Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky, Duquesne, Nevada, Wyoming, Utah State and UNLV will travel to face the Rainbow Warriors this season, and all are playing Saturday.

Hawaii-Vanderbilt is about as “Week 0 Nightcap” as a game can get, especially considering it will be played at the Rainbow Warriors’ 9,300-seat practice field after Aloha Stadium was declared unusable after last season. But considering how bad Wyoming’s offense was last season — the Cowboys failed to reach 20 points in six games last season — that may be a blessing in disguise. But the Illini lost a whole lot of production from that team and are more or less starting from scratch. The Wildcats, meanwhile, posted a 3-9 record for the second time in three seasons, their season undone by a leaden offense (they had only 124 plays gain at least 10 yards, which ranked [124th out of 130 teams](http://cfbstats.com/2021/leader/national/team/offense/split01/category30/sort01.html)). College Football Is Now NFL Lite (New York Magazine)

College football, a sport once defined by regional charm, is awash in money and becoming more like the NFL every week.

In the long term, it may prove to be the opposite. But for real devotees, the changes augur alterations to the sport that may make it unrecognizable over the next decade. In the short term, this has proven to be a lucrative decision. [ESPN paid $5.64 billion](https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/espn-reaches-12-year-deal-to-air-college-football-playoffs/) for the Bowl Championship Series, essentially giving it the right to air three college football games a year for the next 13 years. The fears that college football is about to become little more than a duopoly with every non-SEC or Big Ten school left standing out in the cold That move was a response to the SEC bringing in Texas and Oklahoma for similar reasons. And they’re doing so at the total direction of the networks. In December 2020, ESPN [paid $3 billion to the SEC](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/10/sports/ncaafootball/sec-disney-deal.html) to move its games from CBS. The Big Ten, attempting to sweeten the pot on its rights deal, added UCLA and Southern California earlier this summer, two schools that make no geographic sense for the conference, but which do allow access to a swath of the country that wouldn’t otherwise be interested in its TV network. But for the most part, it has been a regional one, confined to large swaths of the South (here in Georgia, people care about the Bulldogs more than they ever will about the Falcons) as well as the upper Midwest and parts of California. [Seventy-five of the 100 most watched shows on television](https://sportsbusinessjournal.com/Journal/Issues/2022/01/10/Upfront/Ratings.aspx) last year were NFL games. College football Week 0 report card: At least Nebraska fans ... (USA TODAY)

Nebraska fans at Dublin's Aviva Stadium may have watched the Cornhuskers faceplant again, but they at least got some free beer.

Idaho State went 1-10 last season and UNLV, armed with the benefit of playing in Las Vegas and in an NFL stadium, only did the Bengals one better in the win column in 2021. Also, the wardrobe choice he chose to leave the house in does him no favors. In this case, it certainly applied to the slate of games fans had to choose from. Whoever came up with the title "Week 0" to signify the start of the college football season needs their head examined. Supposedly, SFA assistants were lurking in the shadows during Jacksonville’s Spring Game to get the lowdown on RichRod’s offensive schemes. The same thing goes as far as grading from last season: High marks will be only for the spectacular, and failing grades have no chance of being reversed.

It didn't matter that Nebraska overhauled its team through the transfer portal, brought in a new quarterback and up-tempo offensive coordinator Mark Whipple from Pittsburgh, the outcome was the same. Northwestern marched right down the field to score a touchdown, and the Huskers never recovered. According to the Hartford Courant, Mora expressed worry about starting quarterback Ta'Quan Roberson and receiver Keelan Marion, who were hurt in the first half. Why are there no Black college football head coaches in the SEC? (ESPN)

Nearly 20 years after Sylvester Croom became the SEC's first Black head football coach, the league has none for the second straight season.

As part of the NCMFC, a group of coaches is designated for the "Coalition Academy," a mentorship program that pairs influential athletic directors with minority coaches. "And even though it wasn't the SEC, that's why I was thrilled to see Mel Tucker get the contract he got at "There are a lot of Black coaches in that situation, where we're just not going to get the opportunity," said Buckley, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2019. "If Coach Bryant had lived long enough, I would have been the head coach at Alabama," Croom said. He was also Alabama's first Black assistant coach and the SEC's first Black defensive coordinator when he coached at LSU in 1990. Croom was a finalist for the Alabama head position in 2003 that ultimately went to Mike Shula. And yet, here we are in the hotbed of college football, and there are no Black head coaches in the SEC anymore." Offense is what sells and typically is what athletic directors are looking for when they're in the market for a head coach -- somebody with an offensive background and somebody who has called plays. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said he hears and feels Croom's frustration and that it is "troubling" the league is without a Black head football coach for a second straight season. That access I was given to Nick and his program is what put me on track to get the Maryland [head-coaching] job." "We've had success in adding diversity in other sports as well as some of our athletic directors' positions and at the president and chancellor level, but not in the head football coach position recently," Sankey said. And he doesn't need to be reminded that in 2022, for the second straight season, the SEC -- a league in which more than 60% of the players and 48% of the on-field coaches are Black -- won't have any Black head football coaches despite 10 jobs having come open in the past three years.

College football Week 0 winners and losers: Scott Frost-led ... (USA TODAY College)

Nebraska's 31-28 loss to Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland - like so many others during Scott Frost's tenure - hit all the same beats as a horror film.

[After losing 31-28 to Northwestern in the season opener](https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2022/08/27/northwestern-rallies-past-nebraska-31-28-in-opener-in-dublin/50648311/), Frost's record at Nebraska now stands at 15-30. Even when no longer in control of the offense — he handed those reins over to new coordinator Mark Whipple, who may update his résumé on the flight home — Frost still managed to upset the Cornhuskers' timing with the mindboggling onside kick; looking for the knockout punch, he instead delivered a potentially fatal blow to his security. At the very least, a 47-7 romp against overmatched Duquesne gets FSU to 1-0 for the first time since 2016. The Illini won five games in Bielema's debut, including a record nine-overtime victory against Penn State, but fell short of bowl eligibility in part due to a non-conference loss to Texas-San Antonio. In another trend among Big Ten teams in Nebraska's weight class, Fitzgerald managed the game to take advantage of the Cornhuskers' inevitable implosion. An oil spill, a bridge collapse, an industrial explosion, that old black-and-white video of two trains colliding — this is what has come to represent what was once one of the proudest programs in the Bowl Subdivision.
