Chicago Bears beat Cleveland Browns 21-20 (Akron Beacon Journal)

The Cleveland Browns fell to the Chicago Bears 21-10. Bears QB Justin Fields connected on three touchdown passes.

- Dec. - Oct. - Nov. Chicago Bears QB and former Ohio State Buckeye Justin Fields finds Ryan Griffin for a 22-yard TD pass. There's not been such interest in a kicker in Cleveland since Phil Dawson. Bears QB Justin Fields may remember that beating he took against the Browns last year - even if it is a preseason game. Could be Kevin Stefanski allowing kicker Cade York to get used to FirstEnergy Stadium, but he misses left on a 58-yard attempt. He would later connect on a 46-yarder. Yes, there is a reason for no update: with backups playing there isn't a lot of continuity or rhythm. Browns backup QB Joshua Dobbs finds TE Miller Forristall on a 6-yard pass. Thus no third quarter scoring. The two-point attempt fails.

Justin Fields went 14-for-16 for 156 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Chicago Bears' 21-20 win against the Cleveland Browns in the preseason finale.

Things will be fluid as the Bears monitor cuts from other teams and assess their own injury situations. Running back David Montgomery turned nine carries into 28 yards in the first half and had a 24-yard chunk play negated because of the holding penalty against Griffin. Running back Damontre Tuggle lost a fumble inside his 20-yard line that set the Browns up for their final touchdown. Kmet snagged the third touchdown pass of the night, left uncovered as Fields rolled right and found him for a 24-yard score. - Among the healthy Bears who didn’t play Saturday night were Roquan Smith, Eddie Jackson, Robert Quinn and Jaylon Johnson. That’s how efficient and dialed in Justin Fields and the Bears offense were in the first half of Saturday’s victory. But in the search for encouraging signs, Saturday offered several, particularly with the poise and command Fields demonstrated. But the pass protection was mostly sturdy on the three touchdown drives. As expected, the Bears started the game with an offensive line of left tackle Braxton Jones, left guard Cody Whitehair, center Sam Mustipher, right guard Teven Jenkins and right tackle Larry Borom. and the end-zone celebration was on. CLEVELAND — The Chicago Bears wrapped up their preseason Saturday evening, holding off a late rally to beat the Cleveland Browns 21-20 at FirstEnergy Stadium. With Fields at quarterback, the Bears ran 29 plays and scored 21 points.

Harris is a special teams ace, but showing his value on defense could go a long way to him earning one of the final spots. He's the Bears' most physically gifted offensive lineman, and his physicality and nasty should be an asset at guard. Elsewhere in the secondary, cornerback Davontae Harris recorded a pass breakup and made a first-down-saving tackle on second-and-6. He had excellent coverage on a third down throw to Anthony Schwartz to force a punt and later picked off Brissett. With only 27 snaps through two preseason games, Eberflus needed to let Fields and the first-team offense get significant work Saturday in Cleveland to gauge where the unit is at with the regular season two weeks away. Things were already trending in the right direction for Pettis, but the veteran receiver almost certainly locked up his spot.

3 Chicago Bears players that Cleveland Browns fans should watch (Factory Of Sadness)

The Cleveland Browns will meet the Chicago Bears in the final preseason game on Saturday and these are three names to keep an eye out for.

The hope is the new additions to the secondary, plus a defensive-minded coach, can help turn the Bears’ defense around. The Bears’ defense started with a short field and the opposing offenses never had to go far to score. The drama is over with Smith and he’s committed to playing for the Bears and proving his worth, which is good. Gordon and the Bears secondary are going to be a point of emphasis for any fandom watching. Originally, this was going to be both Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker, as they were the Bears’ first two picks, and both play in their remade secondary. [Because outside of](https://factoryofsadness.co/2022/08/26/aaron-donald-should-be-suspended-like-myles-garrett-but-the-two-situations-arent-the-same/) the New York Jets, I don’t think there is one franchise with as bleak of a future as the Bears.

Bears preseason: Roster risers and fallers after Browns game (NBC Sports Chicago)

Justin Fields and the Bears offense saved their best performance for last.

Then Sharpe suffered an injury of his own, and Pettis stepped in as the new “surprising” wide receiver. After the Bears’ first preseason game, Sharpe looked like a lock to win a job out of camp. With Tavon Young and Thomas Graham unable to get back onto the practice field, the Bears are left with Kindle Vildor to start at cornerback. With Byron Pringle, Velus Jones and Tajae Sharpe out with injuries, Pettis slid into the No. The entire offense showed out in the first half, but Pettis deserves some spotlight to himself. It was equally important to see Fields operate nearly perfectly, and to see Getsy call playsー like numerous play action bootlegsー to put him in the best position to succeed.

10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears completed an undefeated preseason for the first time since 1994, defeating the Cleveland Browns 21-20 at FirstEnergy ...

This is a challenging position to forecast because there are some unknowns after Johnson and Vildor as the starters on the outside and Gordon at nickel — and Vildor is going to have to be better than he was last season to keep his job. Excited enough to give him a spot on the 53? This is where Eberflus really wants to have depth and all you have to do is look at how he operated last season as the defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. Before the game, I thought Darrynton Evans was in a tough spot, but he was out there as a core special teamer — something that bodes well for him. Briggs played on the franchise tag in 2007, and he and the team reached an agreement that the Bears would not tag him a second straight time. “They wanted me back after the season (on a reserve/futures deal), and I had a long conversation with Saleh. They trusted me enough to be out there, and the second year was kind of a disappointment. Wide receiver Bernard Berrian also was a free agent in March 2008, and the Bears really wanted him back as a speed threat. Maybe a guy who spent the first 3 ½ weeks of training camp as a “hold in” didn’t want to strap on the pads to play in a game that will have zero impact on his contract negotiations at the end of the year. He’s getting $3 million guaranteed — and another $4.5 million kicks in if he’s on the field for 10% of the offensive snaps and the offense improves in one of six statistical categories. Defensive end Robert Quinn was allowed to sit out because he’s a veteran that doesn’t need to prove he can bend the edge and beat some of the best offensive tackles. That’s the equivalent of a full season for a starting receiver who is on the field for most snaps.

'Turning point' or tease? QB Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears ... (Chicago Tribune)

A first-half offensive outburst in a 21-20 Chicago Bears win provided valuable momentum for a still-jelling offense to carry into the regular season.

The exclamation point on the first half came on the strike to Kmet on a play-action rollout with the Bears featuring fullback Khari Blasingame, Griffin and Kmet and receiver Isaiah Coulter as possible targets. “Pretty much a one-on-one matchup,” Fields said. The receivers did a great job running the right routes at the right depths.” Added Fields: “Before the game, we know we’re going to run into adversity (at some point). What his teammates offered was the proper support through crisp execution and focused resilience to pump added belief into the Bears’ fuel tank. It’s also acceptable for those who want to wrap their arms around the positive energy that bubbled up and give those intoxicating emotions a big squeeze. [[Don’t miss] Column: Is the Chicago Bears offense as bad as the 0-16 Detroit Lions of 2008? Given a chance to use the preseason finale to gain experience and build confidence, Fields took full advantage of Saturday’s opportunity. The ride felt refreshing and somewhat exhilarating. After all, Fields and the first-unit offense found a groove in the first half at FirstEnergy Stadium. “The O-line did a great job protecting today. In a span of four possessions, Fields led scoring drives of 80, 52 and 62 yards, finishing each series with a touchdown pass to a different receiver.

but after flashing his eyes — and the ball — in the direction of those two options, he lofts a throw in the direction of Kmet, who is wide open for the score. This is a great design from the Bears, and Fields add a bit of a sales job along the way. Fields puts the ball on him to perfection, and the Bears are back in the end zone. On this play-action concept with a pair of deep curls to the right side, Fields comes out of the fake, hits his drop depth, and then uses two quick hitch steps to time up the route, before drilling in the outside curl to Equanimeous St. That gives Fields a window between the corner and the safety, which he targets to perfection: Fields was confident on the second drive, and you saw that on this connection with Dante Pettis on a Hank concept.

But he’s still getting up to speed on the field and missed nearly a month of practices. He also had a pass defensed in the endzone to save a touchdown. Brown #19 of the Chicago Bears looks on during the preseason game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Chicago Bears at Lumen Field on August 18, 2022 in Seattle, Washington. Sure, he’s been in the linebacker room studying and getting the calls down, but is his body in football shape yet? Now it showed up in a preseason game and it’s time to be at least a little concerned. But as he was going out of bounds, the ball popped out and thankfully was recovered by the Bears. Wide receiver Dante Pettis had himself a day on Saturday, catching three passes for 37 yards and a nice touchdown where he shook his defender in the end zone. No one is taking away what Pettis did on Saturday and he was a second-round pick in 2018 for a reason. Reports have indicated the Bears want to see Montgomery work in their system before committing to him with a contract extension. But over the course of three preseason games, we have seen things open up and more and more and the results have been promising. The Bears were without a few offensive weapons on Saturday, but they also had one of them make their preseason debut. Bears Shouldn't Go Overboard About 3-0 · 1. Browns JV · 2. Offensive Line Performance · 3. Teven Jenkins Rumors · 4. Eddie Jackson.

Smith had been on the field with the first team and actually doing team practices only for three days prior to the game. If they were planning to trade Jenkins for another player who is a guard and would start, then it wouldn't make sense for them to put Schofield with backups. The only tightness had to be the Bears being uptight about playing him on such short practice time. Showcasing is a term baseball uses when a losing team puts a batter in the starting lineup before the trade deadline to show other teams he has a pulse. A day-to-day with 14 days left until games that count is a concern, especially at starting free safety. Michael Schofield didn't stand out when he was in there and finished preseason playing with backups. Jaylon Johnson tightness was said to have been something from last week. On the other side, no one can point out they only faced Jacoby Brissett because that's Cleveland's decision to bring in a QB who is missing the first 11 games. He could have been showcased with backups and not been risking Fields' health. Then he spent the rest of the season sporadically getting onto the field and playing decent but not often enough. Now the line will take a different appearance as they bring back Lucas Patrick from his broken thumb. So they are going to risk Fields by putting a complete neophyte at starting guard just to "showcase" him?
