FXX's new adult animated comedy is a coming-of-age story about the Antichrist and two episodes in, it's a bit hit and miss.
Weirdly, the action is a high point of the series. [Rick and Morty really](https://gamerant.com/rick-and-morty-anime-series-adult-swim-hbo-max/) is the best comparison point, from aesthetic to comedic style, it feels like it was made for fans of Adult Swim. Hopefully, over the upcoming four episodes, the show will find its legs and put the strengths of its concept on-screen. It's good for a chuckle every couple of lines, but, it consistently feels like material that thinks [it's funnier than it is](https://gamerant.com/adult-swim-animated-series-smiling-friends/). It feels like the team thinks saying the word "canceled" or "slay" is enough to get a laugh on its own. Danny and Lisa DeVito have no trouble slipping into the snarky chemistry of a rebellious girl and her snarky dad. The reason it falls short of that show's lofty heights is almost entirely in the writing. When Chrissy's powers come in, none-too-subtly synchronized with her first period, Satan, portrayed by [Lisa's real dad Danny](https://gamerant.com/danny-devito-best-roles/), informs her of her grim parentage and his plans for their relationship. [grand premiere includes the](https://gamerant.com/prey-hulu-biggest-premiere-amber-midthunder/) first two episodes of the six-episode series. The Devil wants Chrissy to help him reclaim his power while Laura wants anything but, leaving Chrissy caught in the middle. The three creators, most of the major cast, and Dan Harmon's Harmonious Claptrap have EP credits on the project. It's enough to get a representative slice of what the show's going for but also enough to suggest that it might be less than the sum of its parts.
Danny DeVito, Aubrey Plaza and Lucy DeVito discuss FXX's hellishly entertaining new animated series, Little Demon.
You can go big, you can go, like Lucy was saying, honest, you can go real, but there’s a thing that seems to be always hanging over you, you gotta get it out… I give it up to all the voiceover actors in the world who are really good at it because I find it very hard actually. The creators of the show have written wonderful scripts and we get to improvise around. Danny DeVito: I love the freedom of it. I think that that’s a really fun way to explore coming-of-age, grappling with your broken family. I think that there are dualities in everyone, and being a 13 year old girl you can be demon-like at times. Danny DeVito: I don’t find them evil and bad, that’s the thing right there. Aubrey Plaza: I find it very challenging. As one can imagine with a family this non-traditional, chaos reigns…as does the non-stop threats posed by demons and Old Scratch himself, who yearns to possess his spawn’s soul. The stakes are high. She’s a complicated character. Take a look.

Darcy Fowler, Seth Kirschner, and Kieran Valla discuss their new animated comedy, starring Aubrey Plaza, Lucy DeVito, and Danny DeVito, about a 13-year-old ...
“At the end of the day, Chrissy is a 13-year-old girl going through so much shit and now she's coming into this whole new side of her,” says Kirschner. “We wanted to have enough realism where the horror moments could actually play as truly horrifying but keeping enough of the poppier and more cartoonish elements, so the comedy was still landing.” It’s pure joy to watch and a sign of a good horror story.” “And then you walk out of the theater together, and the world keeps on turning. She’s literally in Middletown, Delaware, in middle school, and right in the middle of this custody battle, and just at the center of the madness of her life. “Suddenly, this woman has a baby girl who is the Antichrist and we kept aging her up until she was 13.” “And we really wanted to get across the depth and complexity of a fucked-up family and find the empathy that goes along with three people trying to navigate that.” Valla shares, “And then we had this idea of the custody battle and this girl being caught in the middle. “The world is so terrifying, and there are so many horrors everywhere, especially when you’re 13,” notes Fowler. According to Fowler, this is the gift of horror - having the ability to make already relatable themes even more potent. It’s also true for Satan, who has viewed himself in one way and now, he’s the father of a young girl and has to understand what that means in terms of his greater plans. Laura's character is someone who was on the run for the last 13 years and now she is settled down in one place for the first time and forced to take a long, deep look at herself in the mirror.

The world of American adult animation is in great health and has been for ages now thanks to immensely popular shows like Rick and Morty and beyond.
“I’d say probably the biggest difference is that originally it started off as a story of a young woman who was pregnant and she had a cursed womb. Created by Darcy Fowler, Seth Kirschner and Kieran Valla, the series follows the lives of a mother named Laura and her daughter Chrissy. - Danny DeVito as Satan
