Liger review: The performances are mixed at best. Vijay Deverakonda is measured and earnest. His physical transformation is splendid.
Bullying is the leitmotif of the film. Backdrops range from a pub to a metro rail but the themes remain stuck in one place. The flips and the feet-flying combats don't give a high for the reason that the writing falters incessantly. He makes the susceptible underdog look sweet, although we can't say he is irresistibly so. In 'Liger', though, the writing is rudimentary. The bad guys are reduced to dolts. Vijay Deverakonda is measured and earnest. Forget the emotions for a while. [Vijay Deverakonda](https://www.pinkvilla.com/entertainment/south/exclusive-vijay-deverakonda-wore-slippers-worth-rs-199-liger-trailer-launch-stylist-harmann-reveals-why)) is a natural MMA fighter who stammers a lot. Since the love story is uneven, uneventful and superficial, the only running emotion is the single mother's pride in her son's omnipotent abilities. His physical transformation is splendid. Even the negative characters would feel fresh.

The film and the fights don’t provide a high. The idea of a protagonist with a stammering problem is irritating. The film further goes downhill when the story shifts to Las Vegas. Puri Jagannadh begins this film as an inspirational story of a rise of a champion from a humble background. The Las Vegas sequences and the production values have brought the film a rich look. The film has a Mumbai setting. More than the story, the film doesn’t have a strong conflict or high emotional quotient, or a strong villain, the essential elements for mass movies. The so-called MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fights and sequences, which come one after the other, make a tiresome watch. Let’s find out whether the film lives up to the hype. The combination of director Puri Jagannadh and young sensation Vijay Deverakonda has occupied the media and social media space lately. However, the script doesn’t give him anything to go beyond the surface. But, it turns out to be a wasted effort as “Liger” looks like an exercise with no proper script.

Vijay Deverakonda's 'Liger' revolves around an aspiring MMA champion, whose biggest enemy is stutter.Liger. Vijay Devarakonda. Karan Johar. Charmme Kaur.
This Puri Jagannadh and Vijay Deverakonda film is a mishmash of sport, action and drama in which nothing makes an impact.
At the start of the film, the protagonist says that he is not good at narrating a story, but he will try. [Mike Tyson](https://www.thehindu.com/entertainment/movies/mike-tyson-to-star-in-vijay-deverakondas-liger/article36694213.ece) has its moments, but coming at the fag end of a shoddily-written story, it is too little and too late. Chunky Pandey appears in a brief character that begins as glitzy and fizzles out. Once Liger’s potential in MMA is established, the story introduces the leading lady who is characterised as a dimwit who is both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious, and annoying. Was that Puri’s way of showing the power of women after a string of glam doll characterisations of the leading women in his last few films? Ramya can pack a punch as a courageous mother but she is mostly made to scream and shout. Here the characterisations and storytelling are so banal that it is tough to root for the underdog story. In the opening minutes of Liger, a voiceover describes the title character as a slumdog from the streets of Mumbai who is aiming to win on an international podium. Predictable scenes follow in which Liger is ridiculed by the students of MMA and he has to fight to earn their respect. Some sort of a reveal about Tanya’s true reaction to the mother’s angst comes much later but by then, nothing matters as the film goes on a downward spiral. Hailing from Karimnagar and raising him on her own, she has moved to Mumbai to see him as an MMA national champion; the mother and son make ends meet by managing a tea stall. She goes to the balcony and waves to the crowd in a manner similar to SRK from Mannat.

Vijay Deverakonda’s Liger says at the start “I don’t know how to narrate a story properly,” & that’s the only true line Puri Jagannadh has directed in this film. Sunil Kashyap’s background score remains the best thing about the film as it at least tries to fulfil its purpose & that’s the lowest bar to touch for every department of Liger. The angst of his character just doesn’t come across as natural in any way due to the disastrous story & screenplay. She plays an Instagram influencer who aspires to be an actress in Hollywood, why wasn’t I informed before that Ananya is playing herself in the film? He just overdoes the stuttering part of his character to an extent that you’d feel offended even if you don’t stammer while talking. Well, that’s what leads to Mike Tyson giving the worst performance of his career both inside and outside the ring.

Jagannadh has been down in the dumps for a while now, but he is still known for Pokiri (2006), which had the greatest climax portions in the history of Telugu cinema. He runs and runs through the screenplay beats, to the point of the film feeling like nonsense. He is supposed to be the perfect crossbreed of new-age Telugu cinema that combines old-world masala with modern presentation. Liger worships Mark, and in the end, has to fight his idol to rescue Tanya. Liger loves Tanya while his mother Balamani (Ramya Krishna) wants him to focus on winning the national championship and believes that women are a distraction to her son. Puri Jagannath’s Liger is a masterclass in how to get nothing right.
Cast: Vijay Deverakonda, Mike Tyson, Ananya Panday, Ramya Krishnan, Ronit Roy, Vishu Reddy and Makarand Deshpande. Director: Puri Jagannadh.
She drills into the boy that it is for him to complete his father's unfulfilled dream of become the national champion. If anything, he only drags it down all the way to the level of his own bootlaces. It is massive mess of a movie that Vijay Deverakonda's newfangled physique and action chops cannot salvage. Liger idolizes legendary MMA fighter Mark Anderson (Mike Tyson, in his first Indian movie, has an extended cameo that is cringe-inducing as everything else in Liger), whose portrait hangs on the wall of his modest home. The lady tells her son that everyone in this world has flaws but if he manages to achieve his goal his speech will begin to sound like a song. [Liger](https://www.ndtv.com/entertainment/aafat-song-out-vijay-deverakonda-and-ananya-panday-s-electrifying-chemistry-steals-the-show-3230216) centres on a young man who has a severe stammer but is in full flow when he is allowed to express himself with his fists of fury. He puts in a great deal of effort, but the film is way too wobbly to get off the ground and soar. The lead actor is saddled with spectacularly sloppy scenes in which the other actors are required to holler at the top of their voices to make up for the monosyllables that the pugnacious hero utters with a great degree of difficulty. It devises means to sink even deeper into a quagmire of clumsiness in the very next sequence. That is the kind of movie Liger is. This is a Hindi-Telugu bilingual written and directed by Puri Jagannadh, whose Puri Connects banner has bankrolled the film in collaboration with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. But these are strictly of the kind that the film and the Arjun Reddy star could have done without.
'Liger' is about a mother and son, who have come to Mumbai with the ambition of pursuing MMA glory.
We learn nothing about Liger’s own strengths and weaknesses in the MMA arena, except notice that he has a proclivity for showing the middle-finger a lot and also, drawing attention to his crotch during fights. The film’s supposed to be about an underdog “fightaaaaa” winning big at the Mixed Martial Arts, and yet, we learn precious little about the sport—with the fights interpreted as stunt sequences in your average mass film. In one love scene, she asks him to say her name and when he stutters before finishing, she exclaims, “So cute!”—like a zoo visitor observing an exotic animal making a strange noise. I wouldn’t have blamed Liger at all, had he felt justified in interrogating his mother about giving him a name that’s likely to scar him for life… "Liger", the film, is about a mother and son, who have come to Mumbai with the ambition of pursuing MMA glory. Perhaps because she’s modelled after a wild animal, she’s shown to scream a lot, under the name of ferocity.
The new Indian MMA movie Liger has finally released in theatres across the country, but how have critics reviews rated the film?
[Gulte](https://www.gulte.com/moviereviews/192188/liger-movie-review) scored Liger at another 2/5, praising the action scenes and the character designs, but critical of the narrative, songs and dialogue. [123telugu](https://www.123telugu.com/reviews/liger-telugu-movie-review.html). “Liger” neither delivers a knockout punch nor does it offer thundering moments. A wafer-thin storyline, Vijay’s stammering act, and rushed proceedings are basic drawbacks.” – Liger Review, via [Mirchi9](https://www.mirchi9.com/reviews/liger-movie-review/). The review also noted how “The flips and the feet-flying combats don’t give a high for the reason that the writing falters incessantly. “Liger also joins the long list of films that blame women for men getting distracted. Done-to-death plot turns are intercut with action.” The film follows the usual template of a sports drama, mixed with commercial cinema – which is fine, but it just isn’t done well.” “A story about martial arts, dreams and star crossed lovers.

I'd admit the fatigue has set in but in the larger self-awareness of the film, playing to the stereotype works. Clearly, there's a lot to enjoy in Liger, if you're as invested in its ability to not take itself too seriously. Whenever she's giving the pep talk to Liger, one can't help but wish how cool it would be to watch her go at it in the ring. Ramya Krishnan seems to be carrying forward her Baahubali act, carrying her son over her shoulders, braving the roaring seas and the arrow in the back. Liger's quest to make it big in the field where Tanya's dad calls the shots feeds into the real-life outsider vs. Ronit Roy plays the hardened coach, in line with all the tough characters he's been playing since Vikramaditya Motwane's Udaan (2010). She's the Tiger in Liger, and gets the mannerisms, pace, and ferocity of the spirit animal on point. It's no surprise he's the rare mainstream actor who's made a space for himself in the largely nepotistic Telugu film industry. But that works brilliantly for a film that's not interested in her complicity. Speaking of nepotism, it's tricky to infer if Ananya Panday is in on the joke that the film cracks on her privilege and Gen-Z superficiality. The stammer seems symbolic of his class, while Ananya is later revealed to be the daughter of, no points for guessing, Chunky Panday, an uber rich MMA promoter in the US. - Ramya Krishnan is the 'Tiger' in Liger, getting the mannerisms, pace, and ferocity of the spirit animal on point.

'Attack' is relegated to the background. At the box office, it will have a tough time attracting the audience to cinemas. But overall, the film is peppered with very silly moments, and the writing nosedives in the second half. 'Aafat' is the most memorable of the lot followed by 'Waat Laga Denge'. Balamani gets the shock of her life when she realizes that Liger is in love with the girl whom she hates the most. Puri Jagannadh's direction is not up to the mark. Ali (Ali bhai) is average. [LIGER ](https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movie/liger/cast/)is the story of a born fighter. In places, Puri even leaves gaps and straight away jumps the narrative. Aug. If real news is important to you, please consider making a donation of $5, $10 or whatever you can afford, to help keep our journalism on stands. This Liger never roars, in fact, it can barely muster a purr in one of the year’s most disappointing big star vehicles. Devarakonda, who became one of India’s biggest stars after 2017’s Arjun Reddy – a film clumsily referenced here as a wink to the audience – is clearly talented but hamstrung by this attempt at hero worship. Puri Jagannadh is one of Telugu cinemas most active filmmakers, and over the last decade he’s made a career making action potboilers, but even with that low artistic bar, Liger falls flat. Who knows!) called De Las Putas that would make anyone with even a passing familiarity with the Spanish language cringe until they died. With its strict adherence to the worst habits of Telugu mainstream filmmaking, Liger fails to engage the audience in any meaningful way, instead falling back on dated tropes and poor directorial choices. Eventually after a number of scrums with a local competitor, Liger’s martial arts coach (Roy) manages to send him to an international MMA competition in Las Vegas. Before too long he crosses paths with would-be social media star Taniya (Panday), whose only ambition is to reach one million likes on Instagram, by any means necessary. Behind him every step of the way is Balamani (Krisnan), his mother and the widow of a great fighter who died in the ring. What do you get when you combine one of the Telugu film industries brightest up and coming actors with one of its highest profile directors? [Josh Hurtado](/authors/josh-hurtado/), [Fri., Sept.
Liger movie review: Vijay Deverakonda's Bollywood debut is devoid of any coherent plot, performances, or action that does not involve the hero strutting in ...
Something is happening in one scene and suddenly the actors break into a glamorous song and dance sequence. The climax brings the much hyped cameo of Mike Tyson playing a fictional character called Mark Henderson and that, I feel, was the only saving grace. How can I not mention about the beautifully choreographed and elaborate song and dance sequences in Liger. For Ananya, I don't know if she was told what she had to do in the film. In terms of performance, no matter how good Vijay looks in every frame and brings his best to the table, the poorly written script with even worse execution terribly fails him. They try to balance it by cleverly placing a reference to Kabir Singh (Arjun Reddy's Hindi remake) and how men are egoistic and can't take no from a girl. With a screenplay so juvenile, story without a head or a tail, direction limited to showing the hero's moves in slo-mo, director Puri Jagannadh's Liger is extremely flawed and below average for the hype it created. The referee has announced the name of the fighter from India as the 'Slumdog from the streets of Mumbai', and the waving tricolour has evoked a sense of patriotism already. Moving on, Liger manages to get under the wings of his MMA coach (Ronit Roy), who lays down the rules clearly and at the top it is staying focussed and away from girls. Also, Vijay has had his share of troubles with Arjun Reddy that was tagged problematic and misogynist but Liger hasn't really learnt a lesson there either. [Ramya Krishnan](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/ramya-krishnan)), who have come from Telangana to Mumbai because she wants to see her son become a national MMA champion. And then we see the hero running on the street of Las Vegas trying to save the woman of his life from a bunch of goons.

Because the truth is worth it.) The film, which was supposed to be this big pan –India entertainer, is a disappointment of colossal portions. After all, it’s the same film where when Liger collapses mid-fight, his mother screams through the television at him and he dutifully wakes up. We know Tanya has a brother Sanjay, who can't stand Liger and is his MMA rival. Our main man stutters and the film decides to make a big deal of it. The movie makes a big deal of that too.
