Top Gun: Maverick Flies Past Avengers: Infinity War's Box Office Tally (Game Rant)

The movie theater remains the best way to experience Top Gun Maverick as Tom Cruise shatters Avengers: Infinity War's box office record.

Ultimately, that seems like the perfect prize for a sequel that does justice to Tony Scott's Top Gun. All that, combined with Paramount's reluctance to drop Top Gun on its streaming service means movie theaters are still the go-to option for most people wanting to experience or rewatch the film. Regardless, Top Gun: Maverick's stellar run in theaters could set an important precedent for future blockbusters. All of these records were set with the clear advantage of being able to rely on the massive income generated by the Chinese box office, whose censors prevented The film’s success story has vindicated Cruise and the studio’s decision to hold off Top Gun's release for as long as possible until the market conditions were suitable for a widespread and prolonged theatrical run. Still, Paramount's strategy of keeping the movie in cinema theaters as long as possible could see it beat Black Panther's $700 million tally next.

Q: You've brushed off "Maverick" sequel questions in the past. Hans Zimmer uses those five or six notes from "Danger Zone" over and over, in the film's beginning and in the third act. We had worked with each rehearsal to get the altitude we wanted. And then once we heard Gaga's song that she had written, the problem was solved. "Take My Breath Away" is really Maverick and Charlie's theme from the first film. It never occurred to me to use it as a love theme for this film. The relationship between Maverick and Penny is much deeper than a purely physical one. Kosinski: The relationship between Maverick and Charlie is obviously a very different one. Was that used in the film? What was the thinking there? (Kilmer's) voice was digitally altered and blended a little bit just for clarity. "Our reaction is always the same: 'Congratulations, can you believe this?' And it just keeps going."

At Netflix it's Lili Reinhart who takes the lead, not Jamie Foxx.

Netflix publishes its own weekly top 10 on Tuesdays based on time viewed. Prices for all titles are for rental. Based on past similar originals, it’s a respectable position in its second month of availability. “The Next 365 Days,” the third installment in their sex thriller franchise, is #5. That explains its position flip with “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (Universal/$19.99) at all sites. Select usually means limited, but since Netflix and studios often don’t speak exactly the same language, it could mean the theater plan remains a work in progress that could be influenced by festival response. It’s a strange plan: The Netflix debut comes more than three months after its September Toronto premiere and its theatrical strategy is inconclusive. Two are from Paramount: “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Frank” (after four weeks in theaters) and “Orphan: First Kill” (released same day in theaters) are also available on Paramount Plus. Next week, all other game plans will be moot: “ [Top Gun: Maverick](https://www.indiewire.com/t/top-gun-maverick/)” (Paramount/$19.99) comes to PVOD rental platforms Tuesday and will undoubtedly dominate for the foreseeable future. Still AWOL is Universal’s “Nope,” which has no PVOD date a month after its theatrical release. This week saw four other new releases make the top 10. Only iTunes includes “Maverick” pre-buys on its charts, where it currently sits at #3 even though paying early doesn’t confer any advantage.

'Top Gun: Maverick' Director Joseph Kosinski Talks Fan Theories ... (Hollywood Reporter)

Top Gun: Maverick includes the return of Val Kilmer's Iceman, and watching it proved to be an emotional experience for the actor.

But it was a dream to be able to get to work with Ed Harris and have him play that role at the beginning of the film. So that was one scene I wanted him to see, and obviously, we were all a little nervous showing it to him just because we really wanted him to like it. And maybe down the road, if we come up with a story that feels like it absolutely has to happen, then maybe it will, but right now, I think we’re all just enjoying the relief of getting this one out the door. Hangman had some growing up to do, a little maturing to do as a pilot, and he comes through at the end of the movie, having gone through that arc and learning his lesson. Do you remember the first time you showed the finished scene to Tom and Val? And of course, he comes through in the end as well, in a spectacular way. Maverick needed to choose a wingman for that final mission, someone that he could count on, someone that would come back for him, as Rooster does in the third act. Well, we made the film to be enjoyed on the big screen, in the best theater you can find, and we finally were at a time where people felt comfortable going back to the theater to rediscover that experience that we all missed for a couple years. They got to see Tom come back to the role of Maverick after 35 years, and that was a real thrill for people. “Movies are meant to be interpreted in a variety of ways, and I love it when people read different meanings into it. “Obviously, we were all a little nervous showing it to him just because we really wanted him to like it. It’s a staggering achievement, to say the least, for a sequel to Tony Scott’s 36-year-old film, especially since it doesn’t fit the profile of most record breakers today.

The movie, though the action was contained in the first and last 20 minutes of the movie, had a satisfying, feel-good conclusion. On the other hand, all the characters of ‘“Top Gun: Maverick” are able to shine, partially because easily understood plot but also because of the good chemistry the characters and actors have with each other. “Top Gun” itself was the highest-grossing movie in its year of release, cashing in around $440 million in today’s dollars. Stream It Or Skip It: 'Top Gun: Maverick' on VOD, in Which Tom ... (Decider)

I'm a fighter pilot… It's not what I am, it's who I am.”

The movie’s a masterwork of cinematography and editing, aiming for visual clarity and hitting the bullseye. (The action inevitably blends CGI and practical stunts, but you’ll be hard-pressed to notice.) Not that the film is truly about anything beyond its existence as a diversion for its audience; its jingoistic military hoo-ah is more vague than it is in the original film, and the blatant nonspecificity of the enemy in this movie is more nudge-wink comedy than worthy of critical harping. They have three weeks to train for a two-and-a-half-minute endeavor in which four planes have to go LEFFFFFFTTTTTT real hard and then RIGGGGHHTTTTTTT a little bit harder and then left and right and left and right but faster, and then UPPPPPPPP and then upside-down and then DOWWWNNNNNNNN and then launch missiles at a miniscule target (it’s an illicit uranium-enrichment site in a very purposely unnamed country, if you must know) and hopefully destroy it and then go UUUUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP and try not to pass out from the Gs and then avoid some surface-to-air missiles and hopefully enemy planes that are better and faster than your planes don’t notice. He gets word that his program is about to be axed by a grimacing honcho (Ed Harris) barking this and that about Pentagon budgets, so Mav pushes the envelope: “They want Mach 10, let’s give ’em Mach 10.” Does he give ’em Mach 10? There’s a point where it reaches fever pitch, teases us, breaks the tension and then lets rip like a golden retriever let off its leash to bound and gambol as we giggle helplessly. But the same aesthetic rigor Cruise brings to the Mission: Impossible franchise easily translates to Maverick, which renders the highway to the danger zone even faster and more dangerous than before. Meanwhile, Mav reconnects with his ex, Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly), now an available single mom who owns the bar with the piano in it, as well as Iceman (like I said, Val Kilmer!), because this movie needs to make us cry before it juices the living crap out of our adrenaline glands. Sex and Skin: One amusingly awkward, uber-dorky non-sex sex scene in which Cruise and Connelly are primarily shot from the neck up and has more smiling than kissing. You’ll never take the movie star out of this guy. That lungs-of-steel, guts-of-iron mission requires Mav to return to Top Gun, the school for elite fighter pilots, and teach the young whippersnapper cockpitters how to be total f—ing badasses, while Vice Admiral Cyclone Simpson (Jon Hamm) never stops pursing his lips disapprovingly as he tries to keep the lowercase-m maverick from breaking all the rules even though the mission pretty much demands that all the rules be broken. You know, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, the guy whose picture is next to “hotshot” in the dictionary.

That whole ending scene where Rooster and Maverick were struck down by enemy fighter pilots was one of the best in the film and is totally rewatchable. In it, Iceman uses his computer to speak to Maverick regarding his status as a teacher and his guilt about the past, saying that the “Navy needs Maverick.” It’s made even more powerful when Iceman, despite his cancer, speaks to Maverick personally. For past live-action movies, Paramount has tended to give them at least 45 days exclusively in theaters before making them available to stream on Paramount Plus. The movie is distributed by Paramount Pictures, which is owned by the same parent company as Paramount Plus. But Top Gun: Maverick still isn't streaming, even as other ways to watch it at home are coming into land. Does any part of you want the success of the sequel to stand on its own? What would the story be that would get the band back together? But again, it’s always coming up with the right story that makes you go back to that world. It’s been amazing to have that response from not only people on the street, but heroes of mine. Every time I came on screen, they’d cheer and the other people in the theater were like, “What are these people doing cheering for Hangman every time he comes on screen?” They started getting the whole theater to start cheering every time I came on screen. We set out to tell a great story and make a great movie. Tom and Jerry have said, “We’ve been a part of some of the biggest movies for decades and we’ve never seen anything like this.” It’s special to see them react to it, especially on that thread. I don’t know if Hangman is going to look the same. It’s, like, “The Notebook” but with Rooster and Hangman. “You have to wait and see if you get the right story … “I approached [the sequel] as Maverick’s rite of passage being the fundamental core of the film. In the process, “Maverick” has racked up an eye-popping $1.4 billion globally to stand as the highest-grossing movie of the year.

Top Gun: Maverick Isn't Not a Death Dream, Director Joseph ... (Vulture)

'Top Gun: Maverick' director Joseph Kosinski loves the popular theory that the film is a death dream for Tom Cruise's character.

“I love hearing that theory, and, certainly, there’s a mythic kind of element to the story that I think lends itself to that sort of interpretation based on who Maverick is and what he represents,” he said. [The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/top-gun-maverick-val-kilmer-iceman-1235203720/) that Maverick’s “rite of passage” in the movie lends itself to the death-dream idea. “Movies are things that are meant to be interpreted in your own way and based on how you see the world and the experiences that you’ve had. "To be honest with you, every time we have a successful movie, it surprises me."

He wanted the actors in the jets, and Joe said that was the only way he wanted to do it too. It's up to the Academy and the voting body. Joe had a lookbook, came in, and told him the story about Goose's son, showed him what it would look like, and the one thing Tom said to Joe was that if we were going to do this, we were going to do it for real. Hopefully, they saw the film and enjoyed it the way the rest of the world has. Top Gun: Maverick is in theaters and on Digital. They were in sync right away on how the movie was going to be made and the story they would tell. Do you know many versions of a sequel or a prequel have been discussed over the last 36 years? Tom designed the flying program for them before they actually got in the F-18s and was really instrumental in designing the aerial sequences with our director, Joseph Kosinski. Over $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office and already the sixth highest grossing movie in domestic box office history, it's safe to say Top Gun: Maverick is far from the Danger Zone in movie theaters. It's always a thrill when you hit something out of the park, as this one did. I always hope for the best and expect the worst, and this, fortunately, turned out even beyond anybody's wildest imagination.

After Top Gun: Maverick Return, Val Kilmer Shares Thoughts On ... (Cinema Blend)

Following his reprisal of Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick, Val Kilmer has shared whether he'd be interested in playing Batman again.

[DC movie](https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2566174/watch-dc-movies-in-order-chronological-canon) received and how many times Clooney has apologized for Batman & Robin in the years since, it’s safe to say that Kilmer dodged a bullet by not suiting back up. A year later, [Kilmer described playing Batman as being “so isolating,”](https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2571916/val-kilmer-why-playing-batman-so-isolating-returns) but evidently he hasn’t shut the door on a Batman return entirely. Kilmer was the third actor to play the DC Comics superhero in a live-action feature-length movie, following Keaton and Adam West. It is important to mention that because of his battle with throat cancer, Val Kilmer now speaks with a raspy voice, and oftentimes communicates with an electric voice box plugged into his trachea. So now that the proverbial table is set for actors who’ve played superheroes many years earlier to reprise their roles, Val Kilmer will at least entertain the possibility of a second outing as Batman. Having risen to Hollywood stardom through movies like Real Genius, Top Gun, Willow and Tombstone, Val Kilmer scored a particularly notable cinematic honor in the mid-1990s: being cast as Batman.

Some fans believe Maverick died in this sequence, leaving the rest of the film to play out in a dream. In addition, Maverick and the rest of his trainees are seemingly fighting an unnamed enemy who doesn't seem to have any direct ties to our real-world counterpart. However, regardless of fan theories, audiences can enjoy Top Gun: Maverick for what it is: a massive Hollywood blockbuster that treated its characters and story with immense care. Tom Cruise found himself as one of the movie's heroes and one of the heroes of modern cinema as the sequel, 36 years in the making, has pulled in $1.4 billion at the global box office. One of these theories would change the entire outlook of the movie, offering a more morbid perspective on the mega-hit sequel. During the opening Darkstar sequence, Maverick is able to eclipse Mach 10 speed, traveling in his hypersonic plane.
