The Eagles take on the Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium in their second preseason competition following two productive joint practices in Cleveland.
The Eagles solidified their 21-20 lead, tallying their first preseason win. • Down 21-10, Cleveland quarterback Josh Rosen threw two consecutive incompletions with the fourth-down attempt defended by linebacker Shaun Bradley on a pass intended for Javon Wims. • With four seconds remaining, Eagles cornerback Josh Jobe defended a second-and-goal scoring attempt by the Browns, a pass intended for Mike Harley, forcing Cleveland to settle for another York field goal. • On the subsequent drive, the Eagles forced another field goal attempt from Cade York – this time, 55 yards. • Boston Scott didn't play in the first preseason game at Lincoln Financial Field due to concussion protocol, but he was not slow to remind everyone of his role on this team's offense. • All of the Eagles' starters, with the exception of rookie Cam Jurgens, who's been taking first-team reps in place of an injured Jason Kelce, did not dress for the outing on Sunday afternoon.
Let's look at 10 players to watch Sunday as the Eagles continue their roster evaluation in the preseason against the Browns. By Dave Zangaro.
QB Carson Strong: The UDFA from Nevada hasn’t gotten many practice reps this summer and didn’t play a single snap in the first preseason game. LB Patrick Johnson: Like Jackson, Johnson is another late-round pick in his second season who has been shining for most of the summer. With Miles Sanders on the shelf, Gainwell has had an opportunity to get some high-leverage snaps in practice and hasn’t done much with them. CB Josh Jobe: The UDFA from Alabama has risen to the top among the group of young corners fighting for roster spots. There’s a decent chance the Eagles hold the sixth-round pick out of this game, but it would really help his cause to play and look good. S Reed Blankenship: The UDFA from Middle Tennessee State has put himself firmly in the discussion for a roster spot.

With the Browns and Eagles both expected to sit most of their key players, Sunday's preseason game is a big chance for a lot of reserves and rookies.
It took two plays in the Jacksonville game to see the Browns' plans at center blow up. Since that's not likely an option, Sunday will give the two players vying to be the actual backup to Brissett during Watson's 11-game suspension a chance to put a lot of snaps on film. That isn't expected to be the case next Saturday, when the Browns are expected to treat the preseason finale against the Bears as a dress rehearsal. There's not much to choose from at quarterback when Stefanski has already said that both Jacoby Brissett and Deshaun Watson aren't going to play against the Eagles. Ford, the fifth-round pick out of Cincinnati, ran for 57 yards on 10 carries, and caught four passes for 45 yards. The difference is, there may be even fewer of their starters and key backups who will play than even did against the Jaguars.

Closer look at Cam Jurgens, Davion Taylor, K'Von Wallace, and others.
I guess it’s worth noting that we didn’t see much from Jordan Davis either, and none of the edge rushers did anything too noteworthy either. He's so physical when coming downhill.— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) Tartt has been desperate to hit someone all half Not sure he's enjoying being out there with the 3s. K’Von Wallace would have been pretty happy to see Jaquiski Tartt playing with the 3’s this week. To be fair, I didn’t think his partner Nakobe Dean did a great deal either but it’s only his second ever game and he still avoided blocks better than Davion Taylor did. He obviously has good hands but didn’t separate much on any of his catches so I wouldn’t get too carried away. The DT is lined up on his outside shoulder and he has the quickness to immediately get playside on the reach block and then has the strength to just toss him to the ground... Look at the the push that Jurgens gets on this one!! Fantastic vision on the move and really strong finish to pancake his guy.— Jonny Page (@JonnyPage9) Great job by Opeta on the move and what else can you say about Jurgens?! Just like last week, there was only one guy I was watching on nearly every snap. I also tend to to focus on potential starters and other important players as they are the most interesting!

“Any time you see someone on the turf, regardless of how they got here it’s hard as a coach to watch a guy go down,” Daboll said. As for the remainder of the division, it’s hard to be optimistic about either the Washington Commanders or the New York Giants. Coach Brian Daboll said it’s “a scary time” when you see a player laying on the field. However, the Cowboys lost two receivers during the offseason (Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson), free-agent addition James Washington suffered a broken foot in training camp — which will sideline him for six to 10 weeks — and Michael Gallup will still be recovering from a torn ACL when the season begins. Brown added to all the weapons surrounding quarterback Jalen Hurts — and that should help the Eagles challenge for the division crown. [Andre Dillard may be traded — Jalen Reagor, too — but the Eagles’ former first rounders know how far they’ve come - Inquirer](https://www.inquirer.com/eagles/andre-dillard-eagles-browns-jalen-reagor-trade-20220821.html) He has versatility in that he is a runner, a good receiver, can line up in the slot, is a great blocker and comes on and goes off without any mouth about his playing time. Allen is still a long shot to make Eagles' 53-man roster, yet there may be a practice squad spot waiting.
It's great to have so many positives to discuss after an Eagles win, even if that win comes during the preseason. Here are a few game balls.

A regulation game is a much different thing from a controlled practice, and there is some benefit to be found in giving your players a little taste of that before the season. Mostly, from a logistical standpoint: reacquainting oneself with the play-calling and the play clock and the line judges and the spatial awareness of the stadium itself. I realize that this is a self-defeating attitude for someone who is an active participant in an industry that attempts to cull revenue from the idea that you can wring some sort of meaning from August football. I felt like they got the work in they needed, and that’s why I rested them.” Beyond that, what can you really say about the Eagles on an afternoon when most of the Eagles didn’t play? Which meant they had even less to gain from the “official” exhibition on Sunday.

When Philadelphia Eagles fans think back on the second preseason game of the 2022 NFL season, it will forever be remembered as “The Devon Allen Game.”.
Fortunately, it’s not always about the journey, but the destination, and Cain looks pretty happy to be in Philadelphia right now making plays for Minshew, Reid Sinnett, and Jalen Hurts. Still, Cain spent the better part of his first two seasons in Indie, and had he not suffered a torn ACL during his rookie training camp, maybe he’d still be there right now. Fans, for the most part, can’t watch practices, and since only the most astute observers know exactly what each play is supposed to do on any given snap, it’s hard to really judge performances accurately. Does Cain actually have a chance to make the Eagles’ roster? And yet, Allen didn’t finish out the game with the most receiving yards on the Eagles or in the game as a whole. Despite playing alongside Allen, Britain Covey, Jalen Reagor, and Quez Watkins, Allen led the team in targets, receptions, and yards, and hauled in some pretty impressive sideline-skirting back shoulder passes from Gardner Minshew.

With [Jalen Reagor](/nfl/player/21686/Jalen+Reagor)struggling in the contest and rumors of him surfacing on the roster bubble, Cain took a step in the right direction to make the team. Brown](/nfl/player/21042/A.J.+Brown)and [DeVonta Smith](/nfl/player/21687/DeVonta+Smith)were inactive, while slot receiver [Quez Watkins](/nfl/player/21957/Quez+Watkins)recorded only two targets with minimal usage. The Eagles were giving their backup receivers reps, with [Gardner Minshew](/nfl/player/20880/Gardner+Minshew)starting under center.
A first look at the Eagles projected 53-man roster with final cuts arriving soon.
[Reed Blankenship](/nfl/players/2805656/reed-blankenship/) is still in the mix for a roster spot, but he'll have to unseat Scott or Wallace to do it. [Super Bowl](/nfl/superbowl/) LII, as Edwards and Dean continue to fight for the starting job at the [MIKE. White](/nfl/players/2072143/mike-white/) will start at the WILL while Taylor provides valuable depth -- even if he struggled in the second preseason game. [Jaquiski Tartt](/nfl/players/1761394/jaquiski-tartt/) -- who has struggled in camp -- at safety. Jobe has emerged above all the cornerbacks the Eagles brought in over the past year with his play at outside cornerback, a position the Eagles could use some quality depth. Johnson is also a good special teamer and has value in kickoff and punt coverage -- plus the Eagles used one of their five draft picks on him. Driscoll can play guard and tackle while Opeta gives the Eagles added depth on the interior of the line. The Eagles starting offensive line is set in stone and the second team is very good -- but also in flux. Dillard could be traded, but the Eagles aren't just going to give a valuable left tackle away for a day three pick. The Eagles need a blocking tight end, so Stoll may be the player Togiai will have to beat out. There are still open spots available at wide receiver and safety, along with the question of how many players at certain positions the Eagles keep on the initial roster. Goedert and Stoll are roster locks, but the Eagles do have some question marks at the position.
If it comes down to Cain and Jalen Reagor, what will the Eagles do? Cain has had a terrific training camp, and in the preseason game against the Browns on ...
I am just making sure I am handling my own and doing my job.” “He is a guy I have a ton of confidence in. Undrafted rookie Britain Covey has had a strong camp and is the Eagles’ best returner. He hasn’t had a terrible camp but he hasn’t exactly done anything to increase his value. I have been working so hard for these opportunities and I am just trying to make the most of them.” At the end of the day, you just have to keep doing your job and everything will just take care of itself.” I am always looking for him when he is out there.” He’s just never been able to put it all together, make a team and stay healthy. “Me and Deon had a lot of experience on the scout team last year,” Minshew said. I have been working a lot, just making sure I am doing the right thing on and off the field. Brown, Zach Pascal, DeVonta Smith and Quez Watkins. “I just get more opportunities now and that is all I can say, and I am just trying to make the most of them,” Cain said.
After two intense days of joint practices, the Eagles earned a 21-20 preseason win over the Browns on Sunday in Cleveland. By Reuben Frank.
Allen isn’t making the 53, but when you see a play like that you understand why the Eagles were willing to invest the time in an Olympic hurdler who’s been away from the game for six years and why they’d like to keep him around on the practice squad. But after watching the two days of joint practices and the reps that the starters got against the Browns and then seeing all the valuable reps the backups got on Sunday, I’m convinced this is the best way to go. Now, he’s generally going up against the other team’s third stringers, but he’s active, he’s tough, he’s physical and he’s smart, and if you have those elements in your game, you have a chance. Playing pro football after not playing any football since 2016 is incredibly challenging, but Allen has been quietly putting in the work, getting acclimated to running in pads again, learning the offense, and we finally got a glimpse of what he’s capable of when he ran away from one-time Eagle cornerback Lavert Hill and reeled in a 55-yard touchdown bomb from Sinnett for his first catch since Sept. They can all run and they’ve all got potential, but none of them is a finished product. I don’t want Hunt, and I don’t think the Eagles do either. He’s 25 years old, he’s with his third NFL team, he’s never played in a regular-season game, he hasn’t played well in the preseason games – other than the bomb to Devon Allen – but the Eagles seem to have handed him the No. The Eagles have a terrific stable of backs with Sanders, Scott and Gainwell. I know there’s been a lot of talk about whether the Eagles should consider acquiring Kareem Hunt, but the Eagles are in good hands with their running back group, and you saw Sunday what Boston Scott and Kenny Gainwell can do. You'd like to see that group figure out a way to stop veteran Joshua Dobbs and the Browns’ second offense, but as a group they seemed a step slow or out of place much of the time. They were as vanilla as possible, but solid line play is solid line play, and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland finds a way to get everybody in his room ready to play. He’s got great size at 6-2, 200, he’s got some experience – he started six games for the Colts and Steelers in 2019 – and he’s by far the best of the next group behind DeVonta Smith, A.J.
The offensive line for the Browns continues to be outstanding. A group that included Alex Taylor, Drew Forbes, Michael Dunn at center, Hjalte Froholdt and James ...
If the Browns make a change on that side of the ball, it's likely going to come from outside the current roster. That was on display a handful of times against the Eagles, able to get into the backfield and blow up plays on the blitz and close on pass catchers. The Browns have a several linebackers all likely competing for one spot, so Fields is by no means safe, but he at showed some of the ability that the Browns saw when they decided to draft him in the fifth round. continue to be in the mix. looks like he will be a priority for the Browns practice squad. He still needs to work on developing a plan as a pass rusher, but the tools are eye-popping. He was the Browns leading receiver in the contest, able to make some receptions and block well. Alex Taylor was in for all of the Browns 72 offensive snaps and he was impressive. Anthony Schwartz is heavily criticized for drops and he had another one against the Eagles, prompting many to dismiss his performance entirely. The Browns were showcasing Taylor in an attempt to draw interest from teams that have question marks on their offensive line. Stepping in and trying to make early contributions at that position isn't easy, but the Browns had little issue with the former Georgia Bulldog. Failing that, the Browns would be happy to have him on their practice squad.
Here are some Eagles who helped and hurt themselves during the preseason game against the Browns. By Dave Zangaro.
Jobe on Sunday had a nice open-field tackle early in the first half and then had a PBU near the end of the half. DB Andre Chachere: Working as a nickel cornerback (he’s naturally a safety) Chachere had a chance to get a sack and couldn’t bring the QB down. DE Matt Leo: The internationally exempt Leo has been with the Eagles since 2020 and he still doesn’t look like he belongs. CB Kary Vincent Jr.: In a crowded cornerback room, some had high hopes for Vincent, the former track star from LSU. This was the biggest-name UDFA the Eagles signed and he can’t even get on the field. He had a few missed tackles and struggled to get off blocks. He had a good game with the second-team OL against the Browns. The Seahawks were going to cut him anyway, but Amadi made some plays on Sunday despite coming to the Eagles so late. He broke free of former Eagle Lavert Hill in the third quarter and caught a 55-yard touchdown bomb. Scott had 10 carries for 33 yards and a touchdown while Gainwell had 11 for 46 and a touchdown of his own. The rookie from Nebraska is really to watch in the open field. The former sixth-round pick from Indy had a 23-yard catch and a 24-yard catch back-to-back from Gardner Minshew.

Jaquiski Tartt has worked as a starter for most of his career, lining up as a 49ers first-stringer 64 times since being taken in the 2015 second round.

Training camp, however, has reignited the push for an otherwise-strong Philly roster to have more help at the position. Harris worked as a full-time starter last season for the Eagles, but Mosher adds the team’s lack of speed at this position is viewed as a concern. The longtime San Francisco starter is on the outside looking in right now, Berman adds in a roster prediction that has former UDFAs The other Eagles veteran safety, [Anthony Harris](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/H/HarrAn01.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), may not be locked in as a starter. Epps has missed time recently because of a back issue as well. Epps, 26, stands in front of Harris and Tartt (both 30), but the Eagles should be expected to seek a starter upgrade alongside the fourth-year player. Harris and Tartt each signed one-year deals with Philadelphia this offseason, the former doing so to stay with the team.
Sunday's win over the Browns featured standout performances by Devon Allen and Deon Cain, highlighting the depth at the position.
The offense has been humming, the passing game clicking, and wide receivers who are on the same page as the quarterbacks and who are winning their battles against defensive backs are a huge reason for the success. The result of the lessons Moorehead has taught and the way the players have absorbed the details and applied them in practice is a group that has been highly productive on the field. "They see what's going on in the room, the level of competition we have in that room. You want to have that kind of play from every guy in the room." One of the goals that Howie Roseman and his personnel department and the coaching staff have every year is to make cuts difficult. "You know, in general, just making sure I do the right thing on and off the field.
