Bright spots: The defensive line had a great week in Indianapolis, not only during Saturday's game, but in the joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday. Running back Craig Reynolds added 37 yards on seven carries (5.3). He averaged 38 yards per return, with a long return of 61 yards. He had four returns for a total of 152 yards. Which units look ready for the season and which ones desperately need preseason Game 3 to bounce back?

Indy’s complete lack of a run game is the only reason they didn’t put up a 40-burger on Detroit. The Lions dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball, and the defenders might have even outplayed the offensive line. Austin Bryant lived up to the praise he’s been getting this offseason by getting involved in two of those sacks, though he was only credited with one. And the most-improved unit goes to the defensive line! Evan Brown played a key starting role last year and with attrition being the norm in the NFL, there is a chance Brown or any of these players might have to play significant time this year. Each player still has a shot to make the team but it won’t be easy. He was a key backup for the The tight ends were very pedestrian in the receiving game with only Shane Zylstra making any noise (five catches for 34 yards). Justin Jackson made a strong case for the fourth running back spot with his performance. [Detroit Lions](https://www.prideofdetroit.com/) received plenty of reps against the [Indianapolis Colts](https://www.stampedeblue.com/) this week as they traveled there days prior to their Saturday afternoon game for joint practice sessions. Blough dinked and dunked most the game but also used his legs for the second straight week. David Blough got the start this week as Tim Boyle waited until the second half to take the reigns.

Detroit Lions roster projection 2.0: Why Tom Kennedy is still on the ... (mlive.com)

The Lions snapped their preseason losing streak at nine games. Which players helped their case in the win, and which did not?

For all the catches Kennedy is making, he just doesn’t have a trait that adds to what the Lions already have in that room. Breakdown: It’s going to be interesting to see what the Lions do on the interior of their defensive line. That was always expected to happen -- he is a former third overall pick after all, while Harris just moved to the position from safety -- but it has taken longer than expected. Breakdown: I’ve been high on Zylstra throughout camp, but was reticent to move him to the 53-man roster because I just didn’t know what the Lions had in fifth-round pick James Mitchell. As for Mitchell, you can’t say much definitively about the guy after he just played his first game in almost a year because of an ACL. He’s been on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle issue, and sounds like there’s a chance he won’t be ready for the start of the season. Tom Kennedy led the NFL in receiving yards during the opening week of the preseason, then hopped a plane to Indianapolis and added two touchdown catches to help Detroit snap a nine-game losing streak in the preseason. But the guy at the end of the bench just won’t stop making plays. He also put some nice touch on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Kennedy streaking toward the back of the end zone, led a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter and, perhaps most crucially, did not turn over the football. But he also tried to squeeze another football to a well-covered Kennedy that was picked off, and threw another into double-coverage in the end zone that forced the Lions to settle for a field goal. Then he caught two touchdown passes the following week, leading the Detroit Lions to a 27-26 win on Saturday afternoon against the Colts. Breakdown: With Jared Goff getting the afternoon off, David Blough earned the starting nod in Indianapolis, and a chance to make his case against Tim Boyle for QB2.

Why Detroit Lions' preseason win matters to Dan Campbell: 'It's got ... (Detroit Free Press)

The Detroit Lions snapped the NFL's longest preseason losing streak Saturday, winning an exhibition game for the first time since Aug. 24, 2018.

"I think there’s culture that is built with (winning)," Blough said. [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). Sam Ehlinger completed 9 of 11 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns in backup duty for the Colts. "If you want to be a winner, you’ve got to win. "It doesn’t matter where we play you, when we play you, we want to win. "And I think as a group, as a team, we got to learn that feeling and feel how that feels, so I’m glad we got this one. "(Coach) was referencing a bunch of different stuff (in his postgame speech), no matter what you’re playing, dominoes, spades, whatever, it just feels good to win," Kennedy said. 11 season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. They went 0-3 in the preseason last year, 0-4 in exhibition play in 2019 and lost their final game of the 2018 preseason. 24, 2018, win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s very important," Campbell said. "It’s important.

[Campbell](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/) could’ve asked for from his second-team offensive line. But, with him and Brock Wright out, the [Lions](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/) weren’t asking their tight ends to do a ton. Hockenson](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/) will be a much more vital part of the Lions’ passing game once the regular season begins. [Kalil Pimpleton](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/) dropped a fade route in the end zone, but bounced back to have a nice performance. He took all the reps in the return game Saturday, and averaged 38 yards on his four run backs. The Colts got within a point on the final drive of the game when Samson Nacua got behind Cedric Boswell for a 26-yard score with 38 seconds remaining. Early on, Mike Hughes took the bait on a fake bubble screen and allowed a big completion from Nick Foles to Dezmon Patmon. Bryant had an excellent day, as well, finishing with a sack of his own, in addition to the one he helped Cominsky with. For the game, the Lions averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Kennedy caught two touchdown passes in the game, finishing with five catches for 24 yards. Boyle, meanwhile, led the team to a touchdown on his first drive, and then did so again in crunch time. Both teams rested a plethora of their starters, meaning the game was a showcase for those who are on the fringe of making the final 53-man roster.

Dan Campbell cites importance of Lions' preseason win over the Colts (Sidelion Report)

Winning a preseason game is easily dismissed, but Lions head coach Dan Campbell thinks winning Saturday's game against the Colts is important.

A preseason win on its own is not a spring board to anything. Campbell noted how good a week it was for his team, capped by winning the game on Saturday. But he isn’t dismissing the importance of getting wins either.

It’s hard to overlook Alexander’s performance on Saturday though, and surely next week they’ll be looking to see if he can sustain that performance to warrant a spot. The Lions finished the day with 174 rushing yards on 5.3 yards per carry, both marks head and shoulders above anything we’ve come to expect from a Lions running game over the past decade. Still, Bryant got after it in the passing game, racking up a sack as well as cleaning up on what appeared to be another sack for him but would be credit to someone else. After a rough initial outing against Atlanta, the backup offensive line absolutely dominated the trenches from start to finish against Indianapolis. That wouldn’t stop him from finding his way back onto the field the very next play for his one sack on the day. Although Kennedy didn’t have a ton of yardage, his impact cannot be overstated in a game where the Lions did not play almost all of their big-bodied receivers.

Head coach Dan Campbell elected to rest all his known starters on Saturday afternoon against the Colts. All the preseason, all the camp stuff, it’s good getting better, but man, you just want to get to that Week 1 and get into the season and get rolling. He’s been less successful when matched up against offensive tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker, and those titanic clashes have helped expedite the rookie’s development. 2 draft pick that has looked the part since arriving on campus in the spring. Detroit Lions land Pro Bowl RB in 2017 NFL re-draft (Detroit Sports Nation)

With the No. 21 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions surprised quite a few people when they selected LB Jarrad Davis.

21 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft? But one thing the team did not do well is run the football—Detroit averaged a measly 76.3 yards per game on the ground. With the No.

Roundtable: Does WR Tom Kennedy Deserve Roster Spot? (Sports Illustrated)

1.) What was your biggest takeaway from the Lions-Colts preseason game? Vito Chirco: The Lions' run game and run defense both shined.

[Maakaron](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/): I think it's time for a deeper dive into the aforementioned polarizing cornerback from Ohio State. [Chirco](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/): I think throughout training camp, the coaching staff has tried its best to give Okudah the starting job by providing the 2020 No. [Maakaron](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/): All throughout camp, Lions head coach Dan Campbell has stated that third-year defensive back Jeff Okudah needs reps and needs to be out on the field playing in order to continue his development. But, his odds of making the team continue to improve, due to his solid play in camp and the preseason. [John Maakaron](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/snap-counts-lions-colts): For me, a couple of players cemented their spot on the 53-man roster, with their performance Saturday. Hopefully in 2022, Okudah can stay healthy all season, and the team can discover what it actually has in the former No. [Chirco](https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/): I think he does, but whether or not he earns a roster spot is a different story. So, for now, Boyle has the slight edge in the backup battle. I think the competition between the two for the backup QB job is neck-and-neck currently. In my latest 53-man roster projection, I have Kennedy and Trinity Benson making the roster, with Quintez Cephus being the odd man out. So, Kennedy will have to beat out both Quintez Cephus and Trinity Benson for what will likely be the last receiver spot on Detroit's season-opening roster. Jackson, Craig Reynolds and Godwin Igwebuike each rushed for north of 4.5 yards per carry, with Igwebuike scoring the game-winning touchdown.
