Studs and duds from Chargers' preseason loss to Cowboys (Chargers Wire)

Taking a look at the best and worst performers from the Chargers' preseason loss to the Cowboys.

It seems that even new coordinator Ryan Ficken hasn’t found a way to cure the Chargers curse just yet, as just about everything but the field goal team looked out of sorts in this one. It was a stellar performance for a player who was in the USFL this spring, and you’d certainly think that he’s upped his chances of making the practice squad with a showing like that. Kemp was all over the field in the second half, beginning with a pass deflection that probably should have been an interception late in the third quarter. With DeAndre Carter firmly entrenched as the team’s returner and Bandy handling punt returns this week, it looks more and more like Reed is playing catch-up in the battle for a roster spot. With Bandy again looking like an NFL-caliber player, it was up to Reed to match him as he did against the Rams. With Ja’Sir Taylor and Deane Leonard manning the fifth and sixth cornerback spots as of now, Sebastian seems like a long shot to even make the practice squad at this point.

The real focus of the preseason is getting to the regular season. It appears Dallas was fortunate in terms of injuries on Saturday night.

He rested along with many other starters for the preseason game. He waved the trainers off though and later confirmed he was okay. Perhaps the most important objective though, escaping the game without any serious injuries to players expected to be integral to the season, was met as well.

Cowboys studs and duds from Preseason Week 2 vs. Chargers (The Landry Hat)

The Dallas Cowboys looked much better in Week 2 of the preseason as Kavontae Turpin helped them run all over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The running back had to maneuver away from the edge defender before breaking off the long run. Like the Chargers’ overall play, it wasn’t exactly flawless, with several large blocks malfunctioning at first before it finally returned to form midway through the third quarter. “I think he has a huge role on this football team,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said of Stick in the early days of training camp. Everyone knew that he had a lot of intangibles, a lot of quarterbacking stuff that way. Stick got the start Saturday after coming off the bench to replace Chase Daniel in the Chargers’ loss last Saturday to the Rams. Unfortunately for the Chargers, there wasn't much outside of Palmer that went in their favor. I don’t think any of the five of them played very well," Staley said. But with their reinforcements added this offseason not playing in the preseason, they showed signs of their old self. "When you have two turnovers and you give up two special teams touchdowns, that’s the way the score is going to look," Staley said. The expectations for the Chargers are not just to reach the playoffs, but to get through the playoffs and contend for a Super Bowl. They allowed a 98-yard kick return and a 86-yard punt return – both by Cowboys returner KaVontae Turpin, the MVP of the USFL last season. This offseason the displeasure from the group led to overhauling the unit. "In the second half, we played better, so I was glad that we responded well. With just over a minute left in the first half, the Chargers faced fourth-and-4 at their 32-yard line and opted to punt. At least three Chargers were down before Turpin crossed the 50-yard line. “I got the heart of a lion,” Turpin told the CBS broadcast during a sideline interview. Within 12 seconds of his catch, Turpin reached the end zone. “It was his favorite team, so I just feel like he’s smiling down on me on my second preseason game. He ran straight up the middle of the field, trusting his speed and his blockers as he surged past a mass of defenders. He caught this one at the opponent’s 14-yard line and immediately juked to leave Chargers rookie defensive back Deane Leonard sprawled on the ground. Turpin had handled returns in the Cowboys’ preseason debut last week. Turpin’s first touch came with 6:17 to play in the first quarter, when he caught Chargers kicker Dustin Hopkins’ kickoff at the Cowboys’ 2-yard line. “I just feel like my boy Jeff Gladney looking down on me, man,” Turpin said.
