Quietly Rediscovered | The History Of the Minnesota Vikings, Part IV (Zone Coverage)

In 1981, the Minnesota Vikings played their last season in the old Met. Gone were the days of watching the Purple in the bitter cold, but something was.

There still were some stars in that era, including [Joey Browner](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BrowJo00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), [Steve Jordan](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=JordSt00,jordaste01&search=Steve+Jordan&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), and [Ahmad Rashad](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/R/RashAh00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), who kept the team relevant. The Herschel Walker trade, the Les Steckel debacle, and multiple strikes totally derailed the Vikings’ momentum. Vikings-49ers Game Observations (Vikings.com)

Minnesota started second-year pro Kellen Mond, who played nearly all of the first quarter, before veteran Sean Mannion entered the game and played the entire ...

Minnesota helped the third conversion when Janarius Robinson was penalized for a neutral zone infraction. No third downs: The Vikings put together their best drive of the first half by completely avoiding third down during the possession. Purdy followed with three more completions of 11, 16 and 11 to move within Gould's range. Muse had the biggest box score with three catches for 29 yards by the rookie. That's 11 catches for 110 of the team's 215 passing yards on 12 targets. Three conversions: The 49ers converted three third downs during the long possession, picking up a third-and-8 with a 13-yard pass to Willie Snead IV and a third-and-5 with a 5-yard pass to Hudson. Instead of a third-and-goal from the 5, the 49ers completed the scoring pass from the 2. A short pass was followed by an incompletion. Mond went 6-for-10 in the first quarter for 43 yards. Mond's passer rating in the first quarter was 30.4. Ellefson added two catches for 8 yards. 3 CB Cameron Dantzler, Sr., 4 RB Dalvin Cook, 7 CB Patrick Peterson, 8 QB Kirk Cousins, 17 WR K.J.

Instant analysis of Vikings 17-7 Loss vs. 49ers in Preseason Week 2 (Vikings Wire)

The San Francisco 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-7 at U.S. Bank Stadium on Saturday night after two joint practices earlier in the week.

The Vikings will need to work on finding a new backup quarterback either in free agency or the trade market. There will be others made available and the Vikings need to try and capitalize on that market. Putting either of them out to start a regular season game is a recipe for both disaster and a loss. The best way he was explained to me was by the host of Locked On Vikings Luke Braun. After missing the entire 2021 season with a non-football injury, Twyman has shown the ability to penetrate and get pressure. He is mauling everyone that is put in front of him. Plus, he looks for work when his job is done or he doesn’t have a responsibility. He is destroying tackles consistently with speed, speed-to-power and a nasty spin move. A veteran of the Fangio scheme, he has been in the backfield and laterally moving quickly to stop the run. Some of that is on the quarterbacks, as they are not what you would consider NFL starting-caliber quarterbacks. Not only did McGill get four sacks over the first six quarters, but he blew up a running play on the goal line causing a fumble by pushing the center into the quarterback. Luckily for them, there is talent behind the starting five.

Vikings play it safe in Week 2 preseason loss to the 49ers (The Viking Age)

The Minnesota Vikings rested a large percentage of their team for the second preseason game of the year and couldn't get a win against the 49ers.

This makes six preseason losses in a row for the Minnesota Vikings but they will have a chance to break that streak on Sunday, Aug. The score at the half saw the Vikings leading 7-6 thanks to a Ty Chandler rushing touchdown. He did return to the sidelines after the injury.

San Francisco 49ers 17, Minnesota Vikings 7: No offense. Seriously. (Daily Norseman)

The Vikings' defense got a second fourth-down stop as they forced an incompletion from Niners' third-string quarterback Brock Purdy on a 4th-and-3 from the 34- ...

The Vikings fall to the 49ers in preseason action at U.S. After the offense sputtered, the Niners added to their lead on another field goal by Gould, this one a 28-yarder to make it 17-7 with just over four minutes remaining. San Francisco then took the opening possession of the second half and marched all the way down to the Minnesota 1-yard line. Minnesota put Sean Mannion back in at quarterback to start the fourth quarter because. This one was a 46-yarder and sent the two teams into the locker room at halftime with the Vikings holding a 7-6 lead. The Niners will fly back to the West Coast with a 17-7 victory over the Vikings in their pockets. Sudfeld found running back JaMycal Hasty for a 3-yard touchdown to take the lead back. There was no scoring until nearly midway through the second quarter, as Robbie Gould connected on a 49-yard field goal to make it 3-0. [Minnesota Vikings](https://www.dailynorseman.com/) hosted the [San Francisco 49ers](https://www.ninersnation.com/) in the second preseason game of the year for both teams. That drive ultimately ended with a turnover on downs as rookie cornerback Akayleb Evans made a brilliant stop on 4th-and-1 to end the Niners’ drive. He was ruled out for the game with an ankle injury but it looked much worse when it first happened. Minnesota got the football first and they started their second-team offense, led by Kellen Mond at quarterback.

5 things to know from the Vikings' preseason loss to the 49ers (Sports Illustrated)

The San Francisco 49ers beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-7 Saturday night in preseason action at U.S. Bank Stadium. Here are five things to know, ...

Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison and Kene Nwangwu, the latter two who played before Chandler Saturday night, all seem like locks to make the 53-man roster. went down with an ankle injury in the first half and did not return to the game. What's concerning is that Booth Jr., who slid in the draft because of his injury history, had to be helped off the field and didn't appear able to put any weight on his injured ankle. Chandler led the Vikings with five carries for 19 yards, while adding one catch for three yards. The second-year QB's night ended with another interception on an under-thrown ball into double coverage, again deep in Niners' territory. 49ers vs Vikings: 3 Takeaways at Halftime (Vikings Wire)

After the first half of the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings game, there were three major takeaways.

Wonnum quite a bit for not having a pass rush plan, but he has shown a couple of pass rush moves. Mankato, but also to be a key rotational piece on the defensive line. McGill with two more sacks today, bringing him to 4.0 during the preseason. Unfortunately, he has struggled both catching and holding onto the football. First off, the amount of space between Kinlaw and the other DT should have had Ingram begin the rep more towards the inside, so I believe the protection call should have been better. There were a lot of factors that need to be accounted for. During the preseason, Ihmir Smith-Marsette was the guy that the franchise seemingly wanted to win the job. At pick 59 in the 2022 NFL draft, they might have found their guy. On one rep, he looked head and shoulders better than his contemporaries. The first half left us with some strong takeaways. Second, Mond had plenty of time to throw. He was finding work and looked really powerful.

Backups Take Center Stage As San Francisco 49ers Defeat ... (Forbes)

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers had no interest in playing their starters against the Minnesota Vikings Saturday evening.

We knew that the offensive line was going to be a major question mark heading into the season. It also comes after San Franciscoo surprised many by releasing veteran Darqueze Dennard earlier in the week, setting the stage for Womack to be its top slot guy. He continually bullied reserve Vikings offensive linemen and was a force at the line of scrimmage. Saturday against the Vikings saw him catch just two of four targets for seven yards with two drops. But for now, at least the 49ers were able to get their ground game going. A top-14 pick of the 49ers back in 2020, Kinlaw missed 15 games due to injury over the first two seasons of his career. Young guards Aaron Banks and Spencer Burford were the only 49ers starting offensive linemen to play on Saturday. By alternating Sudfeld and Purdy Saturday evening, San Francisco wanted us to believe that it was an open competition for the QB2 job. “So he’s doing really good at being focused on the small details of his job, which will allow him to be a very dominant player inside for us.” An athletic freak, remaining healthy and showing himself to be consistent will prove to be big for Kinlaw as he enters his third season. With Kinlaw seemingly 100% healthy and in the best shape of his life, things have changed big time heading into the 2022 season. Backup quarterbacks Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy each played two possessions to open the game before alternating drives as the matchup progressed.

"I think across the board [Evans] is such a talented player for us to continue to wrap our arms around and try to develop on a daily basis," O'Connell added. "I wish we would have recovered it, but it will come." "He's worked his way through that throughout camp and then ultimately, what it'll be is just how that thing looks the rest of the week, early on in the week, would love to still get him some work throughout this week as we continue to prep." "I thought that punch-out would have been big, kind of like [Myles] Dorn's hit against the Raiders late last week," O'Connell said. "That's been my mindset my whole time playing football, and that's what a lot of teams liked about me. "When it happened, I was ready for it."

"First year [punt] returning, at the highest level, so I'm getting acclimated to it," Smith-Marsette said.
