Dvalishvili continues to push Aldo back to the cage. Dvalishvili lands a solid punch and keeps the pressure on Aldo. Dvalishvili is still coming forward, and Aldo hasn’t had a chance to breathe. A big knee from Aldo now after they reset, but Dvalishvili is unaffected and again pushes Dvalishili back to the cage. They reset, and Aldo comes out swinging, but Dvalishvili again shoots and forces Aldo to defend. Now a minute or so into the position and Aldo throws his hands up in the air, questioning the strategy of Dvalishvili and he’s clearly unbothered. Dvalishvili now dives in for another takedown and rushes Aldo back to the cage. Aldo lands a nice knee down the middle again. Aldo sticks a jab out and tags Dvalishvili on the chin. Dvalishvili loads up a right hand, and Aldo evades. Aldo now advancing and lands a crushing leg kick. Dvalishvili bouncing and feinting, trying to force a move from Aldo.

Aldo lands a jab and a right to the body. Aldo up against the fence and Dvalishvili landing knees to the thigh. Aldo lands a good knee to the body though and breaks. Dvalishvili tries to muscle down a body lock but Aldo working the whizzer too well. Dvalishvili tries a clinch but Aldo breaks. Dvalishvili pushing the pace and Aldo is back to the fence all the time now. Aldo breaks again and Dvalishvili spams another shot. Aldo lands a combo that gets Dvalishvili backing up. Aldo lands a big right hand and then charges with a jumping knee just before the horn! Dvalishvili tries to break with a hook but eats a shot and stumbles backwards. Dvalishvili barges in and gets a body lock against the fence, now a single, but this is Aldo’s bread and butter. [August 21, 2022] Prior to that, ‘The Machine’ had won six straight bouts by way of decision. The MMA legend had gone 3-2 overall since making the drop to the [promotions](http://www.ufc.com) bantamweight division in 2019.

Dvalishvili is now in prime position for a title shot in a division where his friend and training partner holds the crown.

Still, Aldo collapsed to his back in disbelief upon hearing the scorecards that created a touching moment between fighters as they hugged from their knees. Aldo (31-8) spent all three rounds successfully stuffing Dvalishvili's attempts at bringing the fight to the ground, save for a successful shot late in Round 3 that saw the Brazilian icon bounce right back up to his feet. But he may have created a problem as Dvalishvili inched closer to a potential title shot against teammate and 135-pound champion Aljamain Sterling, who helped corner him for the fight. He made me humble and made me realize how amateur I was. Unfortunately for Aldo, the former featherweight king, his lack of offense failed to match the success he had on defense.

For now, there are quite a few dominoes yet to fall in the division before it becomes a real issue. Getting to the mountaintop could be complicated for him, though. Though Dvalishvili's level of competition has continued to get tougher, Aldo is his most notable win to date. Thus, it was a blue collar win for The Machine. While Dvalishvili was setting the pace for the fight, the King of Rio was firing off counter punches and body kicks. A new contender has emerged in the bantamweight division at UFC 278, and his name is Merab Dvalishvili.

Jab and a right from Aldo. Aldo with a hard knee to the body. Dvalishvili with another right, and a left. Aldo with a wide left to try to create space. Dvalishvili ended up with a unanimous decision, and even a 30-27 score, to derail Aldo’s winning streak. He fought Merab Dvalishvili, looking to continue turning back the clock and extend his impressive winning streak for another crack at the title.

Aldo made a late surge in the closing seconds that included a wicked body shot that drew a smile from Dvalishvili. As for Aldo, it’s the end of his three-fight winning streak and likely the end of his final push to become a UFC champion again.

Dvalishvili is just holding Aldo here and kneeing the thighs. Big left hook from Aldo on the break and Dvalishvili goes right back on the takedown attempt. Nice knee to the body for Aldo and then he lands a second. Aldo is trying to move away here but Dvalishvili is chasing him down. Big combination lands for Aldo and then he lands a big knee. Big low kick from Aldo but he eats a shot from Dvalishvili. Aldo easily defends but he eats a right hand from Dvalishvili. Another takedown attempt from Dvalishvili and again Aldo shrugs him off. Low kick from Dvalishvili starts the striking. Aldo defending well here and breaks but eats a big left from Dvalishvili. Big 1-2 lands for Dvalishvili and Aldo backs up. Dvalishvili light on his feet on the outside and he’s circling here.
