Week 2 of the preseason wasn't sexy for the Minnesota Vikings but there was still a lot to learn from the game against the 49ers.

Vikings-49ers offered little in the way of offense or insight (Sports Illustrated)

Mond's first interception came on a throw about seven yards short of its target and was intercepted easily by a reserve safety named George Odum.

Mannion came back in to operate the offense and made the best pass of the entire preseason, heaving a pass down the middle of the field to a wide open Davidson. He ended the game with a 82 yards on 20 passes and a 21.3 passer rating. The Vikings left a receiver wide, wide, wide open on the conversion and San Fran went up 14-7 with 14 minutes and 57 merciful seconds remaining. Trishton Jackson, an emerging contender for WR6, made an adjustment and snatched a pass out of the air for 17 yards and then he hit back-to-back 7-yard throws to Bisi Johnson and Smith-Marsette. The PA announcer needed a correction to get the receiver right and then somehow there was a timeout before San Francisco went for two. The big screen showed a guy with a half purple and half gold No. stayed down on the field and three trainers came out to meet him. The Vikings got a fourth down stop on the 49ers’ first drive but not before Nate Sudfeld made an impressive throw on a bootleg that was caught right in front of Lewis Cine. Ty Chandler had a nice five-yard run and catch out of the backfield. "I think in the end we're trying to see who can come of the bench and help us win a football game." After a 13-yard Alexander Mattison run (no trade requests, please), the second-year QB got pressured by the 49ers and flung a Brett Favre-level risky pass to the sideline with hopes of delivering a brilliant dime for a touchdown. Mond rolled out on third-and-6 and found receiver Bisi Johnson open across the middle for a 16-yard gain.

Stock up, stock down after 49ers win vs. Vikings (Niners Wire)

Which 49ers players saw their stock go up, and who's stock went down in their preseason win vs. the Vikings.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Mason got more carries in the finale vs. Mason ran it nine times for 57 yards and had a 17-yard run where he made a nice cut and ran through a couple of defenders to give the 49ers a first-and-goal to set up their game-sealing field goal. He was decisive, ran hard, broke tackles and in general looked at least like a player the 49ers should consider keeping on the roster. It’s hard to find a lot of good things to say about the members of the offensive line that played Saturday night. He had a pass breakup and in general played well in the back end against a not-very-good Vikings offense. He had five carries for eight yards, giving him 19 yards on 11 carries in the preseason.

Kinlaw stars on defense as 49ers top Vikings (Fairfield Daily Republic)

MINNEAPOLIS — Javon Kinlaw justifiably drew double-teams as the 49ers' only defensive starter to suit up for Saturday's preseason game.

Vikings: CB Andrew Booth Jr., a second-round rookie, left in the first half with an ankle injury and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Mond finished 10 of 20 for 82 yards and was also picked off on his final throw of the night. “You would have loved to come out of tonight feeling like, ‘Shoot, they both moved the team and scored a lot of points and we’ve got a heck of a hard discussion and conversation ahead as a staff and as an organization,’” O’Connell said of Mond and Mannion. That was a really good feeling.” Sudfeld started and went 13 of 17 for 102 yards in the competition with rookie Brock Purdy to back up starting quarterback Trey Lance. Those starters got a lot of work and a lot of great competitive work. … RB Trey Sermon (ankle) started and had five carries for 8 yards. “Yeah, I was a lot nervous,” Gutiérrez said. … RG Jesse Davis was held out of practice Thursday, wearing a sleeve on his right knee. Tackle Javon Kinlaw was the lone defensive starter, though nickelback Samuel Womack III also played. Rookie Ty Chandler had 19 yards rushing, including a 3-yard TD on an eight-play, 60-yard drive engineered by Mannion. But I like both of those guys and we’ll see how it finishes up.”

It was a simple goal, with Gauld taking a pass from Ranko Veselinovic on the right side of midfield and bending in a left-footed, inswinging cross. Again, some of it depends on the intensity of the innings and just how much he has to work. MacMath made a similar stop of a ferocious volley from Gressel in the 59th. Saban said he has "no problem" with Fisher and the Texas A M coach said he has "great respect" for Saban. James continuing to push for Lakers to land Irving While Pippen is a young point guard looking to find his way in the NBA, he likely won’t play a big role with the Lakers’ parent team this season. "I worked to put that deal together for Brady and Gronk to come to the Raiders, and it was almost a done deal," White said. White said that Brady was "looking for houses and everything" in anticipation of the move out west. Dustin May enjoyed a successful first start back from Tommy John surgery and he was supported by home runs from Will Smith and Justin Turner in the 7-0 win over the Miami Marlins. May walked consecutive Marlins batters on eight straight pitches out of the strike zone in the first inning, then rebounded to retire the last 13 batters he faced. They are concluding their preseason with a match with the The Dodgers scored seven runs in the first three innings -- six on home runs by Will Smith and Justin Turner -- while finishing off a 7-0 victory. Ten months after his surgery, Kinlaw looked disruptive and brought down Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond for a third-down sack in the first quarter of the 49ers' 17-7 win. Clear-cut studs, duds from 49ers preseason win over Vikings (Niner Noise)

It started ugly for the 49ers, offensively, but a 17-7 preseason win over the Vikings showed some promise from the studs who played Saturday night.

On a positive note, San Francisco’s defense is awfully deep, particularly up front with the defensive line rotation. 61 overall pick certainly made his presence known against the Vikings. Later on in the game, and for the second week in a row, Jackson deflected a pass right off the hand of the Minnesota quarterback.

49ers 17 - Vikings 7: Rookie DE Drake Jackson stands out in Niners' preseason win.

Purdy, the last pick in the draft, can be cut and would likely be a Niners’ practice squad player. 5 stays healthy, the Niners have a chance to do something special this year. Here’s another bit of truth: The Niners aren’t winning games with either quarterback. At this weight, 275 pounds, Jackson has the makings of a Pro Bowl-caliber player. I loved the shift defensive end Jordan Willis turned in against the Vikings. The first was Javon Kinlaw, who shined in the interior of the defensive line, demanding double teams and punishing the Vikings when they went one-on-one.

The Vikings play in a dome, so the 49-yarder may seem normal to many, but it’s good to see that one of the highest-paid kickers still has it. The rookie will make some impact plays this year and wouldn’t doubt if he became a starter during the season. At first, I was worried that Drake Jackson was buried with the third-team defensive line, but it’s clear his talent consistently flashes. 5 Numbers That Tell the Story Of the Vikings-49ers Preseason Game (Zone Coverage)

After a week of joint practices, the Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco 49ers took the field on Saturday night at US Bank Stadium for the second week.

[Olabisi Johnson](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/J/JohnOl00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) had a nice return to US Bank stadium. [Garrett Bradbury](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BradGa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) has been the biggest question this offseason regarding the offensive line. He was an absolute wrecking ball on the interior, making life hard for San Francisco’s [Brock Purdy](https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/brock-purdy-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) and [Nate Sudfeld](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SudfNa00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) every time they dropped back to pass. McGill](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/McGiT.00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) impressed fans and players alike, finishing with a game-high five pressures. [Austin Schlottmann](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/S/SchlAu00.htm?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) also stood out this week, allowing no pressures on 25 pass-blocking snaps. [Irv Smith](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=SmitIr01,SmitIr00&search=Irv+Smith&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) Jr. Mond ended his night by throwing an interception to a double-covered Nailor, practically telegraphing his intentions to the safety by staying glued to that one read. But Reed has struggled to find consistency on his snaps and has also been dealing with an elbow injury. If Schlottmann can continue to look competent at his position, he could find himself a roster spot competing with Last year’s fifth-round pick, [Zach Davidson](https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/search/search.fcgi?pid=zach-davidson-2,zach-davidson-1&search=Zach+Davidson&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-), didn’t help his case. “He’s one of those guys that flashed to me,” said O’Connell, who also referenced the plays that didn’t show up on the stat sheet. However, that quickly faded once fans saw the list of players on both sides who would not be playing in the game.

Very strong day from the 49ers specialist group, and I also have to give a quick nod to long snapper Taybor Pepper for his role in the success of the special teams unit in Minnesota. The 49ers have a pair of guys who both fit that mold. Besides a mishap near the goal line by Purdy, I thought the pair of quarterbacks did what they needed to in this game. These are the kind of plays Kinlaw is capable of, and they are going to come in greater numbers the more comfortable he gets in his role going forward. Kinlaw is a special player, and there is a reason why the 49ers drafted him where they did. Jackson has the ability to develop into an above-average starter in this league, and that might come much sooner than expected. Whatever the reason was, it’s not good enough to justify Jackson falling into the 49ers' lap, where they already had an embarrassment of riches on the deepest defensive line in the league. My take with Kinlaw has always been that he will have a rapid ascent once he gets more reps in the league and can improve on things like hand placement, pad level, etc. Kinlaw is a player who has immense physical talent and has leaned heavily on those athletic traits early on in his NFL career. I don’t like their odds of stashing a player like Mason on the practice squad either. missed his second consecutive preseason game but also is a player who provides the 49ers with a strong veteran presence at the position, something that is coveted by Kyle Shanahan. JaMycal Hasty had a receiving touchdown as well, running an excellent choice route out of the backfield to beat the linebacker in coverage.
