– Amari Rodgers has value as a gadget player, but he’s been disappointing as a pure receiver in the passing game. He’ll have a great chance of sticking on the practice squad as the No. Etling flashed his impressive speed with a 51-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Accuracy was a little off on a few missed chances. This was a big-time performance from the third-year quarterback. He played decisively, protected the ball and made a handful of big-time throws.

Live Updates: Packers vs. Saints in NFL Preseason (Sports Illustrated)

The Green Bay Packers are hosting the New Orleans Saints in an NFL preseason game at Lambeau Field on Friday night. Follow along all night for updates.

Friday Night Spotlight: A huge battle is brewing to be the third, fourth and fifth outside linebackers on the roster. Holding on the first play moved the Saints back and helped the Packers limit the damage. Friday Night Spotlight: With the return of Robert Tonyan and the release of Dominique Dafney, the Packers have a four-man group of Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis. Will the Packers keep six? [Claimed off waivers this week](https://www.si.com/nfl/packers/news/packers-claim-fulgham-for-second-time), new receiver Travis Fulgham is wearing No. It’s so great for Tariq (Carpenter) to come in and have (Darnell) Savage and Smash (Adrian Amos). The big play came on the kickoff following a Packers field goal, with Kirk Merritt returning the kickoff 59 yards to Green Bay’s 43. He had back-to-back runs for 9 yards, a 10-yard catch and a 15-yard run to the 4 to set up the score. The Saints took advantage of Tyler Davis’ fumble to score late in the half. Holding by Kingsley Enagbare on the return forced the Packers to start the drive at their 2. He had an 80-yard punt to start the second half and a 65-yard punt midway through the third quarter. The scrambling ability of Saints quarterback Ian Book gave them a chance to make a game of it.

4 Saints position battles heating up in Packers preseason game (Saints Wire)

Chase Hansen, Justin Evans, and Dai'Jean Dixon are just a few players to watch as position battles heat up in Friday's Saints-Packers game.

He was everywhere it seemed on defense and looked like one of the best options when it comes to defensive back depth. The New Orleans native and Nicholls alum rookie Dai’Jean Dixon led the team in receptions during the first game and could certainly use another solid showing to try and get to the final roster this week. He had a very solid play adjusting and coming back to catch a ball from Ian Book for a 17 yard catch on 3rd and 13. Smith did have a lost fumble, but he also led the team in total yards AND yards per carry. The Saints linebacker corps has a log jam and a huge battle between a lot of players in that have not established themselves yet in the NFL. The assumed leader for the third running back role Dwayne Washington also had a fumble, but did recover it.

The New Orleans Saints came up short against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, losing their second preseason game by a final score of 20-10.

0 It will be interesting to see if we see more starters like Jameis Winston, Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry at least early on in the matchup. Olave also led the Saints in receiving yards with 28, he finished as the second-leading receiver of the game with that mark. Olave had a strong practice week going into this game and capitalizing on it with the touchdown catch from a scrambling Book is a great punctuation. Still, we learned a lot with many position battles playing out in each phase of the game on offense, defense, and special teams. There weren’t many minutes played by the starters, with second-year quarterback Ian Book leading the offense for most of the evening without his best playmakers in the lineup.

He ended up making the next one from the same distance. He did have a tough rep late in the game, but that's part of the learning process. He looked dominant on a running play, shoving him to the ground, and then on the next play, he allowed a pressure on Book. Malcolm Roach had a costly roughing the passer penalty on a play that would have ended in a punt, and the Packers ended up making them pay by marching down the length of the field for a touchdown. He picked up the blitz, and did so with authority. CHRIS OLAVE: Whether you chalk this up to busted coverage or ad-libbing, it was good to see Chris Olave slipping behind the Packers defense to get the team's first touchdown. Ian Book was having a promising drive later in the second quarter, until he didn't. It was the second straight week he had a fumbled exchange under center, which was recovered by the Packers defense for a good return.

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers sat out Friday's game, and his primary backup, Jordan Love, completed just 12 of his 24 attempts for 113 yards while playing into the fourth quarter. After Further Review: Saints updated roster projection (FOX 8 Live WVUE)

Here's my latest roster projection. Quarterback (2). Jameis Winston. Andy Dalton. There really is no need to keep three quarterbacks on this roster presently.

This week was the first week it felt like Mathieu and Maye’s chemistry might be coming together. Safety (5) Cornerback (5) This group feels the least settled. Keeping these four as the team’s defensive tackles. Hopefully that can happen this season. Defensive End (5) Hopefully the players that are banged up can return soon. Injuries have hit this group which could impact the numbers here. With a better week to close out camp/preseason, maybe Krull can close the gap. They still have some time to shine, and at the very least they’ll be very tough cuts. Given how the tight the numbers are at other positions, the Saints could use the roster spot.

Saints Quotes Following the Packers Game (Sports Illustrated)

Quotes from Dennis Allen and several Saints players following the preseason loss to the Packers.

Yeah, it feels good to be in a groove and hopefully that only continues into the season." But for me, that was just really working the technique and getting up on the tackle and then just driving. So, at the end of the day, I'm learning a lot and just trying to get better every day." Still trying to get all my pass pro stuff down, and there's a lot of stuff in the run game to still, trying to feel out the tackle position really. ON HOW HE PLAYED FRIDAY AND SELF-ASSESSMENT: "Just working, being where you're supposed to be and working the technique. Obviously, defensively we take the ball away there at the end of the first half, create a forced fumble and end up getting a touchdown to end the first half. Obviously, it's not going to work for everybody, but trying to pick and choose and say 'Okay, well, you know, that worked very well and try it out and then you know, you give it a shot, and it's like, oh, I really liked that. But, we were a big run down, run the ball team, so didn't get a whole lot of pass pro experience. So, a lot of drop back passing is not necessarily what I've been used to, so just trying to fine tune all that stuff and continue to grow in that area." Turned the ball over, and we let them run the ball on us, and you can't do that and expect to win. It's disappointing to see that we turned the ball over again for the second straight week. There were plenty of good moments, but obviously more bad ones that led to the team losing to the Packers 20-10.

Game recap: 5 takeaways from Packers' preseason win over Saints (Packers.com)

GREEN BAY – The Packers evened their 2022 preseason record at 1-1 with a 20-10 triumph over the New Orleans Saints on Friday night at Lambeau Field.

[Isaiah McDuffie](/team/players-roster/isaiah-mcduffie/) continued his strong second training camp with some impressive pursuit, and fellow inside linebacker [Ray Wilborn](/team/players-roster/ray-wilborn/) led the defense in tackles with seven. [Samori Toure](/team/players-roster/samori-toure/) and a bullet over the middle to [Amari Rodgers](/team/players-roster/amari-rodgers/) – that weren't completed. Now there may be another entrant on the rise in Abernathy, who went undrafted three years ago and has spent time in the XFL and USFL. "A lot of it with our third running back is going to come down to how they do on special teams," he said. He finished with 42 yards on 10 carries with LaFleur complimenting his "burst" after the game. "I think it just comes from being comfortable with the offense, understanding where the receiver's going to be, what plays are good versus certain coverages. "It's not going to be perfect," LaFleur said. There are always some snaps he'd like to do over – the aforementioned Deguara throw, and two pass plays in scoring territory after safety "He stood in the pocket and was throwing on rhythm. "I know the numbers don't necessarily reflect probably how I feel," Head Coach Matt LaFleur said. Playing into the fourth quarter, Love finished 12-of-24 for 113 yards with the TD, no interceptions and a 77.3 rating, plus three runs for 13 yards, including an 11-yard scramble on the game's first play. But then Love came back to direct an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 4-yard jump ball to Doubs that put the Packers up for good at 10-3.

Six Positive Performances from Packers-Saints (Sports Illustrated)

Jordan Love, Tyler Goodson and Micah Abernathy were among the standouts for the Green Bay Packers against the New Orleans Saints on Friday.

“And I think it’s a great lesson that I know I learned as a young coach that a lot of times when an individual comes in and struggles, a lot of times you’re like, ‘Oh, God, he can’t (play).’ It takes some guys a little bit longer.” On Green Bay’s first touchdown drive, he had two runs of 9 yards, the catch for 10 and another run for 15. "I thought the ball he threw to Doubs that was a 20-something-yard completion on our sideline, I thought that was a tough read and the outermost receiver wasn’t really quite out of the area yet, so it was a cloudy read. “I feel like I showed that I could play fast and I feel like I have a lot left in me,” he said. And then on the keeper that he threw to Samori down the sidelines, that ball has to be caught. I saw a guy that was not only making some off-schedule plays, running around, there were a couple of times we weren’t great in protection and he stood in the pocket and was throwing on rhythm. Or will be thrown back in at left guard or given a shot at right guard to see if he can outperform returning starters Runyan and Royce Newman? “As you guys know, the big jump from college to the National Football League is usually in pass pro for these guys. “Especially if Zach doesn’t end up starting, he’s going to have to be in that role of backup tackle, guard, whatever it is,” offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said on Thursday. For most of camp, he’s at least been in the first-team mix at right tackle. Love’s stat line was as dreary as the weather for a big chunk of the game. Still, it was a veteran move to not try to make something out of nothing.

If Ahmed continues to impress, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Packers add him to the practice squad as insurance in case Crosby struggles again this season. On top of that, he also bailed out the special teams unit by making a massive stop on a kick return. That way, if they do end up not being able to suit up, the team may feel more comfortable with Tom manning the right side of the offensive line against We didn’t see too many starters again, but seeing the depth of this team perform well and get a win at home was encouraging.

Jordan Love showing he's 'light years ahead' of last season in ... (packersnews.com)

'I see a much more decisive player out there,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of his backup quarterback.

It’s only in the first year throwing to him, and Aaron as well throwing to him, but I think he’s been making a lot of really good plays. Love made several plays that didn’t show up in the box score, including a 17-yard completion to Doubs in the first half that was erased because of a holding penalty. “It was one of those ones where I had pressure in my face,” Love said, “and I kind of just trusted where he was going to be. “I don’t know how you guys see it,” LaFleur said, “but the way I see it – and see it on a daily basis – I think he’s light years ahead of where he was a year ago. He floated a pass toward the right sideline on a fade route to Doubs, who correctly turned inside for the football. He missed a handful of throws, most glaring a shallow out route to wide-open tight end Josiah Deguara inside the 10-yard line. That isn’t a fair standard for Love, or almost any quarterback in the NFL, and it isn’t what the Packers need this fall from their 2020 first-round pick. “He was decisive,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said, “and I think that’s the big thing from him. If he isn’t ready to be a full-time starter, Love is showing he can manage a team with a loaded defense and vaunted run game – the type of squad general manager Brian Gutekunst constructed. That internal clock, the one that screams for a quarterback to get out of Dodge, is a tricky thing to master. “I thought there was a lot of good,” LaFleur said. So when Love didn’t linger inside the pocket, tucking to pick up 11 yards up the middle, it was exactly the type of decision the Packers have waited for their young quarterback to make.

Saints QB Ian Book has highs, lows in full game vs. Packers. 'I'll be ... (NOLA.com)

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Ian Book is well aware that his preseason performance doubles as a team tryout.

“I want to be out there and be tough,” Book said. “There was a great throw at the end of the first half to Olave. “There’s no excuse for it,” Book said. “I thought there was a couple of good throws,” Allen said. The Saints have one more exhibition — or audition, like in Book’s case — left at 7 p.m. “Really, the main thing for me was I want to go out there and just compete,” Book said. Book played every offensive down for the Saints in Friday’s 20-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The sole passing score came on a 20-yard shot to wide receiver Chris Olave, the Saints' No. He kept the ball seven times and picked up 49 yards on the ground. Of his 28 throws, Book connected on 16 for 113 yards and a touchdown. “Like I wanted to leave it all out there. The New Orleans Saints already have their starting quarterback in Jameis Winston once he’s recovered from a sprained right foot.

Five Disappointing Performances from Packers-Saints (Sports Illustrated)

With two turnovers in as many weeks, is Tyler Davis playing himself off the roster? Plus the adventures of Amari Rodgers and more from Friday's preseason ...

So, I think if you asked our guys in that locker room, every one of them would tell you they’ve got a lot of confidence in him, and I think we would all agree in that locker room, he’s one of the most improved guys over the last year.” But that’s on the coaches to prevent. I don’t know how you guys see it, but the way I see it and seeing it on a daily basis, I think he’s light-years ahead of where he was a year ago. So, the battle to be that No. But it’s not exactly ideal to have a first-round pick buried on the depth chart, either. It’s just that nobody jumped to the forefront. PFF credited Enagbare with a team-high four pressures, including one in which he ducked under the right tackle to flush Ian Book from the pocket. And in 16 pass-rushing snaps, he never got within a country mile of the quarterback. He failed to hang onto the ball on what would have been an 18-yard catch on third-and-5 late in the third quarter. It’s hard to be patient sometimes with those guys to get to the other side of it, but I think if you do – you know he was a quarterback that turned wide receiver that turned tight end. While he’s made leaps-and-bounds improvement as a returner, he inexplicably tried to pick up a bouncing ball near the goal line on an 81-yard bomb by Saints punter Blake Gillikin; he was fortunate that he didn’t touch it. And with Tonyan coming off a torn ACL and perhaps not ready for 40 snaps per game, Davis is the only player capable of filling that particular niche in the offense.
