The Rams’ defense did a nice job limiting Houston’s first-string offense in the first half, limiting the Texans to only seven points before halftime, which was encouraging because some of the players on the field for Los Angeles will contribute defensively this season. In Week 2 of the preseason on Friday night, the Rams struggled to get anything going offensively, mustering only 277 yards with several sloppy plays – including a fumble by John Wolford and a dropped handoff by A.J. The Rams offense didn’t have much trouble moving the ball against the Chargers last week, but the Texans defense proved to be a tougher test for Los Angeles’ backups.

NFL preseason: Five takeaways from Rams' loss to Texans (Los Angeles Times)

Rams coach Sean McVay's decision to play John Wolford in the first half and Bryce Perkins in the second introduced a dose of QB intrigue vs. Texans.

His 36-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in the second quarter increased the lead to 6-0. His second kickoff resulted in a touchback. The play set up a field goal. Defensive lineman Jonah Williams had a sack and forced a fumble. Or was it a move to give Perkins a shot at a fair comparison for the role as Stafford’s backup? “Overall, I felt like he had good command, made good decisions, saw the coverages the right way,” McVay said. On Friday, he kicked a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter to give the Rams a 3-0 lead. He had a 29-yard catch in the first quarter, a 22-yard reception in the second and finished with five catches for 96 yards. But on the first play of his second possession, he slipped a tackle in the backfield and completed a 14-yard pass to tight end Roger Carter Jr. “And then there were some instances where we could help him out a little bit more. [Coach Sean McVay](https://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/story/2022-08-09/rams-coach-sean-mcvay-reveals-new-contract)’s decision to play Wolford in the first half and [Bryce Perkins](https://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/story/2021-08-13/rams-quarterback-perkins-came-a-long-way-to-get-his-chance-in-preseason-opener) in the second introduced a dose of quarterback intrigue. It marked Wolford’s first extended playing time since 2020, when he started the season finale against the Arizona Cardinals, and then started and played most of the first quarter in a wild-card playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks.

This leaves Russ Yeast with a mountain to climb over to reach the roster but he’s not finished yet either. Andrew Whitworth made a point to say that his former teammates are enamored with the competitive spirit and energy of Decobie Durant. We haven’t seen any of Long or Troy Hill in the preseason, but we’ve gotten a long look at Robert Rochell, Derion Kendrick, and Cobie Durant and they’ve all had their moments, including on Friday night. He was composed when trailing late in the game and finished with a high efficiency rating. Evans had a penalty and did not appear to make a strong bid to stay on the 53-man roster based on first look. Kier Thomas also got some love and added pressure and would be a great player to get onto the practice squad. Harris caught the first pass of the game, an 8-yard gain and finished with three catches. Jackson, Tremayne Anchrum, Jeremiah Kolone, Logan Bruss, and Bobby Evans was the starting five, with much of the pressure coming up the middle. But Houston third stringer Jeff Driskel led the Texans on an 82-yard drive to answer, ending in a touchdown pass tight end Mason Schreck to take a 24-20 lead. That was the question that maybe the Los Aneles Rams needed an answer for more than they needed to beat the Texans in the second preseason game of the year and Sean McVay should feel comfortable with Wolford as Stafford’s backup. Many of Houston’s starters on Friday night are expected to start during the regular season and it showed against L.A.’s backup offensive line. Wolford finished 14-of-22 for 142 yards, playing the entire first half and getting sacked five times while being under pressure for many of his pass attempts.

Wolford just flat-out dropped the ball after taking the snap on first-and-10, which set the Rams up with second-and-15, ultimately leading to a punt. He had very little time in the pocket, Landen Akers dropped a pass that would’ve gone for a nice gain and the rushing attack got nothing going to complement him. Durant forced a fumble on the opening drive, recorded a sack on the Texans’ second possession and nearly pulled in an interception during Houston’s final drive of the first half. That just didn’t happen on Friday night when the Rams hosted the Texans, a game they lost 24-20.

Houston finished tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for fifth-fewest sacks last season. On the opening drive, Rams quarterback John Wolford elected to throw away from his direction. Los Angeles Rams preseason: Stock Up, Stock Down after loss to ... (Turf Show Times)

Another night for Lance McCutcheon, a struggle for the backup offensive line.

Williams was a star on the defensive line, showing up in both the run and pass game. With his performance on Friday, Williams showed why he deserves a roster spot and a place in the defensive line rotation. It was Hopkins who drew Von Bell down on Matthew Stafford’s no-look pass in the Hopkins should have a larger, more consistent role in the offense this season. The young safety came up with two plays on third down - one of which was an open-field tackle on Rex Burkhead and the other a pass breakup to force a punt on 3rd-and-9. After being on the end of a communication breakdown in the secondary, Terrell Burgess bounced back on Friday night. Decobie Durant should have had an interception in the first half, but did finish the night with a sack. Last season, Perkins joined the Rams as a raw player, but has developed nicely over the last year. In the second half, Duron Lowe shined. The Rams offensive line allowed six sacks on Friday night which isn’t a great number at first glance. However, when it comes to the preseason, it’s less about the final score and more about how the players perform on the field as they compete for places on the 53-man roster. There are times when it looks like he doesn’t belong on the same field as a lot of guys who might make the opposing teams’ practice squad.

Los Angeles Rams guard Logan Bruss had a difficult night on Friday against the Houston Texans, but news only got worse as the game went on.

This should increase Chris Garrett and Keir Thomas’s bids for the roster. The Rams are starting Coleman Shelton at right guard and Bruss may not have even won the backup job headed into the season, with an expected “redshirt” year for 2022. Bruss left with a knee injury and Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed on Saturday that the rookie third round pick out of Wisconsin tore both his ACL and MCL against the Texans.
