The Morning After: Patriots vs Panthers key takeaways (Patriots Wire)

Here's a deep dive into the key takeaways from the New England Patriots' preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday night.

The real cause for concern is the depth on the line, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a late camp move to sure up some zone blocking depth. Regardless, I am not worried with the offense as a whole, just the way the blocks are coming together. In both pass protection and the run game, he looked like a starting offensive lineman, and in year one, that’s all you need from your first-round lineman, as year two is where the real leap is. Although he may not make the roster this year, he has a chance at being here next season, while he gets some much extremely valuable insights from a Hall of Famer in Slater. Cole Strange was what many deemed a reach in the draft, but I actually had him as one of the best interior offensive lineman in the entire draft due to his athleticism and fit for a zone blocking scheme. It also helps to have two blazing fast wideouts like Tyquan Thornton and Nelson Agholor, along with a solid contested deep threat in DeVante Parker. Anytime you have that much athleticism and good coaching, there isn’t really a way to beat that system. This offseason, New England made it a goal to modernize their entire system on both offense (with the new zone blocking, Shanahan-ish scheme) and defense. Mack Wilson was highly-touted out of Alabama as a speedy, smaller linebacker, more aligned with the modern game. I think he held up fairly well last night and played a huge chunk of time. The first move was relying on redshirted Cam McGrone and Raekwon McMillan, who were both injured all last season. Last season, I started an Instagram series called “The Morning After,” where I gave my key takeaways the following morning of the most recent game for the New England Patriots.

The New England Patriots are in the win column, topping the Carolina Panthers 20-10 in their second preseason game of the year. Mac Jones played three total ...

In the turnover department, Joshuah Bledsoe forced a fumble while Shaun Wade and Brenden Schooler hauled in interceptions. He was also the intended receiver on Zappe’s pick-six and he did not appear to be fully expecting the ball to come his way. DaMarcus Mitchell recorded a sack and forced fumble in the closing minutes which Sam Roberts recovered for a touchdown. Montgomery was on the field throughout their first scoring drive, finding pay dirt himself and making the most of several touches. He hauled in five receptions for a team-high 71 yards, continuing to feast up the seam and in the middle of the field. It was not a perfect pass and there was some content, but it was a ball a player fighting for a roster spot would prefer to come down with. Ronnie Perkins recorded a sack and had a strong pursuit against Matt Corral early in the fourth quarter. A few plays later he rallied to the ball and helped Terrance Mitchell stop Rashard Higgins short of the sticks on third-down. He showcased his athleticism Friday night recording six tackles and making life difficult for Carolina pass-catchers out of the backfield. Ferentz still seems primed for the Ted Karras-role with his versatility across the offensive line, but it was a rough week. Humphrey has come on strong of late and has gained traction towards a 53-man roster spot. Mac Jones played three total series as a handful of other Patriot regulars played deep in the contest.

Patriots vs. Panthers: Pats defense dominates in preseason win (NBC Sports Boston)

The defense looked sharp, Mac Jones engineered a touchdown drive and the Patriots finished a week with Carolina with a 20-10 win over the Panthers.

At this point, Humphrey has stated his case for a spot on the active roster. Bill Belichick was in midseason form as he challenged the ruling on the field of an incompletion and had it overturned. It was a dominant performance from start to finish as Ja'Whaun Bentley got the party started with a tackle in the backfield. In the fourth quarter, Humphrey made his presence felt again, this time on special teams. The 23-year-old is only making it more difficult for Belichick to narrow down his cornerback depth chart. The highlight of Agholor's night was a 45-yard reception on a perfect throw from Mac Jones. In contrast to Bourne, the 29-year-old has had a strong camp and carried it over into Friday's game. It's been a rough summer for Patriots wideout Kendrick Bourne, to say the least. The second-year quarterback completed four of his eight passes for 61 yards and was sacked once before being replaced by Brian Hoyer in the middle of the second quarter. This time, the keys to the Patriots' offense appeared to belong solely to Patricia. They're now 1-1 in the preseason and will look to finish on a high note when they visit the Las Vegas Raiders next week. Rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe took the majority of the snaps, completing 16 of 25 passes for 173 yards and an interception.

17 Fan Notes from the Patriots' preseason win over the Panthers (Pats Pulpit)

Once again, this isn't real football, so not too much to take away from this one. The good news is that we can glean a little more from this game, from a ...

This was a pretty solid game overall; provided the Thornton injury isn’t too serious (and I don’t think it is), there’s a lot of good tape on some key players, and the starting offense started to click just a little bit. There are a lot of talented wide receivers, running backs, and DBs all fighting for very few roster spots, and at this stage I have no idea who is going to be on the outside looking in. Still a long way to go, but you’re looking for steady strides forward, and we for sure got that with Zappe. But it’s late on a Friday and I’m tired. There’s 100 percent a spot for him on the roster, and he’s listed officially as a receiver... - It’s preseason, so I’m going to go ahead and make an absolutely ridiculous and nonsensical criticism of Mac Jones: I wish he didn’t run off the field on fourth down so quickly. but at this point I can legit see him lining up as a tight end on Jumbo packages as some kind of dummy outlet. I mean he gets sacked, gets up, and then just jogs on back to the sideline. - Everyone is expecting the deep ball to factor more into the offense this year, with Nelson Agholor getting a full year in the system and rookie Tyquan Thornton offering the speed factor, so it was great to see that 45-yard bomb to set up New England’s first score. - That said, everyone seems to be banging up their shoulders this month and getting sidelined. Given that it’s late August, I’m inclined to believe the latter. That’s a lot to ask of a second year player.
