The New Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Transformations Explained (/FILM)

"Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" is an entertaining film that seems to serve one singular purpose: to give fan favorites Gohan and Piccolo some much-needed strength. Throughout "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero," there is the looming threat of the Red Ribbon Army's resurrection of the Android known as Cell, the creation of Dr. In "Super Hero, " Piccolo becomes frustrated with Gohan's complacency and tries to push him to grow stronger throughout the film. "Super Hero" features the return of one of the oldest "Dragon Ball" evil organizations, The Red Ribbon Army, and two new and deadly superhero androids. At one point in the "Dragon Ball Z" story, Gohan took center stage and grew in power at a young age, nearly surpassing his father. In "Super Hero," Dr. "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" seeks to make amends with the two Z fighters pushed to the wayside. Gohan's potential has always been the talk of the "Dragon Ball" fandom. Speaking of the final antagonist, it's an old fan-favorite "Dragon Ball Z" villain that no one saw coming. The film takes an unexpected route, focusing on characters that have taken a backseat in recent years in the "Dragon Ball Super" anime and manga. The Namekian spends his days during the "Dragon Ball: Super" timeline, training himself and Gohan's daughter, Pan. [Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero](https://www.slashfilm.com/938107/dragon-ball-super-super-hero-5-things-we-learned-from-the-comic-con-panel/)" has finally made its way into North American theaters, serving as a followup to "Dragon Ball Super: Broly," released in 2018.

The battles in “Dragon Ball” have always been drawn and staged with thrilling gusto. But for this critic, who has been following “Dragon Ball” diligently since his teenage years, the fan service only added to the esoteric charm. The “Dragon Ball” formula is repetitive and predictable.

'Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero' review: Why Piccolo is best dad (Los Angeles Times)

But besides a mostly inconsequential [scene](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-dragon-ball-z-battle-gods-review-20140808-story.html) of [cameos](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-dragon-ball-super-broly-review-20190116-story.html), even a casual fan who has watched only through “Dragon Ball Z” — the second “Dragon Ball” anime series, which started airing in the U.S. As the title suggests, “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” engages a bit with questions of what it actually means to be a hero beyond flashy poses and comic sound effects. It also touches on timely themes involving the powers of misinformation and lies to cast heroes as villains (and vice versa) in order to manipulate others. It’s a nuance that’s touched on in the exposition-heavy introduction of the film but best understood by those who are familiar with the “Dragon Ball” franchise, which launched with Toriyama’s manga series in 1984. In between training, various tournaments and battles over the fate of the universe, Goku has made friends and enemies, gotten married and had a couple of kids (who, unlike their father, have interests outside of becoming the most powerful warrior to ever live). One of Japan’s biggest pop media franchises, “Dragon Ball” is synonymous with explosive brawls and over-the-top action sequences, with dashes of comedy providing levity in between.

How 'Dragon Ball Super' Became This Weekend's Widest Release (IndieWire)

Idris Elba fights a lion this weekend, while a Japanese anime gets 4000 screens.

The Covid-impacted “Demon Train” grossed $44 million in Japan; “Super Hero” did $18 million. Less predictable is “Dragon Ball.” Between the lack of product and exhibitors willing to play niche films that have a shot, the anime will open in just under over 3,100 theaters, nearly 4,000 screens. The similar “The Meg” opened mid-August 2018, with the marine predator film doing $45 million its first weekend. “Beast,” with a $38 million budget, international appeal, and like all Universal titles eligible for early PVOD release, should be #2 for the weekend. “Beast” could see $10 million-$12 million, but the weekend’s likely victor is “Dragon Ball” with $20 million. This week, Cineworld, the London-based owner of #2 domestic circuit Regal Theaters, released a grim near-term assessment of their financial situation: “Lower levels of admissions are due to a limited film slate that is anticipated to continue until November 2022 and are expected to negatively impact trading and the group’s liquidity position in the near term.”

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero isn’t afraid to let go of brainless action in favor of developing its own plot and spending quiet time with some fan favorites. One of the most famous criticisms of the Dragon Ball anime saga is the length of most of its battles, and not only those lengthy fights are practically non-existent in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, they are cleverly nodded at as a group of people watch Goku and Vegeta fight. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is also clever in grounding its characters, despite the universe where they live in: You really feel for Gohan when he admits he has neglected his training because he's finally gotten a stretch of time to study. When the battles start coming to an end, it all comes down to transformation and finding new strength, which has definitely been done countless times throughout Dragon Ball history. Not only that, the fights feature some interesting attention to detail: Notice, for example, how you can hear the somewhat discreet sound of metal being hit whenever Gamma 1 or Gamma 2 are in a fight. If you had or were a child during the late 90s and early 00s, you’re bound to have seen Son Goku and his super saiyan friends and family pop up on one of your screens.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Cast on Gohan's Big Comeback and ... (Comicbook.com)

The time has almost come! The U.S. release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is upon us, and the fans are ready to see what the flick has to offer.

The pair are brothers, so I want to ask what it was like developing this bond for fans? I came in and was hoping to get to do a really big scream. I mean, this is the time to do it. Anytime I had to do a big scream, I could like hear him clenching up on the other side of the glass. Obviously, he's very smart and all of that, so he's very a three-dimensional character, but to bring it full circle to what he was in the Cell saga and everything? The yelling is kind of a trait of the show. The world has seen what happened to Gohan as he trained and that all was going to go somewhere but then it all took a left turn as Gohan became very different. I think it's just a little closer to home, you know? Question: To Zeno and Aleks, you both are no strangers to being in high-profile anime series. And of course, the stars are just as ready for Gohan to take control of the series as fans are. After spending a few years out of the spotlight, the anime is eager to take its rightful place in theaters. Crunchyroll Expo brought out Kyle Herbert (Gohan), Zeno Robinson (Gamma 2), and Aleks Le (Gamma 1) to hype Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero at the soldout event.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Movie Ending Explained - IGN (IGN)

The new movie is a direct sequel to the Broly film that was released initially in 2018, and draws focus away from Goku and Vegeta in favor of Gohan and Piccolo.

Could there be a new series on the horizon, or does the future of the series lie in more movies? We have Cheelai, Lemo, and Broly in the last movie and now Dr. First off, Cell Max doesn’t seem to have the ability to absorb others which caused a lot of concern back in DBZ, as fans remember. We find him at the end looking to turn himself in after the chaotic events of the final battle. So far, we got ex-villains joining the good guys in back to back movies. The new movie is a direct sequel to the Broly film that was released initially in 2018, and draws focus away from Goku and Vegeta in favor of Gohan and Piccolo. kinda – in the form of Cell Max. This Cell is very different though in a lot of ways. The most hype moment of the movie is arguably seeing Gohan Beast for the first time. Piccolo visited Dende in hopes of further unlocking his potential but suggested using the Dragon Balls instead because of course they can. Just before the change, you can see the symbol of the Namekian Pride glow on his back. Considering how much of the Dragon Ball Super series has revolved around Goku, Vegeta, and the tournament of power, everyone else stays out of the spotlight for the most part.

Does Cell return in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero? (The Digital Fix)

Warning Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero spoilers ahead! Dragon Ball Super has gotten quite the reputation for bringing back some of the most fearsome Dragon ...

Warning Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero spoilers ahead! Magenta ignored Dr Hedo’s warnings and released Cell Max early after the Gammas were destroyed. First of all, it’s worth pointing out that this new Cell isn’t the one who arranged the Cell Games and got atomised by Super Saiyan 2 Gohan. The bio-android remains incredibly popular despite having been dead for decades, and there were plenty of teases that the new anime movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero would bring him back. This monstrous creature was supposed to be an improvement on Dr Gero’s design, but things didn’t go to plan. This is how Cell returned in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero ending and post-credits scene ... (The Digital Fix)

We break down the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero ending to tell you exactly what goes down for Gohan and Piccolo's long-awaited anime movie.

In other words, the Z Fighters are now back in business, with Goten, Trunks, Piccolo, Pan, and Gamma 1, with Gohan and Android 18 in the wings. What happens at the end of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero? Absolutely wrecked from their ongoing sparring session that can only end when one or the other can’t get up, Goku admits defeat. The only problem is he’s not actually any stronger, it’s all a scare tactic. Dr Hedo and Gamma are remorseful for their actions, and it’s decided they should work for Capsule Corp. Goten, Trunks, and Android 18 join in as well, because they really do need all the help they can get. While struggling to ascend beyond Super Saiyan 2, Gohan thinks of his daughter Pan, and powers up to heights heretofore unknown. In a last ditch effort to stop the Z Fighters, Magenta initiates the opening sequence for the new Cell’s pod. There’s lots of it, and our Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero ending explained gets right into. Picollo and Gohan regroup with the Gammas, all switching their attention to this new foe. Cue a lot of fighting typical of Dragon Ball, with heroes and their opponents alike zipping around at impossible speeds and throwing energy beams at each. Move Goku and Vegeta, this time Gohan and Piccolo are in the spotlight.

Piccolo and Gohan have always been fan favourites, and to see them given more attention while the wider cast still has so much to do with their own respective stories is incredible to see. He is powerful and capable of so much, but it takes a character like Piccolo to help pick apart his more sensitive flaws to emerge victorious. Given the arcs that Super Hero is liberally seeking to recreate, you won’t be surprised to learn that a new vision of Cell is also waiting in the wings. But even for a lapsed fan like me who has only engaged with Dragon Ball on the periphery, Super Hero remains an explosive, emotional, and downright ambitious experience to behold. All of them put their collective talents together to create Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 - two new androids with the purpose of taking revenge on our heroes and pitching themselves as illustrious heroes in the public eye. Small yet essential elements of the series’ backstory are explained before we’re thrown into the deep end, with Super Hero intended to be both a nostalgic callback and stylish modernisation of Dragon Ball’s Red Ribbon Army Saga and Dragon Ball Z’s Android Saga.

Piccolo Finally Gets His Day in the Sun in Underwhelming but Fun ... (Paste Magazine)

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero changes up its animation style to mixed success, but uses its familiarity to its advantage.

Now the look of Dragon Ball is changing, and Super Hero represents its growing pains. Much of it is thrown away for gags, speaking directly to a fanbase that’s seen it all so many times over the course of multiple shows and 21 movies that none of it holds much narrative power. But Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was never going to be about its villains. Piccolo even gets a transformation to rival his Saiyan counterparts, though “Orange Piccolo” is about as underwhelming as its name. [memoir](https://newsletters.theatlantic.com/humans-being/61aa470f6b474500201575c6/piccolo-is-black/) notes the character’s codedness in its title) to read the alien as compelling representation, he also stands as a bastion of seriousness and responsibility in a world where the child-brained Goku runs the show. But it’s still refreshing to have him, rather than usual leads Goku and Vegeta, at the core of a story—even if the pair’s prominence in the franchise might have you questioning the “don’t worry about it” hand-waving that keeps the heavy-hitters away from Super Hero’s main fight. The most immediately noticeable difference is the morphing of its 2D characters into CG-rounded 3D models more reminiscent of cutscenes from Dragon Ball FighterZ than the anime. That laissez-faire self-awareness regarding its own convoluted and repetitive mythos can lead to some amusing callbacks for longtime watchers, but it can also lead to underdeveloped character moments that rely on shortcuts and inference rather than story work. Updated for 2022 and the alt-right’s links to business-friendly conservatism, the organization hides behind a pharmaceutical company and adopts a mobster aesthetic of shoulder-padded suits, chomped cigars, tiny mustaches and massive pompadours. Magenta is the son of the late Commander Red; Hedo is the superhero-loving grandson of Cell creator Dr. This affects its heroes, villains and us, reflecting its source material’s specifics—-the generations of death-defying fighters descending from Bardock to Goku to Gohan to Pan—and serialized form. Just like me, watching Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, a movie that finally gives Piccolo his day in the sun.

'Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero' Review: A Triumphant Return (The Cosmic Circus)

Read as Tucker Watkins reviews Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the franchise's triumphant return to the screen.

Gohan is forever tied to Cell, and that final confrontation between the two is one of the most iconic moments in the entire franchise. The way the movie perfectly brings all of these things to a head AND brings Gohan back into the limelight at the same time is excellent. Dragon Ball Super: Broly had some of the most beautiful animations I’ve ever seen in my life, and the choice to abandon that was questionable as is. Hedo to create the androids to take down the Z Fighters, he specifically requested that Hedo create another rendition of Cell. It’s been a long journey, and it’s a journey that’s been forever connected with Piccolo’s relationship with Gohan, tracked all the way back to the two first meeting at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z. With characters like Hedo, Gamma 1, and Gamma 2 as the antagonists, poised to make a turn to the good side, there has to be someone for everyone to team up against in the end. Hedo and Magenta are amazing additions to the cast and bring new levels of complexity to the story. Gohan is not the main character of the story, but that almost gives the character even more liberty as we see it from Piccolo’s perspective. The relationships between these characters and their motivations are incredible and add countless layers to the characters and the story making it so easy to invest in right away. Finally providing a story that evades the focus on Goku and Vegeta, Super Hero was a triumph in both story and animation. Now, the time has come for the Red Ribbon Army to emerge once again with the help of Dr. Commander Red has been succeeded by his son, Magenta, who has been toiling away and rebuilding the Red Ribbon Army under the secret guise of Red Pharmaceuticals.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Gives Piccolo His Own Version of ... (CBR)

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero infuses Piccolo with an impressive new power boost that finally gives him his own Super Saiyan form.

Piccolo doesn't notice the shift in his body tone, and ultimately refuses to call the move his "Super Namekian" form or give it a unique title. [during the "Cell Saga"](https://www.cbr.com/dragon-ball-z-cell-survived-goku-kamehameha-half-body/) -- a similar power boost for Saiyans that provided additional strength (albeit at the cost of mobility). Orange Piccolo is also something of a fun subversion of typical Dragon Ball transformations, which plays well with the rest of Super Hero's more comedic tone. This became especially prevalent in Dragon Ball Z and the ensuing Dragon Ball Super, as Goku and his Saiyan allies kept finding new variants of Super Saiyan to achieve. Similar to Super Saiyan, the transformation comes with a change in color -- albeit the Namekian doesn't get any spiky new features. This allows Piccolo -- a strong fighter whose capabilities have been dwarfed by his Saiyan peers -- to gain a new amount of power to draw upon.
