Instead, when Watson used his introductory press conference to say he did nothing wrong and had no regrets, the Browns verbally supported that contention. The Browns are treating Watson like a monarch. The Browns could say the contract was a condition of Watson waiving his no-trade clause. We have seen many instances of a team acquiring a player with a criminal or immoral past, acknowledging that the player had misbehaved but arguing that he deserved a chance to resume his career. Jimmy Haslam said the Browns want Watson to be the best player he can be and “more importantly, be the best person he can be.” I did not realize the Browns are paying Watson $230 million to be his guidance counselor. The Browns are suckers if they believe in him and frauds if they don’t. Why do the Browns have to completely kowtow to him? Watson was accused of sexually harassing and coercing the women during massage therapy sessions while he played for the Houston Texans.

Watson apologized for the first time “to all the women that I have impacted” before making his Browns’ debut Friday in an exhibition in Jacksonville. “The message today to all victims is clear, if you believe you have been sexually assaulted by a powerful person, keep your mouth shut and go away. “By settling this matter the way he has, Roger Goodell has proven one of two things: Either his recent rhetoric was utter baloney, or his bark is much worse than his bite,” Buzbee said in a statement. She found the 26-year-old violated the league’s conduct policy and called his behavior “egregious” and “predatory.” In civil lawsuits filed in Texas, the women accused Watson of exposing himself, touching them with his penis or kissing them against their will. The league previously pushed for an indefinite suspension and hefty fine. “My whole life I just have to be able to move forward and that’s the plan,” Watson said shortly after the settlement became public. He won’t be allowed at the team’s facility during the suspension and will be eligible for reinstatement on Nov. “Since Deshaun came into our building in April, he has done everything we have asked of him and more,” Jimmy Haslam said at a news briefing with his wife and Browns general manager Andrew Berry. Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, who have been widely criticized for trading for Watson, stood by the QB. “I’ve always stood on my innocence and always said that I’ve never assaulted anyone or disrespected anyone and I’m continuing to stand on that,” he said. As part of the settlement, Watson may return for the Browns’ game on Dec.

Deshaun Watson settlement brings suspension saga to unsatisfying ... (NFL.com)

Deshaun Watson's 11-game suspension brings finality to his situation and clarity to the Browns' plans for the season -- but, Judy Battista writes, ...

The NFL avoids months of traipsing in and out of courtrooms -- during a previous court case against a player, one owner remarked that the league fighting a player in court benefited nobody except the lawyers and their billable hours -- and Watson knows what he has to do to get reinstated. This was a play for the long-term, and he wants to win games, the allegations be damned. Watson's case was one of the most troubling the NFL has ever had involving a player. But the bet the Browns made was a cynical one: Once Watson gets on the field, his play will be so transcendent, the wins rolling up so steadily, that fans will ultimately look past his alleged behavior. There is ample evidence from other cases to indicate that is the correct calculation, but it doesn't make the comments from the owner -- who also noted that ticket sales have been great -- any less tone-deaf. The 11 games is significantly more than what Robinson first levied, but it is clear this agreement was all about this being over, about getting Watson and this seamy case out of the headlines and far away from the kickoff to the new season at the beginning of September. If Watson fails to comply or participate, he would be subject to an increase in discipline or a delay to his reinstatement. His own lack of contrition Thursday shows the discipline may not have gone far enough. Robinson found](https://www.nfl.com/news/deshaun-watson-informed-by-judge-sue-l-robinson-he-should-be-suspended-six-games) that the NFL had proven according to its own definition that he committed sexual assault against the four women whose cases were presented to her, and Commissioner Roger Goodell called Watson's alleged behavior "predatory" [last week](https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-commissioner-roger-goodell-explains-league-s-decision-to-pursue-one-year-sus). Given the nature of Watson's alleged behavior, and Robinson's finding, it is not enough that Watson gets on with his life. The fine is laughably small in the context of the fully guaranteed contract (worth $230 million) the Cleveland Browns lavished on Watson in the spring. The league had initially pushed for (and

The Cleveland Browns quarterback learned a lesson: Power and money still prevail in the NFL.

There was a lot of insistence that Watson is “remorseful” and reminders that he is young. He hasn’t squarely apologized to — or even recognized — the women he abused. Most assuredly Watson deserves a second chance, and nothing anyone does at the age of 26 should be the sum story of their life. “Is he never supposed to be a part of society? There was a lot of talk about “counseling” — mandated for Watson as part of the suspension settlement. There lurks in all of these episodes an underlying sneer and chortle of secret understanding: These men are too rich to care, and there is no NFL punishment they can’t easily absorb and no reputational damage the league won’t help them cure with stage-managed proceedings to quiet the credulous and inferior rest of us. “All women” don’t need an apology from Watson, but they do need to see that those on whom he imposed his “predatory” and “egregious” conduct, in the words of disciplinary officer and former U.S. Once you place your finger squarely on this, you can’t hear anything said by the league or by Cleveland Browns officials as anything other than a concerto of condescension and connivance. Asked if he was so innocent then why did he accept an 11-game suspension, he replied, “That was the legal side,” blithely waving it away with his hand. Otherwise, it’s going to be hard to watch NFL football with anything less than a burning coal in the throat. A modest suggestion: Perhaps the NFL has more disciplinary work to do here with the young man before it declares his case closed. “…I’m going to continue to stand on my innocence.”

Deshaun Watson's NFL suspension will cost him $5.69 million ... (ESPN)

Deshaun Watson's $5 million fine is believed to be the first of its kind under the NFL's personal conduct policy. It is also a drop in the bucket for ...

When Watson signed his contract extension with the Texans in 2020, he got a $27 million signing bonus plus a 2020 salary of about $1.177 million. According to his contract, a copy of which ESPN has obtained, the signing bonus is paid in three parts: $15 million was due by July 31. The subsequent civil suits and criminal investigation of him for sexual misconduct impeded the Texans' ability to trade Watson during the 2021 season, so they left him inactive every week and he made all of his money. Brown](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4047646/aj-brown)'s deal with the [Philadelphia Eagles](/nfl/team/_/name/phi/philadelphia-eagles)is similar in structure. If you want to criticize the Browns for acquiring Watson at all, or for guaranteeing the whole contract as a means of doing so, that's fair. [Tyreek Hill](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3116406/tyreek-hill), for example, got a $25.5 million signing bonus and a minimum $1.035 million salary in 2022 on his [Miami Dolphins](/nfl/team/_/name/mia/miami-dolphins)deal this offseason. So instead of $690,000, the discipline will cost Watson $5.69 million. Watson's fully guaranteed, five-year, $230 million contract with Cleveland featured a $44.965 million signing bonus and a 2022 salary of $1.035 million, which is the minimum 2022 salary for a player like Watson with between four and six years of service time. But the first-year contract structure wasn't some slimy way of saving Watson money. Cleveland couldn't have operated the rest of its offseason if it hadn't structured the Watson deal this way. On the day they acquired Watson, even after restructuring the deals of Combine the two deals, and Watson's total earnings between the summer of 2020 and March 31 of next year will total at least $78.81 million after accounting for the $5 million fine.

Deshaun Watson, 26, will miss the first 11 games of the 2022 Browns season and will be fined $5 million as part of his settlement agreement.

[said in the statement](https://twitter.com/Browns/status/1560299866261159938). The Texans reached confidential settlements with 30 women with claims related to Watson after being accused of enabling his behavior and not stopping it. We are grateful to Judge Robinson and Peter Harvey for their efforts in addressing these matters, which laid the foundation for reaching this conclusion." "I have always stood on my innocence and am going to continue to stand on that, but at the same time I have to continue to push forward on my life and my career," Watson said. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said Thursday that Watson will not play in the team's final preseason games in order to prepare Brissett for the season. 14, which is two weeks prior to the date when he can apply for reinstatement. He will begin serving his suspension after the Browns make their final roster cuts before the start of the season. Essentially, this acts as a resolution to Watson's disciplinary case with the NFL and avoids any legal action from the NFLPA on behalf of Watson. In order to be reinstated, Watson will need to show that he has complied with the treatment program suggested by the experts. Additionally, the league announced Watson "will promptly undergo a professional evaluation by behavioral experts and will follow their treatment program." The NFL had appealed the six-game ban imposed Aug.

On the behavioral side, however, we now have precedent of a team (the Browns) protecting a player financially from loss of income due to a pending suspension. Simply, it is the best player contract in the history of the NFL, and it’s not close. It has determined the final penalty here as much as anything, with the NFL—as usual—playing from a position of strength. In the two contracts negotiated for high-level quarterbacks since Watson, Derek Carr and Kyler Murray do not receive guarantees past their second seasons, allocating the risk of the later years away from the team and to themselves. Harvey, Watson will now [sit out the first 11 games](https://www.si.com/nfl/2022/08/18/deshaun-watson-cleveland-browns-suspension-appeals-ruling) of the NFL season, pay a $5 million fine and undergo mandatory counseling. While the independent arbiter, Robinson, meted out the initial six-game suspension, Goodell sat back and appealed with a handpicked appeal officer, Harvey, who now is spared from making a ruling (I do wonder how much the NFL paid Harvey for, in the end, not making a decision). He settled 23 (and counting) lawsuits, the Texans settled another 30 suits and he is accepting banishment from the NFL until mid-November, with a $5 million fine, but he did nothing wrong? [Deshaun Watson was first reported by massage therapists](https://www.si.com/nfl/2021/05/21/new-information-proper-context-for-deshaun-watson-sexual-misconduct-lawsuits-daily-cover) for sexual harassment and sexual assault, we have resolution of his NFL discipline. Judging from those initial extremes, it does appear the NFL got the better of the deal. As this disciplinary process began, the NFL wanted an indefinite suspension, with Watson having the opportunity to apply for reinstatement after the season.

The Browns would have had the ability to recapture $5,495,722 (or 11/18ths of $8.993 million) from Watson. His 2022 contract year would have become his 2023 contract year and additional years in the contract would have also gotten pushed back one year. Many of the other NFL teams feel that the fully guaranteed, five-year contract worth $230 million Watson signed in March as a part of his trade from the Texans was structured in a manner that was designed to minimize the financial consequences of the suspension. In other words, the Browns can't exit the deal because of accusations stemming from the personal conduct policy suspension. The Browns will get $632,500 of 2022 cap relief from the base salary Watson won't earn because of the suspension. Watson will be eligible to play in the Browns' Week 13 game against the [Texans](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/HOU/houston-texans/), Watson's former team, on Dec. Watson will able to practice during the last two weeks of the suspension beginning on Nov. Robinson found Watson in violation by engaging in sexual assault, conduct that poses a genuine danger to the safety and well-being of another person and conduct that undermines or puts at risk the integrity of the NFL in her 16-page ruling. Under the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, Watson will be allowed back in team facilities and permitted to participate in limited activities during the second half of a suspension on terms similar to players who are suspended under the NFL's performance enhancing substances policy. Watson's punishment is in line with what the NFL was seeking in settlement talks that took place before Robinson's decision. What is unknown is whether Robinson's mandate that Watson's massage therapy to be limited to team-approved massage therapists for the rest of his career remains.
