5 Bears to watch in preseason game vs. Seahawks (ChicagoBears.com)

Senior writer Larry Mayer identifies five Bears players to watch in Thursday night's preseason game against the Seahawks, including top draft pick Kyler ...

He has a clear vision of how he wants to attack it. [starred in the preseason opener](https://www.chicagobears.com/news/dream-becomes-reality-bears-rookie-sanborn-quick-hits-injuries-preseason-week-1), generating two takeaways with an interception and forced fumble. But another strong effort on both defense and special teams would help Sanborn take another step toward earning a spot on the Bears' 53-man roster. "We're excited to see a lot of players that we didn't get a chance to see in the first game. The second-year pro moved from tackle to right guard this week in practice, working with the second unit Monday and the starters Tuesday. So we're excited about it, excited to see how it looks." Asked about switching Jenkins to right guard, offensive line coach Chris Morgan said: "It's a little bit of an adjustment, but we wouldn't ask him to do anything he couldn't handle. Like Gordon, the rookie receiver returned to practice Monday after sitting out the preseason opener with an injury. Gordon, who returned to practice Monday, has displayed playmaking ability and ball skills in practice since being chosen by the Bears in the second round of this year's draft. Last year he was named SEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Year after averaging 27.3 yards with one TD on 23 kickoff returns and 15.1 yards on 18 punt returns. In six college seasons at USC (2016-19) and Tennessee (2020-21), he averaged 24.4 yards with two touchdowns on 122 kickoff returns and 15.1 yards on 18 punt returns. Here are five players to watch in the contest:

He will likely play the majority of the snaps at linebacker once again against the Seahawks, providing yet another prime opportunity to stand out and solidify his case for a spot on the final roster. The linebacker out of Wisconsin led the team in tackles and nabbed an interception to begin the comeback rally in the second half against the Chiefs. He’s starting at right tackle in place of Riley Reiff, who likely won’t suit up in Seattle, and it’s a golden opportunity to take the starting position and run with it. It’s a good opportunity for him to improve on an uneven performance against the Chiefs. The former second-round pick has moved to guard and will get a chance to show whether or not he can acclimate to the interior of the offensive line against the Seahawks. The Bears coaching staff may want to give him some extended reps and it will be a chance to see his connection with quarterback Justin Fields.

It isn't often that I can agree with Colin Cowherd, but he brings up some great points regarding the Chicago Bears and Roquan Smith situation.

[name a top wide receiver](https://bearswire.usatoday.com/lists/chicago-bears-all-time-leading-receivers-in-history/) of the Chicago Bears is a little ridiculous, but to his point, none have been homegrown. If he tells me Roquan Smith is needed then I do what I can to make that happen. I was hesitant to accept that low of an offer, to be honest, but I’ve been coming around to it. Think of that position somewhat similar to the running back position on offense — it’s heavily devalued. The thing is, I am having a hard time disagreeing with his most recent take surrounding the contract negotiations between the Bears and Smith. It is not often that I agree with Cowherd’s takes seeing he is one of those national broadcasters who likes to stir the pot more than do any actual analysis.

Colin Cowherd provides gut-wrenching reality check for Chicago ... (FanSided)

On Tuesday, Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd provided a strong yet truthful statement regarding the Chicago Bears and linebacker Roquan Smith.

The Chicago Bears look outdated, and until they modernize and get with the program, life will not change, and more and more personalities, including fans, will hurl criticism in their direction. It looks good in images, but how can anyone forget what the [turf appeared to be in the preseason game against the Chiefs](https://twitter.com/JasonLieser/status/1558479218920546304?s=20&t=A5dvPa93yg208QEWHMW7Gg)? The record is held by Erik Kramer, who threw for 3,838 yards in 1995, a year in which the Bears went 9-7 and missed the playoffs following a late-season collapse. Most of the success during that time was in 2006, a year that was mainly about the defense and special teams carrying the Bears to the Super Bowl, only for the championship dreams to be washed away in a rainstorm by Peyton Manning, Dwight Freeny, and the Indianapolis Colts. The Bears have considered moving to Arlington Heights and immediately got clapback from the city, including Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who even The trade for Rick Mirer from Seattle for a 1st-round pick can be argued as the worst trade in franchise history. When it comes to pass rushers, the Bears have done it right. But back to Cowherd for a moment; if you go back through the 1950s till now, there are countless great linebackers that you could name for the Chicago Bears, but the same cannot be said for wide receivers. This is not to say that the Chicago Bears should absolutely trade Roquan Smith or not even pay him. The Bears have only played in two Super Bowls in their history and boast one title, from 1985, a year that is still talked about today with a style of football that does not equate to the modern era. [YouTuber Jeff Schlegel](https://t.co/JxseGKRWvi) refers to it as #BEARSFOOTBALL, which heavily prioritizes running the ball and excellent defensive play. But on Tuesday, the Fox Sports radio host gave his thoughts on the recent drama surrounding the men of the Windy City and their disgruntled star linebacker Roquan Smith.

Bears' Roquan Smith in Seattle Amid Dallas Cowboys Trade Rumors (Sports Illustrated)

Let me put it this way: These might be good ideas. But they are not the Cowboys' ideas.

But the going APY rate for star inside linebackers is between $15 million and $19 million. And someplace else: In the math minds of observers. 8 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft would allow Dallas to “leave Micah Parsons at his natural position as an edge rusher.” Their view might be wrong. Sources outside of The Star, almost certainly. Lombardo thinks the Bears’ eventual asking price could be as low as a future third-round pick; we are skeptical there. And Chicago dumps him for a middle-round pick? [very distasteful](https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/08/20/roquan-smith-will-play-for-bears-on-current-contract/) to say the least,” Smith said. . Now I’m just shifting my focus to the season … “We couldn’t agree.” I’m going to take it and run with it and bet on myself. . .

Ranking The Likeliest Roquan Smith Trade Destinations (sportsmockery.com)

Roquan Smith is more likely to get a new contract than get traded, but things change fast in the NFL. So where might he end up?

So the connection is an obvious one to make. He is now a senior executive with the Falcons. Dallas will be over the cap next off-season, so they would have to jump through significant financial hoops to make this work. They have four picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 draft and are projected to have $40 million in cap space next year. Another key factor is they, too, have shifted to a 3-4 defense under new coordinator Dean Pees. Adding Smith would give them the excuse to make that move permanent. Three things are required for a trade like this to become possible: draft picks, money, and interest in the player. He traded a 2nd round pick for Corey Dillon. If he feels this situation is becoming more trouble than it’s worth, he has shown the willingness to make the hard decisions. They have uncertainty at the position. [Chicago Bears](https://www.sportsmockery.com/chicago-bears/chicago-bears-who-face-a-do-or-die-scenario-in-seahawks-game/) remains the same. Desai, whose Bears tenure spanned nine seasons and three head coaches, is the Seahawks’ associate head coach for defense. The Bears’ drive included a fourth-and-2 play in which Seahawks outside linebacker Darrell Taylor committed a neutral-zone infraction to give the Bears a first down. Webster had a 58-yard kickoff return in the third quarter. had his biggest moment late in the first quarter when he caught Michael Dickson’s punt and cut toward the left sideline. It was a short appearance, but Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields had a few positives to review during the trip back from Seattle.

The Morning After...the Bears' preseason win vs. Seahawks (Chicago Bears Wire)

The Chicago Bears defeated the Seattle Seahawks 27-11 in their second preseason game on Thursday night. And, to be honest, it wasn't close.

The Bears have just one more game to solidify a few positions. The offensive line was better, the offense looked smoother, and the defense played lights out. The Bears dismantled Seattle and played a far more disciplined game from start to finish. While the hope is to get Jones involved on offense, he showed how he can benefit the offense on special teams. The Chicago Bears defeated the Seattle Seahawks 27-11 in their second preseason game on Thursday night. But from what we’ve seen so far, Fields and the Bears are trending in the right direction.

Justin Fields finds Cole Kmet — and the offensive line makes moves ... (Chicago Tribune)

Read Brad Biggs' 10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears got a scoring drive from their starters in a 27-11 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.

I wasn’t the first to fumble and I won’t be the last to fumble in this league. I can’t be dropping the ball and putting the ball on the ground. “To get out there and get my feet wet and actually have some film I can watch of myself, that’s a great feeling, and I can’t wait for the next,” he said. I have been telling the coaches and players I have never been to any training camp (for so long). Then after Washington, he was back to Seattle and then Atlanta with (Kyle) Shanahan and then he gets into a man-blocking scheme with a couple years for the Steelers and now in Chicago. “A lot of the rules are the same. “Film, being with coaches, being locked in on the sidelines and being able to take those mental reps at every position I play,” Gordon said. He was a long, athletic kid in high school and he went to a high school that traditionally doesn’t win a lot of games. Reiff quickly worked in with the first unit at left tackle, but he has been on the right side of late, givingJones a clear path to nail down the job — a remarkable development for a In the absence of appropriate value, it would be very difficult for Poles to stand up and declare he made the future for the Bears better by trading away a very good player who is only 25. that I thought were going to show him the respect that he deserves.” Whatever gets me on the field and is best for the team I am willing to do.”

Bears defense shines in preseason win over Seahawks (ChicagoBears.com)

It was a small sample size, but the Bears' No. 1 defense performed well in Thursday night's 27-11 preseason win over the Seahawks, forcing three-and-outs on ...

"We really like him on the inside, but certainly he's going to play on the outside too." "Last week, the guy on Kansas City muffed a punt and I almost got it," Hicks said. But then I was also just locked in on my job and just ready to contribute." "The game flow was nice," he said. I'm just going to keep on trying to get better and whatever happens from there happens. Just having an opportunity to get out there, it was what I was waiting for." But the seventh-round pick from Cal knows that he must continue to produce. "I was more excited to be on the field and do something. "It was extremely exciting," Gordon said. We want to be able to show the intensity of how we hit and how we knock things back and how we tackle. And then in the game, you want to see the hitting and the tackling. Seattle didn't score until Jason Myers kicked a 27-yard field goal with :29 left in the third quarter to make the score 24-3.

Bears Insider Brings Optimistic Roquan Smith Update (sportsmockery.com)

Roquan Smith hasn't budged on his contract demands thus far. However, it looks like there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

It remains in the best interests of everybody for a deal to get done. Of course, that could be the company line trickling out of Halas Hall. Brad Biggs of the After four excellent seasons of play, that isn’t the result fans were hoping for. Or perhaps the Bears grant his request for a trade. The longer this continues, the more likely it appears Smith may carry his holdout into the regular season.

Newfound Optimism on a Roquan Smith Extension With the Bears? (bleachernation.com)

Maybe an extension for Bears linebacker Roquan Smith isn't a total long shot? There seems to be some positive momentum building.

In the end, I find it noteworthy that Smith has been with the team throughout his hold-in. Smith has been on the sidelines during both preseason games. But maybe that’s yet another reason to be optimistic that the two sides can cook up an extension before the start of the regular season. But with that comes the sense that the odds of a trade are dwindling. So while that doesn’t provide much in terms of getting Smith the extension he wants, getting him back on the field with his teammates feels like an important first step. All of a sudden, I’m thinking maybe the two sides can hash things out after all.

Preseason Star DeMarquis Gates' Crazy Story Of Almost Missing ... (sportsmockery.com)

DeMarquis Gates was thrilled when he got a call from the Bears for a tryout. Then everything almost came crashing down on him.

That is how much he wants to play in the NFL. The best part is the sacrifice wasn’t in vain. That is the mark of a man determined upon his mission. They brought him in for a tryout, and he impressed, earning a new contract—a relatively straightforward story on the surface. If that weren’t bad enough, the next available one was overbooked the following morning. Seahawks vs. Bears score, takeaways: Chicago throttles Seattle to ... (CBSSports.com)

Thursday night football turned into a Thursday night beatdown this week, as the Chicago Bears won their second preseason game of the exhibition season 27-11 ...

The Seahawks will also hit the road to take on the Dallas Cowboys, closing out the exhibition season next Friday. The Seahawks committed five offensive penalties in the first half. Many don't see Chicago as having one of the elite wide receiving corps in the NFL, but keep an eye on the rookie out of Tennessee. This is not what you want to see in the preseason. A couple of things to note from that first drive: The Bears went play-action on almost every passing play. On one drive in the first half, the Seahawks converted a fourth-and-2 at the Bears' 34-yard line to get to the 22-yard line, but an illegal use of hands penalty nullified the play and knocked Seattle out of field goal range. But there was good news following the game, per Pete Carroll, who said X-rays were negative and Lewis suffered an ankle sprain. Neither were targeted, however, and the Seahawks went three-and-out. The very next drive, Jason Myers missed a 47-yard field goal attempt after the Seahawks had a first-and-10 from the Bears' 27-yard line just a few plays earlier. Smith missed on a couple of deep passes and also tripped over his own running back off of play-action for a big loss. Smith played the entire first half, completing 10 of 18 passes for 112 yards, and registered what was an up-and-down performance. A 14-0 second-quarter run extended the Bears' lead to 17 by halftime, and the deficit was too much for Seattle's reserves to overcome.
