Netflix's Addams Family TV spinoff Wednesday gets its first trailer (Polygon)

Wednesday Addams leads a new Addams Family spinoff series coming to Netflix from director Tim Burton. The first trailer shows Jenna Ortega stars as ...

The first trailer for Wednesday gives us our first taste of Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, and a brief glimpse of Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley. And while high school-aged Wednesday Addams clearly enjoys seeing a swarm of angry fish bear down on high school jock Dalton’s junk, the more surprising element of Wednesday is that she appears to have found an educational institution and social circle more suited to her dark disposition: Nevermore Academy. Her classmates range from creepy to kooky, while situations both mysterious and spooky will keep Wednesday and the Netflix audience entertained.

The new teaser for Tim Burton's Netflix series also offers a first glimpse of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman as Morticia and Gomez Addams.

The question of whether Wednesday has any desire to be understood, by a peer or not, remains unanswered by the end of the trailer. One of the bloodthirsty fish cleanly castrates Dalton, the same water-polo player who said “Hey, freak,” when she walked in. At fair “Nancy Reagan High School” where we set our scene, Wednesday (Scream’s Jenna Ortega) operates in stark contrast to the rest of her neon-backpacked and jean-shorted classmates, down to her impeccable taste in leather footwear.

'Wednesday' Trailer Teases High School Mayhem for the Addams ... (Hollywood Reporter)

Netflix has released the first trailer for its Tim Burton-directed Addams Family TV series Wednesday, which stars Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones and ...

Co-showrunner Alfred Gough said he and Millar have “no comment on Uncle Fester,” with the writer telling fans to simply “watch the show.” “It’s not trying to be the movies or the ’60s TV show. “I think I’m going to love it here.” [previously teased](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/netlflix-wednesday-not-a-remake-reboot-1235200230/) that the series was not going to be a reboot or a remake of [The Addams Family](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/addams-family/), but its “own thing” and hopefully one that would play like “an eight-hour Tim Burton movie.” That was very important to us and very important to Tim.” “It’s something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it’s its own thing,” he said. Burton serves as both director and executive producer on the eight-episode series slated to debut this fall. Nearly all of the Addams Family is teased in the trailer, including the disembodied hand Thing, but a notable absence from the preview is Uncle Fester, who also does not appear in the show’s first look photos. Described by her father Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) as a “magical place,” Nevermore offers Wednesday the promise of a community of people who will understand her along with the possibility of making real friends. “Little did I know I’d be stepping into a nightmare — full of mystery, mayhem and murder,” Ortega’s Wednesday says, amid a confetti-filled montage (including some Easter eggs) that ends in blood. 'Wednesday' Trailer: Catherine Zeta-Jones Slinks Into Netflix's ... (IndieWire)

Catherine Zeta-Jones is unrecognizable as Morticia Addams in the trailer for Tim Burton's "Wednesday," premiering this fall on Netflix.

“Wednesday” is also keeping it all in “The Addams Family” with Christina Ricci (who played Wednesday in the ’90s movies) returning to the franchise as a series regular. Per the official synopsis, “Wednesday” is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting 16-year-old Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. “That’s something that was very important to the show — that it didn’t feel like a remake or a reboot. Four-time Oscar winner and frequent Burton collaborator Colleen Atwood is brought on as the costume designer for the legendary gothic looks for the Addams clan. “Their overt displays of affection drive Wednesday crazy.”

Meet the New Addams Family From Tim Burton's 'Wednesday' (Vanity Fair)

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán take on the roles of Morticia and Gomez Addams in the Netflix series.

“He had a lot of questions about the previous television work we’d done, like how we were able to achieve it. “He wanted the silhouette to look more like the Charles Addams cartoons, which is Gomez shorter than Morticia, versus the kind of suave Raul Julia version in the movies,” Gough says. “He’s also incredibly debonair and romantic, and I think he has all those classic ingredients of the Gomez that has come before, but he brings something also very different and new,” Millar adds. That was very important to us and very important to Tim.” Tim Burton is an executive producer and directed four of the eight episodes, helping to shape the overall look of the series. Perhaps the weirdest thing about the show, which will debut this fall, is that he hasn’t made an Addams Family project sooner.

It’s clear from the trailer that Nevermore Academy, a curious school run by Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie), is a much better fit for Wednesday, what with its classes focused on deadly duels and otherworldly creatures. Wednesday’s first trailer introduces its take on Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) just as she’s being expelled from yet another one of her “normal” schools for terrorizing her fellow students — something neither her mother (Catherine Zeta-Jones) nor father (Luis Guzman) are especially surprised to hear. While the people Wednesday Addams deigns to grace with her presence might not enjoy her idea of a good time, that’s not to say that she isn’t making a good faith effort to, you know, connect with them.

First official teaser for Wednesday is deliciously “Burtonesque” (Ars Technica)

"The ambition of the show was to make it an eight-hour Tim Burton movie."

As for who will be playing Uncle Fester, the showrunners refused to comment, with Gough [telling Vanity Fair,](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/08/addams-family-first-look-wednesday) "Watch the show." [written previously](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/04/today-in-unnecessary-reboots-animated-addams-family-film-coming-this-fall/), American cartoonist Charles Addams [created the characters](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Addams_Family) in 1938, originally as a series of single-panel cartoons published in The New Yorker. Instead, she finds herself in a "nightmare, full of mystery, mayhem, and murder." ("I did the world a favor. This results in the altogether ooky castration of one of the boys. The characters proved so popular that ABC created a 1964 [live-action sitcom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Addams_Family_(1964_TV_series)), The Addams Family, based on them. The teaser wastes no time establishing that this is an older, edgier, and even darker Wednesday who—we learn via voiceover—has been expelled from eight schools in five years. "It's something that lives within the Venn Diagram of what happened before, but it's its own thing," Christina Ricci's scene-stealing seminal portrayal of Wednesday was easily one of the highlights of the 1990s films. The first made a reasonable box office showing despite mixed reviews; the second did less well and was largely panned by critics and audiences alike. All in all, it looks deliciously Burtonesque, and we're keen to give it a chance.
