The R/T can also travel on battery alone for about 30 miles. Dodge unveiled the Hornet as part of its Speed Week celebrations in Michigan on Tuesday night.
The 2023 Dodge Hornet will offer gas and plug-in electric hybrid options as the brand moves toward electrification.
Orders for the Hornet GT will be taken beginning Wednesday for arrival at dealerships later this year. Dodge has also shown a GLH (Goes-Like-Hell) Concept to demonstrate what the brand’s Direct Connection performance parts can do. That doesn’t mean Dodge won’t continue to offer high-performance vehicles, but I don’t think its role within Stellantis will allow for such a narrow product focus." “With prices starting around $30,000, the Hornet should capture drivers who want something a little sportier than a Chevrolet Equinox or Ford Escape but cannot afford the entry-luxury models from BMW and Audi.” Driver attention assist, to detect fatigue, and intelligent adaptive cruise control are a couple of the available advanced driver assistance safety features. Pricing hasn’t either, although the GT is supposed to start at under $30,000. The R/T also has a nifty feature called PowerShot that can add an extra 25 horsepower for 15 seconds that’s repeatable after a 15-second cooldown. Hornet also gets the Uconnect 5 infotainment system. This is the dodge hornet, and yes it looks familiar, but is the new face and performance enough to make it a "true" dodge?
Stellantis has certainly done a good job in setting up this vehicle for the masses as it is indeed equipped with a host of goodies to make this compact crossover SUV handle like a hoot. The 2023 Dodge Hornet starts at $29,995 for the base GT, while the R/T retails for $39,995. The flagship engine choice is found in the R/T, and this is a 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder that’s mated to an electric motor and a 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. A limited-slip differential (LSD) comes as standard across the range, letting this crossover SUV put its power to the ground in a grippy fashion. Yes, this is the Alfa Romeo Tonale, and it’s been given a bit of a corporate redesign by Dodge to fit it into their design portfolio. Well, the new Hornet does build off of the Tonale’s platform and hybrid offerings, but we’re happy to see the Hornet served up by Dodge as a bespoke-enough product. The Hornet R/T will arrive in spring 2023. In the case of the Hornet, performance-minded customers will be able to trick out their ride with a little extra sting via suspension lowering kits, unrestricted dual exhaust, special graphics and painted parts, and stackable performance upgrades. The 2023 Dodge Hornet was revealed on Tuesday, August 16th, at the M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan, as part of the brand’s “Speed Week” celebrations. Hornet R/T versions use the more interesting-sounding powertrain, a plug-in hybrid that nets 288 hp combined, based on a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, paired with a six-speed automatic, that works in parallel with a 90-kilowatt electric motor on the rear axle and 15.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. Cloth seats are standard, with leather seats coming on the GT Plus and R/T Plus trims. Much like the exterior, these screens, along with most of the design and hardware, are shared with the Tonale. The base Hornet GT features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the system lacks any sort of knob for tuning, although a volume scroll wheel sits on the center console to the right of the conventional gear selector. Similarly, the rear window doesn’t appear to have a significant rake to it, and the wiper appears to cover a significant swath of glass. The multifunction steering wheel has controls for entertainment selections and volume, the driver information center in the gauge cluster, cruise control, and some active safety features. The GLH (Goes Like Hell) name was first used on the Shelby-tuned Dodge Omni, which was sold between 1984 and 1986. The bottom of the windows flows out of the hood, which on the Dodge features two large vents for removing engine heat, and begins to curve upward midway through the rear door, forming a curved triangular-shaped third window that tapers at the roofline. Dodge also introduced a Hornet GT GLH Concept, which is being used to showcase the Direct Connection collection of available performance parts. Like most cars and SUVs that benefit (or suffer, depending on your point of view) from badge engineering, the Hornet’s main shape and sheet metal are almost identical to the Tonale. Fitting with the brand’s muscle car image, Dodge is positioning the Hornet as a performance-oriented sporty compact SUV.
Speaking at the third day of Dodge Speed Week, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis said the automaker already had 14000 pre-orders for the new Hornet.

The next step up from the GT is the Hornet R/T, and that's where the electrification comes in. ECU tunes, suspension kits, exhaust upgrades, and GLH graphics present a version of the Hornet that could be created by buyers seeking a bit more excitement from the platform. The Hornet GT is where it starts, utilizing a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 265 horsepower. The Dodge Hornet promises impressive performance for under $30,000, and apparently, it's garnered some attention.

Operated by a dedicated button conveniently located on the steering wheel, available driving modes include: The Dodge Hornet R/T PHEV, representing the brand’s first electrified performance vehicle, delivers 285-plus horsepower and 383 ft-lb (519 N·m) of torque. A high-power inverter and 7.4-kW charging module allow for a full battery charge to be reached in approximately 2.5 hours using a Level 2 charger. An electric induction motor powers the rear axle; the 90-kW electric motor can deliver 184 lb-ft (250 N·m) of torque from 0 rpm.
The entry-level Dodge Hornet GT is the only model currently available to pre-order.
The R/T uses a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder alongside an electric motor, resulting in a combined +285 hp and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque, meaning it can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 6.1 seconds with the ‘PowerShot’ feature enabled off the line. It will be interesting to see what percentage of buyers opt for the Hornet GT and the R/T when the latter hits the market next year. This engine works alongside a nine-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels and allowing the SUV to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 6.5 seconds, not bad for an entry-level model.

The thing is, the Dart was arguably a good value too for its time — from an equipment and power standpoint, anyway — and that didn’t help it stand out from the the likes of the Focus, Civic and Elantra. Dodge is expanding its three-model lineup with a new compact SUV. The 2023 Hornet will debut later this year.
It also offers significant savings with pre-negotiated prices, home delivery and online sales options. It connects shoppers who want to buy or lease a new car with local dealers. Dodge and other Stellantis brands frequently offer a baseline of safety equipment, such as forward collision warnings and automatic emergency braking to bolster safety scores in vehicles. Alfa Romeo includes blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and more as standard kit in the Tonale. We may see a curved display or a panoramic display that combines the gauge cluster and infotainment screens, but that's less likely than a traditional display in a vehicle at the Hornet's expected price point. As for its actual on-sale date and official release in the United States, we're most likely looking at a date sometime late in 2022 or early 2023. Early spy photos show an SUV with strikingly similar styling to the Alfa Romeo Tonale, so it's not like Dodge is starting with a clean sheet design. The Hornet name originated on a Hudson model decades ago, which was handed off to Chrysler after the AMC acquisition in the late 1980s. The compact SUV will share much of its underpinnings with the Alfa Romeo Tonale, and will slot into the Dodge lineup beneath the long-running Durango. With the unveiling of the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet (GG) on Tuesday, the internet exploded with comments about the newest C-SUV.
Of that total, Grand Caravan and Journey sales made up a total of 79,109 units (or 29.6% of the brand’s sales). But the Hornet is here to stir up a swarm of sales for Dodge and it looks to be doing so right off the bat. Dodge’s “People Movers” were the true bread and butter of the brand over the past several years. Then the American performance brand showcases a new mainstream compact SUV with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology and it caused many to think what is happening over in the Dodge offices. And remember, that is without officially releasing pricing or any information via the “It took Dodge years to enter the massive compact UV segment and the response was exactly what we expected,” explained Kuniskis.

Media drives of the Alfa Romeo Tonale and Dodge Hornet haven’t happened yet, so only time will tell if Stellantis has figured out a way to distance the two cars in the driving experience. “Customers seem to be very happy with the Dodge Hornet, with more than 14,000 orders received in less than 24 hours after its reveal,” a Dodge spokesman said via email. “Dodge took advantage of the [Tonale] to make a compliance car—their Aston Martin Cygnet moment, if you will. According to a source within Stellantis who spoke with The Drive on condition of anonymity, the Tonale started as primarily an Alfa Romeo project; but internal politicking, and a desire for Dodge to raise its low average fuel economy numbers, saw the Alfa Romeo Tonale morph into the Dodge Hornet. The segment could use more good-driving, enthusiast-oriented choices—Alfa Romeo is generally good at creating a car that drives well. Yet, a source inside parent-company Stellantis tells us that not everyone in the company is happy—namely Alfa Romeo.
