'Raising Kanan' Season 2 Will See Raq 'Unsettled,' Says Star Patina ... (CNET)

The highly anticipated premiere of the Power spinoff on Starz finds Raq 'putting out fires' while Kanan questions his existence.

"This is a mother who decided to leave her child at a very young age," says Miller. "For Raq, who is all about family, it's not a good thing that her mom is back in the picture. Already conflicted over whether he wants to remain part of the criminal underworld, Kanan will have to navigate new decisions and consequences at his young age. Initially, Kanan was under the impression that Def Con -- who was arrested and convicted thanks to Detective Howard -- was his biological father. Miller added that viewers will get to see how she tries to hold on to her power as secrets come out and things get more dangerous for her. As she attempts to expand her drug enterprise into new territory, Raq clashes with the mob as well as Lou-Lou's desire to quit the family business for music. "You're the heir to this throne, Kanan, and it's waiting for you if you want it."

Power Book III: Raising Kanan star Patina Miller teases Raq and Lou's relationship breakdown in season 2.

"But right when things got really serious, she just had to let them have it – and so they can't go back. "So to have to talk to him and really tell him and threaten him basically: 'You're not ever going anywhere' at the end, that was a big deal. Lou has a lot of respect for Raq and up until this point [so did Raq for him]. I think through her saying what she said she was just trying to tell him, like she's tried to tell him throughout the first season, to stay focused.

MeKai Curtis and Patina Miller discuss how their 'Raising Kanan' characters' emotional connection resonates despite extreme circumstances.

So the second season is about trying to hold on to power, but also trying to hold on to her son.” “There’s this balancing act happening on both sides,” Curtis said about the newly complicated relationship between the show’s mother and son duo. “The queen pin of it all is one thing, but she’s a businesswoman at the end of the day.

First off, that episode was directed by Mario Van Peebles. So once you have Mario on board, it's hard not to lean into New Jack City,” Penn told Cassius Life. “ ...

So anyway, yeah, I think in a way, Raq’s ascension is reminiscent of the Cash Money Brothers. It has those vibes in a good way. And so we’re trying to explore that a little bit.” And I don’t think Power or this series exists without that movie, in a way. Another factor that makes Raising Kanan stand out is the show’s use of music to help tell the story. Maybe they do but in a different way. I don’t think Power or this series exists without that movie, in a way.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 2 episode 2: Promo reveals! (CarterMatt)

Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 2 episode 2 is coming to Starz next weekend, and there is a LOT that the series needs to address.

We know that Raq tried to set things up so that he wouldn’t be able to seize some of his old power back, but that’s the sort of thing that is SO much easier said than done. He also is playing more of the long game, as he wants to do things different both in his career and personal life. We think a lot of it still comes down to his son and wanting to find a way to get closer to him.

'Raising Kanan' Season 2 Spoilers: EP Teases A 'Reckoning' For ... (Hollywood Life)

HL got EXCLUSIVE scoop from 'Raising Kanan' EP Sascha Penn about the secret of Kanan's real father looming large in season 2, a possible path to forgiveness ...

That’s a big part of Marvin’s journey across the second season is trying to figure out if he can redeem himself. Each one of them not wanting to give up too much, and at the same time trying to say something that they can’t quite say because they don’t know what it means if they say it. I think what we can expect in season 2 is that that secret looms large over the entire season. She has been his North Star and his son for so long that all of a sudden to learn that his mother may not be who he thought she was is really difficult and shocking for him and really compels him to try to understand who he is as just Kanan rather than Raq’s son. Sascha admitted that this secret will eventually “erupt” and there will be a “reckoning.” He also weighed in on Jukebox’s complicated relationship with her mother and Howard’s legacy. Raq ordered Kanan to kill Howard, who also happens to be his father, but Howard is still alive and still carrying his and Raq’s secret with him.

Instead, he actually doubles down on what he said and lets Raq know that not only did Kanan confide in him on the way down to Virginia, he was visibly scared. She suggests that he have a conversation with the direct source (i.e. his mom). As Famous walks up to greet his friends, Kanan peeps Detective Howard driving by. She and her brothers are bringing in $75,000 A DAY! To keep the peace, Raquel makes sure to bribe the residents and address any of their requests. Despite having a nice lunch, Raq and Symphony’s personalities clash once again after he brings up the incident in the park and reminds Raq how good of a kid she has. Detective Howard sees him at the station running his mouth in the investigation room. Back inside the house, Raq, Marvin, and Lou-Lou are refining their plan to expand. And because of their shift in police tactics, Raquel had to shift her businesswoman tactics to sell her product in large quantities yet under the radar. Kanan is pretty surprised that what he did in the park (or, more so, failed to do) didn’t even come up at dinner. The label has proven to be harder than he thought. As he tries to make sense of all that took place, he knows that his innocence is officially gone. Not interested in engaging with her, he sticks to his memory loss story. According to the Detective, he doesn’t remember anything from the night he was shot.

And that for him is really, really difficult to sort of process and understand because when this person that you sort of live your life for betrays you in a way, that's a real shock to the system, and I think it does speak to Kanan's journey and how Kanan ends up being the Kanan of Power. And so I think that's the fun of the series, but also very much integral to season two. SP: I think they're going to be most shocked by sort of the new alliances that are formed and the old ones that are sort of broken. But yeah, I mean, I think for Kanan, what becomes very, very challenging is that his mother, who was sort of the sun that he orbits and whom he trusts above any other, may be untrustworthy. We know Kanan's going to live, and we know Jukebox is going to live. But also, I think the central challenge is always to just keep getting better as storytellers, as filmmakers, just to keep raising the stakes for ourselves creatively is always the goal and the challenge. PC: Well, it's interesting that you said that the audience is used to a certain flow.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 2 Episode 1 Review: The ... (TV Fanatic)

Kanan returns to Queens after his time away, where he sees the changes Raq has made to the business on Power Book III: Raising Kanan...

The Howard and Raq cliffhanger ending is the perfect way to end an hour that again sets up the major players. But I like the idea of him returning as an adversary for Raq because he was a damn good one. In getting to this place of stability, it's clear that Marvin has played a huge part, which is surprising and not. And if one day someone could explain to me the greater purpose of this storyline, I would appreciate it. Look, it's not like Howard was some shining beacon of light, but he deserved a lot better than the hand he was dealt. The damage is done with Jukebox, who has every right to never give her father the time of day again if she desires. Kanan is looking to step back, and Raq wants to pull him in further. But through much of that season, you could see that underneath it all, Kanan didn't seem to have that thing that his mother and uncles had. Much of Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 1 centered around Kanan's desperation to join the business and live up to the legacy of a father he never knew. Her primary was always to expand and take over the city, and as we can see here, she's basically succeeded. Prequels are tricky because of all the preconceived notions, but they've made the Kanan Stark origin story so compelling that you forget you're watching the creation of a monster. Every time there's a gap between Power spinoffs, enough time passes where I start to wonder which one is the best.

'Power Book III: Raising Kanan' Recap: Kanan Comes Home ... (Black America Web)

Kanan returns to Queens after shooting Detective Howard, Raq's drug business is booming, Unique gets out of jail and Lou Lou wants out.

Raq also warned Scrappy to stop going to his mother’s illegal card games because if he gets caught, that could spell trouble for Raq and her organization. Raq and Lou Lou’s relationship is deteriorating, especially after she revealed she wants to hire the same man from Unique’s crew who tried to kill him. Her dad, Marvin, dodges a bullet and will not face any jail time after Toni snitched on him because she didn’t even bother to show up to the court to testify against him. Raq is not feeling her best enforcer not being focused on the family business, but we saw last season that Lou Lou was losing interest in the drug game. Jessica asks Camacho for help, and he hooks her up with a new job in Los Angeles. Lou Lou is no longer interested in wasting money on Famous and drives off and, just by a stroke of luck, pulls up alongside a young woman singing in her car. Howard still claims not to remember what happened that night, but his memory seems to start clicking again when he picks up a file on Kanan. She also happens to be extremely beautiful, so she could end up being a replacement for Jessica. But he also called Howard’s recovery nothing short of a miracle because he came into the hospital with a bullet in his chest and cancer in his lungs. Thanks to a bone marrow transplant from another officer, Howard’s cancer is in remission, and now he has a second chance at life. Raq reassures Kanan that he will be good because Howard is suffering from amnesia, so he doesn’t remember anything from the night he was shot. Last season, Detective Howard was hanging on to dear life after his cancer diagnosis.

“Raising Kanan”: Patina Miller and Mekai Curtis' onscreen bond is at ... (REVOLT TV)

"Raising Kanan" stars Patina Miller and Mekai Curtis sit for an exclusive REVOLT interview just as season two of the STARZ series kicks off.

She looks at the big picture and is very calculated when it comes to business. During the second season, Kanan is coming into his own a bit more and starting to ask more questions. Both characters know how to communicate with each other without speaking a word, which is the beauty of a lot of their conversations — it’s unspoken, but they are having a whole different conversation under the surface. That means bringing him into the business and connecting with him again because she knows the consequences of what she sent him to do. For anything in the world to be thrown off or broken or fractured lately, in season two, it sends him into a tailspin in a way, but he’s trying to figure out things outside of Raquel. Kanan wants to piece together who he is and what he wants to do, what he’s going to do, but yet and still trying to figure out how to balance what to do with Raq. It’s an interesting balancing act that takes place. Raq being smart and the manipulator that she is, she’s ready to turn it and get Kanan to be okay.

The Biggest Questions We Have After 'Power: Raising Kanan ... (UPROXX)

Kanan is back in Queens following a failed attempt to kill Detective Howard, and he returns to a very tense city, family drama, and more.

The episode also closes with a meeting between Raq and Howard. All signs point to Howard remembering everything from the night he was shot, and it seems like his memory loss is all an act as he looks to get back to investigating Raq, Kanan (who is still unaware that Howard is his father), and others on his own terms. A lot can change in a summer and that couldn’t be clearer between Jukebox and Kanan. After reconnecting in this episode, Kanan and Jukebox sit outside the former’s house for a conversation. Is it about Howard wanting to tell Kanan that he’s his father? Traumatic moments will change you, and we can slowly see that between Kanan and Jukebox. The question that remains is how will it further change them as both individuals and in regards to their friendship? Kanan is hesitant about continuing in the drug business, but it may be too little too late as he’s caused enough damag. Is it about the shooting? That’s because Raq framed Unique ( played by Joey Badass) for the shooting by having Kanan wear Unique’s trademark jacket during the shooting before having it quickly placed in Unique’s hotel room. Marvin has a lot of work to do to repair his relationship with Jukebox, and that work will involve a lot more than a simple apology and half-assed promise to do better. With that being said, Kanan returns to Queens where the city remains tense following the shooting. Kanan’s desire to protect and provide for his family is what motivates his entrance into the drug game, but he may have underestimated how ruthless it can be, something we see at the end of season one. Following the shooting, Kanan spends the summer in Virginia until things cool off, and it’s not until Raq returns to pick him up that he’s told Detective Howard survived the shooting. In a conversation with the doctors as Howard is being discharged, Detective Burke, Howard’s fairly new partner, seems to question the fact that Howard can’t remember anything from the shooting.

Raising Kanan's London Brown teases 'reverse' dynamic for Marvin ... (Daily Express)

RAISING KANAN is back for season two and Marvin actor London Brown has teased what the family power dynamic is going to be like this time around.

No matter what happens though, Marvin Thomas (London Brown) has and will remain by their sides and don't they know it. "So within this next season, I think people are going to see Marvin be a little more responsible and a little more respect is going to be shown from how they react with Marvin." "And that was on purpose, I knew I was going to take Marvin and create these layers throughout the season. In season one of Raising Kanan, Marvin was the uncle that the rest of the family turned to when they needed a risky job doing. The Power drama is picking up from where it left off with Kanan Stark (played by Mekai Curtis) and Raq Thomas (Patina Miller) still trying to shield themselves from getting into trouble with the law.
