The Carolina Panthers face the Washington Commanders in a preseason game on Saturday, August 13, 2022 (8/13/22) at Fedex Field in Summerfield, Maryland.

Young spent more than two weeks in the hospital and needed extensive surgery just to save his leg from complications. “I learned from his toughness and mental fortitude, from his study habits — he would be the first guy in there, last guy to leave. The Youngs also endured the unimaginable pain of losing their son, 15-year-old Colby, to pediatric brain cancer in 2016. Like the rest of Young’s teammates, he was amazed by Young’s comeback for the 1999 season opener. Young was the bridge to the future for a defense stocked with veteran talent including Dana Stubblefield, Rickey Jackson, Ken Norton Jr., Tim McDonald, Merton Hanks and Deion Sanders. “I was in awe,” Schulters said. And then in the game, how he controlled and rag-dolled those guards, you couldn’t believe it. “I want do a great job representing all the members of the brotherhood.” “He didn’t speak a lot, but when he spoke, you’d better shut the hell up and pay attention,” Schulters said. He earned an All-Pro nod in 1996, his most exceptional statistical season with 84 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks and two safeties. Young doesn’t see that dichotomy as a contradiction. The Washington defensive front went back to its 2020 ways, making Corral scramble for his life in the pocket. Two plays later, Howell rushed in for his first pro touchdown, pulling the Commanders to within seven. However, it was called back after Harmon stepped out of bounds prior. Howell then took a 7-yard sack, one of his first errors of the day, and following a short run, the third quarter ran out. Another solid catch by Derek White had Carolina knocking on the door, until a Jeremy Reaves sack forced the Panthers to settle for a field goal. Rookie quarterback Sam Howell came into the game and immediately wad set back five yards after a false start. On third down, a diving catch by tight end Giovanni Ricci extended the drive and forced Carolina into hurry up offense. Taylor Heinicke came in for his first series of the game. Following a Washington timeout, Heinicke began to push the ball downfield. The defensive front of the Commanders had a strong drive, forcing a throw away by Darnold on third down. The first play out of the break, Wentz went deep for McLaurin, who just missed an acrobatic catch. Thanks to some key blocks on the left side, Washington was able to cue up their new fight song for the first time all season.

With a new lease on his football life, the onus is now on Wentz to up his level of performance. It wasn’t all great for the Commanders’ offense in the first half. A full-time starter for Washington last season, Taylor Heinicke also threw an interception to conclude a long drive at the end of the first half. Accuracy was not an issue in Wentz’s limited playing time with the quarterback completing 10-of-13 passes for 74 yards. It’s just a continuation of struggles on the part of the former Philadelphia Eagles No. 2 pick over the past couple seasons. Despite Wentz’s issues, Washington exhausted draft capital to acquire him from the Colts this past offseason.

“There were a lot of comments on the sideline. In one sequence, the North Carolina product connected on a 27-yard strike to McGowan, hit Marken Michel for 17 yards and scrambled for a 17-yard score. Gibson coughed up the ball on his second rushing attempt of the game, leading the Panthers to recover at Washington’s 19-yard line. With Washington down 20-6, the fifth-rounder led the Burgundy and Gold to two scoring drives. The running back even contributed in the passing game, catching two passes for 15 yards. The Panthers capitalized on the short field, scoring a touchdown — Sam Darnold found Rashard Higgins for an 8-yard strike — in just three plays. The coach had made clear that he wanted to see the offense executed efficiently, and Wentz helped deliver that on his third and final drive. (“Fight for our Commanders” beat out “Leaders on a mission.”) “We have a lot of potential to have a really fun and explosive offense, but we’re still getting better,” Wentz said. Collected Carson: One preseason game won’t be enough to truly shut down any concerns over Wentz‘s accuracy, but the quarterback sure looked to quiet that narrative as Wentz completed 10 of 13 attempts for 74 yards. The Commanders unveiled the full version of the song before the game after the team spent weeks having fans vote on lyrics for the final verse. Carson Wentz looked sharp in the Commanders’ 23-21 loss Saturday to the Carolina Panthers as he completed 76.9% of his passes over three drives in Washington’s preseason debut.

Amid off-field issues, Commanders face tall task of turning focus to ... (The Washington Post)

Carson Wentz's debut and a beautiful day were not enough to bring much of a crowd to FedEx Field for the Commanders' preseason-opening loss to the Panthers.

It is the job ahead of Rivera, Wentz and the Commanders to make that a relevant question. “I thought the energy and the atmosphere was cool,” Wentz said. Snyder, Wright and the team consistently have tried to paint the picture of a revamped franchise taking proactive steps to move away from its past issues. The team’s efforts to secure public funding for a new stadium in Virginia have been put on hold. He also said he believes the Commanders will be able to stick to their timeline for playing in a new stadium. Tickets reportedly were available on the secondary market for as little as $1, according to the Athletic. I recognize you have made a living on childlike provocation but it needs to be called out. Snyder spent more than 10 hours late last month testifying voluntarily under oath to the committee remotely after his attorney refused to accept service electronically of a subpoena. But on such an idyllic day, with a new team name and a new quarterback unveiled, a better turnout might have been expected if the fan base had not been so disaffected by the franchise’s off-field turmoil. The most enthusiastic and consistent cheers, in fact, came as rookie quarterback Sam Howell engineered a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown drives. The number of people actually in the stands appeared far more modest than the official attendance figure. There were no firm conclusions to be drawn from this low-stakes outing about his ability to give the franchise lasting stability at quarterback.

Fans slowly embrace Commanders after two-year rebrand (The Washington Post)

Washington played its first game as the Commanders Saturday in the preseason opener, beginning a year of change for the team and fan base.

At the stadium Saturday, Colby-Begovich, the vice president of guest experience, said he hoped fans would recognize his team’s work despite the things it couldn’t control, such as the play on the field and the confines of the stadium. Just like in the military, you have to adapt and overcome.” In the first quarter, the team also prompted fans to vote on one of four categories — hog, dog, historical figure or superhero — to help narrow the choices for the mascot the Commanders will unveil at home in Week 17. Some didn’t like the name because, really, what had the team commanded in the last two decades? They put up more than a dozen works by local artists from their initiative “Command the Canvas.” They input new technology to speed up the concession stands, including a program in the upper bowl to order ahead on the Grubhub app. After kickoff, new quarterback Carson Wentz took the field to a tepid round of applause. I don’t want to get ahead of our team being able to tell the real story of the resurgence of the fan base, which is still probably another year or so out.” He bought it because he was excited about the new era. But in the fourth quarter, as the team rallied behind rookie quarterback Sam Howell, it was possible to glimpse the vision optimistic business executives had laid out before the game. But once I hear the new one, I’ll probably fall in love with it, like I did when I was a kid.” Minutes before the game, the team had introduced two versions of the new song. For most of the afternoon, FedEx Field felt as it had for the last decade.

Injuries are largely a luck of the draw and Washington’s luck simply has to improve after last season. This roster has top-15 potential, but that’ll change quickly if a few key players go down. This would normally take the No. 1 spot, but there’s nothing wrong with a second-place finish. It was a long wait and fans can hardly contain their excitement, which speaks to why football is king. Whereas preseason isn’t the time for starting QBs to take the spotlight, it presents a gorgeous opportunity for first- and second-year players and roster bubble players to stake their claim for a role on the team. Regardless of result, quarterback performance or young players emerging, getting through preseason with a clean bill of health is the single most important thing that’ll make Commanders preseason a success.

The third-rounder could never get settled in, as he had to evade constant pressure from the Washington defense. Ekwonu would later come in on Darnold’s group—with Christensen kicking in to left guard, Bradley Bozeman subbing in for Elflein, Jordan shifting to right guard and Cameron Erving taking over all the way to the right. Carolina’s other high-profile battle sits just in front of the aforementioned one—at left tackle. So, we leave this portion of the battle where we came in on it—with Mayfield as the favorite. Darnold finished his outing completing two of his three throws for 16 yards and the score. Not to be outdone or overlooked, Darnold made the most out of what he was given.

5 takeaways from Washington's preseason opener against Carolina (Washington Commanders)

The Washington Commanders have wrapped up their preseason opener, and despite two rushing touchdowns from Sam Howell, they could not hang onto the lead and ...

That scoring drive was a foundation to build on for the rest of the week. Plays like Daniel Wise’s sack in the second quarter (it was part of a drive that ended in a turnover on downs for the Panthers) and a three-and-out in the fourth quarter were bright spots, but they were bookended by backbreaking mental errors. As great as the scoring drive was for Washington's confidence, it still took the offense a full quarter to get any kind of traction. But Howell's passing ability was more noteworthy, and as Rivera said, he showed much of what he put on display in college. Howell ended the day completing 9-of-16 passes for 143 yards and two rushing touchdowns, both of which came within about six minutes of each other. Matt Cole had the longest return of the day with 27 yards, but it's clear that Washington still needs an answer for who will return kicks in 2022. His style is a welcome change of pace for the backfield. With the exception of the scoring drive, all three of those drives ended in four plays or less. "I thought that third drive was good for us," Wentz said after the game. Wentz was the star of the series, as he ended his day completing 10-of-13 passes for 74 yards. Many of the highs he showed in Week 3 of camp were apparent on the third drive. After punting the ball and coughing up a fumble, Washington orchestrated a 14-play, 82-yard drive that ended with a Brian Robinson touchdown.

For now, it's a step in the right direction. Players seem to be adjusted to him commanding respect and taking charge at the line of scrimmage. How about on the next series when he connected with McLaurin for a gain of 16? That was followed up with a swing pass to rookie running back Brian Robinson for a gain of nine. It's been a point of emphasis for Wentz throughout training camp to focus on efficient throws rather than big ones. One way keep the starting job with balance throws and proper decision-making. And while critics will pan his decision-making to short throws instead of deep passes, that's not what Washington is looking for in a game with little vaule. But now at 29, Wentz has to earn the starting role past Week 18. Carson Wentz was given a "pitch count'' for his Washington Commanders debut. The one that fans remember from his 2017 MVP-caliber season is what many in the building are hoping for. "I thought he went through his progressions the way he needed to. He could, depending on what version takes the field during the regular season.
