Head coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday that Smith has taken an early lead in the position battle and will start Saturday, though Carroll did add that both Smith and Lock would get equal reps with the starting receivers.

- When the 49ers rush an extra defensive back on the field in passing situations, one of their three starting linebackers is going to have to come off the field. While Charles Cross has long been expected to start for the Seahawks on the blindside as the No. 9 overall pick in the draft, it appears that third-round pick Abraham Lucas is currently favored to man the tackle spot opposite Cross. Their first drive against Pittsburgh went about as poorly as it gets, with missed tackles and a blown coverage leading to a touchdown. The Seahawks got their first flash of hope on the third drive of the game for their defense. Seattle’s defense started the preseason on sloppy footing.
9:24 p.m. – What Went Wrong: Often in the second half of an early preseason game, neither team is able to generate much offense. But in Seahawks vs.
Kenny Pickett came on and drove the team 43 yards in five plays, with the touchdown coming on a 24-yard pass to Tyler Vaughns, who caught the ball for a short gain but turned it into much more when Josh Valentine-Turner missed a tackle and opened up a lane to the end zone. 8:50 p.m. – What Went Wrong: The Seahawks received the second half kickoff, and 4:23 later the score was 17-17 as a result of a nine-play, 73-yard drive that was capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Drew Lock to tight end Dareke Young with 10:37 remaining in the third quarter. The touchdown was a 17-yard pass from Drew Lock to DeeJay Dallas, and the conversion was a pass to Travis Homer. Following a 2-point conversion pass to Connor Heyward, the Steelers led, 25-17, with 6:44 left in the third quarter. The biggest play on the drive was a 21-yard pass to Cade Johnson that gave the Seahawks a first-and-goal at the 7-yard line. Steelers, the opposite was the case – neither team showed much of an ability to stop the other. The Steelers led, 14-0, with 1:39 remaining in the first quarter. Shortly after the drive that ended in a touchdown to give the Steelers a 25-17 lead, the Seahawks drove 55 yards in five plays and tacked on the 2-point conversion to tie the game, 25-25, with 13:32 left in the fourth quarter. Arthur Maulet dropped Penny Hart for a 2-yard loss after a short completion; Smith threw incomplete on second down; and on third-and-12 Damontae Kazee limited a short pass to Colby Parkinson to a 5-yard gain. 7:48 p.m. – What Went Right: Coach Mike Tomlin says one of the hallmarks of a good defense is standing up in the red zone to make the opponent settle for a field goal instead of ending up with a touchdown. The other third-down conversion came on a third-and-6 when Trubisky found Olszewski for a 25-yard gain that set up Trubisky's subsequent throw to Olszewski for the touchdown. 7:36 p.m. – What Went Right: The Seahawks had a third-and-1 that turned into a punting situation when Myles Jack dropped Kenneth Walker for a 1-yard loss.

Drew Lock made his case to be the starter in his Seattle Seahawks preseason debut.
The reason for that touchdown? Smith finished the night 10 of 15 for 101 yards with an 85.7 quarterback rating while leading the Seahawks on one touchdown drive. That is not to say that Smith was a liability or even that he underperformed.
Seahawks football is back! Seattle kicked off their preseason late Saturday afternoon in a rare exhibition thriller, as they fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers ...
Mafe finished the game with two sacks, a tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Homer made the most of his four carries by scampering for 41-yards and catching a crucial two-point conversion to tie the game at 25-25. Seattle’s defense has surrendered yardage at a historic clip in each of the last two years, due mostly in part to their inconsistencies at making opposing quarterbacks even remotely uncomfortable. Smith led Seattle on a nine-play, 61-yard scoring drive to get within a score before halftime, finishing the game completing 10-of-15 passes for 101 yards and a rushing touchdown. It’s always worth noting to take everything – the good, the bad and the ugly – with a healthy grain of salt as teams shake the offseason rust. On Saturday night, Geno Smith and Drew Lock made strong cases they deserve to be the No. 1 option when the Denver Broncos roll into Seattle Week 1.

Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock throws a 3-yard dart to WR Dareke Young for the touchdown against the Steelers. Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith runs it in himself for a 2-yard touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the preseason. Seattle Seahawks RB Travis Homer leaks out of the backfield for a 25-yard catch and run on a pass from QB Geno Smith in Saturday's preseason matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Seahawks' 2022 draft class played a lot in the preseason opener in Pittsburgh, and here's how they did with thoughts from Pete Carroll.
He tallied 30 yards and caught a touchdown from Lock in the third quarter. “Maybe (there were) some jitters and all that. He also dropped one pass from Smith. He ran the ball five times for 19 yards and caught his lone target for 11 yards. “Those guys can make all those plays. “I thought they got beat around a little bit. “A great stop by Boye Mafe on a beautiful play,” Carroll said. That play resulted in an easy Pittsburgh touchdown. Both the young tackles did a nice job and got some good stuff done,” Carroll said in his postgame press conference. They all had numbers.” “That’s what we were hoping to see from him.” But overall, the coaches were really pleased with what they accomplished today.”
Geno Smith was sharp in situations while starting. Drew Lock was good in 2nd half until his fumble sets up Steelers' winning score in Seahawks' preseason ...
It’s a play he’s made repeatedly in the first 10 days of training camp, impressing Seahawks coaches. He decisively threw to Young, who was covered at the goal line in the left slot. Woolen missed a tackle on a long Steelers run on the opening drive. But then new tight end Noah Fant, acquired from Denver in the Wilson trade, had time and several yards of space to get his second foot down to complete a catch on an accurate throw by Smith. He did not, for an incomplete pass. Smith’s incomplete throws included a drop by Melton, a drop by Young, new tight end Noah Fant not getting his second foot in bounds when he had enough time and yards of space to do so, and a Steelers defensive lineman batting down Smith’s pass at the line. Smith did what Lock’s been doing in camp, escaping a sack and running for a first down on third and medium, past midfield. His best play was when the Seahawks called an all-verticals play of deep routes into the end zone by their wide receivers. Linebacker Mark Robinson zoomed off the left edge of the offensive line crashed into Lock and forced a fumble. It was the second of two sacks for Mafe, the speed-rushing second-round draft choice from Minnesota. But on the first play after the turnover, Lock failed to recognize the only unaccounted for, free-rushing Steeler for the original play call. He clapped and tapped the knees of each of his starting offensive linemen to encourage them for a job well done. Waldron and Carroll stress 4-minute offense late in a half and game. The good from the 25-year-old acquired in the trade of Russell Wilson to Denver in March happened immediately.
Pittsburgh Steelers' football is back. So are our weekly winners/losers lists. The highlights and lowlights from the team's preseason opener 32-25 win.
And he got into the game ahead of Master Teague. But he did little with the chance. On the plus side, the Steelers’ DBs were active and aggressive. He missed the back half of this week’s set of practices with an unknown injury. I wrote that above paragraph before the Steelers’ final drive, Pickett leading the Steelers downfield and connecting with Tyler Vaughns for the game-winning score. Kenny Pickett – Thought all the quarterbacks looked solid tonight to varying degrees but Pickett was good in his NFL debut. Norwood has been used as the dime defender in training camp and his man-cover ability is getting him a spot on the field this year, especially with some other injuries in that DB room. A path to the 53 will be tough but he’s setting himself up to still land on the practice squad as insurance behind Gunner Olszewski. He’s best against the run and when asked to play underneath routes, including a third down stop on a slant over the middle. He kicked things off with a 38 yard punt return left side and followed things up on a quick jet run right side for 38 yards, creating in open field. Steven Sims – Sims is a small/speed guy and someone who needs to make plays in open grass. Haeg should easily be the team’s swing tackle and a stopgap option should a starter miss a game or two. Tre Norwood – Norwood was strong in the red zone in this game with multiple end zone breakups.
Veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky made a great first impression. Rookie wide receiver George Pickens did, too. As did rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett.
He broke another tackle on the way to a 15-yard gain on second-and-10 from the Seahawks' 34 but fumbled at the end of the run (wide receiver Miles Boykin recovered). the Seattle Seahawks at Acrisure Stadium Trubisky finished 4-for-7 for 63 yards and a touchdown in his two series of work. Seattle tied the game at 25-25 with 13:22 left in regulation on a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Drew Lock to running back DeeJay Dallas and a two-point pass from Lock to running back Travis Homer. That march stalled at the Seattle 3 and the Steelers settled for a 21-yard field goal from kicker Nick Sciba and a 17-3 lead at the conclusion of a 17-play possession that covered 81 yards in 8:22. Pickens, drafted on the second round out of Georgia, caught a pass from Trubisky for a 9-yard gain on the first play of the preseason, and then a 26-yard fade from quarterback Mason Rudolph for a touchdown that finished off the Steelers' third possession.
The Seahawks offense finally managed to find the end zone against the Steelers with about 21 seconds left in the first half. Watch quarterback Geno Smith ...
For the half, Smith went 10/15 for 101 yards, one sack and an 85.7 passer rating. Watch quarterback Geno Smith scramble for a score. That capped off the best drive of the game so far from No. 7.
Who stood out for the right reasons, and for the wrong ones, as Seattle drops its first game of the preseason.
On 4th-and-1 at the Seahawks 44, Mafe chased down Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett on a play-action bootleg for a sack to give Seattle the ball in Steelers territory with the score tied at 25 in the fourth quarter. In the final drive of the half, Smith made a wise decision to keep the ball on a run-pass option play on third-and-goal from the 2 for the touchdown, capping an exciting 2-minute drill for the Seahawks. Smith was far from perfect. With 4:28 left in the first half, Smith was in prime position to lead the Seahawks on a potential deep drive, while keeping Pittsburgh’s offense n the sidelines. With coach Pete Carroll continuously stressing the importance of ‘four-minute offense,’ the Seahawks must show improvement in this area moving forward. Battling against Pittsburgh’s first-unit offense for much of the first half, Smith went 10 of 16 for 101 yards. Of course, there will be areas for the team or individuals to seek improvement.

And I think if there wasn't a rookie sign on the roster you'd think they've been playing for a bit." All three backs had strong contributions to the offensive effort on the night. Bryant was in good position on the play, but a push-off from Pickens that went uncalled helped create the space for the catch to be made. And the times that we had rushes is when we got covered up a little bit, we didn't see what we needed to see and then we held the football and allowed them to rush it. Woolen held terrific trail position on a fade throw to Kevin Rader and had tight coverage on another completed pass over the middle later on. "I think they did a great job," Lock said of Cross and Lucas. "Those guys are in-tune to their stuff. The touchdown to Dallas was a perfect check down that allowed Dallas to turn it into a score. "Yes, we'd like the score to be different and we like a couple things in that game that happened differently but overall, a lot of good. We can fix the things we need to fix." He had two drops and Noah [Fant]'s got to stay in bounds on the ball on the sidelines and he hits them all. Smith started the contest and completed 10-of-15 passes for 101 yards and scored on a 2-yard rushing touchdown as well. After two weeks of practices against only each other, it was the first benchmark outing against a team in different colors.
With so many Pittsburgh Steelers starters sidelined, reserves made their case for a roster spot as the first round of cuts approaches.
On the first play of the second half, a whiff on Bo Melton led to a 39-yard gain and an eventual touchdown. Offensive line - Mitch Trubisky looked good, throwing for 63 yards and a touchdown in limited action but it was despite the pass-blocking performance of his offensive line. His stat line - 9-15 for 93 yards and a score - doesn't tell the whole story. Pickett finished the evening 13-15 for 95 yards and two touchdowns, the second of which came with three seconds left in a tie ball game. Anthony McFarland - In the absence of Najee Harris and Benny Snell on Saturday night, there was ample room for Steelers backups to show off and Anthony McFarland did just that. Kenny Pickett - Usually the second half of a preseason game yields little worth watching but that was not the case on in the opener.
Usually preseason games are slogs to sit through but for some reason the opening week of exhibitions has been pretty entertaining and high scoring across ...
Bryant is a willing tackler and stuck to his assignment much of the evening. You do not try and pick up the ball on a hop with defenders nearby and no chance of a long return. Won’t necessarily be indicative of what Shane Waldron will do in the regular season but I do expect a lot of PA regardless of who’s starting. The defensive side of the 2019 class has been perplexing. Parkinson had just three targets, with one catch, an incomplete pass on what could’ve been pass interference, and a drop after he took contact. It’s preseason so I don’t care about the broadcast being akin to your typical regular season national game, this is a Seahawks production and I was entertained. Kenneth Walker III had 19 yards on 5 carries and a catch for 11 yards and while he lacked any “wow” plays it was an alright day at the office. Unfortunately a hidden fact of last year’s defense was that they were one of the worst in the NFL at broken tackles. DeeJay Dallas had the best night at 90 total yards on 11 touches and a receiving touchdown, with Travis Homer making his case for more of a role in the offense thanks to 41 rush yards and 33 receiving yards on just six combined touches. There’s been some hype for Young as another Ricardo Lockette type of talent and he flashed some of it on offense. That ending sucked but all I could muster up was an almost chuckled “oh noooooooo” both for Drew Lock’s fumble and the touchdown allowed. I don’t care about the win/loss result (and neither should you) as much as individual performances and hoping to hell no one gets injured.

While Seattle lost to the Steelers 32-25 in the team’s first preseason game of the year, the performance of the offensive line was extremely encouraging – especially when it came to run blocking. Young led the team with four receptions for 30 yards including a three-yard TD from Lock that capped the drive that began with Melton’s catch. Melton had two catches for 47 yards including a 39-yarder from Lock that led to a TD drive in the third quarter. Sure, it’s just the preseason, and the Steelers had a lot of backups and deep reserves on defense as the game wore on. He had two sacks and a forced fumble as well as a tackle on a 38-yard punt return by Steven Sims that might have saved a touchdown. But he may make the decision a difficult one. Injuries to starters Sidney Jones IV and Artie Burns meant the Seahawks began the game with Coby Bryant and Tariq Woolen as the starting cornerbacks. And even if it was just one play, it’s the kind of play that Lock has to show he can make (or avoid) to earn Carroll’s trust as the starter. In the second significant test of the quarterback battle between Geno Smith and Drew Lock to take over for Wilson, Lock again seemed to have the better day — at least numerically. The recovery allowed the Steelers to drive for the winning score with three seconds left. The Seahawks had just 14 yards rushing on five attempts on their first two series before Lucas entered. The running game also got going once he was in the game. Smith played behind the Seahawks’ No. 1 offensive line, which would seem a significant advantage, while Lock played behind the backups.
A pair of Seahawks Legends had entertaining and insightful debuts during the KING 5 broadcast of Seattle's preseason debut at Pittsburgh.
He also broke down some of the nuance of playing nose tackle when discussing Poona Ford's play—though he couldn't resist taking a playful shot at centers for generally being the weakest player on the offensive line. But it was Bennett's blunt humor that stole the show and made Seattle's preseason finale at Dallas—this week's game against Chicago will be broadcast nationally on ESPN—feel like must-see TV even if the final score may not have a ton of importance. Bennett's pass-rush expertise showed when discussed the nuances of a nice Alton Robinson pass-rush.

With a solid performance in his first preseason contest, Jones could be a player to keep an eye on next week against the Chicago Bears. Seahawks running back DeeJay Dallas was the workhorse back for Seattle against the Steelers, leading the team in carries on the ground. With Seahawks star linebacker Jordyn Brooks sitting out today's contest, the depth of Seattle's linebacker corps was asked to step up in his absence. Dallas led the way early in the fourth, catching a receiving touchdown to put Seattle in position to tie at 25 with a successful 2-point conversion completion to running back Travis Homer. Dallas is known for providing a spark for Seattle with his explosive running style, and he didn't disappoint Saturday. On the day, Dallas finished with 10 carries for 73 yards on the ground, and 1 reception for 17 yards and a touchdown. Seahawks defensive tackle Poona Ford was all over the field Saturday, playing a majority of snaps for Seattle in the first half on defense as well as special teams. On the ground, Homer averaged 10 yards per carry, with 4 carries for 41 yards in the first half.
The rookie pass rusher was elated after a two-sack performance in his preseason debut, but focused on the road ahead.
