Veteran Saints players like WR Kevin White and TE Nick Vannett could jeopardize their roster spots without a big game against the Texans.
Book is genuinely one of the player I’m most excited to see in Houston. You can see how he’s progressed as a passer in camp, but his abilities with the ball in his hands as a runner often get lost in the non-contact environment. Book has a real opportunity ahead of him this preseason to establish who he is after the general disaster last year’s Monday Night Football matchup was against the Miami Dolphins which left him with unfair circumstances and therefore mostly unusable evaluations. Vannett was brought in to be a veteran leader at tight end, but now he has a lot more competition in the room. Evans missed his 2020 year due to being on the physically unable to performance list as the season opened and did not play in 2021. It’s a crowded room at wideout all of a sudden in New Orleans, but a solid set of preseason performances could carve him out a spot on the practice squad at the least. The Saints will open their exhibition play against the Houston Texans, allowing fans a first look at some of the new additions on the roster.

Yes, this is going to be a bit of a hassle. These same issues are going to occur on the west side of the stadium during the 2023 season when the same construction work occurs there. The best way to navigate the east side of the stadium this season is outside the Dome — not inside. Your game-day experience is going to be affected on that side of the stadium. And until it’s completed, you’re going to have to endure the pains of progress. The makeover is going to be spectacular when finished.

Dalton connected with both Callaway and Smith on the scoring drive. “This is definitely, on paper, one of the better teams that I’ve been on. “Well, that was one of the big reasons why we brought Andy here,” Allen said earlier this week. And the knee that was injured last season looks to be doing fine. But landing the veteran Dalton could end up being just as important. He capped it off with a 9-yard screen to Dwayne Washington.

On the team's first offensive drive of the second half, he took a holding penalty. He had a nice kick return, some good runs, and a 13-yard catch out of the backfield. He ended up finishing out with 5 tackles (4 solo, 1 assisted), 2 tackles for loss, a pick, a pass breakup, and a special teams tackle. You can't do afford to do that in a close battle. Allen: 'I saw a lot of things that I really liked out there in the game'
*How was it to go through the process with Pete Carmichael? *"I thought Pete did a great job. So, I was there for him the whole time." I thought both coordinators did a heck of a job calling the game, getting the call in. Obviously it's hard to comment on a lot of specifics until you get a chance to get out and watch the tape. But it's good to get the game action. "You can't put the ball on the ground. If you put the ball on the ground, that's an issue." You got a very small sample size and some of the other stuff he did looked pretty nice. "It's just part of when you're in those kind of two-minute type of situations, and I think we got to do a little bit better job of the protection there. I thought we did a couple of good things in the run game. I think Andy did a really good job of operating the offense. "Yeah, I thought he did a nice job moving us down the field.
If last night's preseason opener is any indication, the Saints are in capable hands if backup quarterback Andy Dalton has to play this season.
At the very least, he should be a reliable insurance policy for the Saints this fall. For his career, Dalton has thrown for over 35,000 yards and 226 touchdowns. Dalton played in eight games for the Chicago Bears last season, starting six.

Dalton showed poise and accuracy from the pocket and was decisive in his reads. The Saints look loaded at wide receiver this season. Book's interception came on a tipped pass that could have been caught, but the throw was off the mark. He was physical and precise with his routes and showed good concentration in traffic. Dalton got the start at quarterback because Jameis Winston was resting a sprained foot suffered in practice last week. He was indecisive with the football and seemed to have difficulty reading the defense. Several New Orleans starters on both sides of the ball didn't suit up at all, with most others ending their night after a series or two.

Last year, Dixon’s preseason play would have made him a near-lock for the Saints roster, but this year’s wide receiver battle is virtually impossible to predict. New Orleans’ linebacker unit suffered a blow with Kwon Alexander’s offseason departure, and the majority of the Saints’ backup linebackers are young and inexperienced: Zack Baun, Nephi Sewell, Isaiah Pryor, and Hansen. Dixon posted three catches for 33 yards in an impressive performance that should move him up the depth chart.

Dixon is up for the challenge. He was "excited" to catch his first football in the NFL. Quarterback Ian Book and Dai'Jean have developed a strong bond. And as far as blocking, I can block better." Day in, day out, I'm studying, trying to make sure I know my assignments." "I'm excited about being here, and I'm ready to get this thing on the road… "It doesn't matter where you're at, as long as you put in the work, someone is going to see you," Dixon said. "I've always believed that I belonged here," Dixon said.
