5 storylines to watch in Bears' preseason opener vs. Chiefs (Chicago Bears Wire)

While the Bears have moved on with a new regime, something tells me some fans are going to let Nagy hear it one last time. Matt Adams and Joe Thomas are battling for the starting SAM linebacker position, which could come down to preseason performance. We won’t see the starters long during Saturday’s preseason game, which means players further down the depth chart will get their opportunities to shine. Last year’s rookies Teven Jenkins and Larry Borom will also be making a push for playing time, and they’re sure to get plenty of it with the second-team offense. But given the object of preseason, as far as veterans, is to get out of their healthy, perhaps that’s not such a bad thing. The offensive line has been solid during training camp, now we’ll see how that translates to live action.

That journey began with this first offseason, but he likely has his eyes on some familiar faces as the Bears prepare to host the Chiefs. As the Kansas City Chiefs travel to face the Chicago Bears on Saturday afternoon, a preseason matchup really isn’t anything to get all that excited about for most franchises.

NFL preseason 2022: Who is playing in Chiefs vs. Bears in Week 1? (DraftKings Nation)

The Chiefs and Bears will face off in Week 1 of NFL preseason on Saturday. We take a look at who's likely to see playing time.

For Chicago, Week 1 of the preseason should be the start of trying to identify what they actually have at the receiver position. We should see Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the field since Reid said the starters would play for a quarter. Both Peterman and Siemian have starting snaps on their resume, so their preseason performance will likely be the deciding factor for the coaching staff.

Young spent more than two weeks in the hospital and needed extensive surgery just to save his leg from complications. “I learned from his toughness and mental fortitude, from his study habits — he would be the first guy in there, last guy to leave. The Youngs also endured the unimaginable pain of losing their son, 15-year-old Colby, to pediatric brain cancer in 2016. Like the rest of Young’s teammates, he was amazed by Young’s comeback for the 1999 season opener. Young was the bridge to the future for a defense stocked with veteran talent including Dana Stubblefield, Rickey Jackson, Ken Norton Jr., Tim McDonald, Merton Hanks and Deion Sanders. “I was in awe,” Schulters said. And then in the game, how he controlled and rag-dolled those guards, you couldn’t believe it. “I want do a great job representing all the members of the brotherhood.” Local fans can watch the game for free via a trial of DirecTV Stream –– which carries the local NBC (Kansas City) and FOX (Chicago) affiliates. “He didn’t speak a lot, but when he spoke, you’d better shut the hell up and pay attention,” Schulters said. He earned an All-Pro nod in 1996, his most exceptional statistical season with 84 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks and two safeties. Young doesn’t see that dichotomy as a contradiction.

Key takeaways from first half of Chiefs vs. Bears preseason opener (Chiefs Wire)

Here are a few things we learned about the Kansas City Chiefs in the first half of the preseason opener:

I’m not sure the usage of 21 personnel was anything more than a quirk of the preseason, but it’s good to see them getting some practice out of that look regardless. We knew the field was in poor shape well ahead of the game, but it wasn’t right up until kickoff that the grounds crew for the Bears decided to do anything about it. It was a good start to the preseason for Kansas City, with the starters on both sides of the ball looking sharp.

Second-year quarterback Justin Fields showed flashes of brilliance during the Chicago Bears' preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday ...

Justin Fields has taken three hits on the first seven plays from scrimmage, including a cheap shot as he was sliding. I can't figure out why that wasn't a personal foul penalty. Fields is the biggest key to the Bears' success moving forward, and while he continues to showcase a skill set that suggests he can be something special, the front office clearly has a lot of work to do when it comes to surrounding him with talent. The disparity in these grades handed out to Fields and the offensive line for their performance Saturday says it all about the Bears' issues: The biggest takeaway in terms of social media reaction to the Bears' performance Saturday was general praise for Fields, coupled with criticism for the offensive line for allowing the franchise quarterback to take so many hits: Fields was constantly under siege during his rookie season, and both fans and experts seemed to take notice Saturday that more of the same was happening in the early stages of his second NFL season.

Bears defeat Chiefs in preseason opener | Game Recap (ChicagoBears.com)

The Bears scored 19 unanswered points in the second half to edge the Chiefs 19-14 in Saturday's preseason home opener at Soldier Field.

Patrick Mahomes' 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Blake Bell gave the Chiefs a 7-0 lead with 7:20 left in the first quarter. Cairo Santos then connected on a 20-yard field goal, giving the Bears their first lead of the game at 16-14. The Chiefs then went three-and-out and after a 35-yard punt, the Bears took over at their own 48. Again, we took the ball away a couple of times on the short field and we protected the ball on offense, which is really good. "Just the chemistry between us and, of course, the work we put in in the offseason, that just shows right there." Fields complimented Mooney's hands on the catch, but wasn't surprised about the connection.

Ryan Poles' First Bears Rookie Class Had A Hell Of A Debut (sportsmockery.com)

Several Chicago Bears rookies made big plays in the win over Kansas City. It was enough to think Ryan Poles knows what he's doing.

Ryan Poles signed him as an undrafted rookie out of Minnesota. Then he delivered a clutch sack late in the 4th quarter to help seal a 19-14 win. The young linebacker was everywhere, making a strong statement for a roster spot. He did it through power and effort, shedding two blocks and dragging the QB to the ground before he could escape. He was masterful most of the game. That includes two of them inside the five. He also had a nifty 27-yard run earlier in the game. Obviously, he needs to work on his technique and fundamentals, but his physical upside is terrifying. The preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs would make an excellent measuring stick for the Bears. They’re a Super Bowl contender with one of the deeper rosters in the league. That shock became intrigue when he kept doing the same in training camp. It is exciting to imagine what he can become with time and experience. He certainly leaned on his scouting department come spring when the Bears drafted 11 players and signed more than a dozen afterward. During one sequence, he had a big hit, a tackle for a loss, and a near-interception to end a Chiefs drive.

Justin Fields was limited to three series in Chicago’s preseason opener, so Bears fans got plenty of Trevor Siemian and Nathan Peterman on Saturday. Siemian led the Bears to three scoring drives in the beginning of the second half, including two touchdowns and a field goal. No doubt the biggest dud of the game was the Soldier Field turf, which was in rough shape for an NFL preseason game that left many furious and concerned for player safety. He had seven punts for 298 yards (averaging 42.6 yards per punt), including three punts downed inside the 20-yard line. For someone who just joined the team and is looking to push for a roster spot, that’s the kind of performance you need. Brisker has been making a name for himself taking the ball away this summer, and he nearly had an interception early in the first half that went just off his hands. Rookie safety Jaquan Brisker has been one of the standouts since his arrival in Chicago, and he was itching to get to live action. Ebner also returned two kickoffs for 53 yards (26.5 average). Ebner continues to flash this summer, and he’s going to carve out a nice role for himself on this team. Undrafted rookie linebacker Jack Sanborn stole the show during Saturday’s preseason win, and he made quite a push for a roster spot. Brisker had an impressive outing in his preseason debut, where he showed his ability as a physical, ballhawking safety. He had six carries for a team-high 31 yards (5.2 average) and added one catch for a 12-yard touchdown. Ebner was impressive both on the ground and out of the backfield. The Chiefs scored all 14 of their points in the first half.

The offensive performance wasn't an explosive one for the Chicago Bears, but there were signs Luke Getsy has them on the right track.

This is less about design and more about just being good about finding the right matchup. Dante Pettis (#86) leaks out to the sideline, forcing another corner to go with him. Siemian finds him late over the middle for the score. What stood out the most was how good the young coordinator was at calling situational football. Brad Biggs offers his 10 thoughts after every Chicago Bears game, this time a victory for Matt Eberflus' debut with notes on Justin Fields and the Roquan ...

It gives the Bears only Monday and Tuesday to practice at Halas Hall and then requires the farthest travel of the season. The vast majority of punts have been made by three players in the last 21 seasons — Brad Maybard, Adam Podlesh and Pat O’Donnell. The Bears chose to move on from the veteran O’Donnell and bring in a young leg, and Gill performed well. That’s truly a partnership and to me, that’s the big process we’re going through.” “We talked about what we’re looking for in this game is, first of all, the game-day operation and how we did as a group,” Eberflus said. - Poles reaches the point at which he decides Smith wants more money than the Bears want to pay and declares he wants players who want to be at Halas Hall, likely deciding that Smith probably isn’t the difference between a six-win season and a nine-win season in 2022. He was electric in the open field on a 27-yard run, caught a 12-yard pass for a touchdown from Trevor Siemian and had a 34-yard kickoff return. Another issue is how this offense will better support Fields. A lot of analysts have said Fields is in a far better position with Getsy as the play caller than he was a year ago, that the scheme will make a huge difference. “When I think about what Getsy is going to do with Fields, it’s got to be a heavily defined passing game where you give him clear and defined reads off of play-action and then you count on him to make some special plays on top of that because of his athletic traits. “If he doesn’t have a lot of turnovers and he is getting the ball out quick, I feel like that will be considered a success no matter what the team’s record is or the stats because they’re just not very good around him. Expect Poles to churn the roster continuously as he looks for parts that fit and discards ones that don’t. The Bears need to see if Fields can be the quarterback of the future, and it’s going to be a weekly challenge without a ton of high-end talent around him. Sure, it wouldn’t mean a thing, but it ought to show the team has apotent offense that is getting ready to roll in the regular season. That’s not a condemnation where the Bears are at offensively with a quarterback in Year 2, a line that will have growing pains and a wide receiver group that will look undermanned even when fully staffed — which it wasn’t for this game.

He was up at the line of scrimmage often, looking to assist in run support. He had a great effort on an end-around play, gaining eight yards, and proving that Luke Getsy’s offense is going to utilize players in a variety of ways. He looked shifty as he did in college, but the most impressive part was the way he ran with purpose. Fields also used his legs a couple of times, showing fans that this offense is going to allow him to be far more comfortable in his second year.

I figured he had a great shot at making the 53-man roster before seeing him play yesterday, but considering his playing time and impact, he could be a lock. In the first half of the game, when it was mostly starters vs starters, the perennial playoff contending Chiefs had the advantage 14-0. The Chicago Bears knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs in a game that truly was a tale of two halves. Chicago had more total yards (285 to 205) and they had the edge in time of possession (32:40 to 27:20). The Chiefs were penalized less than the Bears (2 for 11 yards to 5 for 32), and they had the edge in third-down percentage (43.8% to 37.5%). Rookie Trestan Ebner led the team in rushing with 31 yards on 6 carries, and he had a 12-yard TD catch. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the top of the Chiefs' depth chart was better than the players atop Chicago’s depth chart, but it’s a testament to general manager Ryan Poles and the coaching staff that the bottom of the depth chart looked so good.

Former QB Already Calling Luke Getsy An Upgrade Over Matt Nagy (sportsmockery.com)

Jim Miller hasn't seen much of Luke Getsy running the Bears offense, but he's seen enough to know he is better than Matt Nagy.

That is coupled with a steady dose of running the football. He is helping Fields by adjusting the system to his strengths. The other eight snaps he played were hand-offs to Khalil Herbert and Equanimeous St. Brown. That is a 55-45 ratio pass-to-run. Fields’ numbers weren’t eye-popping at 4-of-7 for 48 yards, but he didn’t turn the ball over, and two of his incompletions were dropped by Herbert. He operated the offense well. You’ve got to do what is best to protect the young quarterback, whether it was Mitch (Trubisky) or this guy, and it’s got to be run-based first.” The 49ers (and) Kyle Shanahan, they use (fullback Kyle) Juszczyk a lot, they do a lot of 12 (one running back, two wide receivers, two tight ends). Even look in Green Bay last year — the Packers were second in the NFL in 12 personnel…

One Chicago Bears O-Lineman Had An Excellent Preseason Opener (sportsmockery.com)

The Chicago Bears wanted guys to seize their opportunity in the preseason opener. A forgotten face at tackle did exactly that.

The second-year tackle was great in his first game action of the year and against a pretty strong defensive front too. Either that or convince the coaches to let him try his hand at guard. Teams that run the scheme like to run the ball off tackle. That means the guys on the edge must be able to move people. As of right now, he is the heavy favorite to be their swing tackle or primary backup at both spots. He didn’t play in the opener.

What Matt Eberflus Proved in Win (Bear Maven)

Here's why Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus and his coaching staff are the good from Saturday's 19-14 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs, ...

They won by applying the HITS principle and winning with hustle, intensity, by taking care of the football and with intelligence. This very first preseason game is proof they made the right choice for a head coach, and that's not to slight other candidates. Players at the bottom of these expanded rosters across the NFL are extremely similar in talent level. They don't allow music fans to come out in cleats and rip up the grass on a wet field. Beyond that, they won by playing complementary and opportunistic football the way the coaching staff has preached since arriving. That being said, Fields also was right after the game when he said other quarterbacks get that call. They've been dumping sand in the divots on the field, as is done commonly on a golf course, and haven't had grass growing properly while they've let the field be used all offseason for soccer matches. The NFL hasn't called it unfit for play, though. It wasn't just the sacks. Three first-half sacks were allowed, although the second team got blame for one of these. Matt Eberflus tried to soften criticism of the field conditions and park district workers who maintain it, or are supposed to maintain it. The grass has been damaged through overuse and improper maintenance.
