Former President Donald Trump on Friday denied a report from The Washington Post that said FBI agents were looking for classified documents related to ...

Details of documents sought by the FBI, such as whether the nuclear weapons in question were tied to the United States or another country, were not immediately clear. The explosive report came just hours after Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday that he "personally approved" the warrant to search Trump’s Florida home Monday and that the Department of Justice had filed a motion to make the warrant public. On his Truth Social platform, Trump said that "Nuclear weapons is a hoax, just like Russia, Russia, Russia was a hoax," referring to then-special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia. Trump attacked the officials involved with the search of his home, calling them "sleazy."

And then it was also very joyous when, in 2018, I traveled to Sri Lanka — I was in a cab and the cab driver, when he found out I was from Afghanistan, his first question was — we have a very well-known cricket player, [Rashid Khan], and he asked me, ‘Do you know him?’ And I said, ‘Of course I do.’ And then we talked about cricket. Raz: Those who worked with U.S. allies, those who worked with the Afghan government, with the Afghan security forces — we all know that their lives are in danger. But it was hurtful to think that it happened in less than a year, and it happened in the heart of Kabul. For my generation, it really brought [back] the terrible memories [of what] we had gone through post-9/11. It took us such a long time to [recover from] Afghanistan being linked to terrorist groups like al-Qaeda. And now, I think, to be known for that once again is very hurtful. When I first came to the U.S. in 2004, for quite a few years whenever I would go anywhere — I’d maybe be taking a cab or getting an ice cream — when people would find out I'm from Afghanistan, a lot of times the question would be ‘Oh, do you know where is Osama bin Laden?’ And I would feel hurt. My extended family — my aunts, uncles, cousins, the rest of the family — they are still back in Afghanistan. Some of my family members worked in the government before. In terms of the finances, the good news was that the embassy building is the property of Afghan people. Has he been able to join you in the U.S.? What about your friends and family? Have they been able to stay in the U.S.? It’s a humanitarian catastrophe in terms of people being hungry, in terms of people having no job, in terms of shortages of food and the health situation. We tried to see how we could process their paperwork, advocate on their behalf, link them to the institutions and individuals who were helping them out. It helped us for the next two to three months, and then there was no more salary. Late Thursday night, the far-right House Freedom Caucus cancelled their press conference on the FBI search due to a “scheduling conflict.” A spokesperson said in a press release that it would be rescheduled.

Donald Trump calls nuclear docs claim a 'hoax' (New York Post)

Nuclear weapons issue is a Hoax, just like Russia," Trump posted to Truth Social Friday morning.

“The Department does not take such a decision lightly,” the AG said. Made them wait outside in the heat, wouldn’t let them get even close – said ‘ABSOLUTELY NOT,’” Trump went on, before again suggesting that federal agents might have planted information during the search. Why wouldn’t the FBI allow the inspection of areas at Mar-a-Lago with our lawyer’s [sic], or others, present.

The U.S. nuclear launch codes won't have been compromised by Donald Trump if he took them to Mar-a-Lago, according to a former "nuclear football" carrier.

He tweeted: "For those who buy the lie that President Trump "stole" nuclear codes. It's not that intriguing." Claims Donald Trump could have compromised America's nuclear launch codes have been rejected by one of the men who used to carry the famed ' nuclear football'.

In remarks to conservative media outlet Real America’s Voice, one of Trump’s lawyers said the former president was able to watch the search remotely from New Jersey via Mar-a-Lago’s system of security cameras. Trump was not present at the search, which resulted in the seizure of paper records just a few months after the National Archives and Records Administration had confirmed it recovered 15 boxes of presidential records at Mar-a-Lago. Same sleazy people involved,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, tying his latest exchange with law enforcement to longstanding and oft-repeated grievances.

We don’t know the entire contents of the other 12 or so boxes the FBI took from Mar-a-Lago on Monday and Trump has apparently said he’s fine with the contents of the search warrant being revealed. Astoundingly, there were even multiple people who said raiding a former president for anything short of nuclear secrets would be a travesty. A shocking number of Trump supporters, as it turns out.

Trump previously confirmed that he had agreed to return certain records to the Archives, calling it "an ordinary and routine process." They also showed that agents collected a set of documents labeled "classified/TS/SCI documents" - a reference to top secret and sensitive compartmented material. Since Monday's search, the Justice Department has faced fierce criticism and online threats, which Garland have condemned. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday announced that the department asked Reinhart to unseal the warrant. Also included in the list was information about the "President of France." Such documents usually are kept in special government facilities because disclosure could cause grave damage to national security.

How many times have they told their parents and guardians that the marijuana, cigarettes, condoms, etc, that was found in their room wasn’t theirs? And how many times were they believed? The Washington Post reported the FBI searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home because it suspected he took “classified documents related to nuclear weapons” as well as other papers.

Trump's Week Just Went From Really Bad to “Sir, I Gotta Ask, Did ... (Vanity Fair)

For his part, the president has released several statements suggesting that yeah, he was definitely keeping documents about nuclear weapons at Mar-a-Lago.

Because she essentially hadn’t asked him point-blank, “Sir, are you keeping documents about nuclear weapons at your resort?” David Laufman, the former chief of the Justice Department’s counterintelligence section, told the Post that if the government did indeed believe that Trump had information relating to nuclear weapons sitting in his home, “that would lend itself to greater ‘hair-on-fire’ motivation to recover that material as quickly as possible.” The low point, as you might have guessed, was when it was revealed that the feds weren’t looking for knickknacks and office supplies that Trump had helped himself to after leaving the White House, but rather, as they say in the national security space, nuclear fucking documents.

House Republicans stood by former president Donald Trump on Friday despite the revelation that FBI agents sought classified documents relating to nuclear ...

While Fitzpatrick said the DOJ and FBI may have potentially set a dangerous precedent, he called it “a big, big deal” for the public to lose faith in law enforcement officers who work to protect Americans from all kinds of threats. And if they fall within that category, they’re not an imminent national security threat that would rise to the level of you have to raid Donald Trump’s home and spend nine hours there.” They pushed for transparency by the DOJ and FBI on their decision-making process to search Mar-a-Lago rather than demand the documents in other ways that do not set a precedent. “The only way you beat the world’s greatest democracy is from within, turning American on American,” Fitzpatrick said. But if his actions do not meet that threshold, then the “Biden administration will have just paved the pathway for Trump to be elected” in 2024, the member said. “None whatsoever,” McCarthy said in response to a question about whether he felt responsibility for the heightened rhetoric among Trump supporters. But in response to a reporter’s question, he offered some speculation. The Washington Post reported late Thursday that classified documents were among the items FBI agents sought in the search, according to people familiar with the investigation. But what happens in what I see in today’s social media frenzy is people want to immediately blame some politician for creating such a fervor,” said Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), who survived the politically-motivated shooting that targeted House GOP members practicing for a congressional baseball game five years ago. He said Garland should have spoken at greater length when he addressed the public Thursday. Most chose not to comment on the reports until after the legal documents publicly unsealed. Republicans on the Judiciary Committee are all here.

Trump, Supporters Say the FBI Planted Nuclear Secrets and Also ... (Slate Magazine)

Reports suggest classified material, possibly including nuclear weapons information, was basically being stored in a closet in Margaritaville.

Is the cost of constantly having to do this kind of creative public-relations triage worth the benefit of having Donald Trump be the essentially permanent leader of the Republican Party, even as early polling shows that key voters are not being convinced? Fox’s Bret Baier, in reporting on this development, emphasized that “ only one box” of the material had such a marking. The third has been addressed by a National Archives and Records Administration statement, which notes that it maintains and controls presidential archives, including those associated with Obama’s library in Chicago, and asserts that Obama-era classified materials are in fact held “in the Washington, D.C. area.” While the average voter may not be concerned about whether former presidents are following federal archiving guidelines to the letter, nuclear secrets are a different matter, to the point that the phrase “nuclear secrets” is often used as shorthand for material that could compromise national security to a catastrophic degree if it fell into the wrong hands. The first claim has not yet been backed up by any sort of paper trail, and as Slate’s Fred Kaplan explains, there is already reporting available that indicates that even if the Trump White House attempted to declassify the documents taken in the raid, the process was not completed—and, further, that he could still be criminally liable for violating laws regarding sensitive information even if it had been. On Thursday night, the Washington Post reported that “classified documents relating to nuclear weapons” were among the items that agents were looking for.
