Though it's the driest state in the US, its rainstorms are expected to become more extreme, with more flash flooding, as the climate changes. The drought in Nevada can actually makes floods worse, since dry soil absorbs less water. Rising temperatures are increasing water evaporation and changing the atmospheric and ocean currents that distribute moisture across the globe. Monsoon rain poured over Las Vegas Thursday, causing flooding in some of the city's iconic casinos for the second time in two weeks. Climate change, driven by all the greenhouse gasses that humans have released into the atmosphere, is changing the planet's water cycle. Those videos have not been independently confirmed by Insider.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found some evidence that rainfall from the Southwest monsoon has increased since the 1970s. Shortly after 9 p.m., the Weather Service issued a flood advisory for all of Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, cautioning that high water could affect low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Last week, 1,000 people were stranded in California’s Death Valley National Park because of a 1-in-1,000-year downpour. This year’s Southwest monsoon has been particularly intense, helping to relieve drought conditions in the region but also causing many significant flood events. The area is under a flood watch from 11 a.m. Friday to midnight Saturday because of the potential for slow-moving thunderstorms that could produce heavy rain and flash flooding, according to the Weather Service. At least a 20 percent chance of afternoon and evening storms is in the forecast through Monday. At one point, more than 17,500 customers were without power, Las Vegas television station KLAS-TV reported.

Thunderstorms are possible every day on the 7-day forecast as monsoon season continues. Afternoon highs will remain below normal in the mid and upper 90s each day, though the humidity will make it quite uncomfortable. There is a slight chance for more storms Friday afternoon, primarily over the higher terrain and areas to the east of Las Vegas, but they are still possible in the valley.

2 dead amid 'restless' monsoon-season flooding in Las Vegas (ABC News)

The National Weather Service is calling this the most “restless” summer monsoon season in the Las Vegas area in a decade.

The Clark County coroner did not immediately report the identities or causes of death in either case. The Las Vegas area usually receives about 4.2 inches (10.7 centimeters) of rain per year. Meteorologist Brian Planz said about 1.25 inches (3.2 centimeters) of rain fell overnight in some areas west of the Las Vegas Strip and near the city of Kingman in northwest Arizona. “That makes this the wettest monsoon season in ten years,” the weather service said over a Tweet chart labeled “Restless 2022 Monsoon.” It tallied 3.63 inches (9.2 centimeters) of summer rain in the region in 2012, but only a trace in 2020. Planz said 0.58 inch (1.47 centimeters) of rain was recorded at the official measuring spot at Harry Reid International Airport, bringing the total to 1.28 inches (3.25 centimeters) during the June 15 to Sept. 30 monsoon season. LAS VEGAS -- The most “restless” summer monsoon season in a decade became deadly Thursday, as intense lightning and thunderstorms flooded parts of southern Nevada and a leaky ceiling forced table games to stop at one Las Vegas Strip casino.
