Eagles training camp 2022: 10 non-starters to watch in preseason ... (NBC Sports)

Here are 10 players to watch as the Eagles kick off their 2022 preseason against the Jets on Friday night. By Dave Zangaro.

He’s stacked a few impressive days in a row and is worth watching in this game. Versatility is a key element for any backup and now Scott can play nickel, safety and is a really good gunner on the punt team. QB Reid Sinnett: While he was still with Miami last summer, Sinnett had a very good preseason, which is what really put him on the Eagles’ radar. DB Josiah Scott: The Eagles have nine cornerbacks fighting for just a few jobs, but Scott is one of the more intriguing names. Basically, you just want to see Jurgens look like he belongs on an offensive line that is arguably the best in the NFL. Because that job will likely be his in 2023. C Cam Jurgens: I’m cheating a little bit on this one because Jurgens will be the starter at center in place of Jason Kelce in this game as Kelce comes back from an elbow cleanout. Huntley is a burner and has the ability to break off a big run anytime he touches the ball. He’s starting to make some plays off the edge in team drills and in 1-on-1s. WR Deon Cain: The 26-year-old receiver is probably still buried on the depth chart but he’s caught a ton of passes in the first 10 training camp practices. RB Jason Huntley: With injuries to Boston Scott (concussion) and Kenny Gainwell (hip), Huntley has been getting more snaps the last week of practices and he’s starting to flash again like he did last summer. If Covey makes the 53-man roster, it’ll be because of his ability as a returner. During training camp, Davis is focusing on his technique to get everything out of his natural gifts.

Quick Hits: Eagles vs Jets Edition (Sports Illustrated)

QUARTERBACK - Reid Sinnett has taken a firm grasp of the QB3 job over undrafted rookie Carson Strong and has even been rewarded with a few second-team reps.

OFFENSIVE LINE: How do the Eagles handle Cam Jurgens now that Jason Kelce is out for at least the next month with "routine" elbow surgery? TIGHT END: The Eagles need a TE2 behind Dallas Goedert and Noah Togiai seems to be making a push in camp after gaining extra reps when rookie Grant Calcaterra went down with a hamstring injury. RUNNING BACK: The Eagles aren't going through a 17-game season with three backs so there is an opportunity, and the speedy Jason Huntley has the inside track.

Eagles-Jets: How to watch or stream the first preseason game (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The Eagles open up the 2022 NFL preseason against the New York Jets on Friday night in South Philadelphia, where all eyes will be on Jalen Hurts.

NBC Sports Philadelphia plans to announce who will replace Ray Didinger and Seth Joyner on its pre- and postgame coverage prior to the start of the regular season. The Eagles’ second preseason game against the Cleveland Browns will also air on the NFL Network. The game will air at 7:30 p.m. on NBC10. Returning to the booth is play-by-play announcer Scott Graham, the former Phillies broadcaster in his 11th year calling Eagles preseason games. “I’m just putting my head down and going to work,” said Reagor, who is dealing again with the death of a close friend. Reese, who signed a new deal back in March that will keep him in the booth through the 2024 season, will once again be joined by former Eagles receiver Mike Quick. WIP host Howard Eskin will handle sideline reporting duties. Fans living outside the Philadelphia market can watch the game on NFL+, the league’s new streaming service. Center Jason Kelce also won’t play after having surgery on his elbow described as a “routine clean-out.” Though there’s no official timetable, Eagles beat writer Jeff McLane reported he’s expected to return in time for the Birds’ season opener against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 11. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters he expects his starters to play for one or two series tonight at Lincoln Financial Field, meaning fans should get to see Hurts in some action. Didinger retired in May after covering the Eagles for 53 years, and Joyner left to join the Eagles postgame show on JAKIB Media Partners alongside Derrick Gunn, Devan Kaney, and former 97.5 The Fanatic host Mike Missanelli. That show debuts Sept. 11 following the Eagles Week 1 game against the Detroit Lions. On NBC, coverage begins at 7 p.m. with Eagles Preseason Kickoff, which will feature a pregame interview with head coach Nick Sirianni and an all-access feature with new Eagles linebacker and Camden, N.J., native Haason Reddick. Eagles Preseason Final will air following the game, featuring John Clark, Ross Tucker, and Mike Quick. Of course, the game will also air on 94.1 WIP, where fans can listen to Merrill Reese begin what will be his 45th season calling Eagles games — the longest tenure in the NFL, which dates back to 1977. The Eagles open up the 2022 NFL preseason against the New York Jets on Friday night in South Philadelphia, where all eyes will be on Jalen Hurts.

Usually, during the regular season, there’s a much more extensive wagering menu to browse through. Eagles preseason reset: What to watch, what we've learned so far (The Athletic)

Ahead of Friday's preseason opener vs. the Jets, here's a position-by-position rundown of everything you need to know.

Undrafted rookie Britain Covey is the player to watch here after a standout college career as a returner. Undrafted rookie Reed Blankenship entered camp as a long shot but has been a pleasant surprise and could make a roster push with a standout preseason performance. Reddick has spent the majority of the summer as a stand-up sam linebacker and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will be charged with figuring out some creative ways to let Reddick do what he does best. There’s also a competition worth following at sam linebacker behind Reddick, where the Eagles might be forced to choose between 2021 seventh-round pick Patrick Johnson and rookie sixth-round pick Kyron Johnson. Kayode Awosika has been playing left tackle because of the injuries to Mailata, Dillard and Le’Raven Clark. A good performance would mean a lot in his roster push. The Eagles gave Reddick $30 million guaranteed as a free agent because he has been one of the most productive pass rushers in the league over the past two seasons. He looked great through the first week of camp and has taken a small dip since, but the team already feels very good about his selection. With him out and Tyree Jackson still on the physically unable to perform list, the Eagles don’t really have a receiving-first backup tight end, depending on your opinion of Richard Rodgers. Sinnett, though, could be good enough in the preseason games to make the Eagles think twice about trade offers for Gardner Minshew, who has been more down than up throughout camp as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. The second half might belong to undrafted rookie Kennedy Brooks, who is on the slower side but has some tackle-breaking ability. So while the main goal for the team’s most important players will be to make it out of the game healthy, there’s a lot on the line for everyone else. What to watch: Entering camp, Carson Strong might have been considered the front-runner for the No. 3 quarterback job given his significant signing bonus, the largest among undrafted rookies in the 2022 class.

It wasn't a good night for Jets quarterback Zach Wilson. He was intercepted on his first series by Kyzir White, setting the Eagles up at the Jets' 27. It was a decent night for the Eagles' top draft picks. Safety Reed Blankenship led the Eagles with 7 tackles. The Eagles are hoping Hargrave's injury doesn't linger into the regular season. He led a touchdown drive on his first series as the Eagles built an early 14-0 lead. He faced a 4th-and-3 from the Jets' 15 with 2:17 left. Clearly, a Hurts' injury was Sirianni's nightmare scenario in his decision on whether or not to play his starters in the preseason. Hurts was magnificent, completing all six of his passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in his only series in the Eagles' preseason opener on Friday night. After a holding penalty, Hurts capped the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert. Sinnett threw over the middle to tight end Noah Togiai for the first down. And it's safe to assume that Hurts won't play at all in the final two preseason games. Hurts then hit Sanders for 9 yards to get down to the 11.

But then the Jets easily scored a go-ahead touchdown on the very next play. Covey was back for the Eagles’ fourth kick return but the ball was kicked through the end zone for a touchback. Dean did later whiff on a Jets run to the left side. Covey was back for the Eagles’ fifth punt return, which went for a 5-yard gain. Brooks ran for a 1-yard gain and the Jets called their first timeout. I would note that, if not for the late hit penalty, the offense would’ve had to go for it on 4th-and-5 after he bailed a clean pocket for no gain. Covey was also back for the Eagles’ fourth punt return, which was a fair catch. The fourth Siposs punt went for 59 yards, a bomb. Hurts broke off a run for a touchdown but it was called back for a holding penalty on Mailata. Hurts eventually capped off the drive with a touchdown throw to an open Goedert for a 22-yard score. Covey was back for the Eagles’ third punt return. Huntley was back out for the third kick return. Jason Huntley was back for the Eagles’ first kick return.

On a positive note, Dean was given the opportunity to communicate the defensive calls. OL Penalties - The Eagles’ strength was a little sloppy early with the Mailata holding call and three false starts on Lane Johnson, Sua Opeta and Andre Dillard during the first half. RB/KR Jason Huntley - The speedy back got a ton of traffic with Kenny Gainwell (hip) and Boston Scott (concussion) unavailable. "I was just a whole player and I was playing visual on [Jets QB Zach Wilson]," White said. OC Cam Jurgens - The Eagles didn’t play it safe with the rookie center after Jason Kelce’s elbow surgery. Hurts previously took it in on the ground as well, only to be called back on a Jordan Mailata holding penalty.

Eagles stock up, stock down after preseason opener: Jalen Hurts ... (CBSSports.com)

The Eagles offensive line had to shake the rust off in the first half, as Andre Dillard, Sua Opeta, and Lane Johnson each had false start penalties. Covey tore ligaments in his right thumb on a pass from Reid Sinnett in the second half that deflected off the undrafted rookie, so he's going to miss some time. Davis overpowered Laken Tomlinson and Connor McGovern on a few run plays -- mind that those two mentioned are veteran starters in the league -- and disrupted the plays while Nakobe Dean finished the tackle. Playing on the second team appeared to be enough motivation for Dean, who looked like he belonged with the starters in his first-half action. Sinnett's stock was at an all-time low before his final drive that gave the Eagles a 21-17 lead with under two minutes to play. The Eagles could not have asked any more from Hurts in his one series, leading Philadlephia to a touchdown on the opening drive before being removed from the game.

Eagles-Jets analysis: Jalen Hurts rattles off an impressive drive in ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The Eagles began their preseason with a 24-21 loss that featured Hurts looking good in completing each of his six pass attempts.

“I was playing visual on the quarterback,” White said. After blowing up a double team against the pass in the first quarter, Davis showed how he can transition from power to speed as he closed on a scrambling Wilson. It was the type of accuracy that is encouraging to see for Hurts as he embarks on his third year in the league. “We talk about the importance of explosive plays,” Hurts said. He hit Goedert on an out-breaking route as he was closing in on a defender near the sideline, but Hurts correctly placed the pass inside to give Goedert a chance to make the play. “I wasn’t mad at Coach Saleh, I was mad at the situation,” Sirianni said. He brushed it off at the time and continued to do so after the game. In all, Hurts went 6-for-6 for 80 yards and the touchdown. It was just the emotions of the game, I was just sticking up for Jalen. I’ll never apologize for sticking up for my players. On the sixth play of the drive, Hurts evaded pressure and dashed for the sideline. A Kyzir White interception sparked a scoring drive for the second-team offense and also granted the defensive starters the rest of the night off. The completion displayed the type of off-schedule playmaking ability Hurts showed last season, but it is sometimes limited in practice settings.

Eagles observations: Jalen Hurts is sharp, defense rolls vs. Jets (NBC Sports)

The Eagles' first team units dominated on Friday night, the backups looked solid as well, and a rookie excelled in a big way in the Birds' preseason debut.

8. I like what I saw from Zach Pascal, especially on that flat route in the second quarter where he got himself wide open and reeled in a 32-yarder from Gardner Minshew. Pascal missed a week of camp with a nasty bout of food poisoning, and he just started practicing last Thursday and was limited for the first couple days. And while the Eagles were vanilla offensively, the fact that their full focus was on the passing game tells you where the future of the offense is. The Eagles now have the personnel to have success chucking it, and every play call on the first TD drive was a pass. the Lions on Sept. 11, but if he’s not, the Eagles are in good hands with Jurgens. He’s a beast. 6. Saw a lot of positives from the second defense, which played three series and held the Jets to three points – and they were scored by the Jets’ first offense (minus Wilson). A lot of these guys are going to have roles on defense – some of them will have significant roles – so that was good to see. But Friday night, Sanders had a 12-yard catch from Hurts for a first down and then an eight-yard catch on a first down. It’s just going to be a lot harder to move the ball against this group, and we saw a nice brief glimpse of that Friday night. 5. One thing that initial TD drive tells you is that the offense we saw the second half of last year, when the Eagles ran the ball 35 to 40 times a game because they didn’t believe in their passing game, is long gone. As the quarterback and team leader, he owes it to the team to not lose his cool, no matter what. 3. The first defense was only on the field for five plays, but those five plays netted 11 yards and a takeaway. First, Mailata raced over to Williams and started screaming at him, and he was smart enough not to start a brawl or do anything that might have gotten him ejected or suspended, but he made it clear that he and the o-line have Hurts’ back. He delivered the ball quickly.

Seven plays later the offense, led by quarterback Gardner Minshew who completed 8 of his 12 passes for 81 yards, scored on a Jason Huntley 1-yard run. The coaches will call a play for Dotson, and it will be interesting to see how Dotson responds in a game situation versus another team. Generally I like to go into great detail in my articles for this website, but I don’t think I need to explain to you what is at stake for Zach Wilson and the franchise. The quarterback impressed in his limited reps, opening the game with a 28-yard pass to Quez Watkins that immediately set the tone for his performance. Wentz has also been a fan of Dotson, favoring him throughout the off-season and training camp, along with rookie tight end Cole Turner. Dotson is expected to see sufficient time in week one, and the big lights are on for him. Hurts generally took what the defense gave him underneath and mixed in some off-script plays, including a sprint to the right to extend the play before finding Quez Watkins for a 28-yard gain. But this was a preseason game, and there was more for Hurts to gain in resisting his instinct to run, in challenging himself to do that which doesn’t come naturally to him yet. If this had been a regular season game, if there had been more at stake for Hurts and the Eagles, one could understand, if not completely excuse, his decision to use his feet to try to earn a fresh set of downs. On the Eagles’ opening drive, Jalen Hurts went 6 for 6 for 80 yards and TD pass to Dallas Goedert, for a perfect QB rating of 158.3. Quez Watkins made a nice toe-tap catch along the sideline on Hurts’ first throw of the night, which was on the run to his right. There was as much revealed about Hurts in that moment as there was in his going 6-for-6, with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert, against soft Jets coverage and with the Eagles’ offensive line providing him plenty of time and protection. He efficiently led the offense to the end zone for a score. The Eagles fell to the Jets, 24-21 in their first preseason game. the Lions on Sept. 11, but if he’s not, the Eagles are in good hands with Jurgens. He’s a beast.

Jets vs. Eagles - Game Recap - August 12, 2022 - ESPN (ESPN)

PHILADELPHIA -- — A knee injury to Zach Wilson in Friday night's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles has turned the Jets' high hopes for their ...

Becton, a 2020 first-round pick, missed all but the first game last season after dislocating his right kneecap and suffering cartilage damage in the opener. Philadelphia’s opening drive wasn’t a good sign for a revamped Jets defense that finished 2021 last in total defense and scoring defense, 30th in pass defense and 29th against the run. But the Jets defense put up little resistance to Hurts and the Eagles. After going back to pass with 4:29 left in the period, Wilson was flushed out of the pocket and scrambled to his right for 7 yards, but went down after the play. After making the playoffs in the first season under Sirianni last year, there is great hope in Philadelphia for more progress this season. But he was 26th in completion rate (61.3 percent) and 22nd in passer rating (87.2), and his accuracy and arm strength have been targets for skeptics. Hurts’ lone drive wasn’t without concern, though, as he was leveled with a hard hit from Williams despite being clearly out of bounds after scrambling for no gain. Eagles linebacker Kyzir White stepped in front of Wilson’s intended pass for wide receiver Corey Davis and returned it 27 yards to the Jets 20 on what appeared to be a poor read by the New York quarterback. He connected with his next four passes before finishing a perfect passing drive with a 22-yard touchdown strike to tight end Dallas Goedert. It’s the same knee that Wilson suffered a sprained PCL in Week 7 against New England last year. The Jets coach didn’t blame the injury on the turf, but mentioned it was new sod that he said was just laid down on July 29. “He’s in good spirits, a little frustrated obviously,” Saleh said.

Immediately after the hit — one which Jets head Coach Robert Saleh called “egregiously awful” — left tackle Jordan Mailata was the first Eagles player in ...

“That’s why we love Nick,” Mailata said. “That’s why we have a tremendous amount of respect for him. “We were like a big dog that ran to the fence and didn’t do a whole lot. After the game, Sirianni admitted he should have handled the situation a little better. “I can’t really repeat what I said,” Mailata said. “In the end, I think that’s us having each other’s backs. “We ran over there and didn’t do nothing,” Johnson said. “Yeah, I think that’s what we’re about,” Hurts said. Mailata said he thought about giving a good head butt as retaliation but his recent stint in the NFL’s concussion protocol ended that thought pretty quickly. The Eagles ended up losing the game 24-21 but they had to be extremely encouraged by how their starters played. I really did.” Sirianni charged onto the field and TV cameras caught him shouting expletives across to the Jets’ sideline.

Eagles offense rolls, Jalen Hurts avoids injury in preseason opener ... (The Athletic)

Hurts survived while the first-team offense thrived. Key takeaways from the Eagles' preseason opener.

The Eagles needed to upgrade their off-ball linebackers and White appears to be locking down the weakside spot. The versatility of the Eagles’ edge rushers is such that they can have snaps with Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett rushing from the edge with hands in the dirt (see White’s interception clip above), and also have snaps when Haason Reddick is rushing from a standup role. You’ll see more of what they plan on Sept. 11 in Detroit. The takeaway on Friday was the versatility of the front seven. The Chargers were willing to let White leave, although that appeared to be set in motion by the presence of a former first-round pick. He pushed the pocket even when he was double-teamed, knifed into the backfield on a few runs and followed suit on one of his favorite phrases — “ two on me, somebody’s free.” Notably, much of his work came against the Jets’ starting offensive line. He flattened a center before chasing after Wilson on the play the Jets quarterback suffered a game-ending injury. The Eagles have had a dubious recent history of signing veteran linebackers, so there’s a dose of skepticism whenever they’re relying upon a player that appeared to sign for a discounted rate. Davis entered the game with the second-team defense and was a menace working primarily as a 3-4 nose tackle. There’s a benefit in preparing the top players for the regular season, but it must be weighed against the risk of losing someone of significance in a game that doesn’t count. Hurts completed all six of his passes for 80 yards and a touchdown for a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating. Quarterback Chris Streveler hit Calvin Jackson for a game-winning touchdown pass with 16 seconds left to give the Jets a 24-21 win in the Eagles’ preseason opener. Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson immediately confronted Williams. On the other side of the field, Nick Sirianni was livid.

Eagles preseason Week 1 game balls, slightly disappointing ... (Inside the Iggles)

Newly-acquired linebacker Kyzir White officially has his first big moment in an Eagles jersey, picking off New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson during the ...

Kyzir showed a lot of promise in his first game as an Eagle, and there’s no reason to believe that won’t continue when the lights are shining brightly. White read Wilson’s eyes, stepped in front of Corey Davis, picked the ball off, and returned the ball 30 yards to set Gardner Minshew and the second-team offense up nicely. Philadelphia took the opening kickoff, drove down the field, overcame to penalties, and punched one in for six.

Philadelphia Eagles: Davis and Dean dazzled in preseason debuts (Section 215)

The Philadelphia Eagles' draft picks out of Georgia, Davis, and Dean, looked like stars in the making in their preseason debuts versus the New York Jets.

Though Davis did not register an official stat in the game, his presence was felt every snap that he was on the field. When that time came, Davis made his presence known from the moment he entered the game. He finished his night with five total tackles, and looked incredibly smooth in coverage, displaying the fluidity and athleticism that made him such a highly coveted player in his draft class.

Dean has become a more personable player since arriving in Philadelphia.

Dean is focused on the present, trying to earn a starting linebacker job come Week 1. The Eagles couldn't pass on Dean in the third round -- and found no pectoral muscle issues either. Dean played 24 snaps in his first game with the Eagles, all in the first half.

Eagles vs. Jets: 14 winners, 6 losers, 6 IDKs (Bleeding Green Nation)

The most important thing in the preseason is avoiding injuries. It seems like no Eagles players got majorly injured on Friday night. That's a win. JALEN HURTS.

Sinnett was easily on track to be in the loser section before reideeming himself a bit on the penultimate drive. Good sign for him that the Eagles were giving him opportunities to return both kicks and punts. He was good in run defense, though he did fail to make a play on one rushing attempt to the outside. The 43-yard kick return was nice; he continues to be the best KR option on the team. That being said, it’s hard to ignore how his time away is giving him fewer opportunities to convince the Eagles to keep him on the roster. Gowan was arguably the Eagles’ most impressive corner from the big group that’s competing to earn a roster spot. He pressured Mike White into a third down incompletion to make the Jets settle for a field goal. Early signs point to the Eagles’ streak of signing free agent linebackers who fail to make a positive impact for the team coming to an end. White made it a quick night for the starting defense by jumping a short route to pick off Zach Wilson on the Eagles’ second defensive snap. The Eagles lost to the Jets on Friday night. But I think he was just trying to move the drive.” There was a good balance of playing on-schedule (multiple quick completions) and making things happen on his own (good throw on the run to Quez Watkins along the right sideline).

Eagles: 3 players battling for roster spots who impressed in ... (ClutchPoints)

A look at three players who stepped up and impressed in the Philadelphia Eagles preseason opener against the Jets.

The Eagles enjoyed a decent 2021 campaign. If they can have players continuously step up this season then the Eagles may be able to contend for the NFC East division crown. But his talent is interesting and the Eagles might have a future star in Jason Huntley. So it wasn’t as if he picked off a third string QB. The pass from Wilson wasn’t thrown well, but Kyzir White read it out of Wilson’s hand which led to the easy interception. Sure, blocking is still an important aspect of the game for tight ends. In the preseason, it’s all about what you can do in limited action.
