Megan Thee Stallion's 'Traumazine' Is A Multi-Faceted Mood (Rolling Stone)

On her second album, the rap superstar comes up with just the right balance of slick bops and searing confessionals.

There’s a lucid humanistic feel to the song—enhanced by loopy pianos and a wailing vocal sample—that makes it somehow feel both insular and grand, like the tragic rich people’s plights in a Sophia Coppola flick. When, at the end of the song, she scoffs, “Matter fact, wait, stop, bitch, I really rap/I be quick to check you pussy bitches like a pap,” Meg could be one of the characters in the series Rap Sh!t playfully freestyling to herself in the mirror instead of eating her feelings. And there’s a caustic pressure-cooker intensity to her tone, as she confesses, over the dramatic strings and steely percussion, “Going through some things, so I gotta stay busy/Bought a Rari, I can’t let the shit I’m thinking catch up with me.” Megan has rarely been upfront about her struggles in her songs (except for the emo chorus to her 2019 cut “Crying in the Car”). So it’s refreshing to hear her rap about feeling vulnerable and having to grind it out through her day-to-day trials. (In her interviews she’s said that her iconic “Hot Girl” alias touches on only one aspect of her persona.) The rangy wordsmith—with a passion for the Gorillaz, anime, and around-the-way seafood—insists that her earlier projects, for all their kooky amiability, don’t tell her full story. On opener “NDA,” Megan comes clean about the drawbacks that came with her quick rise to fame. She’s so gifted with it that she can effortlessly slip an analogy about baptism (and cunnilingus!) into a song (”Plan B”) about birth control.

Megan Thee Stallion Releases New Album Traumazine: Listen (Pitchfork)

The Houston rapper's second studio album features Dua Lipa, Future, Jhené Aiko, Latto, Rico Nasty, and more.

Megan Thee Stallion was recently honored with her very own day in her hometown of Houston, where she was awarded the key to the city. “At first you was twerking, now you might be crying.” She added: “I just always want people to remember, ‘Yes, Megan Thee Stallion, she was great, she was a rapper. Traumazine follows last year’s Something for Thee Hotties, which included the single “ Thot Shit.” Megan released her debut album, Good News, back in 2020, and it boasted appearances from City Girls, SZA, Lil Durk, and more.

What's Up With Megan Thee Stallion's Messy Label Legal Battle? (Vulture)

Megan Thee Stallion hints that the 1501 Certified CEO could be behind 'Traumazine' leaks amid its suit against the rapper over whether 'Something for Thee ...

In August 2021, Megan filed another suit against 1501 to permit her foray into the K-pop-stan market with a remix of “Butter,” by BTS. Her label allegedly blocked her from releasing the song, but she claimed in court documents that barring the song’s release would cause “irreparable damage” to her career. In her tweets, when Meg referred to “the last girl on 1501” who also felt wronged by the label, many speculated it was Erica Banks, the “Buss It” rapper and rising rap star. The tweet was in reference to the rollout of Tramauzine, which was been plagued by leaks after the new record was teased on social media. She did, however, take the time to hint at 1501’s role in leaking her songs and album art ahead of Traumazine’s official rollout. The ensuing legal clash rages on as Megan and 1501’s Crawford decide what constitutes an album in court. In March 2020, Megan sued 1501 for allegedly stopping her from releasing new music, requesting that the judge throw out her current contract with the label. If the court rules in favor of 1501, Megan would be contractually obligated to release two more albums under the label. The new legal storm arrives after Megan’s previous lawsuits against 1501, in which she claimed the label barred her from releasing new music after she tried to renegotiate her contract. She decided to renegotiate with 1501, which led the label to bar her from releasing new music. According to 1501 Certified Entertainment, Something for Thee Hotties is not album enough, relegating it to mixtape status. By that definition, Something for Thee Hotties is a bona fide album because it exceeds the 45-minute running time by exactly two seconds. The countersuit follows Meg’s original February 2022 lawsuit, in which she claimed Something does count as an album and contributes to satisfying her obligations to the label.

She has a seemingly limitless supply of fantastic insults – “bitch, you do you – whatever that is”; “you ain’t worth the crack your momma used to smoke” – and an equally limitless number of ways to announce her own brilliance: “Like a nigga with a big dick, a lot of these ho’s can’t take me.” Red Wine has her “looking at your pretty face while I’m straddling it”: her delivery makes it sound as if she’s describing murdering someone, rather than showing them a good time. Released amid a hail of controversy – some of it stemming from an incident in which its author was shot, allegedly by rapper Tory Lanez – Megan Thee Stallion’s 2020 debut album Good News was an exercise in optimism from its title down.

Brand new albums from Megan Thee Stallion, The Game, Danger Mouse and Black Thought, Rod Wave, Destroy Lonely and more.

From there he was tapped by fellow DMV artist Brent Faiyaz to work on “FYTB,” one of the best cuts from his album-of-the-year contender WASTELAND. Now the “LIFESTYLE” MC is back with the deluxe edition to his latest offering, adding ten new songs to the original eleven. In late May Joony dropped Pretty In Black, one of the year’s most underrated albums. Though the album is lengthy with 24 songs, Wave carves out most of the space for himself, bringing on only Jack Harlow, December Joy and comedian Druski for a skit. In addition to featuring some of the “Savage” artist’s most fiery bars in recent memory, Traumazine also includes a baffling list of guests. The influence of Playboi Carti over Hip Hop in 2022 cannot be overstated. Some of the artists who draw inspiration from King Vamp are biters; others, like Destroy Lonely, are helping push the sound forward. She’s released a handful of singles and guest verses since last year’s Something for Thee Hotties, including the scorching “Flamin’ Hottie,” “Lick” with Shenseea and the scorching lead single “Plan B,” but has remained relatively quiet otherwise. Hip Hop is a fast-moving genre with reverence for the past, but with the constant flux of trends, it’s tough for young listeners to keep up with everything. With only 11 songs (a rarity nowadays), EA Monster is sleek and trim. Also including new albums from the DMV’s Joony, Destroy Lonely and AUGUST 08, this list is not to be missed. With such undeniable talent it seems obvious that, one way or another, Florida singer Rod Wave would have found his way into the spotlight. Kicking off HipHopDX‘s round-up is The Game with DRILLMATIC Heart vs.

Megan Thee Stallion surprised fans with the release of her second album, "Traumazine," which explicitly bares the body and soul of the rapper.

After name-dropping “Britney, Whitney” and Marilyn Monroe, Megan Thee Stallion turns vulnerable for a moment: “All I really want to hear is it’ll be OK.” “Not Nice”: Megan Thee Stallion continues to assert her position of fortitude. “Anxiety”: One of the most memorable songs on the album not only is equipped with a jaunty keyboard backdrop and poppy bounce, but also a ready-made T-shirt slogan: “I hate everybody and that’s just me being real. In other words, Megan Thee Stallion completely unbridled, just like her “Hotties” love her. “Who Me” with Pooh Shiesty: The most obvious song about Lanez decimates everyone in Megan Thee Stallion’s path in under two minutes. “I feel like Biggie – who shot you?

Every Song Ranked on Megan Thee Stallion's 'Traumazine' Album ... (Billboard)

Megan Thee Stallion opens up more than ever for her vulnerable 'Traumazine' album. 'Billboard' ranks every track from the star-studded LP.

“Flip Flop” is a fitting title as Meg gets back to her braggadocios self in the second verse. The most openly vulnerable we hear Megan on Traumazine. “Anxiety” serves as a mental health advocacy anthem while Tina Snow opens up about her bad days and how she doesn’t know where or who to turn to for help. “Star” is a potential bop with support courtesy of former American Idol contestant Lucky Daye. She’s had enough of the “jealous hoes” ridiculing every part of her life and fires back about how they should focus on themselves. “Her” ends up living as a middling song on the album. She calls him a “b—h” and then quickly drops the subject with the case heading to trial later this year and turns her focus back to flossing her icy jewelry. “Scary” describes itself with ominous production and gives the album a new texture and a different listening experience for fans. Overall, “Not Nice” is a forgettable deep cut on the project. “Ayy, I feel like Biggie, who shot you? “Ms. Nasty” gets lost in the album’s shuffle and should’ve been left on the cutting room floor. Meg has stated that whenever this record comes on, women will start “jumping” around and “clapping.” The April single went on to peak at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. OG Parker ups the vibes and tempo of the album after Megan Thee Stallion spent the first three tracks in a rage taking her anger out on her detractors.

I Celebrated the Release of Megan Thee Stallion's New Album With ... (The Root)

On Friday, the 'Savage' rapper performed songs from her new album, Traumatize, on GMA's Summer Concert Series stage.

She even asked a few people their names, as she knew that she had interacted with a few of them over social media. She performed “Body,” the “Savage” remix featuring Beyoncé (which every single person screamed the intro), and “Pressurelicious” featuring Future (which is from her new album). The GMA show was set up to look like a full concert, but in reality, only about one minute of four-to-five songs were actually performed on stage, with interviews and audience participation in-between. As I walked up the stairs of the press platform, which was a couple of yards behind the audience, the “WAP” rapper’s five female backup dancers took to the stage. The audio played on and off that way for another thirty minutes, with only a few of her most popular songs on loop. As I sat on a bench with other press outside the venue, I could hear the crowd screaming as sound check began.

5 Takeaways From Megan Thee Stallion's New Album <i ... (TIME)

On her sixth project, the rapper is equal parts fierce and vulnerable, reflecting on the struggles she's endured in recent years.

After she released her previous project, “Something For Thee Hotties,” 1501 claimed the project was not an album, and Megan filed a countersuit arguing that it was. In short, Megan needed to fulfill her contractual obligations with a certain number of albums released under the label. For the past two years, Megan has faced a legal battle with 1501 Certified Entertainment—the record label she initially signed with in 2018. With Traumazine, we see her dig deeper into her insecurities on tracks like “Anxiety,” where she raps, “I’m a bad bitch, and I got bad anxiety,” and “Flip Flop,” where she talks about how fame can be isolating in not knowing who you can trust. The album also features collaborations with Latto, Memphis rappers Key Glock and Pooh Shiesty, and Future. She pays homage to her hometown, inviting three famous Houston rappers—Sauce Walka, Lil’ Keke, and Big Pokey—to trade bars on “Southside Royalty Freestyle.” Being a good artist requires growth and relatability, two hallmarks of many of the songs in Megan’s discography.

Megan Thee Stallion 'Traumazine' Album Review: Rap's Reigning ... (Daily Beast)

Packed with simmering confessionals and freaky bangers alike, the rapper's latest album proves she's not afraid to evolve as an artist—or to talk some sh*t.

Even when the production isn’t perfect, you’re reminded that no mainstream rapper is delivering such intimidating bars and witty one-liners as consistently as Megan. It’s almost frightening to think about the type of records she’ll be making in a few years’ time. Speaking of that Keebler elf, some listeners might be surprised at how little Megan addresses Lanez throughout the album, given how much the incident has cast a shadow over her career. Much of the album has the ease and confidence of her beloved 2018 mixtape Tina Snow. By now, Megan has given fans and critics enough music to understand her strengths and weaknesses as an emcee. As of this past week, however, the 27-year-old seemed optimistic if not assured about what the future holds, tweeting this message to her fans on Wednesday. If not, Megan owes another album to the Houston-based label, which collects an absurd amount of royalties from practically all her business ventures.

Or worse, she’s going to “be quick to check you pussy bitches like a Pap / Kill a bitch, all I need is a pistol and a pad,” she threatens.
