Smiling Dogs? Captcha Has Gone Too Far (WIRED)

When Jared Bauman was asked to look at nine dog pictures and identify which ones were smiling as part of a captcha test to log in to a website a few weeks ...

(This is why we’re asked to identify traffic signals and sidewalks.) Google got into the captcha game in 2009, buying reCAPTCHA—developed by Duolingo founder Luis Van Ahn—for tens of millions of dollars. “We’ve literally all been there through gritted teeth muttering: ‘Those were all the pictures with traffic lights,’” says Effie Le Moignan, research associate in social computing at Newcastle University, who calls the captcha era of the internet a “human-computer interaction atrocity.” This kind of conundrum is becoming a bigger issue as captchas—tests designed to weed out robot web surfers from humans on websites—have grown increasingly cryptic.

Before you compost the peach peels and pits, put them in a saucepan with a little water, sugar or honey, plus vanilla or almond extract and a little nutmeg. “Ginger and Baker in Ft. Collins has an outdoor dog patio with a menu for pooches. Place frozen slices in a bag for use later. If a peach is firm enough to use a potato peeler on, it’s not ripe nor sweet enough to eat. Use peach syrup for pancakes and to top ice cream. “In England, France and Germany, all allow dogs in pubs and cafes without a problem. “No, unless it’s a genuine service dog that lies next to the owner’s feet. Drop whole peaches into a pot of simmering water and fish them out about 10 to 20 seconds later. Most people don’t bother to train their dogs much and assume the dog is ‘nice’ because it is nice at home or in familiar situations. In defense of dogs, some of the canines behave a lot better than the children who run wild inappropriately at Boulder County eateries. “Dogs and cats should not be allowed in restaurants or cafes or bakeries. “As a very allergic person, I vote NO to having non-service dogs inside restaurants.

13 Best Hot Dogs In America (Tasting Table)

Customers can mosey right up to the deli case and take their pick of sausage: pork, beef, and chicken are all up for grabs, to be grilled and tucked inside buns ...

Hot dogs are part of the culinary culture in a meat-loving city like Chicago. Chicago-style hot dogs are some of the most storied dogs around. A fixture in the local hot dog scene, Biker Jim slings exotic sausages from food carts, a concession stand at Rockies Stadium, and his own brick-and-mortar restaurant, Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs, the home base for any number of gourmet hot dogs with one-of-a-kind toppings. However, with some of the most creative hot dogs in the country, this is exactly what New Orleans' Dat Dog does. With locations in Warwick and Allston, the vibrant restaurant offers inventive takes on traditional American comfort foods like hot dogs, burgers, and fried chicken. For the ultimate New Orleans experience, get the Snappy Dog, an alligator sausage that blends a bit of the bayou with flavors from the Southwest. Each snappy hot dog comes layered with cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, chipotle mayonnaise, and barbecue sauce in a traditional, slightly sweet hot dog bun. A quarter-pound all-beef hot dog is the go-to, but customers can also swap in a spicy Louisiana hot link or a veggie dog. What makes hot dogs here so unique and omnipresent has a lot to do with the simplicity of it all. The ritual lives on at hot dog temples like Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island. However, Detroit is a city that values tradition and innovation — the latter of which you can taste at Vinsetta Garage. The bread, a thick Mexican bolillo bun akin to New England-style lobster rolls, is buttered and griddled with a unique technique that adds richness to a crispy bacon-wrapped hot dog. Among the many regional hot dog variations, one style that stands out is the Sonoran hot dog. The casual, colorful eatery is the vision of Nick Pihakis, who partnered with Pete Graphos, the founder of historic Sneaky Pete's Hot Dogs in Birmingham, Alabama. Together, they created an Atlanta original that combines old-school and contemporary. Along with burgers, ice cream, and barbecue, hot dogs are iconic American comfort food that shines in the summer months.

Being a family dog can be a lonely stressful job - Futurity (Futurity: Research News)

Dogs that live with a family have a lot more advantages than dogs that roam free. But when it comes to their stress level, it's a different story.

It is a life that doesn’t harmonize with the social needs of dogs, which need to spend time in the company of humans and other dogs. This is particularly true in social contexts, where we need to try to avoid forcing a dog into something that it doesn’t want to do. “Dogs that are often left alone at home or that haven’t gotten progressively used to being alone can be affected by separation anxiety or other separation-related issues like boredom and frustration. Dogs have gradually evolved from living freely on farms, where there were always people around and other dogs nearby, to moving into small urban homes, as pets which were acquired to satisfy their owners, with confinement and loneliness built into the equation. The life of a typical Danish “family dog” comes with a price. One could easily believe that “village dogs” would be better off in a safe and stable environment alongside a family in suburban Denmark. But things aren’t quite that simple.
