He responded less explicitly last month in Snyder, telling the person, “Might be funny to you. Last month, Abbott’s campaign cautioned protesters against giving O’Rourke the opportunity for such photo ops. It was not the first time O’Rourke has addressed heckling at an event while discussing gun violence. He has made multiple social media posts throughout the tour showing off interactions with people who have attended the events wearing Republican gear. See the program. He quickly moved on in his stump speech, talking about wanting to keep kids safe as the school year begins.

In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators learned of Ramos’ past alarming and unchecked behavior, including several residents recalling seeing him carrying a bag of bloodied dead cats. The investigative report noted that despite the school’s five-foot tall exterior fence and adopted security policies to lock exterior doors and internal classroom doors, there was a "culture of compliance" among staff who propped open doors. "The owner of the gun store described the attacker as an ‘average customer with no ‘red flags’ or suspicious conditions — just that he was always alone and quiet," according to the report. Ramos was reportedly teased by peers that he would one day become a school shooter. Law enforcement response to the Uvalde shooting has been the subject of severe scrutiny. "It would take common sense steps to find the common ground — Democrats and Republicans, gun owners, non-gun owners alike."

Abbott’s campaign has insisted that their upcoming showdown would be “the one and only gubernatorial debate of the 2022 election.” O’Rourke’s camp responded that “one debate in one community for the entire state of Texas is not nearly enough,” saying they want Abbott to “participate in three town hall-style debates in every region of the state during weeknights this fall where they can take questions directly from their fellow Texans.” This was totally predictable when you choose not to do anything.” In response, Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin mid-event called O'Rourke “a sick son of a bitch” for turning the scene into a “political issue," and Sen. Ted Cruz instructed the outspoken Democrat to “sit down and don’t play this stunt." O’Rourke finished his thought before turning to the heckler to say, “It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.” His response—which he affirmed in a subsequent tweet—prompted a roar of applause, cementing a viral moment in his campaign.

He plans to continue to holding 70 public events in more than 65 counties in the lead up to November's election. He later tweeted: “Nothing more serious to me than getting justice for the families in Uvalde and stopping this from ever happening again.” During his stop at the Crazy Water Hotel in Mineral Wells, O’Rourke mentioned the shooting that killed 19 kids and two teachers in May -- when an apparent heckler who was holding a Gov. Greg Abbott campaign sign began to laugh before O’Rourke could finish his point criticizing the availability of assault-style weapons.

"It's harmful to our politics because it becomes more difficult to conduct politics and find that middle ground on issues." Jillson said jaw-dropping language in public can be counterproductive because it leaves the audience and members of the media flabbergasted. "[O'Rourke] may have skated right up to it and past it." O'Rourke's opponents will likely seize the moment to attack his credibility. "You hear people being called fascists, communists, groomers and pedophiles in ways you didn't hear decades ago, and now you hear people more emboldened to capture the audiences the attention," he said. O'Rourke quickly spun around and pointed at the heckler and said, "It may be funny to you, motherf*****, but it's not funny to me, OK."

'Texas, we can do Beto': O'Rourke campaign swing focuses on rural ... (Austin American-Statesman)

Beto O'Rourke is looking to make inroads with voters in rural pockets of the state, hoping angst over guns, abortion will propel him to victory.

In a risky maneuver that earned him both praise and denunciations, O’Rourke charged the stage, pointing to Abbott and yelling: “This is on you.” “I’m getting old and grumpy, so I like to hear him say negative things about the governor,” said Baker, 73. Smith joined his wife Anna and two of his children at O’Rourke’s town hall in Marlin, hoping to hear something from the gubernatorial hopeful that would sway his vote one way or the other. “The thing with Abbott is that he’s gone way right now,” Vasquez said. “I don’t like Abbott,” Smith said, explaining that his son is gay and he has been angered by positions the governor has taken on LGBTQ rights, specifically his call for state officials to investigate parents who provide gender-affirming medical care to their transgender adolescents. “I agree with a lot of the red flag laws, but saying that I, as a law abiding citizen, shouldn’t be able to have any guns or weapons? In Rockdale, one of the protesters made her way inside and asked O’Rourke a question during his event: “Are you coming for our guns? “The only hope I have of delivering for Rockdale once we win this election is to make sure I’ve heard from the people of Rockdale, understand your expectations and know what the challenges and opportunities are,” O’Rourke said to the crowd at the Kay Theater. “That means it is OK if you’re here and you do not support me and you’re not going to vote for me. “There’s only one chief executive of the state, and he owns everything that has gone wrong in Texas, and we’re going to make sure every voter knows that by Election Day.” Abbott and his campaign team maintain that O’Rourke’s vision does not reflect the values of the majority of Texans, particularly when it comes to guns. He’s on a 49-day drive, covering multiple cities a day, on a campaign swing that recently brought him to a collection of towns around Central Texas, including Bastrop, Brenham, Rockdale, Madisonville, Marlin and Waco. But it always touches on abortion access, the state’s power grid and improving wages for teachers, among other issues.

The 'Motherfucker' Who Enraged Beto O'Rourke Laughed at His AR ... (Reason)

The Texas gubernatorial candidate's interpretation reflects his assumption that opponents of "assault weapon" bans don't care about murdered schoolchildren.

Contrary to what O'Rourke seems to think, the definition of "assault weapon" is not based on destructive capability. O'Rourke's interpretation, that the guy laughed because he thought there was something amusing about the murder of schoolchildren, is totally implausible in context. Press coverage of that incident asserted that the heckler, one of several Abbott supporters at the event, was laughing about the Uvalde massacre, which is how O'Rourke interpreted it. But O'Rourke either does not understand this point or is determined to obscure it, as illustrated by his profane, self-righteous rebuke of an Abbott supporter who laughed at his claims about AR-15s during a campaign event in Mineral Wells this week. "In World War I," notes hunting columnist Steve Sorensen in the Jamestown Gazette, "our soldiers carried the .30 Gov't rifle (now called the .30-06 Springfield) which sent a 150 grain bullet toward the enemy at roughly 2,900 feet per second, and produced about 2,800 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. O'Rourke, who is now running against Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, still thinks that demonizing "assault weapons"—and, by implication, the millions of Americans who own guns that fall into that arbitrary, politically defined category—is a smart electoral strategy.
