Democrats select progressive Becca Balint for Vermont House seat while Trump-backed candidate nominated for Wisconsin governor.

Balint, who immediately becomes the favorite in November’s general election, would also be the first openly gay member of Congress from Vermont. Van Orden narrowly lost to Kind in the 2020 general election. Pfaff, a one-time state agriculture secretary, had previously worked for Kind and received his endorsement. “Vermont has chosen a bold, progressive vision for the future, and I will be proud to represent us in Congress,” Balint said in a statement. “She’s had a lot of adversity already and pushback. Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, a member of the progressive Squad, eked out a closer-than-expected Democratic primary victory Tuesday.

Van Orden narrowly lost to Kind in the 2020 general election. Pfaff, a onetime state agriculture secretary, had previously worked for Kind and received his endorsement. Republican Brad Finstad, who served in the U.S. Department of Agriculture during the Trump administration, won a special election to serve the remaining months of Hagedorn’s term. Both had won a May 24 special primary election to advance to Tuesday’s contest. He and others also successfully sued the city to force it to meet minimum police staffing levels called for in Minneapolis’ charter. “She’s had a lot of adversity already and pushback. “Although I respect Ilhan Omar and what she’s done, I disagree with the defund the police. “Vermont has chosen a bold, progressive vision for the future, and I will be proud to represent us in Congress,” Balint said in a statement. Vermont is the last state in the country yet to add a female member to its congressional delegation. I really think that wording sends the wrong message,” Atkinson said. In Minnesota, a Republican was headed to Congress to serve the remaining months of the late Rep. Jim Hagedorn’s term.

“He was very lucky in that he ran against a governor who was highly unpopular,” said Al Cross, director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at the University of Kentucky and a longtime political commentator. “We appreciate the fact that he really has been quick to condemn acts of antisemitism, recognizing that antisemitism has no place in the Commonwealth, and that he stands with Jewish community,” said Melanie Maron Pell, chief field operations officer at the American Jewish Committee and a longtime Louisville resident. Beshear has also tried to maintain some distance from national Democrats. “He ran on typical moderate to mainstream Democratic values,” said Cross. “The national Democrats have dug themselves a hole in the state by becoming too much about identity politics and social issues,” which, Cross added, Beshear has “done a fairly good job” of avoiding. For the past 18 months, the primary task has been to define for himself and the public what exactly a second gentleman should be.” [ The19th] No place for hate: Beshear has also dealt with a number of high-profile antisemitic incidents in Kentucky. “Each time, [Beshear] had to be the figure speaking out,” said Litvin. In 2020, a report revealed that a training presentation used by the Kentucky State Police quoted Adolf Hitler at length in a section urging officers to use violence. “He was also lucky that he was the son of a former governor [Steve Beshear] who was elected to two consecutive terms and left popular.” His name has appeared on some long-shot lists of possible 2024 Democratic presidential candidates, but political observers caution that such a move is unlikely — and Beshear said last year that he would not consider running for the nation’s highest office in the next election. Tech talk: “I have a question for you, because I agree with you that, like, Apple and I guess the other one would be the Google Play store or whatever, they shouldn’t be allowed to discriminate against a company,” said Masters, who has established himself as a vocal critic of Big Tech as a Senate candidate. Ilhan Omar faces centrist rival; open House seat in Vermont (Alpena News)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of the biggest stars of the left, is facing a centrist primary challenger on Tuesday, ...

Van Orden narrowly lost to Kind in the 2020 general election. Samuels says Omar, one of the leading voices in the national progressive movement, is divisive. Lt. Gov. Molly Gray, a centrist who is a former staffer for Welch and has been backed by Leahy and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, is squaring off against Becca Balint, the president pro tempore of the state Senate, who is trying to become the first openly gay member of Congress from Vermont. Balint has endorsements from progressive leaders, including Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The district covers a swath of counties along Wisconsin’s western border with Minnesota and includes La Crosse and Eau Claire. Republican Derrick Van Orden is running unopposed in his primary Tuesday and has Trump’s endorsement. The retirement of Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, the Senate’s longest-serving member, has opened the door for Vermont to elect its first-ever female member of the state’s congressional delegation. Finstad and Ettinger are also running in their parties’ primaries for a full term in the district, which includes Rochester and Mankato. Ettinger faces mostly token opposition, but Finstad is expecting a strong challenge from state Rep. Jeremy Munson, whom he just narrowly defeated in the special election primary. In the special election, voters will choose between Republican Brad Finstad, who served in the U.S. Department of Agriculture during the Trump administration, and Democrat Jeff Ettinger, a former chief executive at Hormel Foods. Both won a May 24 special primary election for Hagedorn’s seat, and Tuesday’s winner will serve until January. Voters in the 1st Congressional District in southern Minnesota will be weighing in on two races related to the seat. Two other members of the progressive Squad in Congress — Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri — won their Democratic primaries last week. Another key race is unfolding in western Wisconsin, where Democratic Rep. Ron Kind ‘s retirement after 26 years in office opens up a seat in a district that has been trending Republican. Among the candidates running in the Republican primary to replace Kind is a former Navy SEAL who attended the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, which preceded the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. WASHINGTON (AP) — Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of the biggest stars of the left, is facing a centrist primary challenger on Tuesday, while polls have closed in Vermont, where Democrats will choose a nominee for an open House seat who will likely make history as the first woman representing the state in Congress. A supporter of the “defund the police” movement, Omar is facing a Democratic primary challenge in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District from a former Minneapolis City Council member who has made rising crime an issue in the race.

Mr Samuels received a last-minute boost when Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey endorsed him, as well as the editorial board of The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

But Ms Omar’s victory is also the slimmest margin so far for a Squad member. She’s also been the subject of intense scrutiny, as former president Donald Trump regularly targeted her for criticism. Mr Samuels specifically emphasised in his campaign how he opposed a ballot initiative last year that would have replaced the Minneapolis Police Department with a department of public safety.

Policing Divide Hurt Rep. Ilhan Omar, Who Edged Out a Narrow ... (The New York Times)

A progressive push for police accountability after the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minnesota sparked a backlash that boosted Ms. Omar's primary opponent.

They and other groups have opposed Ms. Omar in the past after she made comments about the influence of pro-Israel donors on lawmakers. Sabrina Mauritz, a field director with TakeAction Minnesota, said Ms. Omar won despite the broader backlash because she has been an effective local leader. “I feel like it shouldn’t have been that close,” said D.A. Bullock, a filmmaker and Minneapolis community activist who supported her campaign. That push, which took the shape of a ballot measure last year, followed the 2020 killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis, which set off protests and nationwide calls for racial justice and police reform. More than two years later, the issue of policing and accountability continues to deeply divide Democrats. But on Tuesday, Ms. Omar edged out only a narrow primary victory against a centrist Democrat, coming within 2,500 votes of losing her seat.

Perhaps accordingly, pro-Israel groups such as AIPAC chose to stay out of her race.

Precinct mapping shows where Rep. Ilhan Omar did well in the 2020 DFL primary vs. a closer race against Don Samuels.

The contours of this year's primary are different from the scene that emerged in 2020, when Omar's fate was closely watched nationally as money poured into the primary contest. "It shows that people are dissatisfied with her performance," Samuels said of the results. Samuels tried to portray himself as less politically volatile than Omar while evoking their differing views on last November's policing ballot measure. "That's why we go on hard." "You know what? "Tonight's victory is a testament to how much our district believes in the collective values we are fighting for and how much they're willing to do to help us overcome defeat," Omar said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar held her seat in Congress on Tuesday night after defeating Democratic primary challenger Don Samuels by 2500 votes.

Samuels opposed the ballot question and has sued the city to compel the hiring of more police officers. In each of the wards, the ballot question got less than 36% support. The race wasn't close because Samuels got impressive vote totals, a FOX 9 analysis indicates.
